MUSCLE UP - TRASH OR PASS? | Shredded Sports Science response

- The muscle up... coming up with more iconic and popular bodyweight movement would be a huge challenge, as its exactly this excercise that got so many people start their training journey - including myself.
It has a special place in my heart, however - when i saw the #muscleupchallenge initiated by James from Shredded Sports Science I had to look at it more objectively. The main purpose of my analysis was to link all the benefits and risks it provides - and acces if this excercise is a good choice - for an average gym goer. The seemingly easy job suprisingly became a challenge, as the muscle up has many different forms and versions - where each one of them has different advantages and drawbacks, and potential risk.
After two weeks of researching, recording and editing - these 16 minutes are the essence of my work. These kinds of videos are very taxing - they do take lots of effort on many surfaces. The fact that english is not my mother language make the procces even longer. Thats why Im gonna be very thankful if you decide to give me your feedback and let me know if i should continue with them - they are giving me lots of fun and fulfilment. But YOU are the main
target - and I want my content to be useful and entertaining.
The athletes featured in the video are listed at the end. Here are the sources and materials being used in the video. I want to give all my credit to owners of them - as without their work featuring - this project would not be half as exciting and entertaining to watch...

Excellent job, you put a considerable amount of thought and effort into it which is appreciated. Good luck with the channel
Thank you James! Your words mean a lot to me.
Athlean x simp
Do you even lift?
Currently the most underrated channel on TH-cam, I wouldn’t be surprised if you grew to a half a million subs in the near future, your hard work will pay off!
Wow, thank you!
@Jose Manuel Morala Vivas Seriously?? Thats so freaking nice man. Thank you. Currently working on next programming video and im sure you guys will not be disapointed by next year ;) I got BIG plans
Well, his sub count is looking sad man
:/
Fun fact: Muscle up is translated in Finnish as "palomiespunnerrus" which means "firefighter's push up"
No way! Seriously? That makes sense!! haha thank you for sharing 🙏🏻
It's not translated in english
@@FrinksmovementTV In German it's called Feuerwehrmannklimmzug = Firefighter' Pull-up

Definitely nailed it with the conclusion - if you want to put in the time and effort to learn and prepare for it correctly then definitely worthwhile. For me it was all about a goal to reach. Progression in calisthenics can be tedious so having a skill to learn helps with motivation. I love the process and path of learning maybe even more than the outcome, so skills like the muscle up are perfect for this.
This must have taken a considerable amount of time and effort, watched the whole thing and it was all very well done and informative.
Can't wait for more videos, keep it up man!.
Im glad you can see that. It took lots of effort but whats more important is that it had its function, as i could provide you with something ;)
Already told you: your channel is a bright example of "reasoning about", compared to "I am a superhero and don't give explanations". This is even more valuable because of your age, while your colleagues often show enthusiasm without foundations.
Just a question: where you from?
Im from Poland ;) This is very very kind thank you so much.
@@FrinksmovementTV hold on and never give up. there's a bad need of meaningful contents, on Fitness.
Such a sick video.Thank you for your hard work
Wow thank you! More of this style is coming ;)
Excelent vídeo. I got shoulder injury because of my bad form Muscle up.
Thank you! Must suck, it find its victims every single day ;(
somehow the algorithm led me to your channel and i'm amazed you don't have more subs. definitely the best video i've seen on the subject of muscle ups. i developed my strict ring muscle up to where i can do working sets of 5-6 reps on it and it's very intense on the elbows. seems useful as a way to condition the elbows for eventually training the iron cross.
Appreciate that! Honestly its my oldest video (or second) and i dont like the quality that much. So its even more awesome to hear someone like it ;)
man you are 1 of 3 or 4 youtubers i follow with this kinda content, nice and refined information about calisthenics or fitness in general backed up in science, damn sir thanks and keep it fckng up man i fckng need more videos!
really great break down of the muscle up. thanks
My pleasure!
THis man is a legend, I have never seen someone who have this knowledge AND can provide all of this informations
Wow thank you!
bro kip it up i like the content on this than any other fitness channel.
this is the first time of me subscribing to a channel after watching the first video, in this case i watched the front lever video at first and subscribe immediately.
Nice video, I think James will be happy to see this sort of videos. I personally love the Ring muscle up. Love the way it feels, brought me a hugh amount of self confidence aswell. And lets be real, if you perform it in a commercial gym, everyone, Including the big weight boys, is wachting you while absolutely beasting. Keep up the good work, subbed!
Haha definitely, muscle up is a game changer in this regard. You get automatic respect level up :D thank you for positive word and subscribtion. Means a loot to me especially during this initial phase of the channel.
Excellent video - very well researched, honest, and informative without any extraneous bs. I don't hit the subscribe button often but had to do it after watching this video. Best of luck with your channel, cheering for you from Boston!
Just discovered your channel and loving it.
Great video really nice explanid!
I died when you say it depends saw it coming :D!
Haha i think most expected it, but lets be real this is an answer in most cases. Especially if we want to get deeper in the subject. Thank you for positive words ;)
The outro makes you more human, someone who watches to the end is more happy about a laugh at the end. :)
2014 what a young man😀
Great montage👌
Its been a hell of a ride, thank you master, appreciate it.
I have nothing to add , amazing video
Thank you 🙏🏻 Means a lot to me
Bro I love your videos, very deep content, i love it, keep it up and you'll have eventually a million subscribers
Great video. Lots of knowledge. And the fajerfajters #$#%@# at the end just killed me.
😂😂🙏🏻
This is the most awesome video about muscle ups i've ever seen!!!!! Thank you very much!
Thank you Lucas! This is one of the older ones! Look up some of my new videos ;)
Underrated channel!!!!
Very good video.
I got injured a year and a half ago by doing muscle ups when I wasn't ready to do them properly. I got tendonitis on my wrist that made it unable to move for 10 days and then, unable to hold basic positions.
I also experienced very weird pain by doing very bad form muscle up (kipping but no chicken wing) in my arms. It felt like my tendons has been stressed too much and the long pain (lasting more than an hour after the workout) provoked nausea. That is just to tell people that you are right, don't mess with muscle up.
I would recommend to not even perform them until you have the strength to do them in strict form (meaning that you need a good pulling strength)
Clearly, the muscle up is just an ego booster just as you said it in the video. As I am now working on static skill, I don't even do muscle up anymore.
Don't rush progression.
Again, very informative video and great content.
Thank you for proving one of important points. I think that most people wont really benefit that as much, you are right. We gotta start treating this moves as party tricks - and one of next projects of mine will actualy adress this problem in some way. Thank you for the comment and the support. Highly appreciated.
@@FrinksmovementTV The party trick idea is an interesting thing, I will wait to see you arguing about it.
Man, I love muscle ups, they're AWESOME. Great vid, informative and entertaining
You do muscle ups to train your pulling strength or to impress others, I do muscle ups because the parallel bars at the park were too wide for me so I could only do straight bar dips atop of the pullup bar.
We are not the same
Jokes aside, great video and as everyone has pointed out, your channel is severely underrated.
Thank you! Good to see you on the older video ;)
After my competitive swimming career I will slowly build up the prerequisites to do the muscle up and after that start with band assisted muscle ups until I get 5-6 clean reps before I attempt a normal shoulder width grip.
Sounds like a plan!
Frinksmovement TV actually I started training for a front lever to improve my swimming last week and came across your channel yesterday. After a warmup I do 1 leg straight, 1 leg tucked front levers, holds on tuck front levers, hanging L-sit holds and hanging tuck holds. My best weighted pull up set was 5x bodyweight (85kg) + 25kg but that was after swimming 6,5km.
@@landerhendrickx3522 I think its awesome man. Keep it up 👍 im very interested in the results
You did a great job, may I ask what software you used to edit this video?
i think that the best thing about the muscle up is how good of a goal it is
All I know is:
The Muscle Up is NOT just a Party Trick that just needs the right technique
I was more than strong enough to do the muscle up by resistance training standards
But it took weeks of specific training for the ring muscle up to actually get just 1 clean rep
Training the transition is very important and proves that it’s not just a simple trick
Yes, muscle ups are not just a flashy trick, I'm doing it in every single one of my training sessions when I can, and I've grown considerably strong. My ring muscle ups and strict muscle ups have improved too. And overall my pulling and pushing strength has increased significally. Muscle ups are king.
Great Video !!!!!!!
Thank you for the support ;)
Nice analysis! 👍🏼
This channel is 🥇
Quality content 👍
I had (and have a little) costochondritis while training muscle up on rings. But didn´t know the name of the pain, now I know it☺
Great video. Training for Muscle Up gave me golfer’s elbow, should have increased my training volume much slower than I did and stopped training when I first started feeling pain…
What is the name of all songs in the video?
Dear all,
I got a question, after I watched the whole video( thanks btw for the incredible and valuable content) it raised me a couple of doubts...
The video itself explain perfectly all the pro and cons of the movement itself.
My question is considering that there are many videos on TH-cam, which most of the time they even contradict each other:
What is the best progression suggest to learn a clean explosive muscle up at the bar?
I'm currently able to do quite a considerable amount of pull ups but no idea where and how to start to apporach the learning of this skill.
What do you ultimately suggest?
Thanks a lot in advance
Hey! Thank you for the comment. I highly recommend starting with once a week heavy weighted pullups and second day (or two days) high pullups. If you can already do many pullups - your goal is to increase weight on weighted and increase height on high pullups - eventually you will hit the muscle up this way 👍
@@FrinksmovementTV
Hi thanks a lot once more for the video first and secondly for the prompt reply.
I'll definitely start to do so then, I unfortunately have only a 10kg vest and I was able to do probably around 6x6 with it, now I will start with high push ups then.
Thanks a lot once more hopefully in this 2021 I'd manage to learn one with a clean form!
@@nicolarossini1938 Good luck!!
I didn't know you're from Poland until the firefighter fail at the end, even tho it was censored it sounded like 'kurwa' haha
what you think about body weight book workout for men, Sean Bartram
and how affective you see the program training of it
Hello! Im gonna be completely honest with you. I did not read the book! Will look it up ;)
i just pulled off my first calishenic skill after 2 mounths of training which is the L sit 2 days ago
i hope to get the mussle up next but man i suck at pull ups i can do only 8
14:19 Yes it's your boy 😂😂😂👌🙏
Bro, there are some article or paper that you have read/heard about the Muscle Ups recquire approximately 30~40% of bodyweight? Can you link it to me?
8:29 80x0,35= 28 & 80x 0,4= 32 ;)
I've been training for years trying to do a muscle up, its driving me crazy
Do you need some help? Let me know if I can help you with some tips
@@FrinksmovementTV I'd love any tips you've got, thank you!!
@@LittlePatter8 What is your 1RM weighted pull up?
@@FrinksmovementTV 35kg and i weigh 82kg
@@LittlePatter8 I would say get your pull ups to 40KG at the same BW and start slowly training with bands - do couple of singles with quite strong band for a month and only strive to improve form. Afterwards start working with less intense bands
Really excellent video!! I started training on rings about 6 months ago. When I finally got my first strict ring muscle up, I immediately made the mistake of overtraining it for a couple weeks. I developed some elbow pain and decided to drop the movement for now. Thankfully my elbows are feeling great now, because I do lots of bicep curls/wrist and finger extension work for the sake of prehab after my workouts. I will wait until my weighted pull ups and dips on the rings are at about 40% before I start regularly doing muscle ups again. Right now I’m at 25% body weight added for those. Thank you again for the really great video, your content is high quality and I hope you’re feeling healthy!
damn u strong.. nice video btw !!!
am I the only one that didn't want to go for muscle up when I was starting??
my goal was Front Lever Rows and Iron Cross.... still is tbh xD
nice video.
There’s 2 kinds of guys in the guy. The guys that can’t muscle up and the kind that can muscle up.
First of all congrats to your job!
2. On 24 dec. I made 100 Muscle-ups, my new PR (after 70, last year) in less then 50minutes. I was 100% that I will have pains in my body several days, but.. surprise.. nothing ! :D A lil bit I felt in my forearm and my back a light muscle cramps. The last 5 Muscle Ups I made very hard, but 95 were easy. 19x5 sets.
3. WHat I wanna say is that I have 190cm and 91kgs, Muscle-Ups are OK, but I cannot do a front lever, back lever, planche.. I am working on them but it feels for me that are impossible movements. What do you say, Can I make them once in my life? :)) I am learning them since several years..OK not very focused on them, bcz I make Triathlon and Crossfit too, but always it feels like something impossible. Which kind of trainings do you recommend for my body? weighted movements, or isometric trainings? (My legs are "big" bcz of cycling )
You got to specialize in the movements and maybe change your training because if you did 100 muscle ups ( with not a lot of kipping ) in 1 hour I really believe that you have the strength to do almost every pull movement.
Planche and push movements are other history, but the same you gotta start training around the moves.

Your kinda right 😂 prawie
i tore my forearms doing ring muscle up lolö.
