Can someone explain what muscle changes do you need for one arm pull ups? Do muscle fibres need to change to short stamina / high power or something? I can do over 20 pull ups, but I could barely pull an inch with one arm and I got muscular body, muscular arms.
Hey man, muscle fibre change by training is a concept NOT that well established yet by science. For strength sports it also seem not to matter as much because when you look at powerlifters and their fiber distribution, it doesn't significantly differ from a normal distribution. It plays a role but not as huge. What I would rather focus on - switch to more strength based training, higher intensity. For you part about The Line of Pull from this video is a must to watch as well. Good luck!
@@FrinksmovementTV Thanks! Just finished watching the entire video and found it super informative. Amazing work, inspiring. I will start focusing more on one arm pull up.

Epic video man! I almost felt out of my chair when I see the pronated grip start and supinated grip finish OAP/OAC on the bar. I had no idea this movement is also possible on the bar. I also think bar supinated OAC is the hardest among all variations, getting out of the dead hang with suboptimal lat activation and having to fight the rotation is ultra difficult. Glad I also made it into the video at the end too!
Bar pronated is harder than bar supinated for me. I guess it comes down to individual weakness. I have no problem pulling myself off the deadhang but I can't get above 30% of the rom
Thank you man! Yeah I think the discussion is really nuanced. We have to be aware of ROM differences, standards for each form etc. Most people that I interviewed for this project agree with it, that one arm chin up on the bar is the hardest variation if we are not taking any twist into consideration.
It's actually going to be easier for most people to get the supinated OAC first, since the biceps helps a lot more for the movement. And I don't see why your lats would be in a bad position it's quite the opposite.
@@bastien8418 I would say if we talk about rings OAC that's true. If we standardise the ROM I believe the instability will make supinated version harder

Back in the times of my Street Workout journey, I learnt one arm pullups by doing 2 exercises: 1) Normal pullups but using 1/2/3 fingers on the other hand (until failure) 2) Negative pullups - going up with 2 hands, going down on one hand as slow as possible Usually on the start of the training session I tried to do the pullup with one hand.

I only even tried to do a TRUE one armed pull up early 2022, and to my surprise, I did it both left and right hand, but with much strain. As a kid, I'd do the one-armed with holding the arm I use with the other, but had been doing sets of pullups for decades. I noticed I had to avoid the strain, as it is what causes injury, obviously. I built up the strength of the tendons and ligaments of the arm and shoulder FOR the exercise by doing single reps, because the strength was there, but the support was not used to the force I applied. This helped me avoid injury. I am now able to do with either arm, but I never ever ever try to max ANYTHING. The exercise is dangerous if you push yourself too far too fast, period
Great work man. When I had a 55 kg pull up at 75 kg bodyweight, I could pull maybe 30 % of the ROM from deadhang on right arm and barely anything on left. But I never trained for it, just tried without a warm up.
Look who is back! Thanks for another great video. This was really insightful even though OAC is not something I'm currently working on. I'll be coming back to watch it again when I near ~70% bw weighted pull up.
This could not have come at a better time. I'm so close to it. Almost there. Can do a 10s slow negative but that's way too demanding so I don't do them. Currently doing 3 reps with 10lbs of pulley system assistance (plus a bit of friction). Will move to 5lbs when I get 5 reps. But going from 3 reps to 5 reps is incredibly tough. I had never thought that increasing only 2 reps would be this hard and take this long time. If things go right I should get one (maybe even more than one) by June, which marks my 3 year anniversary with Calisthenics.
I really love the break down of the different ways to do an OAP. It’s given me a better understanding of how they work mechanically which approach I would want to pursue! I loved your Front Lever video and this is at least equally amazing or even better!
I had to wait so long before you mentioned The Super Athletes! When you mentioned the inspiration for one arm pull-ups at the beginning, I was like "What about The Super Athletes?! Jasper Benincasa and Marvin Eder were the GOAT!" With that said, your video is nothing short of excellent, and you made me realize why it was very difficult for me to get my chin over the bar in heavy weighted pull-ups: my forearms are quite long, so if they stay vertical, even with maximal flexion, I can at best punch the bar with my chin. I didn't worry about it and just kept pulling hard regardless, but it's a great explanation to have in my pocket now!
Thank you so much man. I appreciate you giving your feedback here. Yeah haha I literally had so many moments where I was like "I have to mention him, and him, and this" but then I look at the video and its already like 50 mins long. But yeah, "The Super Athletes" had to be here :) Hope all good is for you brother! Take care!
Excellent video, very informative, thank you for you time and effort, as someone who has done a one arm pullup with +20kg extra weight, and can do very slow one arm pullups no monentum whatsoever up and down at 44 yrs old I feel I can comment, I think firstly there is a naturally higher level of pound for pound strength than average person involved in those who achieve clean proper oaps, stronger muscles for size and stronger tendons, I was always strong at climbing things when younger (but was also very active) and even beat a very high level gymnast at school in a climbing test (ps. I have never done any gymnastics ever, nor had access to workout bars when younger I live in Ireland where its simply not popular) , it's common in calisthenics to see strong pullers as opposed to strong pushers, you tend to gravitate to what your good at and that for me is pull, but I also work hard at push, I can dip over double bodyweight on rings for reps and have achieved a few seconds full planche at 43 yrs old, but pulling is definitely my strongest area, I have done a LOT of weighted pullups over the years and still do them once or twice weekly, I train very hard but smart listening to my body and mostly with lighter weights for reps from 20kg to 50kg, but have pulled over double bodyweight in pullup before. I feel this keeps my muscles, tendons and joints prepared and conditioned for the strain and pressure of regularly doing the oap and I'm sure there is obviously some correlation between how much extra weight you can pull two handed and the strength required for oap. I am lean naturally yes in the mid 60s somewhere in kgs but I am also fairly tall in Calisthenics terms at 177cm with long lean limbs. I started Calisthenics properly at 40 years old when I achieved several Bruce lee one arm 2 finger pushups on a bet with my dad within a couple of months (I could already do high reps of one arm pullups) , then got hooked on achieving strength skills, I was kickboxing for a decade before so already had a very high level of fitness, but the main point I can share with people is that I was, always very consistent, smart and dedicated with my training not ego lifting or training, always working on basics, pullups, pushups, dips in proper form were my main focus I did weights also, kettlebells, barbell deadlift, squat, dB bench press mostly as I only did functional stuff that made me a better athlete. I write this not to brag but to inspire others on what's possible even at an advanced age, if you want the OAP, stay consistent at pulling and use intelligent progressions you feel benefit you as every individual is different in how they respond, most importantly with patience as strong tendons are really important in these strength skills and they take a lot longer than muscles to strengthen, spend more time on the bar, take your time, and watch this great video for tips💪
Wow, Can't tell how much I appreciate these sort of comments. It was a great read and thank you for sharing your story. +20KG One arm Pull up sounds absolutely crazy!
Really helpfull man, im 37, 86kg at 184cm, im working towards the oap, on top of this as you said, im a pusher it seems, since my rugby days my nerves are prepared to push and not pull as much, i did lot of climbing prior to that but it has been long abandoned, i always feel really strong with pushing, I dont why but i have this theory, there is some correlation, that the overall weight is not entirely correlated to muscular mass that is not fat in fit individuals, but maybe bone density, limbs lenght etc, i dont know really, but many calistenic moves like these seems so so hard, even after years of training, like if the semi-heavy semi-tall guys have it harder.
@@pd2180 You are welcome, thanks for your comment and yes you are onto something with your theory, as I was tested in my local gym for muscle percentage on my body, there were 320 members and I had highest by a long way %, there were guys much bigger, heavier and looked bulkier but I had much more muscle mass to weight ratio than they had, I was told I had really strong tendons by a physio before too, and yes you probably as more adept at pushing through the type of training you focused on for so long also, but keep at the oap no doubt you will achieve it, a big benefit that you have climbing background, I understand your not light which makes it tougher but will just take a bit more time, you sound an experienced athlete so no doubt you will be training smart also, best of luck and stay healthy💪
@@pd2180 And yes of course taller heavier guys will have a harder time as physics makes it more difficult, just look at the height of the top calisthenics athletes and gymnasts they are mostly all on the shorter side even if they are heavy👍
Top level information. The quality of the video and sounds are perfect. The knowledge shared is invaluable. Best content ever regarding not only pull up or chin up or OAP and OAC… but a overall and deep look on pulling in general. Thanks
By no means I am into calisthenics (I'm more of a powerlifter), but this movie actually made me thinking that I should implement pull-ups in my routine, specially during deload weeks. At some point of my life I was able to pull-up 21 times (with body weight about 95kgs), but these days are long gone :D Still, I respect ammount of work you put into this film, that is so unexpected in current era of TH-cam where most of materials are short and not deeply diving. Once again - RESPECT for this.

Personally I calculated the required amount of weighted pull up by subtracting the weight of arm from bodyweight when doing OAC. İmo 85-90% of bw weighted pullup is sufficient. Btw I got my first OAC by partials and progressive ROM
@@FrinksmovementTV i dont know bro, i have been training at home since 2018, therefore i dont have access to weight belt. but i do remember i was able to do weighted chinup 75-80% of my bodyweight in 2018. and i only started OAC training in 2020 and got it in 2.5 months

DUDE! You have almost every calisthenics influencer I follow in your comments that is amazing. I must watch this even though I've already done OAP/OAC before
1. Max holds in top position. 2. Negatives that fight like help. 3. Opposite hand spot help first on wrist, then forearm, then bicep, last on shoulder before taking hand spot completely off. 4. never did any weighted pullup, but usually do rbetween 500 and 700 regular pullups/chinups per week.
I've seen that reddit post on bodyweight fitness, and the climbing subreddit, both when looking for OAP weighted pullup info, used it as a guide and now finally achieved one arm pullup for once!
Man your videos are getting better and better every single time. Not just in the way you educate us, but in the way you entertain us at the same time. Keep up the great work. You are inspiring!
I recently came across a method mentioned by Hampton from Hybrid calisthenics. It was about using a narrow grip (I do it on one gymnastics ring) as a progression tool to achieve the first OAP. Since I am bouldering 3 times a week for about 15 months and have my first pullup achieved in august 2022, I tried to achieve the OAP. I have more goals in calisthenics and bouldering, so I wasn't superrfocused on achieving the OAP. I got stuck on doing 12-14 normal pullups for half a year in my routine training programm, then added weight with weightvests to achieve 8 with 10kg vest and now 4 with 30kg. I still feel like the progress ist really slow without having soreness or anything. Now, by switching to narrow grip pullups, I had my first soreness in die lats in a very long time and the movement itself gives me great confidence to get there soon.
Fantastic information!, I never was good at unilateral pull ups(bad form one rep) a couple of kilograms less bodyweight(78 to 73) makes a big difference for me. Sadly when I do this I lose allot of strenght in classic fitness exercises even when I don't lose much muscles and almost only body fat. This video motivated me for reprogram in my training
Bro I was just wondering how different the pronated version is different from the supinated one, then your video dropped and it answered this question and many more I had. Thank you for your great service for the calisthenics community.
I never thought I'd enjoy geeking out about One Arm Chin-ups so much, but here you've got me geeking out for over an hour straight with this epic production lol. To add to the data: My weighted chin-up max was 80% of my bodyweight when I was able to do my first OAC. But I NEVER tried weighted chin-ups until AFTER I had already gotten a supinated bar OAC on both arms. I had 1 bar OAP on each arm almost automatically (trained it 4 times). Weight at the time: 74.8kg / 165 lbs Height: 5'10" Will definitely fill out the arm measurements as soon as I get a ruler lol. To this day, I absolutely CANNOT do a ring OAC though. Currently working on that one.

Thanks
17:00 I felt that. I got my first unilateral pull on the rings as a chin up and took weeks to do one on the bar
Interesting! Thank you for sharing
The man is back, time to sit back, learn and be entertained! Happy new year as well
have a good watch! Happy new year!
Thank you so much for this wonderful video! We need more researchers like you in the community. Almost no research is done in calisthenics compared to weightlifting and you are single-handedly moving the discipline forward!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Man this video is excellent. One of the most thorough analysis I’ve seen in a very long time. Very well done 👏🏾
As a climber I can do 20 pullups. but I can only do 8 chin ups....
You probably have very strong Brachialis and Radiobrachialis, but relatively weak Biceps Brachii
WTF
bro has 1 inch biceps
Cant fathom the effort you have put into making this video. Hat off to your bro !
Thanks a ton!
A movie on one arm pull up was the last thing i expected for the humanity Lmao
Missed your videos. Happy you're back a high quality video.
Happy to be back!
Wow. This is incredible. I just got into calisthenics and if this is what the content is like I'm here to stay man
There’s actually no worse subreddit in terms of moderation than BWF. It’s unfathomable. Too bad they missed out on an awesome opportunity because of power hungry psycho mods. This video is one of the greatest things ever uploaded to TH-cam. Amazing work
Totally agree. It was a little better before and now it's shit.
Yeah, nothing more annoying than extreme mods
@Robert DEL POPOLO That was like 6-7 years ago. No one on the BWF sub cares about that anymore.
Wait what was wrong with the sub???
To Frinksmovement on "Problem with One Arm Pull Up" video.
Each week remove one finger around bar makes other arm stronger until last finger is not needed giving one arm pull up.
Your exercise analysis then quantitative design of survey shows genuine science skill that inspires me to improve my own projects. I felt good watching your highly coherent description especially survey details with reasoning designed for a revealing result. Pure joy to watch a Kenobi-like master completely connect many dots that reveal underlying characteristics for better understanding. Pat on the back support to those able to experience and live life with deeper understanding.

Amazing work! It's so good that it feels like a Netflix documentary 😂
Thank you so much! Glad you like it
Not even started the video and already got my thumbs up, if you're a true calisthenics athlete YOU LOOK FORWARD to this content. Keep it up my guy and always excited to watch any new videos
Legend! Thank you for the support. Im already excited about next projects that will come this year ;)
I aint watching allat
With your sh*t grammar, that’s not surprising

Wow. I'm amazed that there is a film on one arm pull-ups. I love the movement ... I even dream about it from time to time xD Cheers!
Personally I calculated the required amount of weighted pull up by subtracting the weight of arm from bodyweight when doing OAC. İmo 85-90% of bw weighted pullup is sufficient. Btw I got my first OAC by partials and progressive ROM
Oh, do you remember your weighted pull up when you got one arm?
@@FrinksmovementTV i dont know bro, i have been training at home since 2018, therefore i dont have access to weight belt. but i do remember i was able to do weighted chinup 75-80% of my bodyweight in 2018. and i only started OAC training in 2020 and got it in 2.5 months
@@dikbashli Got it, thanks for sharing ;)
Hopefully y’all upload again❤
Oh hell yeah, this is my New Year's Eve entertainment.
Enjoy!
We dont deserve this amazing documentary, the amount of work you put in is ridiculous. The fact that one in 12 people who come across the video just pop a like is indicative of its value
Thank you for nice words!
@@FrinksmovementTV :)
I wanna get up to those “bar supinated OACs” to be training just like my guy Uncle Iroh from Avatar the last air bender.
Hahah, good luck with that then man
Duuuuuuuuude we are missing you so much
lmao completely saw the post getting removed coming. Reddit is trash
i achieved my one arm pull up today - Thanks mate, its all because of the scientific facts youve given in the video - Great work - Salud!
So, I stopped training calisthenics at April of 2020, but watching this makes me want to get back to it, specifically the one arm pull up. Thank you man!
Wow that's amazing! Good luck with your training!
Woah, this channel is a goldmine and as a film making student into filmmaking you have inspired me!
Im glad I did!
Incredible video! Truly one of the best calisthenics videos on TH-cam. Cannot wait to see what you do in the future. Changing the calisthenics game with science and movies! Kudos
I appreciate that! Let's go for it!
This is some next level content, your Channel has to blow man, great work
Thank you so much
This is amazing! Great work and research. I'm thinking you should do a video on leg exercises and analyze that one day.
Recently found out about your channel, the YT algorithym will bless you soon enough. You have a great future, keep grinding it out!
Appreciate your words!
A Impressive amount of work and research went in to this video.
Im glad it presents itself in this way. It was all worth it if its helpful for someone
I can't express in words how much I love to watch your videos
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it and that's why I do it
I thought to myself what could he possibly have to say for an hour about the one arm pullup. I was blown away by how important and relatable everything you said was regarding calisthenics.
Al fin subis un video justo ayer entre a tu canal a ver si habia algo nuevo, el mejor canal que existe en toda la calistenia
I translated your words to English. Thank you!
DUDE! You have almost every calisthenics influencer I follow in your comments that is amazing. I must watch this even though I've already done OAP/OAC before
I hope you enjoy! Thank you for nice words!
1hr 17min video on a one armed pull-up! I had to watch, great video!
Bro mad respect for you....... So much knowledge to gain in just one video....... You definitely deserve millions of subscribers, keep educatin' us
So nice of you! Thank you
I've seen that reddit post on bodyweight fitness, and the climbing subreddit, both when looking for OAP weighted pullup info, used it as a guide and now finally achieved one arm pullup for once!
Wow that's awesome! Congrats!
very detailed and informative video on the oap, underrated channel
I appreciate that!
This is fantastic! Extremely maticulous & thorough! Great video man!

Thank you! Missed you all too!
such a great video please keep doing that series!
Thanks! That's the plan!
Your content is so unique and helpful, keep it up
I will! Thank you!
This is awesome to hear! Good luck with your training! What particular changes you gonna make?
Damn, the amount of analysis, knowledge and visuals are just unreal! This is a very nice video my friend! Thank you so much!
Appreciate it ;)
Bro I was just wondering how different the pronated version is different from the supinated one, then your video dropped and it answered this question and many more I had. Thank you for your great service for the calisthenics community.
Thank you for watching! Glad you enjoyed!
I can’t do 1 supinated pull up. Feels like my forearms will twist off at the bottom of the movement. But I can do 12 good pull ups with pronated form
Talk about high quality content!!!
Great efforts man, each second was worth watching.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing video. This is the kind of thing that inspires me to train more. I think this would be a great hopping off point for a podcast.
As usual, your videos are very well prepared, documented, and illustrated. I renovate my congrats.
Thank you!
You're back!!! and with an EXCELLENT new video!!!
So glad to be back!
Big respect for the amount of work you did!
Thank you for watching!
I never thought I'd enjoy geeking out about One Arm Chin-ups so much, but here you've got me geeking out for over an hour straight with this epic production lol.
To add to the data:
My weighted chin-up max was 80% of my bodyweight when I was able to do my first OAC.
But I NEVER tried weighted chin-ups until AFTER I had already gotten a supinated bar OAC on both arms.
I had 1 bar OAP on each arm almost automatically (trained it 4 times).
Weight at the time: 74.8kg / 165 lbs
Height: 5'10"
Will definitely fill out the arm measurements as soon as I get a ruler lol.
To this day, I absolutely CANNOT do a ring OAC though.
Currently working on that one.
Thank you so much! Really awesome to hear you enjoyed! And thank you for the additional data! Good luck on your way to get ring OAC ;)
Absolutely amazingly well done video. Fascinating stuff. This has answered so many questions I had about one arms pull ups
Huge props to you dude, this looks like tons of hard work and dedication
