China is NOT what we expected… 🇨🇳 | First Impressions of Shanghai, China 2024

  • Imagine giving up your email, your maps and most of your essentials. I know, I know, I really dislike this title - but the truth is it actually surprised us so much
China is not what you think, it's not an easy country to navigate as a first time, say goodbye to your trusty maps, apps and more but once you get past that - you'll be in for many suprises.
A glimpse into our first impressions of China and take a look at the trials and tribulations of arriving in China.
We land in Shanghai Pudong Airport and stay in Shanghai for a few days - you'll find out how much accommodation costs in Shanghai, some of the streetfood available in Shanghai and more.

We are Pat & Giulia, a couple from 🇬🇧 and 🇮🇹 living in London.
We decided to go travelling and ended up living getting stuck in Malaysia during 2020 which spurred the creation of this channel, we're now back on the road after a lengthy hiatus!
We're Malaysian enthusiasts who enjoy discovering spots off the tourist trail and don’t like taking ourselves too seriously. We're not here to be vloggers or to be famous, we're not necessarily here to "inspire" anyone to travel either - just enjoy the spontaneous fun of it, weird situations and of course making local friends.

China's subway security checks are not solely targeted at terrorist attacks, but rather at ordinary people unconsciously carrying potentially flammable objects such as alcohol, gasoline, combustibles, and gases. Ordinary people carrying dangerous goods may not know that they are dangerous goods.

The security checks are normal in whole China. And at all places cameras are everywhere - that's the Chinese way of supporting the most important human right: the right to live, which entails security. The Chinese don't feel at all harassed by it, for they know: the government works for the safety of the people. Something you can't imagine in a democracy combined with capitalism.

Hi! You can travel from Shanghai to Suzhou. Suzhou has preserved the ancient city intact, and the building height in the area is limited. The highest point cannot exceed the height of Beisi tower. In addition, Suzhou also has high-rise buildings, mainly near Dongfangzhimen subway station. The distance between Shanghai and Suzhou is about 100km. If you choose to take the train, you usually need to take the high-speed train. It takes about half an hour to get to Suzhou, and the ticket price is about 40 RMB. If you are not very financially well-off, you can take the ordinary speed train, which takes about 1 hour to get to Suzhou, and the ticket price is 14.5 RMB. In addition, it feels crazy that you can even take the subway from Shanghai to Suzhou. The main transfer point is Huaqiao Station (take Shanghai Metro Line 11 to Huaqiao and then transfer to Suzhou Metro). I tried to go from Shanghai Xujiahui Subway Station to Suzhou Beisi tower Subway Station. It took a total of 3.5 hours and the ticket price was a total of 18 RMB.

The reason is that China is progressing (it's already at 90, wants 100, past 100, 110, 120.) We Americans for the most part stopped when we reached 80/100 and we were on top of the world ~100 yrs ago. Nothing actually changed in 100 yrs... Compared to Japan and South Korea, almost everything in China is bigger, wider, and grander since China is 25 times larger than Japan and 96 times larger than South Korea. Population-wise, China’s population is 11.2 times that of Japan and 27.3 times that of South Korea. Apparently, both Japan and South Korea have higher population densities than that of China. Unlike in China, logically, Japan and South Korea try to use trilingual (Chinese is included) instead of bilingual systems to attract international tourists. If everything is considered, uniformly using the existing bilingual system (domestic common language Chinese + International common language English) throughout China is good enough.

Hey, man, how come you eat all the delicious food and don't share it with your girlfriend at all? Butterfly crisp is a very famous snack.
