    Let's have a talk and a really basic overview of the revered McCulloch 10-10 chainsaw. After our trip to Mark Heimann's museum I picked up a few 10 series Macs and got them running again.
    The 10-10 chassis is a classic firewood style saw produced in many iterations over about 3 decades (late 60s-late 90s) by the McCulloch Corporation.
    They're loud, they vibrate a lot and they're powerful. A classic chainsaw that'll leave a grin on your face.
    The saws featured in the video are all later model versions which can be told apart by the electronic ignition instead of points, the left handed starters instead of right hand and the chain brake covers.
    These all only required basic fuel system work to get running again and make a great addition to any collectors repertoire.
    These are a very common saw but sought after by many folks for many different reason.
    Sit down and watch me BS my way through talking about them!

    The 1-10 through 5-10 were normally equipped with the McCulloch "Bullfrog" carburetor, of course there were always exceptions with McCulloch.
    The actual 10-10 models were always equipped with the cube type carburetor, either Walbro SDC or Tillotson HS.
    1-10 through 3-10 and 10-10 models were 54 cc.
    The PM55, 555, and 570 plus the 10-10S models were all 57 cc.
    There were two models @ 60 cc (PM60 and SP60)
    The 4-10 through 7-10, PM700, PM4300, CP70 and CP70L and the SP70 were all 71 cc.
    The SP80, 81, 81E, CP80DX, PM850, 805, 800, 850 Super, Double Eagle 80, and PM8200 were all 82 cc.

    I bought a 10-10 from Serum Equipment in Montague, Massachusetts in 1972. It still cuts up storm! As you said it's loud as hell and it sure does vibrate. It came with a 16" bar but, over the years, I put on a 20". Thanks for mentioning where 'grilles' can be bought. I'm in need of one.

    I was given a Pro Mac 10-10, a Stihl MS170 and a Dolmar Sachs 112. I'm new to working on two strokes but feel confident after freeing the rings up in an Echo backpack blower that had a defect in the cylinder. I didn't install the new piston kit as I wanted to see how my repair went using a Dremel, honing and a file. 12 hours so far and everything looks great through the exhaust port.

    I have a PM 10-10 that runs great, I was thinking of re-ringing it and doing some other stuff to it. I've been looking for a saw shop in PA that handles "ole yellers" like these, and it seems like you guys fix em up! I live in Harrisburg and might bring it in one day! Oh by the way, the Pro Macs you had on display were the 77 to 82 generation.

    These two stroke engines by McCulloch were highly sought after by the Go-Kart racing community especially in P.A., I remember one of my hot rod friends in MA building a Go Kart with one of these 60's McCulloch motors 1969-70, It was a Screamer!!! with lots of Giddy Up & Go! super quick...compared to the Briggs & Tecumseh's etc

    In the late '60s and early '70s we had 10-10s and 6-10 at the ranch in Montana and just used the nuts off them. I wouldn't go back to them now, of course, but my dad and his father both grew up using Humbolt misery whips in big ponderosa and slow-growth Doug fir, so we really thought we had hotrods with the little Macs.

    The cylinder/crankcase that you show is compatible with either the points or the electronic ignition coil. Early models were points coil only and later were electronic coil only, but there were transition models like that could be used with either type coil with an appropriate spacer to mount the coil.

    My dad had a Pro Mac 10-10 mid to late ‘70s. I used the saw a little here and there, one morning he took me outside before he left for work and showed me some trees and brush that he wanted me to cut and stack, I did, I was probably 10 or 11 😂.

  • @markheimann2735
    @markheimann2735 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The earliest electronic ignitions were two piece systems found on the SP81E and early PM850, most of those were eventually changed to the one piece unit. The same one piece electronic ignition coils from the 10 Series also works on the 600 Series saws and vice versa if you correct the spark plug lead, longer on the 600 Series and shorter on the 10 Series.
    The RH start flywheels are smaller in diameter but the magnets are in the same location and the coil has adequate adjustment to work on either version.
    The 12 and 24 fin flywheels from the LH start saws are interchangeable, the 18 fin flywheels on the PM800 and related models must be used with the shorter crankshaft found on the 800 models.

    • @TraverseCreekInc
      @TraverseCreekInc  ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of the standard maintenance parts are available through the aftermarket. For the major parts it's probably best to have a parts saw or two around. These saws are pretty common, if you keep your eyes out for em you'll find em!

    Hey I have a mac 10 10 that just keeps bogging out full throttle. Starts fine runs fine thought it was the carb rebuilt the carb replaced fuel filter and lines same issue idles fine runs good will not go full throttle boggs down and dies. So I figured crank seals replaced the crank seals and same issue gapped the points to 19 thou do you think I could be losing spark high end or some problem still with carb? It's driving me crazy!! Maybe carbon in exhaust ports or something I have no clue I thought I had it at the crank seals

    • @TraverseCreekInc
      @TraverseCreekInc  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Did you do a pressure and vac test?
      Could be leaking air somewhere other than what you already checked. Start there

    • @chancemacdonald2046
      @chancemacdonald2046 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @TraverseCreekInc alright yeah I don't have a pressure tester gonna have to get one. It definately seems like an air leak just have to find it. I hope it's not the seal where the upper and lower of the motor connect I don't want to have pull the whole thing apart lol but I will if I have to. When I first tested with brake clean it died when I sprayed by the crank seal I will try it again and see if it still boggs out when I spray there even after I replaced the crank seal. My pull cord keeps popping off the thing so I have to keep winding it every time I pull u gave up the other day going to head back to it tonight

    Chainsaw Corner says it has breaker points, so not electronic....made from 1975 to 1977...who is correct? I have no idea, you will have to inspect it to see...I have 4 of the 7-10 models and they are all breaker points...made in the 1970's...I have a Homelite made in 1966 with original electronic ignition...I was astounded when I inspected it and then got it running. It's 82cc if I recall correctly...I'm not getting up out of my chair to go find the model number...they were almost 20 years ahead of the industry...that's why I hate stuff made in China today. Little Communist bastards are taking over and destroying our domestic industry and the middle class.
