Something I would to add, is that (according to some) the Count may be the actual Servant contracted with Fujimaru, as he can be seen protecting them (in the mind/dream realm) even when they had supposedly ended their contracts with every other Servant after Solomon.

That’s an interesting theory. It would certainly explain why Dantes is so loyal to Ritsuka and how he’s stuck around for so long even after Solomon’s defeat (since like you said, Ritsuka dissolved all their contracts with their Servants, yet Dantes was still present). Heck, the whole reason why he’s in Melty Blood is to bring Mash back to Chaldea.

Perhaps, if you want to seek out a more focused characterization of Edmond Dantes, you should look for the CD Drama around him and The Monte Cristo of the Nasuverse, and how he was the one that put an end to Michael Roa Valdamjong in the FGO timeline, the person that caused most of his pain and suffering in his Fate counterpart. It is an extremely interesting and cool read/listen, consider it.

after reading "The Count of Monte Cristo", I would agree that the Servant Count of Monte Cristo's spirit origin is more heavily influenced when his desire for revenge was at its strongest in order for him to fit his class type. And while he acknowledges that Edmund Dante found peace at the end of the story, that stage of the character's life would be unfit for the class of Avenger as I interpret the class as something similar to the beserker class. That is, a key aspect/characteristic must be constantly present to fit the class rather than a skill from their history that the other classes are based on.

Such a great video covering my favorite servant, thank you for this!
I think some more interesting points about Dantès are the following: apparently his design, specifically the first ascension, resembles a post-revolutionary suit, which fits the time period he lived in. The design he’s given for his drama CD, designed by the same artist who drew Camazotz (Routo Usagi), leans much more into his mysterious and elegant aristocratic persona of the Count and gives us an idea of what he looked like in his lifetime in the fate universe.
As for his skills, the names suit him perfectly and I like that he has solid offensive power, but I think he’s lacking too much in defensive capabilities. He needs support if he’s not supposed to die early on (even at LV.120), which honestly does him such a disservice, considering his character goes through hellish experiences that might’ve killed the average human, but are meant to show how resilient and determined he was, how hope made him stronger. A guts or evade skill on him would’ve been nice.
I’ll say this much about his personality: I think Dantès is someone who acts rationally, but isn’t always direct with others. Many have trouble keeping up with his way of speaking, it’s even joked about in a "You’ve Lost Ritsuka Fujimaru“ episode. As such it may comes across like he’s saying half-truths (and he definitely does this in the Prison Tower event, hiding until the end that this action was meant to save Fujimaru from a deadly curse), but at his core he’s very genuine and driven by a strong sense of justice, both because he’s someone who was wronged so severely in life but also because throughout his life he helped those in need, both before and after his imprisonment. You could say it’s in his nature.
His class doesn’t allow him to let go of his feelings of anger that fuel his revenge (specifically the oblivion correction passive functions like this in the lore), so it’s very likely he plays along with it and potentially exaggerates the act to the point it comes across as uncaring or absurd to people. But even going all the way back to the Garden of Sinners event it’s clear he cares deeply and has allied with Chaldea because they align more with his values. Shiki’s comment that he loves humanity on a fundamental level is especially noteworthy to me, as well as his own statement that he had hoped to be a tiny light of hope able to save Fujimaru, similar to how Abbé Faria had saved him. Many point out his chaotic evil alignment, but it’s important to keep in mind that the servants’s alignments are based on their self perception. Ereshkigal for example is a very beloved chaotic evil servant.
Finally, I absolutely agree that Dantès is meant to play a bigger part yet to be fully shown to us players. There is too much mystery surrounding him, from his origins in his profile being listed with a question mark (written as "Origin: Dumas’ The Count of Monte Cristo?“) to his eyes resembling those of demon pillars, not to mention how little screen time he’s had for a character whose role is something as important as guarding the main character’s subconscious 24/7. I honestly hope he appears more in Ordeal Call, he’s one of if not the most loyal servant in canon next to Mash, and I’d love to see him leave the shadows he’s so comfortable hiding in to show just how far he’s willing to go for his beliefs and solidify the bond he has with Fujimaru.

You should really have mentioned the FGO Drama CD: Heroic Spirit's Lore Strange Tales: Edmond Dantès.
It addresses all the specific differences the Fate version of Dantes has to the book version (and boy, there are quite a few things on how the "actual" Dantes (as compared to the book version that does exist within the world of FGO) was integrated into the Nasuverse, involving the Congregation of the Eighth Sacrament, Dead Apostles and the true reason why Abbé Faria was imprisoned in the Nasuverse). A comparison that I've never really found mentioned anywhere but I feel is of note is with the Phantom Stranger, of DC Comics fame. For one...well, just look at the Stranger. The dark blue mantle (that does indeed become a coat with some artists) with the matching hat and a bit of jewelry prominently on the middle of it (usually gold, but in modern times silver.
Strange, stubbornly insistent on being as indirect and vague with as many things as possible when speaking, occasionally trying others. Seemingly of great strength, yet mostly just appears (when directly) in order to nudge things in a desired direction. Grandiose and ominous with a flair for the dramatic, shrouded in more questions than you can begin to keep track of easily. And, of course, doing his best to keep an eye on things from the shadows, and firmly on the side of the heroes in spite of his shadiness.

So....according to FGO, Edmond Dantes is affiliated as "Chaotic Evi" and dislikes "Everything". He acts like a villain, says villain-worthy lines, and plays dirty...like a villain (+ his historical counterpart also has parts worthy of a villain/antihero arc)
    With all this:
Why does Edmond Dantes help us if he has declared that he doesn't care about anything and likes to bring devastation, when letting his enemies win would make the devastation that Dantes desires come true? Is he stupid?
Or is it a case of questionable or confusing writing in the same style as Koyanskaya (who "surprised expectations" and threw away a plot that was being built for more than 4 years in FGO) and Gilgamesh (who, despite many materials and Interpretations say that he is not evil, he is still the evil villain of various media in Fate)

    • @CrazyYurie
      @CrazyYurie  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +10

My understanding of how Fate alignment works is that it is more "self perception" than an actual objective rating. Gilgamesh is probably the best example of that, since he is clearly not "good". At the very least, while it uses the same terms as the DND alignment system, it does not seem to work the same way.
As for why Dantes helps us despite claiming to hate everything, I'd say it the same thing behind him claiming that he is not actually Dantes: that he lies. Asking about his likes/dislikes is a question he answers himself. There is no rule saying that he has to tell the truth. :o

As an observer of humanity he wants the best for humanity having faith in our potential best seen in FGO when he witnesses the efforts made by fujimaru mash and Chaldea which results in his assistance to our cause.
But if he doesn’t like the trajectory of humanity’s potential if he sees us lacking he will not hesitate to restart the clock and expect humanity to do better.
This can best be see in his own civilization in Uruk. Great video and there is more to his Noble Phantasm. Enfer, Chateau d'if is not his suffering in prison but his escape. He is just as badass as he uses offensively a Noble Phantasm meant to be used as a retreat/support. The actual effect of it is just being able to escape even outside reality, the reason why he can be in the dream of Chaldea's Master or go even to Shimousa without rayshifting leaving a small opening for Kotaro to enter.
I would also like to add that he has a passive noble phantasm in his flames named Monte Cristo Mythologie, which is his main offensive attack, and a Curative Noble Phantasm using his catchphrase Attendre et Espere, it can even do stat boost and resurrect the dead. Sorry Asclepius two words are more potent than your medicine made from gorgon blood. So my crack theory is when he was saying to the last master, he was revitalizing him to continue to fight the curse of Solomon since the first time he said it.
I actually do wait and hope to get a young Edmond Dantes with his riding skills or a ruler version of his old days because he would be a great fit for it. Only time will tell what would be the role of the Count of Monte Cristo in the story, he would never tell us directly even if we ask him.

I want to see a true anime adaptation of the Count of Monte Cristo. Gankutsuou was good but not a true adaptation, despite covering the novel the most out of all the movies and shows done.
