The second time I got to see Jeff, I actually met him. I told him of my first experience. It was somewhat mesmerizing to be there and have him listening to me. All the while, everyone around me and him just sank back and let me have my moment with him. He opened up a little to me, and gave me a huge hug. He also wrote something for my mother to give to her.....

He is strangely hilarious. I saw him in Maine; and at some point in the show he mumbled something indistinct. I think he said "You guys are a really great crowd to sing for" but no one heard him. Suddenly he yelled "What is it?! You guys don't speak mumble?!", which was certainly one of the highlights of the show.

I saw Neutral Milk Hotel at Boston Calling Music Festival, and it was honestly so.. surreal, just as Anthony said. It was the whole band, with the horns and everything, and hearing everyone around me, the HUGE crowd singing along, was honestly amazing. Not afraid to say that during In The Aeroplane Over The Sea, I shed a tear. They came on before The National, a band I love and was equally as excited to see. But after NMH's set, the national couldn't even compare. It was unbelievable, the range of emotion i felt seeing Neutral Milk Hotel. Anyone who is considering seeing them, do it. It's fantastic.

I saw neutral milk hotel in portland maine a few days ago. when waiting in line my friend looked over the crowd and i heard him say "this place is filled with old people and pretentious teenagers". the concert, oh my god, it was utterly amazing. my friends and I were right against the barrier between the "pit" area and the stage. when the band came out they started with I Will Bury You In Time, the audience was pretty chill at that point but still cheering and kinda in shock by the fact that we were all actually here. as you know, the end of that song kinda just goes "dee dee dee dee dee" very fast, and as he finished that song, he just instantly transitioned into Holland 1945 like "dee dee dee dee dee 1 2 3 4" and in that moment, the instrumentation and the audience absolutely EXPLODED. i don't know about other areas of the theater but people in my area were dancing and jumping and screaming the lyrics. 2 girls started grinding (these same 2 also managed to grind during 2 headed boy, which was impressive??? i guess???) some dude tried to crowd surf but failed. overall the general energy of the concert was simply amazing for the same reason as you said in the video. having so many people who had been affected by this music in one are was just amazing.

I've seen Jeff four times. On the day I saw him for the first time (9.10.2011), my father passed away (literally as I was grabbing the tickets from will call). It was heart breaking for me, but to see my favorite musician ON that day... well, that was life changing as well. I shook during the performance of 'Two Headed Boy Part 2'. That night was perfect. Jeff came out for a third encore and played 'Ferris Wheel on Fire', unplanned...

There was such a surreal, intimate quality to seeing Jeff play that I wish I could relive. From the singing along to people humming the horn parts to my friend raise his finger as high as he could while shouting "I LOVE YOU JESUS CHRIST", the crowd participation really did make it a very special show.

Saw NMH last night in Dublin, and it was one of the most marvelous experiences I have ever had the privilege of being a part of. The entire band put more into the gig than any artist I have ever seen, and every song was one beautiful masterpiece after another.

i saw NMH on their final tour when they came to Ventura, California. Jeff walked right next to me during soundcheck and i got the chills. The Minders opened for them (i hadnt heard them before, but ive like them since). Jeff came out and played I Will Bury You in Time. The band took their places during the final verse and they went right into Holland, 1945. i was right in front of the stage and it was so beautiful everyone was shouting lyrics and jumping up and down. when you described the set you saw and the audience singing like hymns, thats exactly how it was the ENTIRE set and it took me back to that night. i started to feel warm and tingly and almost cried.i recalled seein Julian bounce all over the stage from instrument to instrument and before the encore (playing the last few tracks of ITAOTS), julian said "You live in a beautiful place" with that childish and genuine softness. it was the most magical night of my life, and the day was just as cool. if any of you give a shit, ill tell you about the day leading to the concert, but my point is, the NMH fanbase (even the people who make a joke of it) are in LOVE with the music they make.

thank you for making this video! it brought me much joy!!!
    Jeff
played in my hometown in Texas back in 2013 and I was (still am) heartbroken because I was in the UK at the time!!! apparently the show was completely dead and not many people showed up but he played oh sister which is my favorite nmh song of all time and whenever I think about it I get sadder and sadder.
I was able to see nmh in Dallas but the seating was weird and I regret not being in the pit/ga area. I felt this strange tension with Jeff and camera phones and a person in the front actually lifted up their phone and took a picture of Jeff with the flash on!!! it was so embarrassing I for sure though he would say something but he seemed to not care in the least.
I also had tickets to see them in Tucson but I sold them and that's another thing I'll always regret since they'll possibly never tour again. I just hope Jeff does another few solo shows in the near future.

I saw him in Portland, Maine and it was on of the best nights of my life. I thought he would be shy and serious but once he warmed up he was acting a bit playful. People kept asking when he would put out a new album and he would just give them a confused look and laugh. It was so beautiful. Every song was perfect and nobody cared about which notes they could or couldn't hit. They just screamed every word. It's nice to know that people like Jeff actually exist and I'm SO thankful that they do!

I saw NMH in Kansas a few months ago, and holy shit I have never been to a better performance. It may be partly because they're my favorite band of all time, but they genuinely put on a great show. The best part for me was when they came back out and played Engine, exactly the way it happened at your show, after the break. This song is one of my all time favorites, and by this time I was half naked from jumping around so crazily and in tears, and I just can not imagine ever doing that at any other concert. I wish I could see them again and again and again. I hope they go on tour again!!

Just saw NMH performing for the first time, today in Portugal (NOS Primavera Sound). It was just fantastic. Very moving to finally see them. Jeff seems so humble

This is such an accurate representation of a Jeff Mangum show. I saw him a month ago when he was in Charleston and it was such a religious/spiritual experience. Loved it. Thanks for the video.

I went to the Cleveland show, it was amazing. The crowd was great during Jeff's performance. Everyone was singing and Jeff was loving it and he was great too. It was everything I could of hoped for, and then some. I am very glad I had the privilege to see Jeff Mangum live in concert and the show will be a memory that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

I saw Jeff live in Charlotte, NC. The most magical live music experience I've had. Everyone was there for Jeff and to support him. I also witnessed a lot of singing of the horns from the audience and people diving into the music and loving it. The setlist was a little different. He opened with Two-Headed Boy and played pt. 2 as the encore. So good. Even stood in the cold for over an hour to meet him and get my Aeroplane CD signed. Worth it.

I just picked up tickets to see NMH on May 27th here in Southern California and I am so excited. I've loved this record since I was 15 (8 years ago) and I never thought I'd have a chance to see this.

Nice Neu! LP! Love that album. Can't wait to see Mangum in AZ in late March! Saw him at Coachella, but the intimate setting is going to be unbeatable :)

He was really cool live. I saw him in Vancouver and the crowd was a little more reserved than what you describes but there was a similar gospel style experience, especially on king of carrot flowers part two. Really really glad I got to see him, one of the best concerts I've ever been to

I saw the show right before the one you went to in Providence, RI. People definitely lost attention when the Talls Firs, and The Music Tapes were playing. Julian came across as such a genuine person, and I managed to meet him afterwards, and he was incredibly nice. Jeff was very open right from the beginning of my show, and was talking to the crowd the whole night. I felt that magic you were talking about. Everyone at my show was singing along loudly, and very passionately.Overall a great show.

i saw him play at coachella last year. and it was one of the most beautiful shows ive ever been to. everyone was singing the whole time and when they started playing the fool i teared up. very few times ive felt like that at a show before

I saw Jeff in Cleveland, he played the same songs. I've been to a good deal of concerts but this was maybe the most incredible. I was in the front row and nearly all of the audience was singing the whole time. He seemed sad at first but that changed really quickly. You don't often get the chance to see your musical idols live, especially a notable recluse like Mangum. It was a surreal and perfect experience. I hope this tour is going to be a big comeback for him.

i can't believe this was 5 years ago already, shit. i went to this lil show too! i honestly think i vaguely remember seeing you there while waiting to get into union station. smaaaaall world man. honestly, what a subtle but fantastic performance from jeff mangum. and i agree with you, even tough it was an acoustic set, it felt like you were at a neutral milk hotel show, like the full band was there.

Anthony I saw him in Mass and I have to say I am so happy you reviewed this. It was one of the most amazing things I have experienced. Also at the show he made a slight hint that some unheard material exists, but also that we will probably never hear them:(

(Last post) The Music Tapes are special in their own right. Koster and company played twice at my home... one time while my dad was still here. When they returned, it was magical to hear them speak about him. I nearly cried when they talked to me and my mom about my dad and stuff he had said to them that I had forgotten.
Every time I see them, they come and hug me and ask about my family. Such genuine and magical souls, these people are. Great music. Wonderful people.

Listen to it again. I don't mean "You must have missed the greatness, so go back and find it", I mean that most of NMH's biggest fans-the ones who cried and screamed during the show Anthony was at, for instance-hated Aeroplane on first listen. It's an album that can grow on you literally beyond belief.
Also, once you get used to it, Jeff's voice becomes one of the best parts of the album: fighting his vocal limitations in order to sing his songs makes endearing, but also amazingly passionate.
