By giving over his weapon, Reinhardt signed over to the old warrior code - protect those who cannot protect themselves. It was an honourable (albeit dangerous) move to stand in harms way to save others knowing that you yourself cannot fight back.
This is a really harsh reminder, rewatching this so many years later, that the Blizzard that used to create premium, industry leading content, the one we once knew and loved is dead and buried.
Reinhardt in this cinematic: protects team against 10 bastions Reinhardt in the game after facing one bastion for 4 seconds: The shield won't hold forever !
Well if you look at the cinematics, no one is as strong as they actually are in the game. They have to balance it. Like in the short, he one shots a bastion. In D.Va’s short, she shreds some robots in seconds, while in the game her bullets are like nerf darts. It’s for balancing in game
Imagine how terrifying it would be to see a Reinhardt with that type of movement speed, two huge hammers, and with an Ana ulti running straight at you.
Ewan Keddie And then he wakes up because people were firing at him. Then the Ana is toxic and asks why they woke up the character that literally everyone was already attacking.
Now I understand Flash. You play the fool to mask a warriors pain. I dont know about all that Orion. The bad guys lost, and nobody got hurt. You know what we call that where I'm from: a pretty good day. Always remember Flash Day.
I return to this video as OW1 comes to a close. 428 hrs played as Rein. Many memories of duo tanking. Onto the next adventure with OW2. To my fellow tank mains who are about to be solo tanking. It’s been an honor tanking with you. I’ll see you on the battlefield.
yep bro and the " I have been called, i must answer" for a Rein main who stop playing almost 2 years ago... I feel it, I take my hammer and come back to the battlefield.
yesterday in a qp match, my tanks were like "let's play rein zarya one more time, by tomorrow I'll be on the other side" and it hits hard man. I'm a support main, the little time I spent playing tank was for mastering the coordination between zarya and rein, the timing of the shield, or how to dance with enemy rein. When you get a good teammate and it worked, it felt absolutely amazing. I guess for me ow2 really is a new game now.
@@escanor3945 i was so happy as a doom main finding out they made it only one tank and 5 man teams i came back after 2 years…then i saw what they did to doom
I like how Reinhardt's character arc in this vid is basically him learning how to play as Reinhardt, becoming less of a glory hound and more of a defensive team player.
As a rein main, charging is acceptable if your team is already scattered and a key enemy char is right in your sights, i.e. healer or bastion (or any enemy that is about to ult)
In game: Goofy characters who talk too much. In cinematic: Depressed war veterans. EDIT: When I'm talking about in game, I mean like when they're actually fighting. Brazil gets invaded, and you get quips like "Nice vacation spot!" I understand appearing aloof in certain situations, but they're aloof like 90% of the time. Like they're on some family picnic. Imagine if Reindhardt starts making a number of jokes while protecting his unit from bullets.
One of the coolest things about this cinematic is the moment he hands over his hammer. He isn't just giving Balderich a cooler battle or a better fighting chance, he's giving up his desire to fight. He used it as a way to nonverbally tell Balderich that he would do everything to protect his team while Balderich was gone. He left himself with nothing but his shield to prove it.
not just that but his desire for vengeance. he’s only going back to his team with his shield and armor. he’s putting his pride aside to keep his team alive
The moments you can see Reinhardt immediately coming to terms with "You're dying. You're going to die, and it's because of me. It's *my* fault." It hurts my heart man. ;_;
This is why I play rein people think its all about shield control but in reality its about knowing when to cover for your idiot dps and healer constantly throwing themselves into fire
yeah i remember watching this back when it came out and wanting to get overwatch but never having a good enough computer but now with one that works for it and overwatch 2 being here i will live with honor and die with glory
In one of the earliest OW shorts, i think i remembered seeing Reinhardt protecting omnic civilians from being assaulted by their human counterparts. That particular scene hit me pretty hard, the man who fights robots and loses his comrade by robots all his life; still holding his code of honour and justice by protecting the weak and the unwanted even though he is protecting the race that took everything from him One of the best written character so far
Well, i dont compare Rein story to another game characters though, i compare him to the rest of OW characters, while most of them is not that interesting, given their shorts lore is not published yet, i find for a mulitplayer game, OW characaters is written well enough to be both game fitted and generally character fit for a story.
how are they not well written? they fit into the lore perfectly. sure they fit the common superhero trope; tragedy, loss, a new found source of power...but I feel as if Blizzard has done an amazing job of creating these characters and keeping them uniform with the lore of overwatch. I also challenge you to create a universe consisting of 26 main characters, complete with ages of history, comics, an accessible line of support and community feedback and still deliver high quality content like this. In 2 years. I really hope you can elaborate on why you think they are written poorly, and I'd love to see a comparison of a well written character by your standards in a multiplayer fps. won't be able to sleep tonight if you don't. cmon bby
suqmahdeeeock yeah I like how they kind of captivate play Styles in the animated shorts. This is Ryan Hart before he pissed off enough Mercies to figure out when not to charge!
They should add a little Easter egg voice line, when you're defending or attacking Eichenwalde and you have a Reinhardt on your team the moment you're in the last room he says "Live with honor,.. die with glory"
This is the short that got me into the game, this whole character is the sole reasons i play overwatch. I hate to see them destroy the game as time goes on.
4:34 The exact moment Reinhardt realised the cost of his vanity and pride. He wouldn't seek glory by simply marching headfirst into battle, he would EARN his glory and legacy by "being their shield". Being the honourable protector where others would not, and dying with glory when his time would come.
When it cuts back to the current time of his body still being there. That hits hard, a constant reminder of the consequences for not protecting your teammate. Your closest friends.
Everything about this game is so deep. Something so small can mean so much and it’s constantly evolving. We don’t know everyone’s backstories yet. Truly Blizzard has made a masterpiece and done it a different way.
every year i just have to come back to this masterpiece, i may not be playing as much games as i used to but this animation really stuck with me and it always gives me chills, even hour long movies couldnt move me as much as this cinematic did, just brilliant!
The last moment when he hands him the coin and says "Live with honor" it is that moment honor truly awakens in Reinhardt and when he replied "Die......with glory" that is when the last of his desire for glory died, when he handed his hammer over to him. It truly is a beautiful life changing moment.
What are you talking about? Reinhardt has always lived with honor he was just very arrogant, and he still yearns for glory he just won’t sacrifice his team for it. You make it seem like honor and glory are absolute and have no gray area when he has always been an honorable guy and will always fight to die with glory
thats what everyone else wants, i want this line for every other hero "Dammit reinhardt!" You know... for all the times my team's reinhardt flies into the enemy leaving us without a shield... just saying
The funny thing is people complained that Blizzard was peer pressuring them to play the way they wanted them to and said they stopped playing because of it. Good riddance, no one will miss them. Just like no one misses the people who apparently stopped playing because Terry Crews isn't voicing Doomfist
To be honest, a good reinhardt plays agressively a decent chunk of the time. A good reinhardt just knows how to balance playing agressive with protecting the team. Just standing there with your shield in the choke isn't doing anything, advancing the fight towards/with the objective is your goal as a tank, and sometimes going in agressive with a FUCKITCHARGE is just the way to reach that goal.

i feel u on that my friend. The transition between past and present of the leader dead on the throne strikes my soul with goosebumps everytime i watch it. Incredible stuff!
All I can think about is Reinhardt walking, dead silent and in flashback mode to the castle. While Birgitte follows him, visualy confused and asking him what he is doing.
I think the Bastion series of omnics still had some semblance of emotion, even during the omnic crisis. At 2:17, if you pause at the right moment, you will see the Bastion shield itself using its arms (something none of the other Bastions did, as this one’s movements were far too human compared to the others), and the one next to it looks at its friend, then Reinhardt. Neat.
funny but not really accurate. since s4 and the popularity of the dive comp rein mains were so frustrated with dps mains running past them they were forced to main dva or Winston instead. rip deathballs
Doctor Jay But he’s not exactly brittle, and his armor covers him completely. I don’t think arrows, darts, and music can get threw that armor of his. Plus who in history of our species has died from ear bleeds?
I'm kinda mad about how they didn't give Brig an extra line of dialogue like "I'm going with you" for this short tbh. But, everybody needs a Brigitte on their team to back up their Reinhardts.
Interesting how at first Rein is having so much fun, and says the mantra like a slogan, but then when Balderich is dying he realizes what it actually means. Great touch.
That coin, the flash back alone at the blink of an eye. Killed my heart right off the bat. ~To clarify.~ I remember when I was little my Grandpa use to hold a dog tag in his palm and let the chain dangle while he just stared at it while we sat outside. He use to mumble his partners name before gripping the tag. ~Gone but not forgotten.
I swear to god younger Reinhard is literally how most Reinhards play, they rush into battle, totally disregarding their team, and then die immediately.
We need something like a full out series. The Blizzard wiki has all this information about the characters and their backstories, why not dig deeper into the world and bring the history to life? The shorts are one thing, they focus on individual characters, but what about Overwatch as a whole? I know the game starts after the fall of Overwatch and reading the backstories, the events that led up to it, what I want to see is it actually playing out on screen.
A story mode? Please? That would allow us to explore backstories and the current story they're trying to tell while we interact with them by playing as them. It would give beginners an ability to learn characters and their abilities by giving them character specific missions. I gotta tell you, when my friends were first telling me about overwatch I was incredibly excited... until I heard it was only pvp. Don't get me wrong, it's fine. But I was disappointed and a little angry when I realized there was no story mode or anything like that. Like, JUST pvp? Really?
A story mode would be interesting, thought it'd be difficult to arrange the use of most of the characters throughout the campaign. However, the game Transformers: Fall of Cybertron does this flawlessly, switching between both factions while maintaining continuity.
Ish Alvarez why not make it so you can do each character separately instead of switching between each of them while time goes? That way you could experience things from both sides.
I love the line "live with honor, die with glory" in this. Even 4 years on it's so powerful, because it's at the end that Reinhardt realized the true meaning of the words. It's not live for glory, die honorably; it's live with honor and duty, and when your time comes, face it, having lived your life till the very end.
This is why it’s so emotional when he says it while leaving Balderich behind him, because for the first time he pronounces that sentence AND understands really what values stands behind it. Gives chills because his master sacrifices himself, but dies knowing that Reinhardt turned from a fighter to a hero. Simply beautiful.
In the span of a 7 minute or so video. He seemed to age 10 years. From the young man who felt invincible and would always go ahead, to the man he is now... Again I am reminded how well these animations are made.
The video is a response to Winston's recall that was one of the first Overwatch animations. Reinhardt's flashback remembers the events of the Omnic Crisis and his first call to Overwatch (the coin that he inherited from fellow Crusader Balderich). Official lore information is inconsistent, but the Omnic Crisis happened around 25 years before the events of the game that follow the recall.
To this day, this is one of the very few pieces of media to ever bring me to tears. One of the greatest videos I’ve ever watched. I’ll never forget it.
One interesting thing I've come to realize is that it isn't just Balderich's death that haunts Reinhardt; it's *his team's* . See, until I watched it for the fourth or fifth time, I didn't really process that we see the same group of soldiers that Reinhardt abandoned slowly getting picked off by the bastion turrets. Reinhardt *should* have been there, and *should* have been their shield, but he wasn't, not until he could only save TWO of them. So when the last Crusader says "I have been called... I will answer. Always," he's remembering the times that he didn't really answer and others payed the price. He probably blames himself for the entire fall of Eichenwalde. I just think that detail makes it all the more meaningful when we see how he behaves.
Martin Dovah I have to disagree, when the Crusaders are called into action, Balderich tells each crusader to stay with their partners. Then Reinhardt looks at only two soldiers that shake their heads (because they know that Reinhardt will abandon them as usual). It is possible that he did have a larger team in the beginning, and being reckless, his team was thinned down to just two members and the fact that only two members of his team survive haunts him. Good observations though, props to you.
You seem to have an eye for details, so I have a question - the female Crusader at the start, does she get stomped by an OR-14 or is she heading back to the rally point? Because she appears to get jumped on, but in the next few seconds it shows 2 Crusaders with shields up, one of them being Baldich obviously, but the other isnt Rein, so is it her? Not sure myself and I need to know this.
it always gives me chills when Rein says "I am your shield" in game solely because he was told to "be their shield"

Reinhardt in this cinematic: protects team against 10 bastions
Reinhardt in the game after facing one bastion for 4 seconds: The shield won't hold forever !
Playing reinhardt I'm comp is like have a duck for a shield against bastion
Well it didn’t last much longer here, he just used his body as a shield when it failed.
@@Stormkrow280 And it was in slow motion, I think his shield just lasted 1 second
5:50 is more accurate if you remove slow mo,
The one you saw was Balderich who was probably stronger than reinhardt
Well if you look at the cinematics, no one is as strong as they actually are in the game. They have to balance it. Like in the short, he one shots a bastion. In D.Va’s short, she shreds some robots in seconds, while in the game her bullets are like nerf darts. It’s for balancing in game
Imagine how terrifying it would be to see a Reinhardt with that type of movement speed, two huge hammers, and with an Ana ulti running straight at you.
Osama Al Haid and then Ana just sleeps him 😂
Ewan Keddie
And then he wakes up because people were firing at him. Then the Ana is toxic and asks why they woke up the character that literally everyone was already attacking.
@@ICouldntThinkOk *and then tracer wakes him up from like a kilometer
until he gets slept, stunned, bobbed, naded, and booped off the map all at the same time.

Now I understand Flash. You play the fool to mask a warriors pain.
I dont know about all that Orion. The bad guys lost, and nobody got hurt. You know what we call that where I'm from: a pretty good day.

I return to this video as OW1 comes to a close. 428 hrs played as Rein. Many memories of duo tanking. Onto the next adventure with OW2. To my fellow tank mains who are about to be solo tanking. It’s been an honor tanking with you. I’ll see you on the battlefield.
I am dps main and hurt so much now only 1 tank per team . Let’s see how it goes I am going to miss that 6v6
It has been an honour
yep bro and the " I have been called, i must answer" for a Rein main who stop playing almost 2 years ago...

I like how Reinhardt's character arc in this vid is basically him learning how to play as Reinhardt, becoming less of a glory hound and more of a defensive team player.
Tell that to the idiot on our team that's charging into the enemy group
gunther mizuki he needs his teacher to die for him
As a rein main, charging is acceptable if your team is already scattered and a key enemy char is right in your sights, i.e. healer or bastion (or any enemy that is about to ult)
lol, whenever I play there's always a rein on the enemy team who just charges straight into every one and dies.

In game: Goofy characters who talk too much.
In cinematic: Depressed war veterans.

I understand appearing aloof in certain situations, but they're aloof like 90% of the time. Like they're on some family picnic. Imagine if Reindhardt starts making a number of jokes while protecting his unit from bullets.

It’s comments like these that make me want to play the new one
One of the coolest things about this cinematic is the moment he hands over his hammer. He isn't just giving Balderich a cooler battle or a better fighting chance, he's giving up his desire to fight. He used it as a way to nonverbally tell Balderich that he would do everything to protect his team while Balderich was gone. He left himself with nothing but his shield to prove it.
Show, don't tell.
This scene proves the concept.
not just that but his desire for vengeance. he’s only going back to his team with his shield and armor. he’s putting his pride aside to keep his team alive
The moments you can see Reinhardt immediately coming to terms with "You're dying. You're going to die, and it's because of me. It's *my* fault." It hurts my heart man. ;_;

One day, Reinhardt will be buffed back to relevance.
When that day comes... We will no longer just die with glory... But live with honour once more.
In one of the earliest OW shorts, i think i remembered seeing Reinhardt protecting omnic civilians from being assaulted by their human counterparts.
That particular scene hit me pretty hard, the man who fights robots and loses his comrade by robots all his life; still holding his code of honour and justice by protecting the weak and the unwanted even though he is protecting the race that took everything from him
One of the best written character so far
most of if not all of the characters in this game are not written well lets not get too crazy
Well, i dont compare Rein story to another game characters though, i compare him to the rest of OW characters, while most of them is not that interesting, given their shorts lore is not published yet, i find for a mulitplayer game, OW characaters is written well enough to be both game fitted and generally character fit for a story.
Svhons don't mind him they are written pretty well for a multiplayer fps
how are they not well written? they fit into the lore perfectly. sure they fit the common superhero trope; tragedy, loss, a new found source of power...but I feel as if Blizzard has done an amazing job of creating these characters and keeping them uniform with the lore of overwatch.
I also challenge you to create a universe consisting of 26 main characters, complete with ages of history, comics, an accessible line of support and community feedback and still deliver high quality content like this. In 2 years.
I really hope you can elaborate on why you think they are written poorly, and I'd love to see a comparison of a well written character by your standards in a multiplayer fps. won't be able to sleep tonight if you don't. cmon bby

The last moment when he hands him the coin and says "Live with honor" it is that moment honor truly awakens in Reinhardt and when he replied "Die......with glory" that is when the last of his desire for glory died, when he handed his hammer over to him. It truly is a beautiful life changing moment.

I'm seriously thinking that the only reason this was made is to teach aggressive Reinhardt players how to use him properly.

Ok we all need an Overwatch movie.
Even if it’s like a web movie or direct to dvd, I would be satisfied no matter what.
Myles Hoglund with the games voice actors playing their character in said movie

Good observations though, props to you.
why would you make my heart even sadder
Anna Banana I'm so sorry!
Not sure myself and I need to know this.
luke talbot I can only assume it's her; the armor looks consistent enough. As to her fate, I have no idea. I'll watch it again and take a closer look.
This is the most beautiful trailer thank you blizzard for bringing us my favorite character ever
Real talk? Reinhardt is one of my favorite game characters ever.
I think you never played a story game
Arda Sahin yeah lol. Reinhardt is a fine archetypal character but he doesn’t get close to the depth of characters in other games.
@Ali Hadi Babar I respect his opinion but I just think he never expirienced a true story game character and that btw is called Criticism
@@ArdaSReal which other games & characters would you recommend?
I would say it's amazing how much character depth you get, and it is all under 10 minutes with all if these shorts
