Which is why Apple will never allow MacOS on the iPad. MacOS allows traditional software acquisition channels where Apple just provides the hardware and OS, possibly a licensed feature or API, , where IOS / iPadOS app store means Apple gets to steal a 30% cut of all app vendor revenue.
Ya'll are looking at this backwards. What's really going to happen is that Apple will eventually dump MacOS on the desktop / laptops and branch a desktop iPadOS which will then allow Apple to theive 30% of that software revenue as well.
Mark my words, Apple is determined to replicate their IOS app store model across every product line they have, finish walling off those gardens and ensure all software companies pay for the privilege of selling software, subscriptions or services to all Apple product users.

For years I would like to have the ability to do software development on the iPad as easily as I do on my Mac. There was a move towards it with Swift Playground having some of the capabilities of Xcode, but it just stalled and never matured to anything beyond playfulness. I still lack comprehensive editors and IDEs like Visual Studio Code and the JetBrains suite. I also think that some software development workflows lean a lot on switching between apps and having them side-by-side, which means that iPadOS needs to improve its multi-tasking capabilities to allow to do this more conveniently. I also use a lot of community tools which I think would mean that the barrier to create an app will need to be lowered for an iPad work-env to be as lively as a desktop one. I can't work without brew. This can either be sandboxed or managed system-wide somehow, but this needs to be solved. And I'm all for what you're saying with not having macOS on the iPad. It's just that iPadOS needs to improve to accommodate these very real requirements, or introduce software development workflow alternatives that solve the same basic needs. For instance the graphical flow editor of Unreal Engine can be amazing to work with on the iPad.

    • @Thewaterspirit57

@@Thewaterspirit57 you’re right, but there are still ways to facilitate this. They can sandbox the built app in a simulator and give the IDE a debug interface into it. It will not be perfect to begin with, but it’ll be a start they can iterate over.

@@jackedup447 Sure. Though it seems a bit strange to me that this intended market doesn't include developing apps for the iPad itself, when they offer an M2 processor in a 13 inch tablet with a keyboard dock that surely could be perfectly suitable for that if they let you do it.
And then for the most part I can use Windows, macOS, or Linux for any professional or non-professional purpose. So the iPad is artificially limited and only suitable for certain things, it doesn't really make sense to talk about it as a replacement or alternative to a real computer in any general sense. Even if it's a useful tool for certain things.
But it also *could* be suitable for all of this. If the keyboard dock works well enough the 13 inch iPad pro could be a totally fine Laptop replacement with an unrestricted OS. Presumably the M2 chip should be able to drive dual external monitors (not sure if the iPad allows this currently) so it could be docked and work as a desktop. And performance should be good enough for most things. But Apple doesn't let you do that. Probably to ensure they can keep making revenue from the app store and in-app purchases more than any philosophical or design concern. So the iPad doesn't seem particularly useful to me personal, even though it *could* be if Apple *let* it be.

It doesn't have to be macOS but that would be ideal as there is so much already available for macOS. Or for a tablet, to be able to do that or run the UI on the tablet screen and connecting a bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Unfortunately, we all know the main reason they haven't done this is likely because they want to pressure people to have to buy more of their hardware. Their laptop and desktop sales would likely decline if people could run a desktop OS off their phones and tablets. It just really sucks that they may avoid doing this for as long as possible.

The iPad Pro needs to ship with three storage drives. A drive dedicated to iPadOS (32GB should be sufficient), a drive dedicated to macOS (32GB might be fine but let's give it 64GB to be safe), and a shared data drive (this would be the capacity you choose when buying the device, the other two cannot be accessed by the end user).
Now if you want to use the iPad as an iPad you do your normal stuff. If you need Mac functionality you restart into macOS and get full Mac capability. If you want to return to the iPad interface you restart into that mode. The dedicated storage drives for iPadOS and macOS would not be user accessable without terminal commands to unlock access, they would only be there for the system so there is always free space to be able to download and install an update to the OS and to prevent the device from being unable to boot up because of a completely full storage drive, something that happens more frequently with iPhones but I wouldn't be surprised if iPads and Macs have the same issue from time to time.

I don't see why Apple doesn't implement something similar to the SteamDeck. You can have it in 'gaming' mode and 'desktop' mode by pushing a button in the power menu. iPad could easily toggle between what it is now, and a MacOS environment couldn't it? Also, I've recently been using my 11" 2018 iPad Pro in Sidecar and have even set it up as my primary monitor a few times. The screen resolution is certainly sharp enough to be used as an 11" macbook display. The only difficulty was using programs like Adobe Illustrator where I have a large amount of toolbars open on the right hand side of the screen. Otherwise, it was more than sufficient and obviously a fair trade-off for portability.

Like he brought up file management which has been kinda improved and I like that you have access to your different cloud storage solutions. I would also like to see iPadOS treat video out differently. 90% of the time, it mirrors the screen the same way you mirror a screen on airplay. It’s full of compression, there’s some slight delay which makes it kinda nauseating if you want to hook it up to a big screen to work on a Google doc which is already painful enough on the iPad, or play some games. I don’t need a full desktop mode but maybe don’t leave it to app developers to support external display to make use of the video out capability of the very expensive tablet I just bought

On Windows I used the touchscreen all the time whether I was making demos or promotional material (videos, photos, flyers, etc.), creating music in my spare time or using Notion.

I don't want Mac OS on iPad for the exact same reason why I ditched my Surface for an iPad Pro. Operating Systems that are designed primarily for mouse and keyboard use are fundamentally incompatible with touch controls.
I loved my Surface. It did everything I wanted it to do. But as a tablet, for watching videos, playing games, checking your email, the touch interface really sucks on Windows. It was much more complicated than it needed to be. And worse, as a laptop, it still was underperforming due to the small screen and wonky keyboard implementation.
The iPad is no different. Trying to use it as a laptop always results in frustration because it is fundamentally a device designed to be easy and quick.
And that is why I bought one. I can do anything I need to do in a computing system, in a manner that is quick and easy. But when I need to do work like CAD and music production, I would never want to even try to do it in an iPad.
In my opinion, what would be a very cool implementation is if the iPad could function as a Mac Mini. Using iPad OS for everyday tablet computing, and then getting to your office and plugging it into a thunderbolt hub, rebooting the iPad into Mac OS and getting to work.

Examples being file sharing, the webcam shutting off if I move to another application, the awkwardness of trying to upload or download content to and from the device.

Admittedly it's gotten a LOT better but still feels like there's too much hand holding for what amounts to a Pro device that can cost as much as a new Macbook Pro when kitted out. When they initially said Stage Manager and External Display support would be limited to the M series chips it made me slightly optimistic that they might start developing a "Pro" version of iPadOS strictly limited for the Pro models. I think Samsung's Dex would be a fantastic model to follow if this is where they choose to go for it in the future. Restricting a more mature desktop experience to docked would be a very fair compromise.

Full discloser, I don't own either a mac or an iPad, but from this, I got the idea, that maybe a swicher could be implemented between maOS, and iPadOS. Sort of like, how windows 10 has/had a switch between tablet and desktop mode. Now, I'm not saying it was perfect or anything. But the idea of being able to switch between desktop and tablet could come in handy. Like, for most of the time, you'd use tablet mode, when you need to use desktop features, you'd just switch to desktop mode, where you basically use macOS. Or something like that. It might be patented or not, but in case it is, you can just dual-boot the 2 operating system, and maybe "seemlesly" switch between the two, by running one, and having the other in sleep, and when you want to switch between the two, you reverse which one is running and which one is in sleep. But idk, I'm not an expert by any means, and I think it shows, but idk, maybe this could work

Your point is predicated on the assumption that putting MacOS on the iPad would require exhaustively eliminating iPad-specific features, while I don't think that's true. There's no reason that Apple couldn't expose developer APIs for the specific human interfaces that the iPad has; they already do this for touchpad gestures on MacBooks and the similar-but-different gestures on the Magic Mouse.

So if I need to edit an smart object I need to go to Affinity Photo first, edit it and go back to Photoshop, only to find out my layers have been flattened. Also Photoshop is missing most layer effects and it's infuriating, that's been in Photoshop since I can remember!

I'm an M1 iPad Pro user and I use it for video editing in Luma Fusion. The only big issue I have with iPad OS is lack of options and granularity for backups. It only supports backing up to iCloud, and does not support excluding certain folders from the backup. I can either back up all my huge transient video editing files to an expensive iCloud storage Subscription, or I can't backup ANY files. The fact that the files app backup is all or nothing, and the fact there is no "time machine" to back up to local storage, is a major pain.

The real wonder about DaVnci Resolve on iPad is how much BlackMagic Design has done with all the restrictions Apple places through this approach. I had my 11 inch Ipad Pro M1 connected via a USB C hub to a FocusRite Scarlett 212, a hard drive, and an external monitor. Took me about half a day to get used to using the pencil as my primary tool for editing but by that point I was actually enjoying the process. I cut a video, corrected sound and even managed color grades with that set up, inside 4 hours?
I will say Johnathan's needs are slightly more complicated than most: For quick edits and shiz, basic assemblies, I can see this working well for editors like me, especially when mostly working with 1080 and 4k content, in MOV and MPEG formats. In those cases, it's close to miraculous.

If we just had support for side-loaded apps we could have emulators for other environments. This would make iPads amazing.

iPad should just quick-boot to MacOS when you connect a keyboard and then have shared storage, shared settings, and some Handoff features. Then you'd get a bonus touchscreen and Pencil input when using MacOS. Disconnect the keyboard and it would go right back to being an iPad and save the MacOS state for when you reconnect the keyboard. They would slowly merge the two operating systems over time (like they're already doing) to make them one seamless OS but quick switching between iPadOS and MacOS is the way to go for the time being.

I feel the color grading booth use case only really highlighted that macOS could benefit from a touchscreen. Especially when considering everything else around video editing.
As an iPad mini user, I’m not sure macOS belongs on the iPad. At the very least, it doesn’t belong on the mini. It probably doesn’t belong on the base iPad. I can definitely see the argument, though, of bringing macOS to the M1/M2 iPads. For me, though, I’ve been considering getting an iPad Air with one of the new chips and I think I would prefer iPadOS. But I do agree that it needs a LOT more work to make it a more “professional” grade environment.

Would honestly recommend trying Mac OS on a Cintiq tablet before assuming it wouldn’t work on an iPad.
I’ve been waiting for years for apple to finally merge Mac OS onto the iPad. I have some hope with the new 14” pro model but I’m not going to hold my breath. For complex tasks, you need good tools and the iPad just doesn’t have it yet. The software sucks, especially for creatives (notable exception being procreate) because they keep neutering the desktop version of creative software. It means I have to use both a Mac and an iPad at the same time to do really deep work and that is annoying.
My advice for people begging for this, who work primarily at one work station, get a Cintiq and connect it to your mac. Now apple can continue these stupid games and I’m not nearly as mad about it.

It's simply not made for macos (or rather macos for it) just the way steve jobs described how touchscreen on a macbook would be stupid. Because besides entertainment, the iPad is the handheld thing for touching drawing etc while the mac is the device that has mouse input as standart and is supposed to be a device where you dnt interact with the screen - this may seem unimportant to some but it there's obviously a reason for the sizes and ways of ipadOS - it's made for touching it without further effort and so using macos on the iPad or merging ipadOS and macOS more and more is a rather 'unthoughtful' idea. The only solution would be to have both ipadOS and macOS run on the ipad like with boot camp - or only give the option to use macOS-type-UI to developers who develop software that is explicitely made for mouse and keyboard. But obviously some of these, like editing software, can also be changed to a touch ui so it lies with the developer in the end, of course. But I hope Apple does not listen to those who want mac and ipad be the same because while you often can't find too many differences, when you think about it there's a whole lot, not just the explicit but also the 'interaction-philosopical' stuff. That's (part of) what i think about it.

I don't know if this necessarily will add to the argument for the iPad to stay as an iPad but here goes. I think the trouble with the iPads, and probably tablets in general is that they try to be too many things at once. The laptop is designed to replace the desktop, smartphones are designed to replace the telephone, so I think the best thing for the iPad is that it needs to find something that only it could do very well, and I think that lies with media consumption. It's great for watching videos and movies on the go, playing some games, and reading books. It already has apple's M processors that are capable enough to run games like resident evil village (albeit not in its most detailed setting), so I think having it as a gaming machine that could also do some light productive work would be stellar. Another thing would be that iPad is a great substitute for a book in general. Anything that you can do on a book can be done on the iPad, like taking notes and drawing (on a professional level even). The pencil makes the digital arts use case for the iPad really a compelling point to consider.
I think the thing is that just because the iPad has computer-level hardware, people expect it to become a computer. When the tablet form factor came out I don't think anyone was expecting it to do any desktop-grade workloads on a portable slab like the iPad, people use it for better consumption of media by simply being a portable larger screen. I think that's the key, being a relatively large screen that you can bring anywhere, and that's why I think it's important that the iPad remains as an i-PAD. It shouldn't lose its main appeal.

  • @tngdwn8350
    @tngdwn8350 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yes, there might be an app on the iPad which fits your use-case, but for many of us that's not the case.
I'm not saying just put MacOS on the iPad and call it a day, but the iPad is clearly powerful enough to have Macbook capabilities and they advertise it as a "pro" tool, but treat it as a multimedia toy. So give it a proper desktop mode, where, when connected to a keyboard and possibly an external monitor, you can utilize the iPad like a proper PC (the stage manager is a step in the right direction, but not enough).
Just as important would be a free app ecosystem. Make it possible to sideload (maybe hide a setting to allow sideloading to "protect" your precious infant...users), make it easy to port apps from Mac to iPad and don't just cherry pick some apps to shut up a part of the userbase.
When I went to university, I used my iPad to take notes, but as soon as I had to write a couple lines of code or edit a project I had to take my four times heavier laptop with me, which has half the power of the iPad, and why? Because Apple thinks we are all infants. (There are workarounds which are okay-ish, but none include having a proper code editor or IDE directly on your iPad as well as a compiler).
It's not like we want the iPad to become a Mac, but we want the option to use it like a Mac, if we choose so. Proper desktop mode and app ecosystem.
