iPadOS finally getting all the features you'd expect from a desktop OS is infinitely more likely than Apple putting MacOS on an iPad (and probably a better idea because touch and mouse have different needs)
Regarding your sound issue, I’ve been doing this for a few years… jumpdesktop works great and I get audio. I can edit in FCP and everything, and as long as my internet connection is solid i get near flawless playback.

Congratulations! You’ve just invented MacBook 12! I’m still using one for sole purpose - screen sharing into my more powerful macs. It’s lighter than iPad with keyboard and more convenient in many ways (Cmd - Tab is translated into target host)
People never seem to discuss the two elephants in the room - battery life and security model. I suspect the battery life by transplanting macOS on iPad would be pretty bad - iPadOS and iOS is super aggressive on pausing/terminating apps, which is not how macOS manages the processes. 13-inch MacBook Air has a significantly bigger battery than the 13-inch iPad Pro, and for a good reason. I agree the Files app is in an abysmal state, and 'pro' apps on iPads aren't great, as well as how iPadOS doesn't let you manage long running task, but I suspect the solution isn't as simple as just transplanting macOS. There has been attempts to have 2-in-1 OS, like Windows 8. And when it comes to Windows 2-in-1 devices they aren't doing amazing, and previous attempt of Windows+Android 2-in1 was cludgy at best. Desktop and Tablet experience is hard to merge.
thank you. when (and if) Apple ever does this, they are going to do it right - they've never been in the business of providing a clunky user experience. iOS (and iPadOS) will always be the sandbox to "think different" as to how an OS operates & more fundamentally carry the inquiry of "what is a computer?" it'll happen but probably not in ways we think it will :)
I love the whole idea behind this video, but as I was watching, I kept wondering: what happened to that MacBook Air you previously fell in love with? Where does it fit in all of this?

I have a Macbook Pro 16 inch too. I've vercro'd a 2TB SSD to the lid, so now I have 3TB. It's not enough. So, I thought I'd remote in to it from a lighter device. I thought a 16inch m1 Macbook Air. I've got a Raspbery Pi 5 VNC remote going, it's OK but it lags enough to be irritating. I don't play games so that's not an issue. My plan now is to plumb loads of external drives to the MBP and run it remotely from anything. But, I won't get sound. I think you can't either. Anyone got any answers for this? Also, I'd love to access and run - lagless vis the internet. Now VNC is charging - far too much in my view for internet linking, I wonder if there is another way ! My kit is not new enough for sidecar use yet. Is it faster than VNC ? Why doesn't it have sound either??
What software you used for it? And how is the config to access external? You should do a video about it. I tried to find in youtube several and several times. No one have a video explaining this configuration.
@SamuelNam would you please tell me which virtual desktop software did you use for this setup please!!! Thank you so much for such a great video!!! No one else has made another video like this one! @@TheRenegade... when I found someone selling a MBP 16GB/1TB for $10 more than the best I could find on the mini it was a no-brainer: better resale value w lots of freebies for 0.4 lbs: backlit keyboard w touch ID, trackpad, camera, retina display, speakers/mic, longlife battery, runs off USB-C PD (not AC), & still has active cooling. now the device can play "double duty" docked or travel (esp if i decide to leave the iPadPro home)
I'm a long time windows user and you are literally blowing my mind right now and changing my opinion for all product. I might buy thapple if this feature comes irl especially the last sd card bit.
The surface pro already does the job for a tablet-laptop and does it better. People used to the apple ecosystem might prefer the ipad. As a long time windows user the surface pro should suit you.
Mac has a lot of hidden features that you might like. It works perfectly with your iPhone, iPad and AirPods. So if you have those, try Mac and you’ll not regret. But if you don’t have an iPhone or AirPods you can stick to windows cuz you’re used to it.
The first 45 seconds of this was enough for me to like this video, regardless of the other 12 minutes of it lol That heist scene was unnecessarily high effort and I enjoyed the f out of it
Both iPadOS and macOS are using the same base system files, all the iPad needs is the macOS user interface and the support for the apps. It would be a larger OS install, but wouldn’t need to be as big as running both on an iPad.
I’ve had a work Lenovo laptop since 2010 (X220 through to current Yoga X). Every time I use a MacBook I keep tapping the screen, then remember that they still don’t have a touch screen!
I have been asking for the *option* to run mac OS on iPad for years, but especially since the iPad and MacBook hardware converged. There's absolutely no reason to not allow users to install or dual boot iPad OS and mac OS on the M series iPads.
The ability to have your primary Apple Home Server that you connect every thing too and only grab the local interface like the iPad glass screen to see and work on content means we are so much closer to Apple Home being a thing. This would also be nice so each person can have their own profile not that is the way it will be at first but maybe down the road we can boot multi profiles on family sharing devices! Thank you so much for this video and its concept!
for whoever want to know, cast macos to ipad like the guy did. i tell you, you didn't want it. 1. latency. u might think that internet will solve the latency. it doesn't. 2. latency. 3. latency. 4. it's a macos. don't try to click or touch the icon. which u probably will cz you think that it's an ipad. 5. just get the surface pro 11.
Back when Parallels Access was a thing (before they killed a perfectly good product because they didn't want to develop it any more), I worked through my iPad to a shared Mac all the time, and got real work done. Keyboard worked fine, screen tapping for things I needed to click on. So it's possible and not even that hard. Now we need to find out what screen sharing program he was using. Jump Desktop is okay, but not as good as Parallels Access was.
watching videos, editing them, or playing games(playable if they don't require reaction) are probably no good, but typing isn't bad at all even if the connection isn't really strong, i.e. codes, documents, accessing files, etc. I used the Chrome remote desktop a couple times. The experience is not flawless but very usable, it definitely feels like typing on an old computer due to latency.
@@peterpayne2219you might have figured it out but he’s using Screen5. I used to use Parallels, also sad when they dumped it. Was going to try Jumpdesk but their website hasn’t been updated for years so not sure if I trust it. Let me know what you think of JumpDesk
I got the Surface Pro a couple of years ago wondering if an all-in-one would convert me. The hardware feels nice and seems like a good idea but the biggest problem (apart from loud fans on the Intel models) is that it's really only a tabletop 'laptop.' That kickstand is impossible to use on your lap. So now if I want to do tablet stuff I grab the iPad, if I want to do laptop stuff I grab the MacBook, and the SP mostly just gets plugged into a monitor if I need Windows.
I *still* use the original app in my iPadPro four years later - best 20 bucks I've ever spent. but I get it, $20 isnt exactly going to keep the lights on & they still provide free tech support when i need it. but I made sure to give them my beef that I'm not going to switch if the app continues to support my current use cases. they need to help their current userbase understand what they can do newly otherwise it occurs as a money grab (which im sure isn't their intention at heart as they have a great app!)
I’m an iPad pro M1 user and I only use my old iMac for Musescore. My perfect device wold be an ipad with both OS and choose which one depending on the use
5:30 - how to set this up (briefly) I honestly was so irritated by the "stolen iPad with macOS" from the very start, but luckily there is an explanation
This would be great for me integrating MAC OS with iPad applications for audio production…I you using the iPad in side car/universal mode ? How does it work ?
Hear me out: You can run iPadOS and iOS apps and widgets on MacOS, right? Just let iPad Pro users RUN certain MacOS apps on their iPads! No need to make all-in-one OS for them (though that's be nice), just let us run big boys apps on our beutiful tablets! That's all that needed.
Yes, all you need is the apps, not the interface, and a proper files organizer. They could make a few Mac os settings run in a Pro iPad os skin. Cant forget side loading.
Great video, the only reason I love jailbreak nowadays is because I can fully run a virtualized MacOS environment on my iPad Pro M series and it runs pretty well. It has been a game changer for working on the go for me.
I don't see why not! (just when I cancelled my order for a mini for a MBP this past week! I held out for 4 years thinking id never have to buy a laptop again...I tried!)
I think im going to go a mac mini so i can keep iOS development going and a surface or an iPad (depending on what they do with it) for on the go work, can always remote into the mac mini but the surface is right now a more practical device
I have an iPad Pro (M1) lying around and I’d love to try this. What solution are you using for the Remote Desktop capability of your Mac? Not being able to find one (and not really knowing where to look)drove me to buying another MacBook Air instead of a Mac mini tbh.
As someone who has only dipped their toes in Apple ecosystems through the years, this is THE issue for me. I would upgrade my 8th gen iPad for a new M iPad in a heartbeat if there was better file management, but I just won't give them more money until then.
that's the rub - his point that the iPad is the best tablet means it will continue to live in this alternative paradigm for as long as the market will bear. the second you allow macOS on the iPadPro, all the lines get blurred & developers no longer get to see what users experience purely in iPadOS and answer the question of "how do we move away from organizing data without files (aka Finder)?" Some genius will wake up w a light bulb one day! 💡
Dual boot? You mean I have to turn off my device to launch another OS? What if I wanna use my pencil? Seems like a hassle. I'd rather one OS that does everything. But that being said, I don't want to compromise macOS by including touch support.
I’d love MacOs on my M1 iPad Air! I love my iPad though, I don’t like many things from Apple but iPads are the best tablets and MacBooks are the best laptops, especially from longevity. I still have my late grandmothers 2010 i5 15inch MacBook Pro and it still works fine for normal internet usage and some other harder stuff, even some gaming. My MacBook Pro is a 2018 13 inch perfectly fine, doesn’t even feel old. In my reseller business I also used to sell a load of MacBooks and old MacBooks are still good! Sucks that a 2006 MacBook is more usable than my 2010 Mac Pro but apart from that Apple kills every other laptop, tablet manufacturer when it comes to longevity. Not gonna switch back to iPhone from my Galaxy Flip though, nor am I gonna switch from my home built gaming pc to an iMac or something either.
well said. I beat the hell out of my 2007 MacBook I bought in Thailand & it didn't die until 2020 which lo and behold is when I committed to go all in on iPadPro! not having to replace it meant some serious innovation could take place!
Yes my brother, tell ‘em. I been using my iPad Pro for years. I use it more than my phone. I needed to use adobe’s apps and they either don’t work on iPad, or they are horrible and buggy. I’ve been waiting for the oled iPad for years, and I’m in love with the new iPad but I didn’t like that they didn’t improve the battery life. I have the m1 iPad Pro and as a heavy user, I have to charge it every 2-3 hours! It runs out of battery so quickly and it takes forever to charge. I was very close to getting the new surface pro, but I just couldn’t. So, I got a MacBook Pro with m3 pro chip this week, and the difference is very noticeable. It charges faster, lasts longer, can handle heavy tasks, apps work better, texting is easier, and the fact that I can move the cursor from the MacBook’s screen to the iPad, then drag and drop files between two different devices so seamlessly makes me glad that I didn’t switch to surface pro. That would’ve been a huge downgrade and a big risk for my data and privacy. Comparing Apple to Microsoft is like comparing Bentley to Honda. No matter how hard Honda tries to copy Bentley, it will never be close. The services, the quality, the design, the warranty, the innovation, the user-experience is just something else.
this is music to my ears! I gave into ordering a MBP this past week after using an iPadPro as my daily driver for 4 years. I can't wait to experience what sounds like Sidecar!
MacOS on iPad would kill the Macbook sure, but it would also kill the entirety of Microsoft's Surface line, along with all the 2-in-1 ultrabooks from every other hardware manufacturer. I only use PC and I can recognize this
How’s Screens going? Just started looking into too since it looked clean and well made, minus the sound. Not sure why he didn’t mention what he’s using in the video, but could be Screens
whoever is buying the most expensive Ipads, is balls deep inside Apple Ecosystem and has a Macbook too. letting them have MACOS on the IPAD means lots of them won't bother buying the Macbook. Just have a subscription to use MACOS on ipad. $10 a month
I've used the surface for 3 years. The interchangeability is fun for a month. After that the form factor is getting annoying. Apple is doing right for keeping their OS where it belongs. But I do think you should be allowed to install MacOS programs on iPadOS. There's no reason not to.
Umm Tailscale with Screens and a Mac mini, running headless, hooked up to the router does this all the time. I use a tinykvm in case of a restart, and have Mac set to auto boot and FileVault enabled. Love my iPad/Mac setup.
Apple is a hardware company, it sells devices, that's where the main profit comes for them, that's what allows them not to sell user data in advertising market, as some others do. So it would be not exactly smart for them to blend 2 hardware categories into 1. Now what actually makes people prefer their devices - is the user experience, which is 90% in software: it has to be THAT good for us to choose their devices over a myriad of other options. That, in theory, would allow Apple to change their paradigm and switch to a software-profit company, and let us install their iOS, macOS etc. on a range of other devices, even from different manufacturers. Would you pay for iOS to have it on a Samsung? I think i would.

Desktop and Tablet experience is hard to merge.
thank you. when (and if) Apple ever does this, they are going to do it right - they've never been in the business of providing a clunky user experience.
iOS (and iPadOS) will always be the sandbox to "think different" as to how an OS operates & more fundamentally carry the inquiry of "what is a computer?"
it'll happen but probably not in ways we think it will :)
I love the whole idea behind this video, but as I was watching, I kept wondering: what happened to that MacBook Air you previously fell in love with? Where does it fit in all of this?
I ended up selling it since we needed cash to keep producing these videos and it was a luxury to have two macos devices.
@@thesamuelnam wow thats sad
@@thesamuelnam sorry I only got to reading your comment now. I feel a bit sad to read it.🥲 You really seemed to make great use of that MacBook for overseas work. Your "I travelled 9071km with Macbook Air M2 - Real use review" is still one of my favourite videos. Really inspiring how technology can enable you be portable to keep working everywhere, and also support a cause you care about while doing so. It's what nudged me to my own purchase of an M2 Air, even though I'm not really into Apple stuff in general. I believe it made my life easier and more productive.
I wasn't even that interested in the video but you have gained my like just through the intro alone, amazing stuff haha
This is an awesome video, thanks for putting it together. This has been a dream for me since I first started using my iPad years ago!
lol same here & after 4 years w my iPadPro, I threw in the flag & ordered a MacBookPro 😅
It’s not Chrome Remote Desktop, right?
@SamuelNam would you please tell me which virtual desktop software did you use for this setup please!!!
Thank you so much for such a great video!!!
No one else has made another video like this one! You could make a continuation video of this one by showing how you setup the virtual desktop software and explaining if you always leave your MacBook Pro on.
Samuel, thank you so much and have a great rest of the day.
I made a video about it: th-cam.com/video/xyjDmID_OXo/w-d-xo.html
oh man my back hurts, i doubled down on MacBook 12" retina or the iPad Mini 6 depending on what i'm doing. my huge heavy M1 MBA is basically my desktop computer and never leaves the house
funny u mention this - Ive been using my iPadPro as my daily driver for 4 years & gave in & ordered a M mini & switched it last minute to a MBP "just in case" - I couldn't hear the thought of my "desktop" being tethered!
Why not just use a Mac Mini or iMac at that point
@@TheRenegade... when I found someone selling a MBP 16GB/1TB for $10 more than the best I could find on the mini it was a no-brainer: better resale value w lots of freebies for 0.4 lbs: backlit keyboard w touch ID, trackpad, camera, retina display, speakers/mic, longlife battery, runs off USB-C PD (not AC), & still has active cooling. now the device can play "double duty" docked or travel (esp if i decide to leave the iPadPro home)
Man, I say it once again. You are MY FAVOURITE TECH GUY! How much effort you put into quality of your videos is awesome
@@firestormjupiter👍🏽
Mac has a lot of hidden features that you might like. It works perfectly with your iPhone, iPad and AirPods. So if you have those, try Mac and you’ll not regret. But if you don’t have an iPhone or AirPods you can stick to windows cuz you’re used to it.
@@firestormjupiter Problem with the SP11 is that it can’t be used in your lap
The first 45 seconds of this was enough for me to like this video, regardless of the other 12 minutes of it lol
That heist scene was unnecessarily high effort and I enjoyed the f out of it
That was a professional steal. Love your Videos♥
The intro is the best I ever seen on TH-cam
that guy could actually play Steve Jobs
Well, he would have to drop a few pounds.
Both iPadOS and macOS are using the same base system files, all the iPad needs is the macOS user interface and the support for the apps. It would be a larger OS install, but wouldn’t need to be as big as running both on an iPad.
would love to have macOS on the ipad, but until then I also connect it to my powerful pc remotely when im out of the house
I’ve had a work Lenovo laptop since 2010 (X220 through to current Yoga X). Every time I use a MacBook I keep tapping the screen, then remember that they still don’t have a touch screen!
i have this problem w my iPadPro docked - occasionally touching my 27" screen 😂
What software are you using to remote desktop connect to it?
“Screens 5”. Although there are other options too.
I love using DEX for remote desktop. Or anything lower powered to remote into a more powerful machine
Hey Sam, Say hi to Steve for us we miss this guy 💯
my favorite tech channel 💚
This is one of the best videos I've seen in a while 🤣
It’s hard to understand, but that is how innovation works. It’s is own thing, that is why it works
Your videos are super entertaining while still being informative. Bravo sir.🎉
is this just sidecar or vnc?
Honestly I don’t need MacOS on my iPad Pro. What I need is a cursor that is an arrow and a real finder app for the iPad and I would be happy to
And more app optimisation for tablets
Good god yes
Awesome video, please how did you setup the virtual desktop
Guys, that looks like screens 5 logo at 5:57 but we wait for Samuel's response
@@Erinle_createswhat’s screen 5
Very interesting... so... please tell us... which remote access platform are you using (I wanted to say how do you RDP into your Mac :) )
So now if I want to do tablet stuff I grab the iPad, if I want to do laptop stuff I grab the MacBook, and the SP mostly just gets plugged into a monitor if I need Windows.
this is an important data point!
Exactly, the SP11’s lack of “lapability” was the reason I returned mine
Did I miss what Remote Desktop software you are using?
Edovia Screens 5
@@DoctorAtomTNT oh yeah thanks. Used to love that app until it went subscription.
My perfect device wold be an ipad with both OS and choose which one depending on the use
bro this man deserves 100k subscribers!!
5:30 - how to set this up (briefly)
I honestly was so irritated by the "stolen iPad with macOS" from the very start, but luckily there is an explanation
This would be great for me integrating MAC OS with iPad applications for audio production…I you using the iPad in side car/universal mode ? How does it work ?
Hear me out:
You can run iPadOS and iOS apps and widgets on MacOS, right? Just let iPad Pro users RUN certain MacOS apps on their iPads! No need to make all-in-one OS for them (though that's be nice), just let us run big boys apps on our beutiful tablets! That's all that needed.
This is the solution we need!
Yes, all you need is the apps, not the interface, and a proper files organizer. They could make a few Mac os settings run in a Pro iPad os skin. Cant forget side loading.
@@MikeHightower1 multiple virtual workspaces too
Exactly all iPadOS is missing is Xcode nothing else
Also I don’t see why IPad can’t get m4 ultra
What's the name of "Steve Jobs" from the video? TH-cam is never recommending me his channel any more and I can't remember it.
Hey there! It's me, Daniel from Tech with Benefits!
Bravo! Great video is like watching a sitcom 😄
You are my new favorite tech youtuber ❤
Bro, never mind the iPad, your steering wheel is on the wrong side!
J/K. Interesting video. Wait until you hear about headless MacBooks.
Great video, the only reason I love jailbreak nowadays is because I can fully run a virtualized MacOS environment on my iPad Pro M series and it runs pretty well. It has been a game changer for working on the go for me.
Bro, how do I jailbreak mine??? Pls help
Just think about the gaming possibilities. World of warcraft on a tablet anyone?
What about doing this with a mac mini? Would the experience be the same for cheaper price? (especially new M4 on the way!)
I don't see why not! (just when I cancelled my order for a mini for a MBP this past week! I held out for 4 years thinking id never have to buy a laptop again...I tried!)
I have a an old Intel Mac mini sitting around with 8GB RAM, 1 TB SAD and 500GB HD. Would that remote software (Jump, Screens, etc.) run on it ok??
I like your video, but I downvote for not mention which app you use
I think im going to go a mac mini so i can keep iOS development going and a surface or an iPad (depending on what they do with it) for on the go work, can always remote into the mac mini but the surface is right now a more practical device
Intro is hilarious😂, really good👍🏻
I have an iPad Pro (M1) lying around and I’d love to try this. What solution are you using for the Remote Desktop capability of your Mac? Not being able to find one (and not really knowing where to look)drove me to buying another MacBook Air instead of a Mac mini tbh.
I'm so with you on that last point. We need better file management on IOS and iPad OS. The current files app feels so limited.
"Apple, stop being a dick!"
How do you get this to work?
remote desktop and a good internet connection
@@SaHaRaSquadYes, but which Remote Desktop product? Screens, Jump Desktop, Splashtop, other?? Inquiring minds want to know.
babe wake up!! a new sam video just dropped
I only use PC and I can recognize this
Splashtop Remote desktop allows sound to be passed through to iOS. Great video! I'm trying out Screens -- but may experiment with Splashtop next.
$10 a month
Including the bit at ~8:10 is very genuine and comes across to the consumer very well, nice

I ***HOPE**** Apple sees this video. What an epic video to show how the iPad can change mobile computing in a positive way. Wake up Apple!
I've used the surface for 3 years. The interchangeability is fun for a month. After that the form factor is getting annoying. Apple is doing right for keeping their OS where it belongs. But I do think you should be allowed to install MacOS programs on iPadOS. There's no reason not to.
"Apple, stop being a dick". Priceless. Amazing video, entertaining, enlightening and hugely relevant. Well done, you've earned another sub.
iPad with 1tb or more storage iPads should be allowed to have macos
As of today, all iPad videos will require a car chase. Thank you for your service.
I absolutely died laughing when the aspect ratio changed to “‘cinematic” mode 😂😂😂😂😂😂
