Currently I have a MacBook Pro and an iPad mini. While I love and prefer the form factor on the mini, I would trade it in a heartbeat if my MacBook and iPad could be one device. Currently I have specific programs that aren’t available on iPad I need for my job and it’s not feasible for me to switch to iPad as my main device. If I could dual boot macOS on my iPad, I would buy the pro model
@@BosuDXSame. I am an iPad Mini 6 person. If they only support external display and stage manager… that would be an awesome start ! Yet they decided not to. And the device is capable of supporting it. Sad.
It’s 387 now
option to click launch pad then have iPadOS experience would be a game changer. MacOS for heavy productivity, then switch over to "tablet mode" for casual use like watching TH-cam videos (because that's all the iPad is really good for compared to a full laptop)
This is what I wish they would do.
This would instantly make the MacBook Air obsolete that's why they aren't doing it :/
Basictly Samsung Dex but Apple.
Apple would never, but the hope is someone hacking it 🙏🏽

Can’t believe no one has done a video like this yet, it’s something I’ve thought of but haven’t tried because I don’t love the side car experience. This looks much better. Also can’t believe the pro iPads still aren’t PRO. There’s no way, it has to be coming. It just has to.
Since they have same chip as m Mac surprised that no one has figured out how do this themselves

The last bit that file management is why people are asking for Mac OS on the iPad and also instead of Apps driven thinking as we do on iPad, it should be files driven on iPad and we could just do with the iPad only setup as well… it is the multitasking (without stage manager or with stage manager I don’t care but without the limits and restrictions of stage manager) and a few more tweaks to make it more files driven than apps driven and nobody would ask for the Mac OS to be on the iPad. Worked for 2.5 years on my iPad and made an iPad only desk setup. I also have the m1 iPad Pro… I bought the Mac mini m2 recently and it blew my mind… I find organisation in clutter of files and apps that I open with one flick on the Magic Trackpad and I am in mission ctrl… however when I am on the iPad the focus driven workflow that it has to offer makes me feel at home as I had done it for 2.5 years. It makes me more productive in the work that I am doing… but I feel restricted coz of the above factors.
that is why I love my jailbroken iPad Pro M series. I have a full fledge, root-access file system that is 100x better than the "Files" app.
@@cheese22 how do u jailbreak 18.1 betas?
steve with the FOLD is hilarious... haha
If you are at home, you can use a bluetooth mouse to connect to sidecar in clamshell mode but you have to use the bluetooth mouse or trackpad and bluetooth headphones. Set it to optimise for the iPad's screen. You'll have to go to the desktop first to activate sidecar (mirror iPad screen) and then close the lid, then click the mouse that is connected to the MacBook to wake it. It'll wake to the mac lock screen on your iPad. Every time you want to use sidecar in clamshell mode, you have to do this. The advantage is that it will fill the iPad's 4:3 aspect ratio and optimise for it.
the problem is no one is going to stop buying iPads... honestly i think Apple thinks that it will really effect sales but it would be very minimal in my opinion...
They are afraid that people will stop buying macs
iPad sales would increase, and perhaps MacBook Pro sales would stay the same, but MacBook Air would crash so hard if they did this. MacBook Air costs more than an iPad Pro, and even with a price hike, or only the upper 1tb being able to have this, a touch MacBook is the endgame for any creative professional. That leaves a MacBook Pro for true heavy work, but an iPad could manage both iPad tasks, and MacBook tasks, leaving the MacBook Air in a small niche market. Even now it is in a position where older MacBooks or the MacBook Pro are better deals.
In my opinion, if a 2 in 1 was made, it would come either as a MacBook Air killer (iPad Ultra you may name it), or as a new MacBook Air with no iPad related software, simply the touch functionality and maybe Apple Pencil, but at that point you’re sacrificing iPad Pro…either way, one of these has to go because the market already overlaps enough that a new product would just kill them both.
@@joseantonio6637 MacBook Pro would stay the same mostly because it has active cooling. The air is basically dead though.
They want you to buy multiple devices. It makes them more money and makes you more likely to stay in the ecosystem. If the only devices you have are an iPhone and an iPad with MacOS, then that’s not making them that much money and if you ever decide to leave Apple, you only have 2 devices which need changing, which isn’t much. That compared to if you bought an iPhone, iPad, and MacBook. At that point you’ll probably buy AirPods or an Apple Watch or something as well. Now you’re deep into the ecosystem and bought several products.
Apple doesn’t want the iPad to be too much like a computer. And they don’t want the MacBook to have a touch screen. It means people will buy just one instead of both. Not as good for getting people invested in the ecosystem.
@@joseantonio6637that’s bc Apple is scared of the innovation that got them to where there are in the first place over coin now.
I have almost every Apple product till this day, but I bought a Surface Pro 11 last week. It is fantastic.
I wish i can like this a thousand times… surface pro is a killer , imagine if apple got that hardware first 😂😂
Surface Pro was difficult to hold as an actual laptop, requires a 2-hand carry when open.
Honestly I don’t need MacOS on my iPad Pro. What I need is a cursor that is an arrow and a real finder app for the iPad and I would be happy to
And more app optimisation for tablets

Regarding your sound issue, I’ve been doing this for a few years… jumpdesktop works great and I get audio. I can edit in FCP and everything, and as long as my internet connection is solid i get near flawless playback.
What app are you using for the Remote Desktop to the MacBook? I hear good things about Jump, but is there a better option?
It’s not jump. You can’t close the lid.
I am using Parsec and it's been great so far and free with audio, his Screens 5 remote app can't hear audio.
I really like your sense of humour! It's brilliant!
I've used the surface for 3 years. The interchangeability is fun for a month. After that the form factor is getting annoying. Apple is doing right for keeping their OS where it belongs. But I do think you should be allowed to install MacOS programs on iPadOS. There's no reason not to.
Very interesting... so... please tell us... which remote access platform are you using (I wanted to say how do you RDP into your Mac :) )
I have been asking for the *option* to run mac OS on iPad for years, but especially since the iPad and MacBook hardware converged. There's absolutely no reason to not allow users to install or dual boot iPad OS and mac OS on the M series iPads.
Both iPadOS and macOS are using the same base system files, all the iPad needs is the macOS user interface and the support for the apps. It would be a larger OS install, but wouldn’t need to be as big as running both on an iPad.
What software you used for it? And how is the config to access external? You should do a video about it. I tried to find in youtube several and several times. No one have a video explaining this configuration.
It’s not Chrome Remote Desktop, right?
Correct me if I'm wrong .... but this is basically a "remote desktop" to your Macbook using an iPad .... right ?
Yes

I really wish Apple will either allow MacOS to run natively on iPads or create a touch based version of MacOS. This is what I’m looking for now. The new Surface Pro from Microsoft is the first time I’ve contemplated in purchasing from them, except I prefer the Apple ecosystem.
Love the intro btw and now I’m a new subscriber. 😅
they wont do that since it’ll cannibalize their mac sales and that’s a no no. in reality, they want you to have both
@@baoboba Yeah I know they won’t, they don’t want to loose profit. Maybe one day.
iPadOS finally getting all the features you'd expect from a desktop OS is infinitely more likely than Apple putting MacOS on an iPad (and probably a better idea because touch and mouse have different needs)
People never seem to discuss the two elephants in the room - battery life and security model.
I suspect the battery life by transplanting macOS on iPad would be pretty bad - iPadOS and iOS is super aggressive on pausing/terminating apps, which is not how macOS manages the processes. 13-inch MacBook Air has a significantly bigger battery than the 13-inch iPad Pro, and for a good reason.
I agree the Files app is in an abysmal state, and 'pro' apps on iPads aren't great, as well as how iPadOS doesn't let you manage long running task, but I suspect the solution isn't as simple as just transplanting macOS.
There has been attempts to have 2-in-1 OS, like Windows 8. And when it comes to Windows 2-in-1 devices they aren't doing amazing, and previous attempt of Windows+Android 2-in1 was cludgy at best. Desktop and Tablet experience is hard to merge.
thank you. when (and if) Apple ever does this, they are going to do it right - they've never been in the business of providing a clunky user experience.
iOS (and iPadOS) will always be the sandbox to "think different" as to how an OS operates & more fundamentally carry the inquiry of "what is a computer?"
it'll happen but probably not in ways we think it will :)
I’m an iPad pro M1 user and I only use my old iMac for Musescore. My perfect device wold be an ipad with both OS and choose which one depending on the use
5:30 - how to set this up (briefly)
I honestly was so irritated by the "stolen iPad with macOS" from the very start, but luckily there is an explanation
Windows Surface is a strong contender, have had the same iPad Pro since 2018 and I see no reason to change it. M4 why? Totally agree.
Steve should have put macOS onto his Zfold also
Great video, the only reason I love jailbreak nowadays is because I can fully run a virtualized MacOS environment on my iPad Pro M series and it runs pretty well. It has been a game changer for working on the go for me.
oh man my back hurts, i doubled down on MacBook 12" retina or the iPad Mini 6 depending on what i'm doing. my huge heavy M1 MBA is basically my desktop computer and never leaves the house
funny u mention this - Ive been using my iPadPro as my daily driver for 4 years & gave in & ordered a M mini & switched it last minute to a MBP "just in case" - I couldn't hear the thought of my "desktop" being tethered!
Why not just use a Mac Mini or iMac at that point
@@TheRenegade... when I found someone selling a MBP 16GB/1TB for $10 more than the best I could find on the mini it was a no-brainer: better resale value w lots of freebies for 0.4 lbs: backlit keyboard w touch ID, trackpad, camera, retina display, speakers/mic, longlife battery, runs off USB-C PD (not AC), & still has active cooling. now the device can play "double duty" docked or travel (esp if i decide to leave the iPadPro home)
I love the whole idea behind this video, but as I was watching, I kept wondering: what happened to that MacBook Air you previously fell in love with? Where does it fit in all of this?
I ended up selling it since we needed cash to keep producing these videos and it was a luxury to have two macos devices.
@@thesamuelnam wow thats sad
@@thesamuelnam sorry I only got to reading your comment now. I feel a bit sad to read it.🥲 You really seemed to make great use of that MacBook for overseas work. Your "I travelled 9071km with Macbook Air M2 - Real use review" is still one of my favourite videos. Really inspiring how technology can enable you be portable to keep working everywhere, and also support a cause you care about while doing so. It's what nudged me to my own purchase of an M2 Air, even though I'm not really into Apple stuff in general. I believe it made my life easier and more productive.
I'm so with you on that last point. We need better file management on IOS and iPad OS. The current files app feels so limited.
As someone who has only dipped their toes in Apple ecosystems through the years, this is THE issue for me. I would upgrade my 8th gen iPad for a new M iPad in a heartbeat if there was better file management, but I just won't give them more money until then.
that's the rub - his point that the iPad is the best tablet means it will continue to live in this alternative paradigm for as long as the market will bear. the second you allow macOS on the iPadPro, all the lines get blurred & developers no longer get to see what users experience purely in iPadOS and answer the question of "how do we move away from organizing data without files (aka Finder)?" Some genius will wake up w a light bulb one day! 💡
Since the first big iPad Pro...all I have wanted was a base which was Mac and you docked the iPad for Screen and Camera. Pull them apart, iPad OS device and MacOS base which could be connected to any display with cable or wireless connection.
wow this is a really good idea 💡 I had a colleague let me borrow a broken screen MBP2015 & it either goes straight HDMI or to get rid of the double keyboard clumsiness, I just control the MBP desktop through Screens. (it didn't occur to me to do the same thing remotely like Andrew did!)
I've been debating just tearing off the top lid on the MBP (it's useless outside of the camera which still doesn't get used) & your comment is neat because you're right, it would be neat to dock my iPadPro as the top lid!!
I just ordered a new MBP & this whole time I've been debating if I'll be carrying both & if it were just the "base" and carrying a versatile "screen" this would be golden indeed!
that guy could actually play Steve Jobs
Well, he would have to drop a few pounds.
The intro is the best I ever seen on TH-cam
I like your video, but I downvote for not mention which app you use
I'm in the same boat. I've been waiting for macOS on the iPad ever since they've put the M1 in them. I've also tried the Surface Pro and it's nice but it's not there (and knowing Microsoft... it's probably never going to be there). I've returned it after finding it two mornings in a row without battery.
The fact that the iPad Pros still don't have dual fast boot is an absolute shame.

Back when Parallels Access was a thing (before they killed a perfectly good product because they didn't want to develop it any more), I worked through my iPad to a shared Mac all the time, and got real work done. Keyboard worked fine, screen tapping for things I needed to click on. So it's possible and not even that hard. Now we need to find out what screen sharing program he was using. Jump Desktop is okay, but not as good as Parallels Access was.
watching videos, editing them, or playing games(playable if they don't require reaction) are probably no good, but typing isn't bad at all even if the connection isn't really strong, i.e. codes, documents, accessing files, etc. I used the Chrome remote desktop a couple times. The experience is not flawless but very usable, it definitely feels like typing on an old computer due to latency.
@@peterpayne2219you might have figured it out but he’s using Screen5. I used to use Parallels, also sad when they dumped it. Was going to try Jumpdesk but their website hasn’t been updated for years so not sure if I trust it. Let me know what you think of JumpDesk

I got the Surface Pro a couple of years ago wondering if an all-in-one would convert me. The hardware feels nice and seems like a good idea but the biggest problem (apart from loud fans on the Intel models) is that it's really only a tabletop 'laptop.' That kickstand is impossible to use on your lap. So now if I want to do tablet stuff I grab the iPad, if I want to do laptop stuff I grab the MacBook, and the SP mostly just gets plugged into a monitor if I need Windows.
this is an important data point!
Exactly, the SP11’s lack of “lapability” was the reason I returned mine
This is an awesome video, thanks for putting it together. This has been a dream for me since I first started using my iPad years ago!

The ability to have your primary Apple Home Server that you connect every thing too and only grab the local interface like the iPad glass screen to see and work on content means we are so much closer to Apple Home being a thing. This would also be nice so each person can have their own profile not that is the way it will be at first but maybe down the road we can boot multi profiles on family sharing devices! You can run iPadOS and iOS apps and widgets on MacOS, right? Just let iPad Pro users RUN certain MacOS apps on their iPads! No need to make all-in-one OS for them (though that's be nice), just let us run big boys apps on our beutiful tablets! That's all that needed.

Bro, never mind the iPad, your steering wheel is on the wrong side!
J/K. Interesting video. Wait until you hear about headless MacBooks.
Yes my brother, tell ‘em. I been using my iPad Pro for years. I use it more than my phone. I needed to use adobe’s apps and they either don’t work on iPad, or they are horrible and buggy. I’ve been waiting for the oled iPad for years, and I’m in love with the new iPad but I didn’t like that they didn’t improve the battery life. I have the m1 iPad Pro and as a heavy user, I have to charge it every 2-3 hours! It runs out of battery so quickly and it takes forever to charge. I was very close to getting the new surface pro, but I just couldn’t.
So, I got a MacBook Pro with m3 pro chip this week, and the difference is very noticeable. It charges faster, lasts longer, can handle heavy tasks, apps work better, texting is easier, and the fact that I can move the cursor from the MacBook’s screen to the iPad, then drag and drop files between two different devices so seamlessly makes me glad that I didn’t switch to surface pro. That would’ve been a huge downgrade and a big risk for my data and privacy.
Comparing Apple to Microsoft is like comparing Bentley to Honda. No matter how hard Honda tries to copy Bentley, it will never be close.
The services, the quality, the design, the warranty, the innovation, the user-experience is just something else.
this is music to my ears! I gave into ordering a MBP this past week after using an iPadPro as my daily driver for 4 years. I can't wait to experience what sounds like Sidecar!

@@DoctorAtomTNT oh yeah thanks. Used to love that app until it went subscription.
I *still* use the original app in my iPadPro four years later - best 20 bucks I've ever spent. but I get it, $20 isnt exactly going to keep the lights on & they still provide free tech support when i need it. but I made sure to give them my beef that I'm not going to switch if the app continues to support my current use cases. they need to help their current userbase understand what they can do newly otherwise it occurs as a money grab (which im sure isn't their intention at heart as they have a great app!)
The iPad is fine with iPad OS. If you exclusively use it for movie watching, reading, extra screen. If you need a laptop for work, just stick with a Macbook. I am contented with this setup. But Apple is also at fault by putting a powerful CPU on that thing and get people imagine stuff like putting macOS.
MacOS on iPad would kill the Macbook sure, but it would also kill the entirety of Microsoft's Surface line, along with all the 2-in-1 ultrabooks from every other hardware manufacturer. I only use PC and I can recognize this
Congratulations! You’ve just invented MacBook 12! I’m still using one for sole purpose - screen sharing into my more powerful macs. It’s lighter than iPad with keyboard and more convenient in many ways (Cmd - Tab is translated into target host)
That was a professional steal. Love your Videos♥
I don't mind the UI, I just want apps and features for power users. The iPad Pro is actually the iPad Plus - it has no feature or app that can't also be used on the other models. I have used a Surface Pro for over a year and I think a mobile-first UI like on the iPad is definitely the way to go. But just porting a few apps like final cut pro is not enough. There needs to be a way to either install Mac OS applications directly in iPadOS or at least a much more efficient way of porting those applications.
whoever is buying the most expensive Ipads, is balls deep inside Apple Ecosystem and has a Macbook too. letting them have MACOS on the IPAD means lots of them won't bother buying the Macbook.
Just have a subscription to use MACOS on ipad. $10 a month
OMG putting the fam in this video is
Bravo! Great video is like watching a sitcom 😄
I have a Macbook Pro 16 inch too. I've vercro'd a 2TB SSD to the lid, so now I have 3TB. It's not enough. So, I thought I'd remote in to it from a lighter device. I thought a 16inch m1 Macbook Air. I've got a Raspbery Pi 5 VNC remote going, it's OK but it lags enough to be irritating. I don't play games so that's not an issue.
My plan now is to plumb loads of external drives to the MBP and run it remotely from anything. But, I won't get sound.
I think you can't either.
Anyone got any answers for this? Also, I'd love to access and run - lagless vis the internet. Now VNC is charging - far too much in my view for internet linking, I wonder if there is another way !
My kit is not new enough for sidecar use yet. Is it faster than VNC ?
Why doesn't it have sound either??

iPad with 1tb or more storage iPads should be allowed to have macos
I use remote desktop +tailscale with my ipad and love that. I can access my windows desktop from anywhere (with an internet connection) as well as access the files on my desktop from the iPad files app. I already love my iPad, but improving external monitor support/multitasking and hopefully more 3d apps would be great.
This would be great for me integrating MAC OS with iPad applications for audio production…I you using the iPad in side car/universal mode ? How does it work ?
Can you make a video of how you created the virtual desktop for this?!
Yes.
Great video! How's the latency?
You are my new favorite tech youtuber ❤
I didn’t come here for the IPad, I came here for the great videos!
