    Classic just had a vibe of mystery and discovery to it. I still remember just walking around the starting zones and looking at the vast world map, thinking I want to see it all.

    For me, hardcore classic has completely reinvigorated the game. All zones are populated, people talk and cooperate, economy works etc. All because people are leveling all the time as they die constantly, which also means there's so much work on the line at all times. Last night I did Scarlet Monastery and it was exhilarating. It's the best version of WoW I've played since Vanilla.

      ive never played wow before Legion (and that was on the free trial thing at the time.) but it never could hold my attention very long. the game was kind of boring tbh. although i kept trying once in a while. but i thought id give hardcore a go since i really enjoy permadeath in games. and ive been having insane amounts of fun. i didnt think it was possible for me to enjoy wow but i absolutely love hardcore. as you said, theres always people everywhere and because the game is actually challenging, it almost requires to go and ask for help with certain quests and situations. actually a first mmorpg ive played that ACTUALLY feels like what an mmorpg is supposed to be.

      Absolutely! On top of that I'd add the emphatic feeling you have towards other players. I was saved a lot of times and also saved some low levels players on HC, which is amazing! It's like you know how hard it is to put levels on your char and when you see another player struggle you want to help them, which creates an awesome atmosphere in the game. HC WoW is the best WoW!

    I think a big problem with retail is the competitiveness of max level content and it being the only way to play the game. Leveling in hardcore classic has been so much fun for me because I can make my crazy builds and not be concerned if I'm performing or not. I'm just creating my own adventure. In retail I fell anxious before I even enter a dungeon, afraid that I might miss out on one very important talent that will drop my DPS. I think the new talent system of DF is amazing, I just don't have fun using it in PvP M+ or Raiding.

      I agree, Blizzard should change what they think, max level content is not all.

      Isn't there's a ton of content in-between max level content?
      Even at mex level.. Can't you find groups that aren't worried your running the absolute meta for your class?
      This seems like extreme raids is where you would find those types of players?
      I'm a new player looking to get started in WoW.

    I tried retail. I really enjoyed Dragonflight. It wasn't until I got decked out in raiding gear and had to go to Mythic to continue gearing. I couldn't get a group because I hadn't done any of the dungeons on mythic and my gear score wasn't 10 levels above the minimum. I had gone back to retail from Wrath because I was running into issues getting into raids because of not having the achievements to prove I had done the raid (even though I had done it countless times the first time around in Wrath) Then they had to check their stupid website to see what kind of times I'd been getting in dungeons ect. And then they would accept someone else who turns out paid gold to be carried through dungeons and didn't know anything about the mechanics (found this out because a friend of mine made it into the group when I didn't.) but after returning from Dragonflight, it had gotten even worse because they had started doing the stupid application/interview process with Heroics. This was when I was done with it. I missed how Classic was and decided to go back to vanilla. I was super stoked that it was as busy as it was when I logged on. Now I'm loving how fun Hardcore is and I can acutally enjoy myself again.

      Real talk I hate the community for being filled with people like that. Very unhealthy attitude towards a fucking game and usually they're not nearly as good as they believe to be to warrant such a stringent "application" process.

  • @Karnagie

    Wow's attempts to be "competitive" and "balanced" are by far the things that hold it back the most on retail.
    Classes suck because one can never be too far ahead of the other so they're always getting reworked, only for there to be clear broken specs and classes every patch ANYWAYS so not only is it ineffective, it's completely wasted effort

  • @LegendaryOldwarrior
    @LegendaryOldwarrior 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    I haven't played DF since like 2 weeks into the first major patch. One thing that bother me was actually something simple, flying. Like I like dragon flying and it was cool and such. Overtime I was like ok can we let our other mounts be able to fly now? Like I know it's a little thing but I do enjoy flying around with my other mounts. On a serious note, being a healer from what I have read since the first major patch has been not good at all. Since all my guys I M+ with are healers, I knew I didn't want to deal with that headache lol.

    There's quite a few things Blizzard - as an institution - has never quite understood about the appeal of Classic WoW. This is best encompased by the "you think you do, but you don't" statement that was so obviously wrong.
    The continued appeal of Classic WoW is down to several points, some of which you pointed out in this video. But namingly:
    1. The world was vast and open. Finding your own way is far more memorable than being funneled through a set path.
    2. Inconvenience creates meaningful interactions. If your interactions are limited to an automated queue and efficiency becomes the guiding metric, then you lose the MMO part of your RPG. And that makes it shallow.
    3. Imperfect balance: Blizzard never quite understood that it was okay for some classes to be unique. In fact, it makes up a big part of the class fantasy and appeal. Sure, Heroism was powerful. But it also made Shamans feel awesome. Vampiric Embrace was unique and cool. The Hunter class quest was great. And it's okay for classes to be special, even if it's unbalanced.
    4. On a similar note, loot in Classic was also imperfectly balanced. You had random trinkets being BiS because of some quirky interaction. But again, that made it meaningul. Hardly anyone in retail gets emotionally invested in their gear as it will be replaced by the next patch.
    5. Redering you past content obsolete is just incredibly wasteful. I know it's not technically true, but so much of Blizzard's content over the years has become obsolete. Such as shame, as the game hasn't really grown much in depth. Only in bredth.
    6. People like an "easy" game. I know the latest raiding content gets the most attention. But actually, few people enjoy such challenging content. Just look at how frequently Classic raids are still done, despite being trivial. While it does matter having "aspirational content", it only needs to make up a small part of the game.
    Anyway, I think the continued success of classic is teaching Blizzard a lesson. I'm just not sure if they're willing to listen.

    I always try my best to learn all the fights and learn the most efficient way to do things. I am a bricklayer and it is much the same. Precision, timing, and relentless pursuit of a goal are at the forefront. I just enjoy doing those things in a way that does not hurt the body so much. And yes, everything after that you said was right... About getting the right addons. I still do not have my interface the way I want it. And then I play so many classes too that sometimes the different interfaces clash. Ug, and macros!?! They too are a pain but you got to do them. Every little bit that you can do to be the best is nice and you can look back at it. No one else will really care but whatever.

    I don't know why but something about the connection between monetizing level boosts and the focus of mostly delivering content at "end game" clicked. It's just another example of how some games create a problem and sell the solution.

    Classic is by far more immersive and addictive. But for me it takes too much time. And a lot of it is wasted time. Also when I used to play I was 13. So when I was in a raid and it was on master loot I didn't know what was going on and I just never got any items. Ended up pissed and went back to retail. There's definitely benefits and quality of life upgrades in retail. You're right that you shouldn't have to use Google and TH-cam to figure out how to play a game.

  • @tippystir

    For me it has always been, and will always be, the social aspect; “does this game require me to actually work with and interact with others in a way that’s both fun and mutually beneficial?” If it answers that question then it will always win out for me. Classic WoW always answers this question, apart from solo mage play but that’s a whole different player type. There is no greater sense of camaraderie and group accomplishment than shutting down an entire questing zone by killing its enemy factions flight master, etc.

    Old WoW gave you a purpose and progression felt real. You went out and struggled to gain levels and gold so you could learn more abilities. You ran dungeons to get big gear upgrades that felt impactful. All so you could hit 60 and start slaying elemental lords and massive dragons. Now, you are rushed to max level so you can grind the same dungeon on repeat so you can get some forgettable upgrade with a slight stat increase with no cool effect.

    6:20 - how do people not seeing it as a problem that people are EXPECTED to watch a 15 minute video to get the meta routes and how to handle mechanics....
    you're supposed to be able to encounter something for the first time and with tutorial knowledge get through the challenge.
    that means - AoE should be telegraphed - "tankbusters" should be telegraphed. stacking debuffs should be clear and share visual indicators to what type it is. is it a mounting amount of vulnerability? is it able to be decursed/dispelled, if not WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO TO GET RID OF IT?
    WoW doesn't do that, because of that we need weakauras to discern these things. Like you get 15 seconds in vanilla to recognise you've gota bomb on you and to move away from people.
    but you have to read the debuff to know that - 15 seconds is enough time though.
    most bosses in wotlk classic has mechanics that you have no idea to know what they do. like what does Krystallus shatter do? you get slowed and stunned and then you either take like 1k dmg or get one-shot..... no explanation, no indicators that have been tutorialised in questing content as to how you're supposed to handle this KIND of mechanic...
    The more instances of this you have the more players are incentivised to DO HOMEWORK about PLAYING content... that's not fun...

    I started in Wrath and have zero nostalgia for Vanilla. In March 2019, I gave up on BFA. Took a break. Discovered FFXIV in June and played ever since. Tried Classic on launch night and let my one month sub lapse. Last year during the prelaunch for Wrath Classic I started a BE Paladin on a PVE Server - got her to Nothrend. During the first DF Prelaunch I got a retail character or two up to 60. Then let sub lapse.
    I bought DF during the recent half price sale. Got a character to 70. Then went back to Classic. My Pally is doing Sholozar Basin.
    Satisfied for now.

      its a fun open world rpg and its really the most telling era of the game that actually felt like a true rpg. BUT, its not 2004 anymore, players are exponentially better, and classics ENDGAME is extremely piss poor. the endgame content is so boring, because its main selling point is the open world and then theres not really anything to do in the open world once you hit 60. classic has better leveling, and retail has infinitely better endgame. i prefer retail by a million miles. i dont wanna hit target dummy bosses for gear that i lose the bid on because someone bought more gold than i did.

    • @annekekramer3835
      @annekekramer3835 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Raid logging isn't fun endgame either. It might have a thousand mechanics, what does it matter if it's only once a week from 18 till 21? If you ignore the vanilla raids, which I agree are poor and I also don't like that the gear obtained there makes dungeon gear completely obsolete. So, if you ignore raids, the game feels like a true MMORPG, with the next upgrade always almost in reach. The dungeons have great design, and feel like something you have to use a bit of strategy with. In retail, all dungeons are done within 20 minutes or so while pulling 20+ mobs? I want to feel like an adventurer, not a demi-God! If I wanted to play a hack and slash, I would have played PoE.

    • @Ethanasia
      @Ethanasia 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      in terms of retail you are only talking about extremely low level content. you can do 4 difficulties of the raid a week, you can do mythic+ as much as you want to get gear and push your rating, and for pvp you have 4 different brackets to push in and can queue all d ay to your hearts content. retail is not raid logging in the slightest as raiding has actually become a much more small part of the game. theres also achievement farming and collection/completionism content. you will never run out of active gameplay to do.@@annekekramer3835

    Retail being trying to save itself since Cata. Outside of the launch spikes its never seen Cata numbers. Wrath numbers are impossible. It's not the same WoW. So much has changed and over complicated it to keep people paying. Classic is simple and gives me the same escape I had in college. And it's not a hallway mmo like most nowadays. If you want to do really well in WoW yeah, read youre stuff, put effort into it. If youre staying in low rated PvP, LFR raids(if youre in norm you should still know mechancs and alittle bit about your class)
    You read the guides and set up your UI and stuff once, its worth it, customization is awesome.
    NOW if you're trying to run +15 keys or heroic raid+ or do high rated PvP, dont be that guy who is just there pressing buttons not helping at all... put some effort in if you want to do hard content.

    Why can't classic players finally abandon the "classic brain rot" of constantly attributing "a lot of work" to what always boils down to a tedious, monotoneous grind for gold and XP - that has been streamlined by guides to a level that will always rival retail.

  • @blacksunshine9995
    @blacksunshine9995 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

    It's very simple: Do you like to level up slowly and do tedious quests that take you from continent to continent on foot and give you next to nothing as a reward for doing a single quest that took you nearly an hour? Then play classic. Do you like to level up at a faster rate, but once you reach max level you are met by a massive wall of toxicity in the form of elitism that stonewalls you from doing most of the endgame content effectively? Then play retail.

      I really only got kicked from 1 dungeon in the last 2 months, I don’t have a DPS meter or anything, I just play the game… you guys ever think maybe your so worried about item level and meta your forgetting to just play the game?

    • @bungodunko4123
      @bungodunko4123 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@webduelist yea see i tried taking that approach going back into df after taking a break for a bit. But what ive learned is the game incentivizes you in every way to play meta. It causes other players in your groups to resent you for not playing the meta. Affixes are the only new interesting parts of mythics. I tried tanking this this time around and because i havent played every dungeon hundreds of times for every expansion I didnt know routes. This cause keys to be bricked not cause we died just cause we took too long a route. There is just so much investment needed for retail content only to get your character from demigod 5999 to demigod 6000. The formula for time investment vs what you get doesnt make sense to me for both casual and sweaty.

    Classic wow is ruining retail. wow Classic is one of the reasons why retail is doing so poorly these days. If a company has to split the money between two games, that was meant for one game, one the main game will go bad sooner or later. Shadowlands is proof of that

    I just don't get why the usual "Retail" video always insists on you downloading/using dozens of addons and reading guides for hours.
    This comes across as useless fearmongering when the average new player is probably just going to level a few classes for the first time, questing through different xpacs and doing some world/dungeon content on the entry level difficulties.
    Next to no "new" player should ever be conceirned with anything beyond that. And if they are capable of high end content they usually have some prior experience with similar games/content and will still not jump head first into top100 mythic raiding or 0,1% mythic+ runs.

    "It's not a bad game", for years of gamming dictates if a game constantly requires meta and is generally extremely incentivizing for meta; it's basically bad.
    The journey is the game, what do people me, the main significance, it is the significance of the entire game, and reason why game exist; I don't understand.

    • @hachijospaniard5643
      @hachijospaniard5643 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Its ok if a class is meta, as long as it doesn't inhibit or effect the performance of other classes.
      Basically, the content is clearable at a decent pace even if slightly slower.
      the problem comes, when a class that is clearly outperforming other classes, and the devs buff every single mob, to make that class not so viable; and at the end nerf every other class indirectly;
      Or the devs overtone a new mob only taking in consideration the meta class;
      essentially slowly nerfing the nonmeta class; and sometimes it's especially true, when the meta class has immunity; and the devs add piercing; making everybody else suffer.
      This is what usually happens in companies.
      This is why people hate meta; in specifically blatantly op meta
      IN SHORT
      "It's like having a newborn child; and giving your attention to the newborn child, while ignoring the older child; causing the older child to feel rejected."
      That what people are annoyed at.

    В retail версии контент слишком перенасыщен и своей динамикой похож на сессионки. Он чувствуется бездушным по сравнению с WOTLK classic. В классической версии ты ощущаешь прогресс от прокачки, взаимодействия с другими игроками и общения с ними, перелетами и ходьбой между зонами на карте, мировым pvp, ценностью и уникальностью новой вещи и многое другое.

    The big difference is not the game. Retail WOW is exceptional and I don't care what anyone says. Most players, when starting new characters or if they are completely new themselves, prefer to start from the beginning. You can do this in Retail, but it just isn't designed that way. It is better to just jump into BFA & then you are just lost as to what the fuck is going on.

    One word for why the old school is superior: culture.
    Culture is everything in these games.
    But culture is one thing a huge corporation cannot control easily.
    Times like these need a hero, an axeman, aThrall.

    Adding flying mounts was the beginning of the end for WoW. No risk of dying going to dungeons when you can just go 50ft up, point in the correct direction and auto-fly. Also, you miss out on seeing the actual world.

    I'll say it, Classic is the better game. Sure, retail might be the better game for high end competitive players, but Classic is the better overall game. The world in Classic feels so much bigger, social interaction happens all the time, you see people walking around everywhere so that the world feels alive instead of everyone sitting in Valdrakken in retail using menus to teleport into every bit of content the game has, you actually have to group up with people to get through content out in the world instead of feeling like some invincible warrior due to level scaling in retail. The journey matters in Classic, every level you feel like you accomplished something and you earn it, because the world is dangerous and everything is a pain in the ass. In retail, things are handed to you on a silver platter until end game and then things immediately get overly complicated and kick your ass to such a degree it's not that fun. In Classic you slowly learn how to play your class and get abilities over time, in retail things are thrown at you so fast you can be a max level character and still have no clue how to even kind of play your class properly. Also the lore in Classic makes so much more sense, largely because all the zones have self contained stories that form a wider, more cohesive story of the world, whereas in retail I could start as a night elf in Teldrassil until level 10, then end up in Draenor leveling, and then end up in the Dragon Isles. That story would feel so incredibly confusing and out of place, how is anyone who hasn't played the game forever supposed to understand what the hell is going on.
    I know it sounds like I'm bashing retail really hard, and to a degree I am, but the truth is that retail has changed so much from Classic I would barely call them the same game even though they might both be called World of Warcraft. For some people the changes made in retail over the years might be for the best, and that's fine if that's how they feel, but for me, Classic is a superior experience and a better MMO than retail.

    Hardcore probably played a part in reinvigorating the love for classic again, but let's not kid ourselves into thinking that 2019 re-release classic suddenly brought back that "oldschool mmo magic" again, people were mage boosting out their asses to skip the journey they so much praised the game for and criticized retail for lacking it, and the community is just as toxic on classic, if not much worse in some cases, they'll absolutely flame you if you don't know the mechanics of this near 2 decade old video game. Not to mention the rampant amount of RMT, which, while it's blizzard's fault for not managing the game, the community is also very complicit in it.
