    1.) When your SIM rig has a better seat/steering wheel combo than my actual car...
    2.) Absolutely love DIY's..

    Lovely, informative and useful video mate. You have a new subscriber. I'm planning my own rig now, this definitely helped. Just a quick question, you found your steering mount too far away when you first sat in your seat, your comfortable position is something I'd thing was too close while the original would have been perfect for me. Now, I know this is basically down to preference, but what type of SIM do you usually do and how much difference does finding a technical position make with a Direct Drive Wheel?

    • @Bbeavis
      @Bbeavis  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am just a casual driver, usually spend time in any sort of cars in Assetto Corsa. I have always preferred a wheel that is close to me, that's the wonder of the 8020 type rig, its nearly infinitely adjustable.

      Sorry to hear that, I'm not familiar with a Subsonic rig, couldn't find anything with a brief google, but going to assume at $200 that its similar to a playseat, and perhaps nowhere near the strength and modularity of an 8020 setup.

      @@Bbeavis no not even close to the strength of the one you put together. I want one of those but being in Ohio , I can’t seem to find that material without selling a kidney or something valuable LOL. Apparently the Subsonic cockpit I bought is from France , it looks like the PlaySeat Evolution type cockpit. It does the job , but we all want something as sturdy as a tank LOL. Take care my friend stay safe.

    Great project man! I'm also in the middle of designing my cockpit and realised when I saw your building video that the standard length of 135cm might be too unnecessarily long for me considering I'm 178cm. From what I see you're much taller than me and even with your height the 135 cm of general length for the cockpit is a bit overkill considering the presence of a seat rail etc...
    So can you please share with me how tall you are? so that I can make adjustments on my design... I have a feeling that I can reduce the overall length to 120 cm easily... Thanks in advance!

    on the rear where the 80-20 comes together, couldnt you have made the side pieces a bit longer and just used the corner brackets on the inside like you did to secure it together making the rear end a square you can cap off instead of tapping all those holes and having to use the brackets on the outside as well? just an idea :) I think simlabs did what I was mentioning for the bottom chassis part. BTW can you estimate how much the overall cost of 80/20 and hardware it cost in materials? not including the wheel, pedals, seat, etc.) just the cockpit. I want to know how much I would save doing it myself compared to buying a simlab 80/20 cockpit.

    • @Bbeavis
      @Bbeavis  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, the rear section could have overlapped, but I liked the tapered style look, it's mostly just and aesthetic choice to make my rig different. The approximate cost is around $800 (AUD) for the chassis without any of the "sim" parts.

    • @d3tach3d
      @d3tach3d 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Bbeavis awesome, thanks for the info. Thats waaaay cheaper than the $3000ish 8020 variants from all the big Sim shops like Sim Labs. Ive saved and documented all your vids and info on the chassis for when the time comes to build my own. The only challenge I think Ill have is figuring out what seat rails to use and what seat that would fit those rails. Im thinking of just buying another sports car seat from a newer model STi, Corvette, Honda Si, Camaro, Challenger, Mazda 6, really just anything with a comfortable bucket seat with the rails already attached to them to have less fab work. I find even the "cheap" Racing Seats Buckets stiff, uncomfortable, and they're still on the pricey side for being low quality plastic, fabric, stitching, and foam. Since stationary sim rigs are not race cars I wont be needing race belts or anything like that. I've always wondered and dont really understand why sim guys go for super expensive full blown race car seats like Sparco for instant that's made for race car applications and still aren't very comfy to sit in for hours on end. Theyre meant for crash safety safety, ergonomics, and only sat in for short stints unlike sim racing where you can spend 4+ hours at once. Thats where a nice sports car seat that would be massively cheaper and a lot more comfy with very similar properties to a racing seat with side bolstering and other ergonomical goodness with actual good materials and foam made to last the lifetime of a cars use. Don't get me started on those ridiculous "Gamer chairs that use a race car bucket seat design, lol". There's Office chairs that are made by some of the best engineers in that business to keep workers comfy for long 8 hour shifts yet these kids and men pay hundreds for some "cool looking" racing gamer chair thats garbage and obviously not designed for use as an office chair. haha. Anywho, the wooden rig I have now uses an old 95' Prelude seat which works great and hugs all the right areas but I think with this new build it deserves a nicer sports car seat. I saw a pair of 2010 Sti bucket seats for $300 locally so i'm hoping I can stay around the $100-200 for one great bucket seat from a sports car with the rails instead of knock off "race car buckets". Gotta make sure that its all manual too. Sorry for the rant and ramble.

    I like the build, nice job. My question though, why did you tap and drill the end piece and use outside brackets? Couldn't you have just used inside brackets and covers for the exposed extrusion? Seems like it would have been clean and saved you some work?

    • @Bbeavis
      @Bbeavis  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree, that would've been quicker. And I do actually have inner corner brackets. But I intentionally wanted to run some tapered corner brackets on the outside for a more sleek/tidy look. The effort to tap the thread was not too bad, just took a little time with the drill. I may have mentioned in the video that I had new brackets to go in place, but didn't have them when I recorded. I have the new brackets installed now and they look quite nice.

    How come you didnt run the rear most back piece of 40/120 flush with the the inside so it would be flush and square instead of having to use 8 of the corner brackets on the outside? That would have reduced the need to drill and tap 16 holes and you could have braced it well enough with corner braces and fasteners on the inside (like you did anyways), making the whole thing look square/flush and a little cleaner. It seemed a bit overkill. Was this a design reason or just a personal aesthetic thing? Just a thought. Thanks Mate!

    Ergonomics are a total bitch. I'm drawing up ideas on how I want to do a flight pit rather than racing. I've seen a few that actually built their own seats(one used couch foam that he cut to size). But companies that make the real desk chairs spend tons of time and money trying to work out what's best for comfort and long term support. I don't have either to just toss into 100 versions to get it right. I'm hoping to find an actual seat from a car(looking more for consumer car for comfort than a racing chair) might even try to look around at a local junk yard. Then I just need a frame to give mounting positions for a hotas, button box/panel or two, and some monitors. With yours being on 2060(I think that's 2060 extrusion, I'm too broke to pay attention and have the memory of a goldfish cracker) it's extremely modular and adjustable. I was thinking more using pvc for mine, since I don't have anything to cut the extrusion, or know anyone with the tools to borrow for it.
