My best guess is that people takes op's story with to big of a grain of salt, they assume that since we only have op's point of view, it must be biased in his favor, and that therefore the waiter must be a lot less to blame. Honnestly, while I disagree I can get this, as this is probably how most karens would tell the stories where they acted like karens.

Story 5: I hate hate hate that I barely get two bites into my appetizer and the entree is brought out. So I ask for it to wait until we are done. I'm okay with waiting longer between as they cook it. But to bring it in so soon after I told them no to? Yeah, gonna get mad. Somewhere along the line someone didn't get the message to pause. OP is NTA.

  • @trash-hime

Last story: NTA, the waitstaff were entirely in the wrong. She was asked UPFRONT to pace the appetizer and entrée so there would be time to finish the appetizer BEFORE the entrée was served and she failed to do that. Instead they brought the entrée out early MULTIPLE times, only to get huffy when it was sent back because the table wasn't ready for them. Then instead of keeping the plates under warming, they allowed OP's plate to go cold (which means it should have automatically been trashed and remade without charge). Waitress then avoids the table, refusing to refill drinks and the table have to get management involved. Management smooths things over and offers free refills to their margs but SHE BRINGS THE WRONG DRINKS and gets pissed off when she's corrected. Stiffing her tip is warranted because none of her service deserves it. Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if management ended up firing her as she clearly doesn't belong in a customer service setting as she can't follow simple orders. Behavior like that will just cost the restaurant in the long run if they keep her.

I work at a McDonald's store. We typically try to get food out quickly. I'm one of the cooks for the sole reason of me just not being a people person. I genuinely dislike a large portion of people due to a general distrust of people. Hell, my old general manager made an agreement with me to avoid training me on service period because of that. (She was promoted to an area supervisor, so the agreement still stands) If I had ever decided to do what that waitress had done even with my status as a cook I'd likely get myself fired in a fucking heartbeat.

Last Story: As far as I'm concerned OP made only one demand/request: that the entree's not be brought until the appetizers are finished. This was ignored by the kitchen (if the server even told them). I'm 67yrs old and I've never been in a decent restaurant where OP's request would even have needed to be made. Whenever my family goes out to eat, we always order our appetizers and main dishes at the same time, (I've never, ever had anyone ask us if we just want to order the appetizers and then leave the menus so we can order the other stuff later) and they always come out staggered, because that's the whole point in appetizers vs. main dishes.

@@weybye91 if this is anywhere in Europe at least, this is very common to order everything except pudding at once.
      Normally:
1- drinks while looking at menu
2- starters and main and maybe more drinks
3- pudding when finished with main
I think it is perfectly reasonable to order everything at once if you know what you want. The server just didn't know how to relay this to the kitchen. All the server has to do it wait to tell the kitchen for the main or just tell the kitchen that OP's table wants to wait but here's what we want so it makes it easier (and faster) for everyone.

the AITA story... absolutely not. I worked as a waiter and bartender for years before moving to manufacturing and maintenance. Therefore, I am well aware that I am a hard table to wait on because I remember all those service points that were hammered into me while I worked in the service industry. However, it is ABSOLUTELY your right as a diner to request your apps be finished before your entre arrives. It infuriates me when I am halfway thru a serving of fried calamari and my baked spaghetti is being dropped on the table. My wife doesn't understand, because she's never worked in a restaurant a day in her life- but she is my buffer. Bravo to OP for making a simple request and standing ground when it wasn"t honored.

My opinion on the last story is, that OP is NOT the a-hole. The server got asked nicely to pace the meals, right? 5 minutes is not pacing... A professional waiter would bring the entrees and go his round. Then he /she would go to the table every few minutes, ask if everything is okay ad go on. The next meals should be served when the guests are ready, not when the kitchen made it because the server "forgot" to give the pacing info to the kitchen... I worked as a chef in restaurants and hotels for 13 years now and that should be the standard...

I'm a notorious over-tipper. In my entire 60 years on this planet I have stiffed someone on a tip exactly once. That involved waiting 45 minutes for drinks, then an hour to order, followed by 45 more minutes for the food. When the food was ordered the server pulled up a chair, sat down, and told us about how he was suffering from a hangover, due to being out drinking the night before. He got tipped a whole Nickel. It was a mid-tier restaurant, not a hole in the wall. I didn't know this but despite the fact that I paid for everyone's meal, one of the others with me talked to the manager, and got a voucher for a free meal at a later date. I don't associate with that person anymore.

@@morallyambiguousnet Same. I rarely have servers who do anything other than great jobs and I do my best to not make their jobs any harder than it already is. NTA! I‘m a generous tipper, and I appreciate that serving is a hard exhausting job, but that’s not a reason to be rude. I only ever once didn’t tip, and that was when a server asked for a big tip while bringing the bill. We were about 15 people and we already decided to give him around 20 to 30% of a tip (where we were 10% was mandatory).
And he wasn’t like: „don’t forget that tips are mandatory“ (which would be fine as we were clearly tourists). No, he was like „i was really nice to you, so I deserve a good tip“ we decided to give him 10% exactly.
      Let your actions speak.
I usually tip the customary tips that are expected in the country I‘m visiting + another 5 to 15% depending on the service. In Switzerland, where tipping isn’t mandatory (and where I live) I still always give at least 10%.
In my opinion hairdressers and waiters always deserve a tip. In Switzerland sadly you aren’t allowed to tip in convenience stores, or else I would tip there too. I‘m happy that there are people who do these jobs, which I wouldn’t have the patience for. 😊

I had the unfortunate luck to encounter her a few times and she was a monster though I was shy enough to not ever really been noticed by her. Her dad was one of the big donators to the center and had bullied all the managers and lifeguards into basically letting her do whatever she wanted although he was required to sign a release saying if she ever caused damages to anyone else or herself the center was not responsible in any way but her dad would be. Well, one day she decided to entirely disregard the waterslide rules and try to go down it standing up even after the lifeguard warned her not to several times. Long story short she fell over the side of the side about 20ft to a concrete floor. She survived but broke her spine and both legs which, by what I had heard from others who knew her, ruined her full ride athletics scholarship and basically made her unable to stand without aids and a fair amount of pain. About the last story, as a waitress myself (41 years of service) OP is NOT THE A**HOLE! The server definitely was. She forgot that she was depending on the clientele for her salary. OP was only asking for a very basic and logic service for him and his guests. It was absolutely normal to have their drinks first, than the appetizers, followed by maybe another round of drinks and than the entries. A good waiter (waitress) is supposed to sell and works for the house. He/she focuses on the satisfaction of the customers so they will be happy and even eager to come back. They might not be thrilled by the food but they will remember that they were treated like friends at the place.

The UK doesn't issue duplicate medals and in the inheritance story the medals were given to a relative, the cousin should have tried to buy them from 'Clive' if all he wanted was money. The cousin had no more right to them legally than 'Clive'. My nephew will inherit his Great Grandad's and Great Great Grandad's medals when he's older because he is the only male heir. If you have an immediate relative who never claimed their medal you can apply for it as it will still be with the office that deals with this. However it may be that somebody chose not to get their medal for personal reasons. So just for my own understanding are you saying in the US that they would issue duplicate medals in this instance? Then how do medals have a resale value?

@@shendisackett With a relatives DD-214 form, which is our discharge paperwork, listing condition of discharge, awards, etc, we can request they be replaced. Either ourselves or a direct family member.
So if they are lost, damaged, stolen, etc we can have them replaced. The resale value comes from them being originals, issued during which ever conflict, some are worth a good bit, others are so common that they aren't worth much.
Had to have mine, my late fiancée's and grandfathers replaced a few years ago because of a house fire. Obviously they aren't the originals, but are no less important to me. Thankfully my other relatives awards weren't at my new house yet at that point.

@@sparkplug1018 that is interesting thank you. So I decided to look into it further our end as we normally have similar arrangements to the US and I had been given partially wrong information. So to correct what I wrote you can apply for replacement medals if the originals are stolen or destroyed. You have to provide evidence for this, like a police report or insurance claim, unfortunately for the OP in the story the medals weren't stolen so there's nothing they can do, except try to track them down and buy them back. The confusion with the information I was given came about because of my Great Grandad's medal, we have his medal for the Great War as WW1 was originally known, these are quite rare now, and the MOD will not replace medals from before 1920. I was referring to medals in general the person I asked thought I meant that particular medal. My Grandad lived to a very old age and he only showed me his war medals and talked about some of the things he'd seen in WW2 a month before he died. After it ended he was on a crew returning a carrier to the US and they stopped at many of the countries involved in the war so he saw things like the aftermath of Hiroshima.

I mean , not say anything to HIM. I heard about since I was a manager. It just seemed strange. He very well could have had some kind of medical condition for all we knew.

Last story: this is honestly ridiculous. I’ve worked in MANY restaurants and in tons where people liked to eat slowly and we had to hold food sometimes before sending it to the kitchen, or hold the food under a hot plate until the table was ready to be served. This is in no way a crazy request, and OP is not a Karen for expecting that it be respected and to not get cold food when their food finally does come. I would have never imagined speaking to a table that way, entitled or not.

First story: a friend of mine, who admits to having a slight weight problem, injured his back some time ago. While shopping at a local Walmart, he needed a motorized cart while having a bad day with his back. An employee had denied him the use of the cart as he was “too young to has serious issues.” My friend insisted the employee accompany him while shopping. Surprisingly, the employee complied. He got to witness my friend holding himself up with a normal shopping cart while having several extremely painful bouts of pain. When the employee asked what was wrong, my friend replied “I needed that cart because of my back issues.” At that point a manager showed up asking why the employee was following my friend around. After a brief explanation, the manager called for a motorized cart and told off the employee for refusing my friend’s use of the cart in the first place. This was a few years ago and my friend has managed his weight and his back issues better since then.

I had a cousin who was a pack rat. Made me realize that she went thru some serious trauma when her husband died of cancer. When my dad's oldest sibling, my cousin's mom died. Several members of the family were supposed to inherit things from my aunt. My cousin refused to give up the items. Including a few things that were to go to her brother's oldest daughter. I am hoping that my male cousin's daughter got the items after his sister died. I also believe that she took stuff from his house when he died as a claim that supposedly it was to go to her.

Man, that server in the last story. 11/5 AH score for her. She only came up all bubbly for the check because she wanted to weasel a good tip out of OP. She ruined any chance of any tip at all before the meals were served, by refusing to honor a singular, simple request. I hope she got fired.

Consignment store wheelchair story: Good grief! I live in an area where you can't swing a cat without hitting a flea market/antique store. None of them provide wheelchairs or mobility scooters and some are definitely big enough you'd want one. But it's usually not too hard to find a booth with canes/walkers/rollators/wheelchairs for sale either. But unless someone is OBVIOUSLY just messing around, it's usually safe to assume they need whatever mobility aid they are using.
Slapping the head lifeguard story: Personally, I think the police should have been called. Grandma's gotten away with this type of behavior too many time to ONLY kick her out.
Cracked bumper story: When the jerk pulled out and wasn't paying attention is when OP should have pulled out his phone and started taking pictures.
Server story: I understand that in the US servers are paid less than minimum wage due to tips. But tips are not mandatory either and, in my opinion, if you want a tip, let alone a good tip, the service needs to be adequate at a minimum. Give me attitude and/or poor service and I'll leave a tip commensurate with the attitude/service. And that sometimes means no tip.

Hello story number two, I went to a waterpark in the Poconos during a religious holiday. I won’t say which one. And the adult males and the teenage males that came to enjoy the waterpark and the hotel refuse to listen to the females that worked in the building anywhere so the whole weekend I could not use the adult hot tub because it was full of fathers with their infant babies and no swimmy’s on. I swear the water smelled like my kids diaper bag when he was six months old it was disgusting and every time one of the female employees went to tell the fathers they can’t have the babies in the hot tub they ignored her , so she would have to go get a male employee. At one point one of the fathers started screaming at the female employee in a language I did not understand. She simply took her walkie-talkie off her shoulder and push the button, and I guess she was letting the boss hear what this person was saying , three employees and two policeman came in and took out like 30 people. It was hysterical and wonderful at the same time. Unfortunately, we were scheduled to go again, but then Cove it happened. I have not been back cents. Thank you for letting me rant.

that last one def in't the karen for not wanting their food to just sit on the table while they eat the apps the wait staff were unprofessional and not smart to not understand a simple request then to turn around and act like they are ruining their lives for wanting what they ordered and only acting polite when it's time to pay cause they want a tip

Wtf is wrong with the waiter in the last story? Were they working there as punishment? Was their family held hostage and they were blackmailed into working there?
Cannot follow simple instructions, is rude to the customers, I wonder how long they'd be able to hold down that job, because such behaviour is repelling af, I guess only desperate customer / customer without any other dining out options would come back to the place they were treated like that by a server, whose job is to ensure the customers have nice experience and dine there again.

The water park guard should definitely have called the police. I wonder how many times she’s done this to other employees, and gotten away with it without being arrested. Or at least, then her granddaughter could’ve learned a lesson. Keep your freaking hands to yourself or land up getting arrested just like grandma.

Last story: OP was definitely NTA. Her request was honestly simple and was made known up front. People are so quick to throw around the karen title these days, forgetting that people are allowed to make LEGITIMATE complaints.
If the complaint is legit its NOT being a karen. People should he allowed to stand up for themselves without being accused of being Karens.
Its the same thing now adays as the term bridezilla being over used. Its seems that if people, ESPECIALLY women dont allow themselves to be walked all over and meek submissive little girls, then we get called Karens, bridezillas, or both

Last story not the a.hole : I used to work in a restaurant and they take the most of the orders at the same time ....appetizer + salad + entrees ....except for the desert.
    > They'll serve a salad after you finish the appetizer.
    > They will serve the Entrees after you done and the table was cleared and ready for the Entrees.

  • @niceebony
    @niceebony ปีที่แล้ว +1

For the last story, the only demand that started this whole fiasco was to wait on bringing the entrees out. Simple request. Most times there isn't any room on the table to have both appetizers and entrees for everyone, so you end up scooping things to one plate or feeling rushed to finish. The server could have easily waited to put the entree orders in and all would have went smooth. So rushed it.

The server started off with the attitude by deliberately ignoring their request and harassing them throughout their meal then ignoring them when they were ready to eat. they were unprofessional and seemed to have a chip on their shoulder long before OP showed up. My guess is that server probably isn't working there anymore. OP is definitely not he asshole here.

the story about inheritance kind of hit home for me. My Dad who had been divorced for 7 years at the time of his passing did not have a new will made since my parents split. Before me or my sister were up to going to his place my cousins had already let them self's in and rummaged threw his stuff for things they wanted. My Dad was not wealthy or much into planning, he did not renew his life insurance after the divorce and since there was no new will it reverted to a will he had before he was married so everything was to go to my aunt, My mother fought this to make sure that me and my sister would get it ad won, but not before the legal battle ate threw what little my father had. So when all was said and done there was $5000 to split between me and my sister and since she at the time owed me around $5000 i got her half of the money, and we went threw and collected a few mementos. Then there was a fight between aunt, and uncle over other items and they never spoke to each other again shortly after that.

Story 2, waterslide Karen: I hope that the family didn't get a refund, grandma got a permanent ban, and shame that she didn't some nice shiny new wrist bracelets from the local cops.
Story 3: The entitled aunt still has one option for work, hint it's one of the oldest professions in the world and she only needs to be able to open her mouth or spread her legs to do it.
Last story: OP is not the ahole as they hade asked the server to please pace the meal, so the server should have just checked in with the table once they were halfway through the apps to see if they wanted the entrees started to be ready for about when they would be done with the apps. Is this a bit extra work, yes, but a bit extra work with a good attitude will often garner you a nice tip. But that server decided they didn't want to do anything more then the bare minimum for OP's table and even tended to every other table as much as possible before going anywhere near OP's table.
If I was OP in this case I would asked the manager to put our meals in to go boxes so we can go home and eat as that server was now refusing to even come near our table, and was acting more like a spoiled bratty 5 year old then what a professional should be acting like. Then the next day I'd call and speak with the owner about that server. I'd say that I am not looking to get them fired, but at the very least they need a good lesson in professionalism, because in service work you will always encounter groups that have a few extra requests then other groups, this is part of the job, and as long as the requests are reasonable then there should be no issue with doing them.
In my many years of eating out at various places all over the country, the servers have always asked if we were done or close to done with the appetizers and would like our meals. So OP is not the a$$hole, that server is just a lazy brat.

In the last story it was perfectly fine to ask if they could have their main dish later. If for some reason it can't be done (I wouldn't know why if anything it gives the kitchen more time) then they should be told so immediately. If the waitress tells that it's ok but then doesn't deliver on it it's her fault.
