What did you think of the new game 'Name That Swing'?

I like it. Baseball, after all, is a fun game which boys (or girls) love to play as a kid. You can outgrow playing the game of baseball as you get older and the parts of your body start aching. But you can NEVER outgrow the fun of playing games. “Name That Swing” has the fun game element that we all love.

the only reason ohtani speaks through ippei all the time instead of just using english is cause he wants to communicate directly to his Japanese fans.

That too. But also there are a lot of words used in the locker room that are inappropriate in interviews. Sometimes foreign players don’t know which words those are and could potentially get in trouble for using them in public.

@@mirikaku5811 I mean, I'm sure it's an honest mistake. But I would say the ROTY speech was even more impressive, given the fact that he had only been in America for a year! Everyone in the media has completely refused to acknowledge his first speech!

@@mikayocc This might just be me… But I actually liked the ROTY one a little better in a way, for me, being from Europe, I think Shohei had more neutral pronunciation then, where as now, I detect a bit more tongue-rolling American sound, which I’m not sure its him…
And again, Shohei did this to please all the request to appeal more to those who insist on him saying something in English in public. He looked like he just wanted to have it over with..😂
(The smile and the joke, in the end of the ROTY speech was more sincere..)

Shohei sometimes lowered his gaze to a paper on the podium but it wasn't cheat sheet but just draught. His ability of speaking English has been advancing.
From the rough Linguistics POV, romance languages for instance are a family of Indo-European languages, comprise Italian and Spanish etc. Italian speaker can rather easily speak Spanish. English and Germany are brothers, too. Nevertheless Japonic languages have no similar one on the globe coz the country were geographically isolated. Thus it's comparatively hard for Japanese to learn and master English and vice versa.
I think Shohei has made impossible possible again outside his baseball. No more S.A.S.!!
    Sorry for long message.

Happy birthday week, Ben. Always found it strange how baseball's free agency process is so long and drawn out, as compared with the other sports. Makes you wonder if there should be a player signing deadline by MLB for players to sign with their chosen team.

Regarding Snell, although he is a 2x cy young winner, if you look at the years he is not, he is not elite and hurt. No way any team will give him 9 years, he may have 3 good years left on the very fatigue arm.

If you think FA market is manipulated, there’s no reason for FA market to exist, Ben. I agree with most of points you make most of the times, but this one insinuates “conspiracy” of some kind and you, as a responsible baseball journalist should NOT utter such a thing unless you have concrete substance behind your assertion.

@@FlippinBatsPod I understand where you are coming from. But think about this that THE STRENGTH of a journalist only comes from unbiased & insightful eye. If a qualifying offer is tied to a draft pick, that’s the mechanism MLB chose, not just owner’s choice. From the minute a journalist starts calling it “excuse” solely coming from a player’s point of view, he/she is biased tilted toward players, thus forfeiting to be a good baseball journalist. After all, you are the first journalist who shouted out Shohei Ohtani BEFORE 2021 season, which proves to me that you have a great insight into the game of baseball. As a Japanese who lives in this country, I have a HUGE respect for you as a journalist. I hope that you will go beyond “players union mentality” so that you will be truly THE BEST BASEBALL JOURNALIST !

As he said that he came to MLB to play baseball. I am sure he does not care whether he is THE FACE of baseball or not. It is US media who are putting such “label” on athletes as like GOAT. He is a sociable and friendly guy. So, he does talk to his teammates in English, although his English is broken. But when it comes to interviews, he prefers to use an interpreter, just like Inchiro, only because he wants to make sure that the depth of his thoughts are well-understood. This only shows that he is a sincere guy and takes his role as an elite baseball player seriously.
