Pitchers are governed by the pitch count. Usually around 100. If you can get 27 outs with 100 or 110 pitched, and you're pitching well, you can get a complete game. Shohei averages about 6 innings per start, with the MLB average about 5. I think he threw 111 pitches yesterday. Complete games are fairly rare nowadays, with more concern for long term arm health than in the olden days. Complete game shutouts are even rarer. Complete game shutout one hitters even rarer still.

    • @sneersh9107
      @sneersh9107 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

It's not just more concern about arm health, pitchers are getting hurt more because they're throwing harder and their bodies simply give out. We're pushing the limits of what's physically possible these days with how hard guys throw. That's also another reason pitch counts were higher in the past, you can throw more pitches if you're not exerting yourself as much with every pitch.

Pitchers like Shohei who strike out a lot of guys tend to throw a lot of pitches per inning, which means their pitch counts usually get too high for them to be able to pitch 9 innings. Typically the manager takes out a starting pitcher after 100 pitches or so, which means you have to average less than 13 pitches per inning in order to have fewer than 100 pitches thrown before the 9th inning. If you have more the manager will typically take you out.

The light attendance is most likely due to the game the night before being posponed because of weather, which is why they played a double-header the next day. You hit the nail right on the head! Ohtani has had some injuries in the recent past so he has been given a short leash on the pitching side of things. He typically doesn't pitch more than 6 innings. Which most pitchers really don't anymore. That said, in this game, if you noticed his pitch count in the 9th inning, he had just got to 100 pitches so he was very efficient with the amount of pitches he needed to get to the end of the game so, when you're pitching a 1 hit shutout and you haven't thrown a lot of pitches... you've earned your 9th inning.

Complete games for pitchers are very rare nowadays. Shutouts (a complete game allowing zero runs) is even more rare. It requires throwing a lot of pitches , and teams are now more aware of how taxing that can be to a pitcher in the long run.
Considering how long MLB contracts have gotten, it makes financial sense to keep their pitch counts as low as possible.

Complete game shutouts used to be the norm for top pitchers, but they've become very rare. I think part of the reason Ohtani was allowed to finish game 1 is that it was a double header and that performance allowed the Angels to preserve their bullpen for game 2.

It's just so difficult to explain what an aberration Ohtani is. People can compare him to Babe Ruth from 100 years ago, but the level of competition in the 1920's was nowhere near what it is today. Shohei may very well be the greatest player in baseball history in terms of peak talent (we'll have to see what his longevity ends up being like). What he is doing, especially these past 3 years, is astounding. To the point that 5 years ago, no one around baseball would have thought what we are seeing is even possible.

I’m sure someone has already explained but yes, in baseball complete games are rare. Mainly for the pitchers health, the general watermark for pitchers is to stay around 100 pitches, so you have to pitch a GEM to even get to the 8th inning still under 100 pitches, let alone the 9th inning still under 100 pitches. Also in baseball, the bullpen (the pitchers who come in after the starter), are a tool to be used against certain batters and situations. So once your starter gets you through most of the game, your relievers and your closer can throw a different game plan to the other team. Lastly, MLB hitters get WAYYY better against pitchers on their third time through the lineup, even good pitchers start to get hit or fall apart once they face the lineup 4 or 5 times. Suffice to say, a complete game in baseball nowadays is a real feat that defies all logistics of baseball strategy and load management. And a “shutout” is the term for a complete game where you give up no runs.

A few weeks ago against my White Sox he hit 2 home runs and struck out 10. Amazing. Pitchers throwing complete games is becoming more and more rare. The game has been restructured to maximize the life of the pitchers. They're usually on very strict pitch counts and will be pulled once that is reached. Obviously no-hitters or perfect games would be less likely, as well as shutouts.

Originally Shohei was scheduled to start game 1 of LAA vs Toronto but Phil Nevin(manager) opted shohei to pitch game 1 of the double header as if he will be pitching Toronto Game 1 he might not be in optimal condition to pitch as they will be doing a double header where he will DH then jump on to a plane for a series in toronto the following day.

I remember watching the second home run. It's pretty common for hitters to take their timeout after they get to 2 strikes, but Shohei took his when it was went 3-1. I remember looking to my friend and saying "he's taking a timeout because he knows Manning doesn't want to walk him, and he knows this is his best chance at hitting another home run". And sure enough!

Hate to say it because Ohtani is a once in a lifetime player but this isn;t actually the first time this has happened, "Rick Wise" in his June 23, 1971 start threw a no hitter and homering twice.

I think he was a 2 way player as well. Really weird thing is Buchai was born in the 1990s and so was Shohei. Art proving life or is that life proving art?

I bet there has never been another MLB player that has hit a home run in one country and then the very next at-bat hit another home run in another country. Shohei did that when he homered in Detroit and then homered in Toronto the next day in the next at bat.

Ohtani is the best to ever play the game. Not only is he a superstar pitcher _and_ batter, I'd bet he'd be great at any position on the field. But I think one day they'll be someone as good or better. Sports science and medicine are so good these days, and only getting better. As a species we're capable of being stronger and faster than our ancestors were. Think about pitting an early era NFL team against a modern one. People continue to push the boundaries of athleticism, and we'll continue to improve as a result.

On your question about pitchers going all 9 - it used to be way, way, way more common. But modern pitching figured out pretty quickly that the number one predictor of injury (other than prior injuries) is pitching longer and more often. So there was a bit of an industry shift.

Also about the crowd, we’ve put together some solid crowds for some games this season, but this game started at 4 pm so basically everyone was at work, a big reason as to why the stadium was empty.

starting pitchers, if doing well in the game ofc, usually are limited to around 100 pitches per outing, except for rookies who are usually capped at around 80, if theres a lot of traffic, a lot of guys reach base, that could mean only 5 innings, when you do very good it could mean a cg sho (complete game shutout)

Throws a complete game 1 hitter hitting up to 99 mph on the radar gun, then plays in the 2nd game a few hrs later and hits 2 home runs. A pitcher is supposed to rest for 4-5 days after pitching just 5 innings never mind a complete game. This guy plays in the 2nd game and hits 2 home runs. He’s the best pitcher and hitter in the league. Crazy
