    This is why I like Captain Pike. Why he’s my favourite Star Trek Captain, he’s extremely brave. He’s seen his future and is terrified of it, but instead of trying to avoid it and run away from it, he faces it and embraces it. He values other lives over his own. It’s what makes him a great Captain

      It also gives his "ending" in The Menagerie that much more meaning? The man's willingly given up his future not only to eventually save the cadets, but to save all sentient life in the universe by acquiring the crystal for Burnham's suit. If anyone's earned the Talosian Retirement Home, it's him.

  • @uggamugga99
    @uggamugga99 3 ปีที่แล้ว +163

    I used to think it was dumb that in the 23rd century this was the best they could do for him after the accident. But after reading about what happens when you're exposed to a lethal dose of radiation, it's amazing that he survived at all. Your DNA is ripped apart by gamma rays so it becomes unusable and you slowly rot since your cells can't replace themselves when they die. He was exposed to so much that his face started to burn when it happened. The doctors would literally have to stitch his DNA back together so his cells could reproduce again or find some way to artificially create new cells.

    • @tuxedotservo
      @tuxedotservo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +50

      Even worse, the small blood vessels (capillaries) rupture/are destroyed, meaning that pain medicine you are given won't work, as it can't travel via the blood to the affected areas.
      It's why death by severe radiation poisoning is one of the most brutal things there is - there's nothing they can do to alleviate the suffering.

    • @mikaelvirji5807
      @mikaelvirji5807 2 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      It's also worth noting he may have put some sort of request/order in his medical file along the lines of "look, if you're gonna save me, don't make it TOO advanced" in light of how easily and thoroughly Airiam was compromised.

  • @jebiniv
    @jebiniv 2 ปีที่แล้ว +49

    Somebody commented below on how he's such a great mix of previous captains in the franchise. It's true. I never thought of it that way. Anson Mount brought so much life to a character who was always "the guy before Kirk", and more importantly, the captain that just didn't sell the show enough, so they needed a second pilot. This fixes a lot of stuff. Now Kirk was the only logical successor to an absolutely amazing captain, who was up there with Picard, Archer Sisko and Janeway.

    Folks pointing out that Pike is holding to Starfleet ideals are right. The last line though shows that even under Klingon values he is a great man. There can be no greater battle then against ones fears. Honor and glory abound when you conquer them.

      The fate of Captain Pike was already sealed in the Original Series episode "The Menagerie" where we see him disfigured and confined to the chair where he could only move around and communicate through a flashing light. However, there is more to his fate that his vision did not show.
      I do not know if the future Captain Pike series will lead all the way to that moment (they would have to re-cast Captain Kirk in order for that to happen), but the original episode is worth seeing. You get to see Pike in his original form, as played by the late Jeffrey Hunter.

    The way this goes for Pike really doesn't make sense. At that point in the future, medical technology will have advanced to such a point that a person can be almost completely rebuilt from a small remaining amount of undamaged tissue. All possible damage that can be done in a plasma explosion and fire, which does not result in death, can be reversed.

    • @Enkijamenk
      @Enkijamenk 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      It's not a plasma fire. It's massive ionizing radiation exposure. Look up Acute Radiation Syndrome, and the deaths of Louis Slotin and Hisachi Ouchi, among others, and happy nightmares. Pike got hit with enough to cause immediate, visible burns, and he was in the open: so there are no undamaged cells in his entire body. The chair is the only thing keeping Pike from literally rotting away as his genetically-damaged cells fail to replicate.

    So if his fate is sealed meaning that no matter what he does, he will meet his end at that point in time.
    Okay well if that´s the case he has just become the ultimate good luck charm.
    He can basically do WHATEVER he wants, because he now knows with certainty, that he will survive unharmed until that precise moment in time.
    Heck declare war against the Klingons everyone, and have him at the head of the battle in his own ship, he will succeed and he won´t die.
    That´s the thing about sealed fates, once you know the precise moment of your death and know nothing you can do will alter it, well you can basically do whatever you want because you know you won´t die.
    Pretty weak writing there... though on the other hand that´s to be expected from STD.

    • @WarGrowlmon18
      @WarGrowlmon18 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Part of the reason that they did this is because this IS his ultimate fate: it's long established Star Trek canon. He's left horribly mutilated in a wheelchair, but Spock arranges for him to live on Talos IV with those telepathic aliens that had helped to restore Spock's memories and mind.

    • @Erikjust
      @Erikjust 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WarGrowlmon18 That is true.
      However the way they have shown it, that this is his fate and nothing he does will change it, he won´t die, he won´t get horribly injured or anything.
      Well as i said if i where shown something like that i would more less say cool give me the hardest combat missions available i KNOW i will survive.
      Also people will flock around me, because i just became the ultimate good luck charm, because once again whatever i do i won´t die or get injured beyond recovery until that point in time.
      That is why this scene is so bad, because of the implications of it.
      How would i improve it? Basically take Beast Wars code of a hero, where Dinobot dies.
      He has seen the future and tis implied he saw his own fate, but doesn´t know if it can be changed or not, then he finds out it can the future isn´t set in stone.
      Oh suddenly he got a choice, since the future can be changed maybe his fate can be changed equally.
      However when Megatron attacks the valley where the pre-historic humans are living, Dinobot chooses to embrace the future he has seen and sacrifices his own life to defeat megatron and save the humans.
      Do it a bit like that here too, have Pike see alot of future events including him ending up in a wheel chair.
      Have the Klingon priest neither confirm or deny that the future is set in place, though maybe say something like "To rely on visions of the future is to be locked down their path."
      Then we have one of the situations Pike saw in the crystal maybe a battle or an away mission that went wrong.
      Then suddenly something unexpected happens, maybe a relay gave out postponing the mission by a few minuets and suddenly the mission actually succeeded.
      Oh so the future can be changed, Pike finds out that he doesn´t have to end up in that wheelchair.
      then come the final where Pike is called on the inspection tour, and the radiation leak happens right up until that moment Pike had the choice, he could choose simply to not intervene.
      Something that would perfectly understandably, as a high ranking officer he isn´t expected to risk his own life to save the cadets, the ship has personnel in charge of doing just that.
      If they can´t do their job that is THEIR fault not his, if the cadets die as a result of their failing the personnel would be in trouble not Pike.
      There would be no blemish on his records, he would be able to continue with his life and career without ever having to end up in that wheelchair.
      Yet like Dinobot he finds that he has no choice at all, sure he could leave the cadets to their fate, but that would be a cowards way out and something he wouldn´t be able to live with.
      So he chooses to do what he did the vision and save the students and ending up in the wheelchair.
      That would in my mind be a better way to do it, instead of saying like the current show did, well this is your future no matter what you do you will end up here, deal with it.
