Hi Joe, for many many years I worked as a Perkins field engineer covering the South East, the predecessor to the 6354.1 was the P6, this had a timing chain and not an idler gear.
The 6354.2 was probably the most commonly used of of the 6 cylinder range, the 6354.3 was fitted with a turbocharger and Bosch fuel injection, the 6354.4 came as normally aspirated or turbo-inter cooled.
As the 6 cylinder range had some many applications worldwide, the variants where almost endless.
Still enjoyed working on Gardeners, there was just something about working on a hand built engine.

The P6 had a bad habit of kicking over backwards then revving up until destruction , ok in a truck you could stall it , in a compressor there was little to do except move to a safe distance .

I've always been more comfortable with gear train timing drives, than chains or belts, I often wondered why Gardner used chain drive. As far as I'm aware all certified aviation piston engines have gear driven timing, food for thought.

    Perkins 354 engines are between 15.5 to 16.1 compression ratio I thought, depending on model/Country. I have a dot 4 T6, and its 15.5-1

Thanks for the video, oddly it always seems to be journal big end three or four that picks up a bearing on the 354, that's the fourth one I've seen....

Hi Joe nice engine the Perkins 6.354 different application to the Gardners. Both good old British engineering.

    Interesting that it's a horizontal engine,and marinised?

It is actually a Perkins HT6354. ( Horizontal Turbocharged 6354)
The 6354 was a very popular engine used in many different applications, but in my view always sounded harsh and like a galvanised bucket full of rusty bolts rattling around.

Not if the injection pumps are set up properly

These must be the most run away engines ever made because of the horizontal pumps. Driveseals go on the pump shaft and fill the sump with diesel. Done hundreds of them.

Send return injector pump fuel back to tank instead of the fuel filter esp on hyd gov DPA injector pumps and the engines are better off for it.

Bet that knocked a bit before finally sitting down. Nice to see in back in full voice though. I assume the 6354 is 6 cylinder 354 cubic inches displacement?

I don't think there's any comparing the two motors you talked about ,, I came across the 6-354 in the early 70's in Massy Ferguson cane harvesters , I guess Perkins was the biggest little motor that would fit in the harvester ,, no where near big enough for the job , The seasons were only 5 months of the year and during the second season they needed rebuilding ,, although I knew of one motor in a boat was still going sweet after 12000 hours but it only idled along at 1200 revs , still my favourite motor though Ive driven MF65 tractors with a 4-212 over 20 years old never had a spanner on them .

Not really much of a comparison. Little old Perkins donkey with a Gardner. Be a bit more valid with a 505 or 691 or 0600 0680.
