Nooo to custom paint. It's gorgeous. And retro-mod bikes like this are so much cooler when you can clearly see it an old beast underneath! Spend the effort and money on improving the aerodynamics further!
It looks fine how it is but matte black is always better. I think flashy paint like this one (silver and red) are a bit naff, it's better to go with a flat colour all over.
Only been waiting 3 years, watching GCN, for exactly this, real world TT 2nd hand buy, build and test. Leave the paint job, it's nearly mint, put that money back into speedplay pedals and clips 👍👌🙏
Here I am in 2024 enjoying this rebuild series. I’ve rebuilt a P2 TT bike and recently recently just completed rebuilding a 2009 Cervelo SLC for many of the reasons you mentioned. I wanted an SLC for the uniqueness of the frame at the time and rebuilt it using some upgraded tech. Both projects we so much a labor of love! I enjoyed the creativity in wheel and cockpit selections and was able to put on the drive train, crankset, and steering bars that I wanted! Such a joy to watch as you went through this build! There’s nothing like being able to have the bike that you wanted with all the specs you wanted. Great series! Ride On, Ollie!
Don’t waste time and money by painting that bike. It barely has a mark on it, and it’s unlikely that any affordable repaint would improve upon its appearance. Hey! Maybe you could get THE Daniel Lloyd to autograph it! 😁 Have fun with the rebuild. Cheers!
I'm literally doing this too, was inspired by the cheap bike to super bike build, so far I've spent less than £150 and all I need is a rear mech hanger, bottom bracket and some cables.
you do a run before you put the upgrades and do a run after you put the upgrades on. see how much time you saved from the original build compared to the new build
He would be a fair bit slower on this bike, even optimized. The bike he attempted it on was a proper track bike, running a lighter than normal drivetrain to maximize every watt over an hour.
I really like this niche that Ollie has in GCN where he's really going into TT. It adds nice diversity to the content the other hosts are also adding to
GREAT idea - Tyres - going off Aerocoach's tyre rolling resistance study, (and avoiding the AMAZING but expensive and delicate Vittoria Corsa Speeds), I've just ordered Pirelli P Zero Velo TTs. GP5000s for training. Interested to see what you do with the chainring. I can't do your watts by miles, so I'm wondering whether to upgrade my 50t just for efficiency. Also keen to see whos cockpit you go with for higher hands. Good luck!
Repainting would be sacrilege, unless you strip it to bare metal to save weight.. :-) Going one-by was the first thing that came to my mind. Curious about the brakes you'll pick, the TriRig's cost a fair bit in which case you might as well pick their cockpit as well. ;-)
I actually built my own TT bike with that frame years ago. My frame was a 2008 p2 grey ceramic coating instead of paint. I even won some triathlons with it. I love that bike. Gave me a love for building and maintaining my own bike. Snagged a 2010 Black SRAM red Group as well. Zipp handlebars and Aksum wheels because someone gave those to me. Got the whole bike down to 18lbs. I was pretty proud of it.
So good to see this kind of video Ollie. We need more of this kind of content to normalise not having to go all out on super expensive bikes just to enjoy the sport. Well done mate.
Wheelbuilder disc wheel cover, Tri rig front brake and a used Jet 6 plus front wheel, 1 x 54T SRAM big ring setup, aero coach chain catcher. Cockpit tweaks, done...
One thing you could go through that would be really useful (and doesn't seem to be covered anywhere else really) is how to set your TT bike up for doing Time Trials in the UK. There are regs about bike position and parts you can / can not use, some regs apply to pro's, but for those of us that do UK TT's (under CTT regs) in in-depth look at what you can (and can't) do would be ace.
Little tip when you come to cable routing - i have a P2 and when you have your steer lowered in combination with mechanical shifting (even more when you want to run te cable out of the back of the aerobars) the cable wil not enter the frame in a nice straight way. It wil rub and look terrible. My hack/way around this is to tyrap the to cables together in you frame triangle (just before they’re going in the frame). Good luck on the project!
Great presentation, again, Ollie. I got my Trek Equinox 7 off eBay two years ago for £250 including delivery. It came without wheels, but I got a rear disc (unused, although technically "new other") and a 60mm deep section front wheel off eBay that made the overall price about £700. I lowered my PB on the local 'fast' course to just under 22 minutes. Yes, I know the young hot shots ride sub 20s but I'll be 62 next birthday so I think that's quite reasonable for an old gran'pa. I can't imagine a bike costing 10 times that amount making more than a few seconds faster, so, to quote Ollie, I reckon I got "good bang for my buck". As has already been posted, it would be the most scientific comparison if you could do a before and after upgrade ride.
Ollie is surely anticipating, deep down in his lockdown heart, enjoyable chats about this bike over coffee at the office with Dan, who rode a Cervelo or borrowed one or something like that a long time ago.
Great start to a great concept, Ollie, and a nice natural follow-on to the Merckx hour challenge. I really appreciate the budget constrained ethos in this - we can't all spend our way to greatness. I also appreciated the more subtle and toned down humour. You seem a really dedicated and clever enthusiast and, though you have great wit too, please don't let the gags get in the way of the information. In many walks of life, the funny guy often becomes pigeon-holed...ever and only looked upon as the court jester....and he ends up playing the caricature of himself rather than showing his thoughtful, intelligent, insightful self. On a less profound note (sorry!), please leave that terrific Cervelo paint job just as it is!
I had a wheelbuilder disc cover on a felt 40mm rim back in the day. Was rapid enough. Paired with a HED3 front it was a cheap and effective pair of wheels.
I recently bought an old Giant TCR TT bike that is very similar to that. Ally frame, same teardrop shape, similar stretched out Profile Design cockpit. Old Dura Ace groupset. I'm really looking forward to what you do with the front end as I'm thinking along similar lines. Next year it's going to get me round my first ever ironman (at age 60).
I have a similar frame from this era. What I do with the cable housing coming out from the aero bars, I strap them with the little cable organizer up behind the stem so they don't stick on the sides and glue to the frame. So I guess with this simple trick I save some 2 Watts :-)
Don’t know where to vote, but please don’t paint that bike! P1 is great, so is the S1. The only problem with the frame is it can tear at the seattube, where the seatpost enters the frame. You can flip the seatpost clamp for a more forward position, that’ll probably make you faster. And, I see this very often, the rear tyre is mounted in the wrong direction.
Just do the touch paint job to remove the scotches and keep the original paint job. Concentrate most of the money for improved aerodynamics and drivetrain. For brake pads, get the dual compound Kool Stop Brake pads. They are great for dry and wet weather braking.
I think the biggest limiter with a bike like this is front end stiffness. It doesn't affect aerodynamics, but will reduce handling confidence, and thus slow you down. I upgraded a while ago from a similar aluminum TT bike to a carbon bike for this reason.
Actually the flat back of the tubes isn't just due to UCI, it actually makes aerodynamic sense when you have wind coming in at various angles and not just head-on (which is where a pure airfoil is indeed the most optimal shape).
You could mask off the Cervelo logos and red parts, and spray the grey a satin or matte black to make it look more contemporary. Just practice on another frame first, as bike frames are not that easy to spray. Decent rattle can paint actually works OK with a bit of practice. Best of luck!
can you explain, what is the difference between a "bad bike fit" and just your body not used to 2+hours in an unnatural position getting pounded in the behind by rough roads?
I got a felt b16 frame with a Bontrager xxx tt base base and profile design extension $500, I had Ultegra 10sp group from old bike + zip 404 tubs (sadly no longer with us) fun bike to ride
As a Buckeye fan, that scarlet and gray looks good. As a youTube-bound semi-essential in need of entertainment, put up another 6 videos of other mods and service performed on this bike.
Great vid, Ollie. Looking forward to see how it's going to change. But I'd say keep that paint job. It's retro, it's cool and you'll get a few admiring looks at your local TT.
Brilliant, I've built 4 custom bikes now with some wizzy paint, pearls and colourshift but I think you should leave yours as is. I understand what you are saying about little bits adding up, I picked up a carbon frame for £75, a new seat post clamp and mech hanger cost me.......... £60!! Now get on with it 😁
I have a problem I an on 2 months garden leave, I got a voluntary severance so some seed money. So CRC flogging pinerello Dogma F8S frames for 3k. Well you have to start somewhere , so the cheapest campagnolo disc groupset H11 and cheapest Zipp carbon disc wheels and fiziik seat and bars. Just have to build it now with Sky team decals and maybe a signature 😁😁😁😁😁
Great project! I do something similar at the moment. Got a 2008 Focus Izalco Tria for a good prize. Already changed the cockpit and replaced the rear wheel bearings. It´s fun and I learn a lot about bike repairing. Really looking forward to this bike build!
From the close ups available I would say do 't paint it due to the "budget build". But if you decide to, I would go with either a metallic silver base w/Candy blue or Metallic copper base w/Candy Apple Red. Put the Cervèlo name back on in a slightly lighter metallic base color.
I think you should design a crankset/chain cover. Remember speaking to Mike Burrows the bike designer and he said it was something that no one did but makes a big saving.
Paint: you could add thin black garter lines (2cm) around the tubes at the end of all the red areas to keep the original pattern but tie it in to the GCN colour scheme a little 👍
I just created the GREATEST disc brake protector during the cleaning process. OK, you know those thin flimsy magnetic used on bumper stickers and refrigerators? Well, i bought a sheet 10 inch x 10 inch { 40cm x 40cm) for a couple of bucks =euros=pounds. I used a vitamin bottle for the template for the center hole and made a 2cm slice to slide the axle through. the magnet is just strong enough to adhere to the disc rotor. I just de greased my chain and it worked AWESOMELY.
I propose a partial paint job. Get a rattle can from spray bike and only paint the silver bits. The silver makes the bike look old school! Keep the Cervelo identity but add some "funk" of your own. 👍👍👍 Contact Cole Customs for paint advice 🤘good luck!!!
Fun watching videos like these even when I ride a bike made from 3 vintage bikes that has such an old gear shifting of 2 levers on the top tube I think, still love it tho, it's a Nova btw
Paint design idea: keep red and white parts and just address silver parts of frame with black or black+more red. And of course some GCN tags. Keeping it simple.
Still love my alu quintana roo 2010,even though the frame is now hanging in my shed with alu rot waiting for a respray.... 😉. Bit heavy, but coasted down a hill faster than any road bike 😎
3:22 Quote by Homer Simpson: "I'm not jealous, I'm envious. Jealousy is when you worry someone will take what you have. Envy is wanting what someone else has. What I feel is envy."
That BB may be original...but don't get it wet. Don't ride in the rain, after the rain, splash water from your bidon, or sweat on it. Those Mega-Exos were about like a screen door on a submarine. After the third one I finally gave op and bought an Ultegra BB that's been on for years. 😁
Hey Ollie, Nice ride! I want to see that handmade disc rear wheel you're making! The paint scheme on this bike is already pretty nice, so don't paint, unless you want to get rid of the accented "e" at the top of the seat tube which looks a bit overdone. Whatever paint scheme you choose, make sure it looks good with a gold chain!
I would ‘ Leave The Red Paint ‘ but paint over the exposed aluminum with white paint. Also if you wanted to customize it use some auto body putty to clean up the welding. (Do this before painting) 😆
I bought one like this last year to do the same. Watching closely as I paid 500 quid but got a set of Planet X wheels with it :-) I’ve not been able to get on with so far. Perhaps Ollie and I should go head to head?
Two most important things 1) reduce frontal area - obviously spend on tt bars but check out difference between super expensive and clip on and a decent position 2) aero wheels - channel sponsors won’t like it but some chinese aero wheels will save a fortune and some companies are really decent
Nooo to custom paint. It's gorgeous. And retro-mod bikes like this are so much cooler when you can clearly see it an old beast underneath! Spend the effort and money on improving the aerodynamics further!
+1
I agree. Don't touch that great, original paint Ollie.
It looks fine how it is but matte black is always better. I think flashy paint like this one (silver and red) are a bit naff, it's better to go with a flat colour all over.
+1
Agree. Speed. Just Speed. Only speed.
Only been waiting 3 years, watching GCN, for exactly this, real world TT 2nd hand buy, build and test. Leave the paint job, it's nearly mint, put that money back into speedplay pedals and clips 👍👌🙏
Cervelo from 2009... It will carry the seal of approval of Dan "Test Team" Lloyd then.
But it clearly wasn't one he used, since it doesn't show signs of crashing.
W. S. Did he mention that he rode for the Cervelo test team?😂😂
Here I am in 2024 enjoying this rebuild series. I’ve rebuilt a P2 TT bike and recently recently just completed rebuilding a 2009 Cervelo SLC for many of the reasons you mentioned.
you do a run before you put the upgrades and do a run after you put the upgrades on. see how much time you saved from the original build compared to the new build
Although they could probably justify it under the rules for exercise, GCN presenters aren't recording themselves cycling outside.
Can we make Olli ride the hour attempt a 2nd time on that bike?
Edit: Can you do a ride now and a ride when you are done optimizing?
Yes, it would be great to see a before and after video!
Yeah, that would make sense, but it would but only in "the real world" (after lockdown), airflow being a major factor for TT
It's a shame we won't know if _anything_ Ollie does to this bike matters, as we'll have no base P1 performance to compare it to....
He would be a fair bit slower on this bike, even optimized. The bike he attempted it on was a proper track bike, running a lighter than normal drivetrain to maximize every watt over an hour.
You can only ride the hour record on a track bike.
I really like this niche that Ollie has in GCN where he's really going into TT. It adds nice diversity to the content the other hosts are also adding to
Why not get rid of the other shifter cable and use xshifter or similar?
GREAT idea - Tyres - going off Aerocoach's tyre rolling resistance study, (and avoiding the AMAZING but expensive and delicate Vittoria Corsa Speeds), I've just ordered Pirelli P Zero Velo TTs. I was just looking to buy a TT bike so this would maybe help me to do it on a budget
Absolutely love this sort of content! Definitely NO painting though! Leave it as it is!

12:00 If you custom-paint that bike, I’m gonna burn your hair!
Ride it as it is now, so we could have a baseline to comapre the results to!
Agreed!
Except he can't, not really. In order for a control run, he would need an indoor velodrome, and they are closed.
So good to see this kind of video Ollie. We need more of this kind of content to normalise not having to go all out on super expensive bikes just to enjoy the sport. Well done mate.
I still race a P1!!! Identical to yours.... DO NOT PAINT IT, it's a classic. I repeat DO NOT PAINT IT!!!
I found the clip at the end of Ollie taking off the bottle cage very interesting. Please give a detailed tutorial in part 2. ;D
Wheelbuilder disc wheel cover, Tri rig front brake and a used Jet 6 plus front wheel, 1 x 54T SRAM big ring setup, aero coach chain catcher. Cockpit tweaks, done...

I was so confused to hear you say „p1 meine lieblings Discothek in München” I loved it😂
Ollie im Einser, that's so eighties.
Do you know why he sometimes speaks German?
@@fuchsy4498 maybe because it fits I his sentence 😂

I had a wheelbuilder disc cover on a felt 40mm rim back in the day. Was rapid enough. Paired with a HED3 front it was a cheap and effective pair of wheels.
I did almost exactly the same thing for my TT bike! Although I splashed out on a second 2008 Cervelo P2, complete with 650c wheels, rather than a P1
Thanks Ollie and GCN crew for bringing us information and entertainment during these trying times! Take care.
Finally, a worth while video from GCN; how I’ve longed.
GCN I bought a Bianchi Chrono with carbon Corima disc rear and HED tri=spoke hub for 450GBP last month, Dura Ace 2x9 and TT shifters/aero bars.
I have a similar frame from this era. What I do with the cable housing coming out from the aero bars, I strap them with the little cable organizer up behind the stem so they don't stick on the sides and glue to the frame. So I guess with this simple trick I save some 2 Watts :-)

Nice! I did this recently, but managed to do a newer P3 for a bit less than your budget with some deeper wheels. I love it!
Loved the video and can’t wait to watch the others. Looking at picking up a P1 myself! Manon has experience with custom painting - ask her!
You could mask off the Cervelo logos and red parts, and spray the grey a satin or matte black to make it look more contemporary. Just practice on another frame first, as bike frames are not that easy to spray. Decent rattle can paint actually works OK with a bit of practice. Best of luck!
Oh hell yes. This is the video we've all been waiting for!!!
Looking forward to the next installments. Great project Ollie.
Super excited about this series!!! Truly hoping this build turns out as fast as the super bike to give the rest of us some hope!!!!!! 🤞
Alloy TT bikes from 2005-2010 are great value. I bought a Giant Trinity alloy with ultegra 10 speed with disc wheel and trispoke for £500 on eBay.
From a 2011 Fuji Aloha 2.0, I traded my way to a Cannondale Slice, and bought upgrades along the way.
Really hyped for this series! Thanks for the good content
can you explain, what is the difference between a "bad bike fit" and just your body not used to 2+hours in an unnatural position getting pounded in the behind by rough roads?
One of them solves itself with riding
A good bike fit is a bike fit uncomfortable at first but that makes you fast in the end.
Ollie: "I've never done a custom paint design"
** Tom Last enters the chat **
Get out on it now Ollie on the TT course so we have a before, after and v the superbike! The paint job is spot on - Don't do a John!!
Cervelo designed dropped seat-stays since the early 2000. Ollie is the new original king of aero👑
4:26 how did a night club surpass the mclaren p1 in p1-ness
Looking forward to what’s to come. Been thinking of doing something similar to get in to time trialing but I know nothing about TT bikes.
Great project! I do something similar at the moment. Got a 2008 Focus Izalco Tria for a good prize. Already changed the cockpit and replaced the rear wheel bearings. It´s fun and I learn a lot about bike repairing.
Really looking forward to this bike build!
This is great content and really useful advice. Wouldn't mind if you did more of these for other kinds of bikes.
DO NOT CUSTOM PAINT THE BIKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The current paint scheme is classic and fits the GCN colors. You even said so!
Keep the colour as it is! Put your effort on component upgrading works!
i love this type of video. I'd say keep the original colors, as it is beautiful as is. Spend the paint's money elsewehere.
Custom Paint: YES - Do praying mantis Style
I Just started one Week ago with the EXACT SAME PROJECT. But I got a Canyon SpeedMax AL
Ollie I enjoy your enthusiasm for this project. TT to the level of your smile.
Keep it GCN colours for sure 😁 about to start my own TT project with a Trek Speed Concept. Can't wait 🤙 looking forward to the next video
Love this. :) I'm parting together a Keirin bike myself and just bought my frame off of Ebay!
Looking forward to this series. Give Josh Poertner at Silca a call for some thoughts. Would make a good interview.
Paint: you could add thin black garter lines (2cm) around the tubes at the end of all the red areas to keep the original pattern but tie it in to the GCN colour scheme a little 👍
Cool project! Thanks Ollie :-) Nice shout-out for 'P1' too. Just down the road from me....
Custom paint yes, but no paint per se, just strip the paint and cover the aluminum with lacquer, bare tubes look cool and you save some weight
Looking forward to this series!!!
Love the manic typing. Great video Ollie. Thanks for making my day. Still laughing.
your budget build...is the flagship of my stable. I love my P1
I love watching this series its brilliant
Paint design idea: keep red and white parts and just address silver parts of frame with black or black+more red. And of course some GCN tags. Keeping it simple.
custom paint it by changing the silver to black so that it will match the new gcn kit
Love the project! Made me try to build one too
That BB may be original...but don't get it wet. Don't ride in the rain, after the rain, splash water from your bidon, or sweat on it. Those Mega-Exos were about like a screen door on a submarine. After the third one I finally gave op and bought an Ultegra BB that's been on for years. 😁
Other than the cockpit are, you should look to aero chainrings like vision did in the past, or cover the holes with tape to make it cheap.
Giant Trinity Adv. Brand new. Job done.
It's a nice paint job, my R2 Cervelo is the same shade of red, but come on. Screw the budget, give it a custom one!
Perfect I really Like youre ideas!
I'm very curious about the DIY disc wheel...!!
Also make a box behind the seat post, sort of like the shiv has
I bought one like this last year to do the same. Watching closely as I paid 500 quid but got a set of Planet X wheels with it :-) I’ve not been able to get on with so far. Perhaps Ollie and I should go head to head?
Brilliant. Looking forward to this. Thanks Ollie 👍
the color is nice i think ;) and good job for the wheel ollie
Two most important things
1) reduce frontal area - obviously spend on tt bars but check out difference between super expensive and clip on and a decent position
2) aero wheels - channel sponsors won’t like it but some chinese aero wheels will save a fortune and some companies are really decent
A couple of ideas could be to convert it to 1x and make a ghetto disc wheel (see gmbn’s video on aero mountainbikes or search for cartboard fiber)
