    Coolant temperatures:
    The gasoline engines from around 2000-2010 work at 90C idle up to about 100C in normal driving, up to 115C under hard acceleration or in slow traffic hot summer day. Thermostat starts to open at 90C and is fully open at 95C. Radiator fan starts spinning at 115C. Note that fan usually will also spin if A/C is on.
    On a cold engine start, the gauge reaches the middle position after the coolant has reached about 80C. The gauge stays in the middle without moving for a coolant temp range from about 80C to 120C. Actually, on many cars the gauge will always sit slightly to the left of the middle - this is perfectly normal.
    Coolant temperature sensor failure: usually the needle will jump at hot (red) at cold engine start, or will climb with 'jumps' as the engine warms up. Always inspect wires/connector at the sensor.
    Cars made after 2010 have different thermostat temperatures, often times the thermostat is also electrically activated.
    On cars made from 2000-2010 when starting the car with cold engine, the hose gets hot near the radiator only after the thermostat opens - 5-10 minutes after the temperature gauge arrives in the middle.
    On cars made after 2010 the hose at the radiator may get warm shortly after cold car start, well before the thermostat starts to open (different system, thermostat opens also electrically at different coolant temperatures). what if the gauge is on the middle and vadis shows 105C and fan is not starting shows ets with this temp has 250 ohms . My Gauge never went to red zone and build up pressure kills my radiator. and i dont have blown head gasket

    • @Peppermint1
      @Peppermint1  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Tomasz, does that fan start spinning as the temperature goes higher than 105C ? It should start spinning around this temp (plus minus). There are also a few things too look at. First, remove the coolant reservoir cap, at look at the green gasket. This gasket can go bad after many years and leak pressure. The reservoir should keep a certain pressure inside. May try replacing or flipping the gasket on the other side. Also look at the small return hose at the top of the reservoir, it has a clamp on it, make sure it's tight (may crush it a little with the pliers to be sure). And easy way to test the radiator fan, is turn on the A/C in warm summer days: the fan should start spinning at low speed (it has two speeds). I recommend also replacing the thermostat after 10-12 years, and flushing the system with Prestone like here th-cam.com/video/69ymGTqHxRw/w-d-xo.html And keep in touch on forums such as www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=9

    • @Peppermint1
      @Peppermint1  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think it's a good idea to run a cooler thermostat especially on an engine that's going to be raced. The stat on these Volvo starts opening at 90C and it's fully open at around 95C. The radiator fan will kick in only after 105C, so the engine should have no problems dealing with coolant temps around 100c even when it's being raced, as long as it has the proper coolant and the spark plugs are in good condition. These engines have very strong head gaskets, it's very rare for a hg to fail, only when the coolant has been neglected for very long time, or when someone used tap water (of flushed with tap water) which will cause limestone deposits and reduce the engine cooling. The problem with modified S60R is the liner cracking usually from higher boost. The 2.3 T5 was actually a stronger engine that could safely take significantly more boost than stock

    Hey,great videos so far, amazing DIY jobs! 👏
    But why you drive your engine without the plastic covers on top?
    Because of the heat for the coils and installation, or some other reason?
    Thha5

    • @Peppermint1
      @Peppermint1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's right, as they get old it helps keeping the coils less hot. Another problem is the plastic of the wires to the coils gets brittle from heat. Also the top cover may accidentally catch and crush one of these wires. Speaking about coils, it is important to inspect the spark plugs for wear - when they wear they overcharge and damage the coils, and have a spare coil in your trunk because often times one will fail all of a sudden - no need to replace all of them, usually only 1 or 2 will fail th-cam.com/video/fnYUQh23p7Q/w-d-xo.html

      The hose gets hot near the radiator after the thermostat opens - this happens a few minutes after the temperature gauge arrives in the middle. The gauge reaches the middle position after the coolant has reached about 80C, while the thermostat opens at around 90C. @@raulzamora8928 The bottom hose gets warm only when the engine reaches about 90c and the thermostat opens. Check the any air in the coolant is properly burped. First, make sure the coolant tank is clean at the bottom (no dark engine oil mixed) and the reservoir cap seal is in good condition. Check the temp needle climbs from cold smoothly and steadily (no jumps). Wait until top hose gets too hot to touch. If still overheats possibly : clogged radiator or even water pump about to seize - if trying to replace the pump, make sure you test it by hand upon removing the timing belt, if the pump spins easily it should still be good.

    My coolant temp rises very very slowly, but the cabin heating works after like 200 meters driven. (to reach “12 o clock temp” it takes like 20 km of driving (1500-2500 rpm, 2.4 gasoline))
    Haven’t checked on the tube you shown yet, but can this be the thermostat?

    • @Peppermint1
      @Peppermint1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's normal to start having some cabin heat quickly, as the coolant starts warming up. But if the needle reaches 12 o'clock only after around 30 minutes driving in warm weather, that is too slow. Even at only 2500 rpm, the needle should be close to vertical after no more than 10 min driving in summer weather. It also matters the engine oil grade: a 10W-30 oil will take longer to warm up compared to a 0W-30 oil
