    Yes, that a pretty decent way to rule out a thermostat issue. I was kind of looking for a good way / tool to measure coolant flow to diagnose if the water pump is bad and not circulating coolant. Currently this is not an issue for me. But it's one component I don't have a tester to know for sure without removing and inspecting.

    • @macfady2181
      @macfady2181 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      If your pump is on its way out, you'll see the temp gauge running hot or overheat.

    • @dnlmachine4287
      @dnlmachine4287 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Try looping the heater inlet and outlet hoses together with clear vinyl hose. Run the engine and watch for flow.
      If you cant easily reach those, look for another small coolant hose you could insert a loop into.

    What happens often on older vehicles is the thermostat works fairly normal except it won't close up completely and thereby causes the engine to never make it to correct operating temperature that the computer is looking for.
    The idle stays fast because it thinks it's still warming up, it runs richer because it thinks it still warming up, and your heat is weak.

    After a new water pump radiator cap and 3 new thermostats, it stayed closed again. Took it out after busting a hole in both upper and lower radiator hoses. Read through 1000s of comments against doing it. Bought myself a week till my new radiator came. After putting it in the old 1 didnt look bad at all. Found a short in a fan wire which made it look like it was working coming on sometimes then off when cooled down a bit. Now they are both running and its super cold. Guess i will reinstall that dam thermostat, just letting yall know whats up. If you have too, do it and figure it out till you get it right again. 💯🔥

    Another indicator is the temperature gauge itself. Stuck open, the temp gauge will take a very long time to rise. Stuck closed, the temp will rise to operating temp normally but then just continue to rise towards the red zone.

    Question: on a 2014 Passat 1.8T (ETKA). Upper radiator hose gets hot and tight (barely compressible). Raditatior has a leak and both the primary and secondary fans are not cycling on. Radiator will be replaced, along with upper and lower coolant hoses, both coolant sensors, thermostat, along with heater core. All was original, and I have the interior taken apart anyway, might as well. Anything that I might be forgetting? Another mechanic said to wait before replacing the fans; suggested that the coolant sensor that sends the signal for the fan to come on may be faulty and to wait before spending the money. The entire fan assembly can be easily replaced without draining the coolant (4 screws and 2 electrical connectors and it lifts up and out). Your thoughts?

    Thank you. I never had these issues with my 99 camry but this 97 camry I am. After ther thermostat failed, I disconnected the fans from the ect to keep the engine cool till I got it fixed but now a week later after getting it fixed, the gasket failed and was leaking bad. Also i never see the gauge go up but i see the white smoke from under the hood first. Had to take the car back and the guy reinstalled a new gasket on the thermostat and did every test he could. Swore the ect was working and the fans were coming on like they should. But even now as I am sitting idling after dropping off my sister, the car started smoking again which immediately had me worried so I bypassed the switch to let the fans run to keep my car cool. The mechanic said if it does it again he will take it to Toyota himself😅 cause he even had the Toyota mechanic on the phone showing him what he was doing.

    I encountered an issue with my Audi A3 the other day.
    Basically I was pulling into a highway after about 20 minutes of driving, and I noticed that the temperature gauge started dropping from 90 degrees and eventually down to 50 degrees... While driving down a highway which makes little sense.
    Granted it was a cold day out at around -8 degrees celsius, but surely the ambient temperature and the draft from the high speeds couldn't possibly be enough to cool down a running engine that much can it?

    Here's a more accurate way of testing if your thermostat is working properly. Verify what the rating is on your thermostat is (195 degrees is common). Connect almost any cheap or expensive OBDII scan tool and take the car out on the highway. If the OBDII coolant temp runs up to the rating on the thermostat and stabilizes there your good to go. In one case I had a dash temp gauge that was reading 3/8 on the gauge (1/2 would be common). I wanted to know what the computer was seeing and it was reading about 10 degrees over the thermostat's rating. Dodge manuals indicate that thermostats are more likely to fail closed rather than open. I bought a NAPA thermostat. When I pulled the old thermostat (I could tell it had never been changed because the way Dodge staked it at the factory) I put both in a pan and brought it to boil. The new thermostat opened exactly at 195 degrees where the old one stayed shut. I put in the new thermostat and low and behold the OBDII coolant temp driving down the road was 195-197, a full 10 degrees cooler than the old thermostat. It's also possible to have a bad coolant temp sensor, in which case changing the thermostat would have no effect. In that case you would want to change the sensor after verifying the thermostat is working properly.

    Great videos, thank you so much!
    I have a question for you. What does it mean when I my heater is not producing any heat, and also I've noticed that the radiator fan does not turn on when the engine gets to temperature?
    I am suspecting a bad heater core but I would like to see if it could be something else first.
    The hoses going to the heater core are hot, and also would like to add that both fans turn on when I turn on the AC.
    - heater not hot, only blows cool air
    - rad fan not turning on
    - fans turn on with AC but not with only the heater
    - heater core hoses do get hot
    - upon starting the vehicle, there is a humming noise coming from the dash board for about 15 seconds
    Thank you

    • @YouWrench

      Thank you! It could be something as simple as the flap motor that controls the distribution between hot and cold into the cabin has broken. Can you hear the motor turning when you switch between full hot to full cold/vice versa? Also, the radiator fan may not kick in when the car reaches operating temurature. Often it takes a quite a bit longer when just idling. It will come on much quicker when driving, but of course you would not notice this (without live diagnostic data at least). If you leave the car idling for long enough though it should come on eventually (will take longer in cold weather too). Just don't expect it to kick in as soon as the temp hits the middle of the gauge. Hope that helps 👍

    Outside temp -10 C. After starting and idling the engine for 14 (!) minutes, the temp gauge finally shows nominal temperature. During that time the pipe gradually builds up to a comfortable level, like 40C. Never really hot. During drive the temperature keeps falling down below nominal temperature, eften after driving for 30 minutes. Suspecting a stuck open.... What do you think?

    • @YouWrench
      @YouWrench  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, a common cause for the engine not getting up to it's full proper working tempurature can often be the thermostat stuck open. This essentially stops the coolant from being held in the engine and getting up to temp (when usually the thermostat would open). Instead, it is constantly circulating and getting coolect by the radiator and fan. Definitely worth replacing the thermostat as the cost is low and the likelihood of success is high - that's the good way around! www.paypal.me/youwrench

    The other way to check Thermostat is open Radiator cap (Cold) & start, when it gets warm enough the coolant will move across because the thermostat opened. - If when you start the engine with it open & the coolant comes out, you could have a blown head gasket !

    Thank for your video my car's temperature gauge is in the stays bared in cold, engine light is on. So if hold the upper hose 5-10 minutes it should suddenly get hot. If the thermostat is stuck open it just gradually get warmer? I just want to make sure before replacing the thermostat that it is not just a bad ECT sensor.

    • @YouWrench
      @YouWrench  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, a very strong indicator that your thermostat is bad is that the top hose will not suddenly go from cold to red hot as the thermostat opens and floods the pipe with hot coolant. If it is stuck open then it will never get as hot as it should, only warm, as the 'cycle' is constantly open so it's always flowing through the radiator and being cooled, in these cases you usually also can't get decent hot air inside the cabin as the coolant is never getting as hot as it should. On many cars a new thermostat is $15-30 and so this is often the best place to start if you suspect it's a likely cause. Other cars they can be very expensive though!! If it's cheap for your car, it's a safe bet if only to rule it out. Hope that helps :-)

    Been fighting my heater in my 96 Ford F150, replaced the heater core thinking it was that because one of the two lines going into it would get warm, but the other did not. Starting to think my thermostat is stuck open. The radiator hose gradually gets warm, not a cold to hot scenario and when I start it with the radiator cap off it instantly starts to push fluid up. Going to replace it next week. Thanks for the info!

    • @YouWrench
      @YouWrench  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, a sign that the upper radiator hose does not go from cold to extremely hot when the thermostat first opens is indeeda thermostat being stuck open. Often with this issue you will also find that the hot air inside the cabin does not get very hot, because the coolant is never getting to full operating temperature, and so it cannot create nice hot air in the cabin via the heater matrix. Hope you get it sorted soon! :-)

    I have a Vivaro Diesel and just had the water pump changed, now I cant get rid of air from the system by bleeding it as it keeps pressurising. I suspect a cylinder head problem solely because the water pump has been changed but there is no white smoke, no sign of moisture on the oil filler cap and no bubbles in the bottle. Could it be just the thermostat? The van heater only blows cold and occasionally warm but not hot. My local garage suspect a cylinder head gasket but won't take the work on because they say removing the injectors is too difficult. They suggest scrapping it but the van is in great condition otherwise. Is it common for air to be ingested into the cooling system even though there is no obvious sign of a leak?

    Good video. From the video I'm presuming my thermostat might be stuck in closed position. I recently had an overheating that has me confused. Warning bell started and I saw my temp gauge pegged at max heat. Pulled over and tried adding coolant by expansion tank (on driver's side) but it barely took any. Temp still pegged. Tried removing the rad cap and saw rad was empty. Explains why motor overheated but why wouldn't the cooling system accept coolant by expansion tank. Any thoughts for me to check?

    • @Reactionreacting
      @Reactionreacting 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sound like u need a new radiator cap. Or there is a leak in the system that has lower pressure than the expansion tank.

  • @adictiveadictive

    So should the top hose go back and forth from cold and hot momentarily? And should the bottom hose stay cool? Bottom is not even warm. Does the radiator cool it that much and that fast?
    I've been using the heater running on full blast to help with keeping the engine from over heating but that only works to a certain extent. Definitely helps but during the day when it's hottest it's risky. Replaced water pump and still overheating. When driving after warming up a bit it takes a while for the gauge to go pass the middle, longer if I have the heater on beforehand. Uphill definitely gets it really close to the red zone and overheating alert. Never actually got all the way in the red zone but super close.
    At idle at stop lights or parked with heater on gradually gets the gauge back down towards or at middle. Thinking my radiator is clogged. Went for a drive long enough to get the gauge needle to go a little past the middle to about 80% and use a infrared thermometer to measure the temp on the radiator and it seems like the far right side top corner was about 10° higher. Any clue?
    Thanks

If it's this easy to determine condition of a thermostat, then why do the Jag dealership charge a lot to check them out and exaggerate the amount of time the diagnostic takes? I'm just curious!

      So they can make money !!😅
      Your dealer would just connect it to their scanner first, they wouldn't do a manual test like this... 😂
      As someone else has posted.. get a Bluetooth OBD2 (OBDII) scanner from your local automotive store and torque pro app and connect to your mobile phone... cost you less than $50
      (Since you want to learn)... potentially save you lots of money.
      Since you already suspect thermostat problems.. NEVER go to a dealership who charge an arm and a leg - go to a local mechanic....(caveat !!) BUT who knows your type of car.

      Thank you! Hard to say, provided it's keeping the engine cool at it's required temperature then in theory it could be ok. That said, if it's doing that due to a possible thermostat fault then don't risk it, just replace it. It's easy and the thermostat is very cheap too (check out the Amazon link in the descriptive text of the video for the best deal!)

      Having a thermostat stuck open will not cause immediate damage, but can cause issues over time if left unfixed. The main thing you will likely see is in the winter the cars heat will not work well (will take forever to heat up, and then will likely not blow as hot when you are driving fast on interstates and highways). That can be annoying but the damage can come overtime since the engine is not getting to the proper operating temperature it was designed to operate at. The car will adjust the air to fuel ratio putting more fuel in (running rich when engine is cold) and can cause carbon build up and more wear on injectors. The engine oil will also not be getting up to the proper temperature and will not lubericate as well as it would at operating temperature. So to sum up, if you live in a warm climate and it is stuck open you will likely not have any issues other than a potential check engine light. If you are in a cold climate your heat will not work as it should, and you will put additional wear on the engine over time.

    And if I'm not mistaken if the thermostat is stuck open your temp gauge will show cooler than normal and your heater will not blow hot as usual and be maybe lukewarm.

    • @YouWrench
      @YouWrench  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, absolutely. If your thermostat is stuck open then the coolant is not held in the engine and will just keep circulating through the radiator, so it will not be able to get up to a proper operating temperature. So when you call for heat inside the cabin there will be no heat (or very little) to give as the coolant is not up to temperature. So if you get a combinaition of no warmth inside the cabin coupled with the temperature gauge always sitting low, then this is a good indicator of a faulty thermostat (open). Hope that helps! :-)

    Please can you advise.... If the thermostat is broken in the open position and the coolant is flowing around the engine & then through the radiator from the start, what, if any, problems could that cause?
    I've heard in much hotter countries (I'm in Zambia in Africa) that some people just remove the thermostat as they don't see the need for it. Thanks

    For example I have fuel pressure testers to measure if the fuel pump is working / pumping pressure obviously if it's 0 psi the fuel pump is not working. But I never seen any flow inline meters to put on water pump inlet pipe or clamp on to measure flow. Is there such a tool ?

    Hi, thanks for the video. I have a 2009 Honda Ody. My problem is that the engine fans won't turn on. I already checked the fuses, replaced both engine coolant temp sensors and both relays. On the dashboard, the indicator is at zero when the engine is cold, when it starts to warm up it goes up to the middle, but it never goes beyond there. But using a little bluethoot scanner I see the temperature go up to 210 F and even higher. But the fans don't turn on. When I put a paper clip in place of the relays, the fans work and the temperature returns to a normal temperature (170 F) on the bluetooth scanner, but on the dash it is always in the middle. Why won't the fans turn on if I change the relays and sensors, the fans are working and not damaged. Do you think I need to replace the thermostat as well?

    I replaced my thermostat last year in my 2004 Pontiac Grand Am. Now thats its winter of course im having heat issues again. Im trying to differentiate between a thermostat issue and a clogged heater core. I get no heat from the thermostat until i get on the highway, even if its on full blast. Even then when im on the highway it will cooldown if i start slowing down. Then the engine starts to overheat until something kinda pops and then lets the heat come through to the cabin again and then my engine temperature drastically shoots down. Is it likely my thermostat needs replacing again? Or does it sound more like tthe heater core? Ty

    Thanks for this video just what I need. Couple questions:
    - would a closed thermostat still provide heat and cool air through the auxiliary heater? No only is my car overheating, I do not get aux heat until I'm accelerating.
    - can a thermostat partially fail ? I.e not open all the way, only partially therefore restricting/slowing coolant flow, causing intermittent engine overheat?
    Thanks and sorry for the long questions

    • @DevonBbrown
      @DevonBbrown 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Check your coolant level. Typically when you only get heat while on the gas, your coolant level is low

    • @YouWrench
      @YouWrench  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Indeed, check your coolant level first of all. Assuming that's good... A closed thermostat would typically not provide the heat to the heater core in the cabin. So yes, if you are overheating and no warm air inside this would point towards a closed (stuck) thermostat). Yes, they can partially fail which can give strange symtoms. With your symtoms it would be worth changing out the thermostat because they are usually fairly cheap.

    Could a cold lower hose not also be indicative of a broken thermostat as it's not opening when reaching temp and not circulating coolant through the whole system?

  • @Tactiquesmarketingsd-portfolio

    some systems are apparently operating in reverse ? it circulates in the lower part of the radiator, then go up to the radiator cap then go through the engine then to the thermostat and lopps like that has long as engine is too hot. How do we know if it's a reverse system if we don't have access to the manufacturer manual ?

  • @sfitch14

    Is it possible for the thermostat to open but not close completely making it so that the temperature does not get to normal operating temperature? ie. ~160 vs. 195 degrees

  • @devinmccloud
    @devinmccloud ปีที่แล้ว +1

    There is another issue that happens every 10 years on my truck. Air builds up in the top hose and stops the heater from working in the cab. Only cold air comes out of the vents. Each time this happens I loosen the over fill tank cap and burp the top radiator hose while the engine is running. By decompressing the top hose over and over you will see the over fill tank coolant level move up and down. Once the air is removed, heat in the cab will be restored. Just like hot water boilers in a home, air in a system causes no coolant to reach the heater core fins.

      If this was happening, would it also cause the heat gauge to start to rise and get hotter? Just trying to key doen exactly what the action and reactions are and this made me ponder that haha

  • @Malakai869

    Can a bad water pump cause this? And what if this happens but once I drive a few blocks and the gauge it goes back to the middle and rises again slowly in idle or as time goes on

    • @YouWrench
      @YouWrench  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there! It depends on your exact symtoms. This test in the video is specific to the thermostat and will help you get a good idea of whether or not your thermostat is working correctly without having to remove it. But yes a water pump that's on its way out absolutely can cause strange heating issues, as can other things such as the radiator cap (depending on system). It tends to be a process of elimination, but the thermostat is usually a good place to start to rule it in or out. Hope that helps!
