We’ve all seen the gold, galleons or whatever you like to call that massive pile of money in Harry’s vault, best displayed in the first movie(sorry for the book over movie crew but the imagery really leaves a memorable picture) and straight away many of us are thinking, where did that come from? How was it obtained? Basically, why is Harry Potter absolutely filthy rich? In todays video, I’m going to take you all back to the roots of Harry’s wealth, how it was obtained before he was born and you’ll find out just how influential Harry’s late family members were in cementing his fortune. maybe because he was quite abused then his family model was the weasley, a family with just enough money to live correctly and still have hobbies etc (they all had brooms, they had a decent house etc), that can be a model for harry (that you don't need that much money to have a happy life), so this way he wasn't spending it all the time, because no reason to do that his entourage wasn't money focused and showing off wasn't the style of his friends and it can make you not show off
if your popularity isn't based on wealth you don't need to brag about that

I actually think that Harry's having lots of money served two purposes. 1. Convenient plot device. JK didn't want to have to worry about how Harry would get what he needed for school, etc. She had enough to juggle already, in his story. And 2. Contrast with Ron and the Weasleys. Ron wanted to be able to have new things and hated being poor. Harry's financial wealth makes the point that Ron didn't know how rich he was, to have a large and loving family, which is the thing Harry wanted the most. Remember that on their 17th birthdays Ron got a new watch from the Weasleys, as his family knew his greatest wish was to have something new and of his own, while Harry got an old watch that had been in the family for generations, as what meant most to him was being part of a family.
I dont think it wouldve even mattered if he didnt have much money. Harry Potter was the most famous name in the wizarding world. Getting a "scholarship", loan, or even a gofundme wouldve been easy for Harry. I honestly dont believe money would ever be a problem for him even without family wealth. It wouldnt surprise me if Harry was originally poor before the first book was taken to professional editors. It wouldve just been a lot of unnecessary pages dedicated to explaining his finances that would be kind of boring and irrelevant to your average kid/teenage audience.

It's not noted that Harry, as the godson of Sirius Black, he inherited the Black family fortune as well, thou Harry left most of the Black fortune untouched and transferred it to his godson Teddy Lupin and his grandmother Andromeda Black -Tonks.

I love that Harry did for Teddy and Andromeda what Sirius did for him. After everything that the Blacks did to Andromeda after her marriage to Ted Tonks, never acknowledging Nymphadora...Teddy was able to get what he was born to have, even if his ancestors were evil.

Since he also then worked for the ministry & technically had a small % of the Weasley twins' successful store because of his "investment" of his TriWiz winnings, I doubt he & his family will use much of that saved wealth. Even if they use some for occasional vacations & such, Ginny & Harry's pasts have taught them what's important so they won't be wasteful & they will teach their kids to be the same. It's going to take many generations to use up all that money, & in the meantime one of Harry's descendants may create another potion or an invention of some kind that then lets them start a very successful business of their own. After all they have Potter, Peverell, & Weasley ancestors. Lots of potential!

Harry was also humble about his wealth. In the second book he felt bad that he had so much and the Weasley’s had so little. When he went to gringots he tried to hide how much he had, knowing much of the money for his school. that and the Weasley’s wouldn’t have taken any if offered because they wouldn’t want to be a burden to him, but he was generous and didn’t boast about it either.
His parents life insurance kicked in once they died.
That should be made available to Harry since the time he was an orphan .

It always felt like a retcon from J.K. regarding how Harry got his family money. I mean, potions make no sense given his natural talents. I feel like that is something she would not have missed if she planned for the family to have made their money that way.
I feel like she came back to answer that question, and since she liked Lockheart, she decided to give Harry a similar background with the hair care potions.
BMR 3 Harry was never bad at potions it’s pointed out first in order of the Phoenix during their exam that without snape lurking over him he did quite well. He did get an exceeds expectations after all.

When I took an economics class, we were told that one ounce of gold was enough to buy a well made suit, costing £250! A house would cost back in the day about 20 ounces of gold or £5,000. In my lifetime, gold prices have quadrupled in value while clothing prices have relatively stayed the same and housing prices have increased a 100 fold! This means that an ounce of gold is now worth four suits while a house is £500,000! It was said that Harry was left over 720,000 gold talers! This does make him a billionaire. But here's the thing with precious metals, their value goes up and never looses its value. This means it takes fewer talers to pay for things. Therefore, Harry will always be rich while people around him will be poor! This is why our economic system is messed up! Why? People are no longer paid in talers, but currency! This means in the current system you can amass a paper fortune, but not a gold fortune! Harry turned his gold to paper for the Wesleys or used his gold as a retainer! Harry's lucky the brothers were such good business partners! He could have lost 80 gold talers from 720,000!

Considering how goblins feel about anything goblin made in this universe (basically rented to the wizard who bought it amd owned by the goblin who made it) and that wizarding money is all(?) goblin made I highly doubt it. Honestly, I'm surprised they'll so willingly handle transactions for witches and wizards.

I think it’s entirely possible that Harry Potter himself didn’t know about the fortune he inherited until Hagrid took him to gringotts. His parents may have intentionally not told the Dursleys or very many other people about the fortune they had massed so that only a few trusted people knew in order to keep others from getting their greedy hands on it
I think it was in the book that no one knew about it but Dumbledore (and obviously Hagrid)

I never really got the impression that he was "stinking rich", just rich for a kid because his parents died and he got their inheritance. And maybe a life insurance policy. Same if a middle class kid's parents died in the real world.

I'd say that due to the sheer mass of gold and wealth, it is likely that Harry inherited the equivalent to at least several billion dollars in wealth.

My theory is that after he defeated Voldemort as a baby he received many donations from the wizarding world.
But Hagrid told him in the first book, that it is from Harry's parents.
It is to underline the fact that he would’ve given anything to have the family life of the Weasleys even though they were poor. Shows what’s most important.

By using J.K Rowling's exchange rate. At face value, Harry would be worth £253,125 (or $367,828) in 2001
