@@steviebaybee Ummm yeah coz they had that much MONEY. But I m just saying even if they didn't have money for equipment n books Hogwart's would have funded them (Half-Blood-Prince)
Do we know for certain that Hogwarts doesn't charge a tuition? We only see things through Harry's eyes and of /course/ they aren't going to charge the Boy Who Lived, but that doesn't mean there isn't a fee for other students. Hogwarts isn't a public school, after all, it's a private boarding school, so it wouldn't receive funding from taxes. Besides, the supplies needed for each year at Hogwarts are not insignificant in price, plus they needed to physically get to King's Cross each year (which they can't do via floo or brooms, and likely apparition would draw too much attention). So it absolutely does cost money to go. Yes, there seems to be a fund for financially disadvantaged students....in Voldemort's time, at least. We hear no mention of it in the current time in the books, meaning one of two things: the assistance either no longer exists, or the Weasleys don't qualify for it. I personally believe it's the latter, and is mostly reserved for Muggleborns literally without access to Wizarding currency.
Ron may have lacked financially but he was rich with a loving family. Harry was financially set but lacked a loving family of his own. Harry would have traded places with Ron in a heartbeat.
Leslie Alanis both of their roles were not better than the other. We have seen it whenever Harry was tested for being ‘the chose one’ and Ron for being the ‘insecure’ one.
They were very bad with money though. Scraping by all the time yet when they win 700 galleons in PoA they blow it all on a holiday. Some people will always be scraping no matter the breaks they get.
Victor Moss I raised a family on next to nothing during the Thatcher years. I’d have given my eye teeth for a holiday. They took a holiday, while the family was still together, and because they bloody well needed it.
@@TheVictor1990 they werent doing drugs, werent smoking, werent gambling, werent going to holidays with bank loans! if they were spending needlessly, yes. but just one holiday and thats when they can go is a need. now if theyre doing that everytime they get some money, yes, thats a probem some real life families do. but a holiday a year is a need. especially if you cant even go out eating or to shoppingmalls.
I've always imagined and viewed Arthur Weasley as one of those Professors types at big universities whose an absolute genius but in a very underappreciated field so very underpaid and underrated. I mean the man built a flying car in his garage! No lack of ambition there.
He just enchanted some of the car parts so it could fly, he is interested in muggles but he doesn't even understand basic muggle things, i know that there's a theory that he does that just to cheer Harry up but then in Goblet Of Fire he could've told Molly not to cover the envelope with stamps, it all can be explained as just his sense of humor but....
@@wireboar7321 ya but even so he should have had proper knowledge to enchant a car and make it fly and in such a way that it falls in the magical law loopholes. So no matter what he was a genius.
@@itspribanerjee well, that's a really good point, but didn't Sirius also enchanted his bike at a kind of early age, then again Sirius was indeed a sort of genius, i guess maybe Arthur just didn't encounter some of the muggle things to know about them
They weren't "poor" they didn't have "fun money"- they lived in a house that had a room for each, they ate regularly, if Mom doesn't work and Dad works for the government their means were modest. There's also a lot of kids.
Your right they are poor from Harry's pov but he's an 11 yo (and kind of a dick till book six ) he also meets them after he saw his own huge money stash Like right after touring a bank and the high end wizard shops like you say they have a house and food and imo hand me downs don't make you poor they make you smart
I mean they’re house was probably self-built and is in the country. So it’s not like having a 8 bedroom house in the city ect ect it’s not worth much, Also when you look at the burrow, it looks like two or three houses on top of each other. However, it is still my favourite house in the series along with shell cottage, because it has a family-vibe and meant so much to so many people.
@@sszzsxvs Plus, I think the appearance of the Burrow is largely because JK Rowling wanted an unusual wizarding house. Real houses can't be stacked like that. It gave the Weasley family home a lot of charm and character, showing off their eccentricities. I think it meant less about money and more about their character, personally!
“Harry looked away. He would willingly have split all the money in his Gringotts vault with the Weasleys, but he knew they would never take it.” -Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire; last page of chapter 10.
Which is a good reason why he invested in Fred and George's business. Potter's family fortune came from potion inventions. He might not have been able to donate it, but an investment... Pretty sure it was gratefully accepted.
@@Sight-Beyond-Sight I think Harry gave Fred and George the Triwizard prize money, because it reminded him of Cedric, and Harry wanted to cancel Cedric (and the guilt he felt) from his mind. And of course he had inherited a large amount of money from his parents, as well.
@@pannonia77 Yeah, I came across this idea as well since I posted the above, but I do not recall any mention of prize money in either the book or the movie. Maybe it was just too long ago.
@@Sight-Beyond-Sight It IS mentioned in the books, that the winner gets 1000 galleons. And then in the chapter "Parting of the Ways" Fudge gives Harry the money in the Hospital Wing. "He [...] stopped at Harry's bed. 'Your winnings,' he said shortly, taking a large bag of gold out of his pocket, and dropping it onto Harry's bedside table. 'One thousand Galleons. There should have been a presentation ceremony, but in the circumstances ...' Then later in the same chapter Mrs Weasley says to Harry: 'Try and think about something else for a while ... think about what you're going to buy with your winnings!' 'I don't want that gold,' said Harry in an expressionless voice. 'You have it. Anyone can have it. I shouldn't have won it. It should've been Cedric's.'
I saw a post on Tumblr a few months back regarding the watches Harry and Ron received for their seventeenth birthdays which really sums up the Weasleys. Ron received a brand new high quality watch, something he rarely had during a life of hand-me-downs, and they gave Harry a watch owned by Molly's brother who died during the last war, a second-hand and older watch but one with significant family value, something Harry has very little of from his own family, and it also connects him to the Weasley family. I'd never thought of that before, and it's so sweet ^^
@@soupforfree If I were Ron, I'd be miffed! It's like a strand of pearls going to your best mate while your parents give you a fresh water pearls! 🤣🤣🤣 You know they are not the same especially if the older pair came from Japan and were naturally occurring while the fresh water pearls are artificially produced!🤣🤣🤣 But then again, Ron is so easy going, he wouldn't care!
I think that Weasleys were written by JK Rowling to kind of show how money isn't everything and to show a contract to the Dursely's. The Dursley's have a lot of money and one son and yet they love to complain and their son is never happy. The Weasleys don't have much money and yet for the most part are a very happy and loving family.
Yes! I also think Rowling showed that it's absolutely ok for a woman to decide to take time off to raise a family. This makes even more sense when you consider that they value family and good relationships over money and materialism. They were the family Harry never had. They gave Harry true unconditional love, which he hadn't experienced since he was a baby with his mum and dad.
@@Me-wk3ix Although in the end the Malfoys love each other a lot and abandon the cause to save each other. Narcissa didn't work either, but she didn't have to.
I could agree with that, and I'm glad that at least they were never hungry. But still, I'm always upset that somehow Ginny always had new things, but Ron didn't. Like, in this family still were better and worse kids. Bill, Charlie, Percy (to some point) and Ginny were good, twins were always underestimated for abandoning One True Path Molly imagined for her kids, and Ron was basically invisible to her. Molly basically accepted twins' choice of career when they've got her gifts! Not because they're doing what they love and were good at, but because they've started to make more money. Rather shallow for a woman who was all about love, right? And don't get me started about Ron. Draco got way more love from his mom than Ron from Molly. And Arthur should have been more responsible. Either should say: 'we can't afford more children' or find better job. Somehow he accepted it later during the war, so it wasn't that much of a burden for him to do something different. And after Bill they could have adopted orphaned girl, I'm pretty sure there was many of them around. What, pure blood still matters?
I think Arthur and Molly knew the secret of happiness and they taught their children the same. Ron suffered a little over his hand-me-downs but he was grounded in love and loyalty. He was richer than Draco.
And look at Draco, his "friends cuz of benefits" probably left after the events of the Deathly Hallows. I see him stuck in a dead-end job in the Ministry (no doubt after Lucius pulled a million strings) because Draco has no ambition and loves to bully others. And also, with Hermione outranking him big-time, he won't dare make his presence a hindrance to her considering how she stood up to him with a slug to the face!
@@largol33t1 I think there is so much more to his character his father and upbringing had so much impact on him and shaped him into the one sided bully that he is painted as . He is still and asshole but near the end we finally got to see that draco wasn’t like his parents he didn’t kill dumbledore because he was a bully but not a murderer. There was so much potential for his character but jkr hates him so she wouldn’t give him the redemption he deserved. Everyone was so quick to forgive James Potter after he bullied Snape which in my opinion was worse that anything draco did to Harry but yeah

Dirgni Flesuoh that could be true. Only, Ginny was born in the year Gideon en Fabian Prewett died. Meaning that Molly already had a big family before her brothers died. And yes, I am fun at parties.
Oh dear I did not do the math of that one! I am much into checking them out on paper. Oth I don't think I have ever read what year Fabian and Gideon died ... And besides that I recall that JKR is not so good at the math of timelines ... More into the symbolic and magic of the number seven than arithmetic. So perhaps she intended them to die earlier, so their death would motivate Molly to have a bigger family, and besides have a daughter and especially there just had to be seven Weasley children ;) Besides that, it would mean that her brothers were killed after Voldemort fell and his followers were rounded up the first time ... But I guess it took some time.
Molly is a selfish asshole who would make a big family because she "wanted to" even though she knew it would make her kids struggle financially, other kids would make fun of them at school etc. I do not understand how can anyone excuse her selfish antics
or maybe she and arthur weren't very good at brewing contraceptives or at contraceptive spells or maybe they were as expensive as the muggle ones to get, or maybd there are not even contraceptives in the wizarding world since they are less than muggles and they have the believe that they must ensure they don't go extint so no one bothered to invent a contraceptive. who knows?( well i guess j.k.rowling knows)
@Bradley Shepherdson honestly I think Miss Weasly would have helped had she known or at least not as mad, seeing how her primary concerns where not knowing where here kids where
In the Chamber of Secrets, it is implied that Mr. and Mrs. Weasley were going to get Harry themselves and if anything, the boys simply ripped the bandaid off.
I just commented the same thing. Even I can alter clothes, like that awful formal robe that Ron had to wear to the ball, and I don't have magic skills. And they should have been able to make the house remodel itself. It seems painfully obvious that Mr. and Mrs. Weasley had sucky wizarding skills.
Take a look at diagon alley, most of wizards don't behave like us, they lack of common sense And they don't care too much on fansy new clothes And foniture, they live on XVlll victorian ways
@@edennis8578 Ron had actually tried to do something with his dress robes, to remove some exceptionally weird elements. I think it's just that his parents didn't understand what he felt, they thought it was all ok. Things like that happen in families where parents survived a war.
I just want to ask readers this: "What's wrong with being working class?" The Weasleys aren't poor nor poverty stricken! They represent what most people actually are in this world! It just gripes me that people don't accept a working class family in a novel! There is no shame in coming from a working class background. Indeed such people are often preferred over their upper class piers especially when a job has the reputation as being difficult with little financial reward. Second, did anyone ever question why Author's job was never stricken from the roster to save money? Could it be that the witching world actually needed to understand Moogles? After all many Moogles became witches AND they were often caught up in witching affairs!
The problem comes whit gender, if money played a Big role on movies And books, our heros would never leave home, Bilbo baggins was rich, so do frodo. When writting, You don't want the Reader to get distracted by this stuff unlees its the core of the problem like in Gone by the wind, when Scarlett had to work by herself to sustain the family And save the farm. Through education, my students see their chance at economic success. Their new economic success isn't being rich rather being above poverty level they came from! People are so conditioned to see the only success as being wealthy while most people see success as the mortgage paid and a roof over their heads! So yes, my students leave home for better lives! In fact most people leave home to join the military, get vocational training or work the fields, which compared to their home country is a step up on the economic ladder! @Miranda Musgraves They could've made a good house, some nice furniture, good clothes, etc. with transfiguration. Wizards can move objects, too, so why on earth didn't they use that skill to make a nice house, the furniture, and the clothes? Molly's knitting needles worked on their own, the dishes washed themselves, but they couldn't get some boards and nails to put themselves together, some brushes and paint to do the painting, a sewing machine to sew the clothes and upholstery? Seriously, they obviously never watched Bewitched; Samantha had it all over Mrs. Weasley. I love Molly, but she didn't have a homemaking bone in her body.
@@edennis8578 You need to understand wizards. None of them have common sense ( explained by Hermione back in book 1). They have a weird look at everything, most of them use old victorian clothes, hats And house foniture. (Mostly because thats how Rowling and most of us imaginé wizards And witches). It really make u belive, wizards are actually mad And crazy. (Harry madness Creepypasta aside).
Maybe another reason that Arthur didn't get promoted, is because he wasn't very good at his job? I mean I love how clueless he is about everything to do with muggles, it's a really fun part of the books. But it is kind of weird since that is his job as well as his passion, and he seems to know very little about it...
No, he it's actually great for a wizard. You must understand that wizards don't behave And think like us, they have Magic And no common sense (explained by Hermione on book 1). You can call them crazy people by our standards but thats the magic
Thing is, he never WANTED a promotion. He could have gotten one, he just refused. I can get the love for the job, but such a big family, at one poit it just has to be Money -> compasion for job. He could barely pay a living for his family. Thats kinda selfish. "Oh, i love my job and family. But my job is more important to love!"
I watched another video (or maybe I read something) a while back that suggested he (Arthur) pretended to be clueless to Muggle things around Harry. This was a comedic way to make Harry feel at ease and distract him Harry) from his own circumstances when they first met in the second book. It was an act of compassion on Arthur's part. We never really saw Arthur Weasley at work so we don't have a lot to go off of to gauge how well he actually knew Muggle things. Plus, I'm sure he would have had to get high marks in Hogwarts' Muggle studies classes to even get a job at the Ministry of Magic in the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts office.
The explanation given in the books was that Arthur was on the shit list for being to fond of Muggles, which was frowned on by all of Fudge's administration. This was stated in the Goblet of Fire, when Fudge and Dumbledore had a falling out.
Seeing as my husband and I made the same decision for me to stay home with our children (we have 6 boys and 3 girls) we have been in similar circumstances. Seeing as it was not economically feasible for me to work outside the home anyway, we learned to make large pots of soups, stews and pasta dishes. We had wonderful support from whatever church we were in at the time so we had more than just our own hand me downs to choose from so our 6th son had more to choose from! the funny thing is, our last daughter was born after we had had 5 boys in a row so she saw MANY new clothes as her sister had joined the Army during high school so she and her friend went on a shopping spree to get new clothes for her! (oh, and her name is similar to Ginny's and many of them are ginger as I am and my husband and I are high school sweethearts that share many personality traits as Molly and Arthur....)

There was a brief moment in one of the books where her father refused to accept any money from Harry, who was fully aware of their financial difficulties. He did manage to get Ron to accept one or two gifts outside of the usual holidays.
Was Sirius Black's criminal record ever expunged after Deathly Hallows? I can see why it wasn't beforehand because the Ministry wanted a scapegoat for Voldemort and death eaters actions but surely his records was cleared once Shacklebolt became MoM
I just spent the last few weeks reading all of the Potter books and I'm currently on Deathly Hallows.I didn't read anything about Sirius ' overturned conviction. What did it say?
It's in chapter 1 of Half Blood Prince. The PM asks Fudge if all the recent Death Eater atrocities involved Sirius and he tells him no and that he was innocent after being killed at the Ministry of Magic
In the second book, one of the twins said he had been offered promotions to other departments but he liked his job. I think that has to be taken into account. I don't buy into your blatently sexist theory in the first video that Molly didn't push him enough. I'd say he chose happiness over wealth, and they did always manage. Molly accepted him how he was, and I think likely did bring in money in side work. We really only see them for a few weeks a book. But they are an example that money doesnt bring happyness.
They went to see Charlie in an earlier book too, without having the big win yet, so going to see him wouldn't *have* been very expensive. They spend almost the whole big win because they took everyone on a long and expensive holiday. That's why I think them egoistic fools who can not handle money well, and have no thougt for the mental and emotional wellfare of their children. They feed them, yes. But everything is done the most cheap way possible, making their children miserable and often ashamed. Needlessly. That's stupid and cruel. I don't think the two oldest (Bill and Charly) missed out on much yet. But Percy got way too ambicious in order to earn more money for himself because of it. The twins were so set on earning money they rather fooled around with inventing jokes than get good grades, because they wanted to be able to earn money for themselves as soon as possible, even if that meant leaving school early. Without Harry's money they could have struggled a lot, instead of getting rich quick like they did. Ron was miserable and ashamed most of the time, hating being so poor, and feeling not good enough because of it. Ginny hated being so poor too because of what that meant for her. Edit: Made a mistake, first I had written 'Bill', but it had to be Charlie. Thnx for pointing it out nessy ness :)
@@Keyboardje I somehow can't imagine how they could spend all their win on that vacation. Travel shouldn't be an issue. I mean they can just apparate (or use a portkey). Theoretically they could go home in the evenings and return the next day (if they really wanted to save money)
@@Leenapanther I think Portkeys had to be paid for, and because of the statute of secrecy perhaps you can´t apparate in a foreign country every single day (we don´t know how mobility laws work in magical society)
After watching this video I feel great deal of respect towards Ron for being so sensible and responsible. I mean he had the worst compared to all his siblings, he was the youngest son who always had to sacrifice his needs and put with all hand me down things without any complaint. Yet he never got the recognition of his parents.
Although Ron was supposedly deprived growing up, you’ll notice that as he grows up he does not exhibit great ambition like Percy does. So as a grown-up, I doubt that Ron would be super ambitious In the sense that he would not wish to acquire great material wealth. Insofar as the tent theWeasleys used at the Quidditch World Cup, if you recall, the book states that Arthur borrowed it from someone at the ministry who couldn’t use it anymore. So he personally did not create a huge tent like that with magic-it was given to him as-is. The implication in Rowling’s books is that, just like the Muggle world, not all people have similar skills, magical or not. Also, the magic has to be used upon something tangible in the real world. All spells have specific but limited uses. Some of them wear off. All of them take education, talent, and practice. Just as no one in theMuggle world can master every skill there is to master within their lifetimes, wizards and witches are similarly limited by their opportunities, interests, and every day limitations.
When I was a kid before I read the books, I watched the Weasleys in awe. I loved the way Harry appreciates everything they have. I’ve always wanted a family and a relationship like they do. My family isn’t too far off. We struggle and my mom had a lot of kids but somehow we always manage. We’re all so close.. I always feel bad for only children or kids who dislike the family they’re with. I guess that just puts things into perspective. From the outside the Weasleys don’t see themselves as being too much different than other families besides their finances, but what’s normal to them (very close family) is not the case for others.
I honestly think the Harry Potter franchise taught me a lot about values. Harry was rich but didn't have a family, Ron was poor and had an absolutely amazing family.. I know which one I would rather go without 😊
My family is like the Weasley, my dad had a job in one of the ministry of my country, and didn't earn a lot, we are 6 brothers, but if we count one of my niece who practically was rised as a sister for me, we are 7, then my mom was red head and love knitting, but well in my case I'm the sixth but have the new things, while my older brothers used second hand things because when I born the economist of my family make it better.

A loving family is HIGHLY important, with the Weasly's humble life kept their kids from being spoiled like Draco and Dudley. Plus in real life, not many people have that luxury (loving family) so if u do...count ur blessings. If Aurthur did ask for a rise and Molly did work but kept their humble love and care then Percy would not have disowned his family to only reunite when the ministy fell.
no its because of Western culture, when kids got off and forget and leave their families...in other cultures, Chinese, Asian, Latin American, if any of the kids succeeded, they help out in the family til they get married on their own...and so forth...
@@angel91485 I was hoping for meat in this theory, but the kids were barely starting to grow older and have jobs during the books. They weren’t making big bucks themselves. I imagine Fred and George’s business helped, but then it was also war time.
I would argue there's a difference between poor and flat out impoverished. I believe it's mentioned they're poor, but I don't see them as flat out impoverished. They have everything you mentioned, but having a lot of children doesn't mean you're not poor. Actually kids can kinda make you poor. My own mom had 5, and it was a struggle. We had our heat shut off a few times, mom and the younger ones staying over at the neighbors. Struggling with bills. I'd say that's pretty poor. A high number of kids doesn't mean you're not poor....
I've heard a few topics about the Weasleys' and their financial situation. I still consider them working class, but NOT poor and penniless. At least the father has a secure job to keep something in the bank. Hey, 10 galleons may not be a lot but it's still 10 galleons.
There’s a big difference between poor and impoverished. Poor doesn’t mean homeless or starving, it means you don’t have “fun money” or whatever you want to call it. It means they could buy “luxury” goods and constantly worried about money. They couldn’t afford to buy much and had to either buy second hand material or reuse what they already had. Remember how Ron not only had to use a hand me down wand but also wasn’t able to get it repaired or replaced until they won money in a raffle? If you can’t afford the single most important thing a wizard needs then you’re poor. I know working class folk. And their financial situation does not match up with the Weasleys. They may not be a secure as middle or upper class folk but they don’t (usually) have to count every single penny and reuse everything. They can afford vacations and phones and pets. So as I’ve already said, the Weasleys are poor not working class.
@@connorgolden4 Not to mention they have no savings whatsoever. In CoS, Molly emptied their vault completely. And that after "only" Ginny still lived with them full time. As far as we know, Hogwarts is free for the students, meaning exept for the supplies, Molly and Arthur didn't had to pay for anything. Yet still this seemed to be so much that all their saving were regularly drained.
the Weasley family reminds me very much of the Bob Cratchit family in the Charles Dickens novel, A Christmas Carol. In that family, too, the father was resigned, the mother unfailingly cheerful and upbeat, and the entire family loving and caring in spite of their poverty.
I'd say Fred and George fit Gryffindor a lot, having tons of nerve and never really seeming to fear much of anything. Charlie works with dragons. Nuff said.
When you come from a large family money is always tight. Simply because of the number of people who need food , clothes etc. I got hand me downs from my cousin. My clothes were weird colours because they came from the sales rack.
there's nothing wrong with having a big family! I'm the youngest of six kids myself. My parents always said they're much happier having all of us and having money issues than they would be if they had none or few kids but were financially stable. In fact, they would've had more kids if they could, and they tried, but my mom was already nearly 40 by the time I was born, so it didn't end up working. She's still disappointed too, she wishes she could've had 10 children.
@@Potatopot724 making more kids just because parents "want to" even though they know their kids will struggle financially is an incredibly selfish decision. A lot of wrong with it
@@KateeAngel So you're saying I just shouldn't exist? Growing up happy and loved is much more important than growing up financially stable. Of course, food and clothes and education is a must, and it was prioritized in my family, but beyond that, you don't need anything to grow up happy. You wouldn't understand unless you grew up that way, but I always felt lucky as a kid. My family was so peaceful and loving compared to my friends' growing up. Sure, they had more toys, their wardrobes weren't 90% hand-me-downs, they went to fancy vacations, but their parents were divorced or fighting and they were always lonely without siblings. They had money, but they weren't happy. We were happy with what we had, and we all loved growing up with lots of siblings. My childhood home isn't exactly very pretty, but it was always bursting with energy and laughter and fun. My parents are the most attentive, caring humans I've ever met, and they would do or give anything to us that would really make us happy, even if they really couldn't afford it. I am extremely glad I grew up the way I did. So are my siblings- in fact, my eldest brother has 6 kids under the age of 10 of his own, and they're living on elementary teacher's salary. My nieces and nephews are growing up with even less luxuries than I did, yet you'll never encounter a more safe and warm environment to grow up in, and with that many siblings, there's never a dull moment around them. All of their physical and emotional needs are 100% taken care of. And they're HAPPY.
Arthur gets promoted within a month of Fudge leaving. Also, with Molly being so gifted at charms, I don't see why she can't just multiply one set of new robes or books, but I suppose she thought it was immoral and basically stealing.
It was stated in the books arthur could have been promoted many times but always chose not to because he liked his job even though it was so low paid. He only eventually accepted promotion to help with the war effort.
But couldn't Molly work while all her children were at school and in the summers when their old enough to take care of themselves. Edit: I wrote this before I heard you mention that she might have worked a little while they were at school.
Not full-time, I'd presume. With the kids enrolling at the age of 11, until Ginny got to school she'd always have at least one of them at home. Unless there's a kindergarden for wizzard children that I'm not aware of in that universe....
I can't figure out why they would need so much money anyway unless they were really, really bad at being wizards. Even young wizards could move objects, but Molly and her husband couldn't remodel the house, paint, wallpaper, sew clothes, create nice furniture? Molly's knitting needles worked by themselves and the dishes washed themselves, but she can't get boards to nail themselves together or a sewing machine that would sew, or brushes that could paint? Mr. and Mrs. Weasley are lovely people, but incompetent wizards.
Despite Ron’s situation, I really enjoy that even though he was impressed when first meeting Harry on the train about being able to buy all the candy and stuff off the trolly, Ron never valued Harry for his money. I truly believe if they could switch places in the money/family department Ron would choose his family every time regardless of the times he showed jealously about anything.
He was more jealous when Harry got attention or affirmation. His love language isn’t gifts/material stuff. He hated school, why waste money on a new book when a used one has the same words?
In India people did that where they wanted boys and kept bearing girls till they got a boy and it always infuriated me and I realised that the Weasley family isn't anything less
I really doubt it. Molly and Arthur don't seem the type to accept money, pride and all that, or expect any just because Harry married their daughter. Even if he offered or insisted. Plus by that point all the kids would be out of the house so the financial strain wouldn't be nearly as intense.
No. But all the Weasley children had stable jobs so there was more than enough money coming in. The Weasleys would never accept Harrys money if he offered it
No .. things became much better after the twins started Weasley Wizard Wheezes.. after a few years when the shop was a success things were actually getting better
You never mentioned how other families had fortunes from their family. They had money given to them, not earned. Weasley is one of the Sacred 28. (not even Potter was one - BUT the family did invent Sleekeazy’s Hair Potion so there was a fortune to pass down to Harry). Why wasn't there family money? It is not like Arthur was disowned as the Weasley line wasn't prone to pure-blood notions and were considered blood traitors. But maybe the connection to muggles made it so that any book or invention created was buried/not sold because of the blood traitor label which made it so that there was no family money to inherit. Molly was a Prewett, also one of the sacred 28 Lucretia Black was not disowned for marrying Ignatius Prewett, so the family name wasn't sufficient to be automatically a blood traitor in pure blood circles. So there are plenty of options as to why Molly didn't have a family fund. Maybe the Prewitt line was sufficiently pure-blooded to disown Molly for marrying a blood traitor? If not, maybe Fabian and Gideon gave the family fortune to the Order before they died. Does the Wizarding World even allow for females to inherit? Maybe Ignatius, as the only living male heir, got control and passed the family fortune to the Black's, before he died.
The Gaunt family were the heirs of Salazar Slytherin, but all they recieved was the locket and the ring because the fortune was squandered generations before them. Something similar may have happened to the Weasleys.
@@TheScienceguy77 Which my point is that this point should be mentioned. We KNOW Gaunt family had no money because it WAS squandered. This video seems to set the stage that Weasley and Prewett aren't and weren't important wealthy families and has always been in a middle/low class and haven't risen. There is a difference between growing up with generational getting by and having to fight to climb the ladder and not succeeding and having fallen and not succeeding in climbing BACK up.
I'm pretty sure the only reason Arthur didn't get much family inheritance is because Weasleys might have given all the fund to the Order since I don't see any problem with him marrying another pure blood. If this is not the case then there's only one solution that all the inheritance went into Black Family.
The Weasleys sometimes remind me of my family. My mom and step dad's side. My step dad is working and my mom would be a stay at home mom and then became a foster mom. My step dad has 4 children of his own and you add to them the little foster sister. That's seven people in the house, and I used to live with them too. No fun money at all, the end of every month was difficult. My mom and step dad knew every single trick, like using discount coupons, what time sales were on in the stores and so on. But their motto was "We'll manage". And, indeed, they always managed. They would sacrifice everything for the children. Nowadays, I live away and have my own job, yet when I am out with my mom she always wants to offer me something, and I have to smile and nicely force it the other way around "no, mommy, I'm the one who buys you something now! You did so much for me!". I love the Weasley family, especially Molly and Arthur, I feel like their house would be a very loving and warm place to grow up in.
I hate how they are often referred to as living in poverty. They had warm beds, clothes, Christmas presents, and always had food to eat and enough to share with Harry and Hermione. They definitely didn’t have money for luxuries or new things but they definitely weren’t living in poverty.
The Weasley’s resemble my father’s family. My grand parents had many children with only my grandfather working. He was a mid level civil servants. So the family was poor but happy.
How can wizards be poor when they can manipulate the laws of physics at their whims, including turn an animal into another, or create matter from nowhere
I think if you went deeply deeply into the lore, we'd learn that these things don't necessarily come from "nowhere" and that success built on means unearned does not typically last long.
There are certain laws to transfiguration (Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration), and one is (probably, it's an educated guess) that you can't conjure real money.
@@wireboar7321 You can yes, but if the physicality of that "object" is disturbed it will then transform back to it original state because the magic has been cast on the full form, not the partial.
I believe much of what you said, with a few extra thoughts. Arthur is an honest, compassionate, and loving man. He is also highly intelligent and observant as well. His and Molly's first priority is the survival of their family. Although it appears he has no ambition, he is in a position to observe the corruption of his so-called "betters" within the Ministry, and understands that running afoul of them often leads to retribution of family innocents. Arthur needs to be insignificant to fly under the radar. He has no illusions of grandeur. Everyone around him are scrambling to "be someone" on the top of the pile. Arthur and Molly know their worth. Isn't ironic how the so-called underling and his family helped take down one if the most feared villains of their age? Without the Weasleys, Harry would have failed on many levels. Just saying. Thank you for posting. Blessings and health to you and yours and to all who read this! 👍😘😇💖
I found this to be a very thoughtful analysis, but cannot resist commenting on one statement that got my stay-at-home-mom dander up just a bit. "I think we can all agree that things would have been easier if Molly was also working." Nope. Not at all. I researched this for my own family recently, and if I were to return to work I would have to pay about$50 per child per day for daycare. Paying daycare for 7 kids, even if you're just having to provide care for all 7 on school holidays, would be insanely expensive. Far more than one individual could justify on her salary. One must be able to find a *very* good paying job to justify entering to the work force, if justification requires the ability to not only pay for childcare but have a dime or two more besides (which I believe it does). We might assume this to be a non-issue if we assume the wizarding world provides free childcare, and I suppose we do know that they keep slaves, so...maybe, I guess. And I don't know if the childcare situation in the UK is different than that in the US, so there's that to consider as well. But unless we can reasonably assert that Molly is in a position to make a truly dizzying sum of money should she enter the workforce (which we have no reason to suspect), or that daycare would be either free or heavily subsidized for the family, her getting a job doesn't make much financial sense.
Nancy Gowdy Molly is literally a wizard of a homemaker. She has created a safe and welcoming place for her family and loved ones. She’d never have time for that if she worked outside the home.
She could've went to work once Ginny went to school, though. The kids are at Hogwarts for ten months a year, only coming home for summer. So there are no daycare issues.
Could Molly have already been working from home? Didn't they had an apple orchard and hens? Selling eggs that the hens laid and chickens to butchers for money. And apples could be sold in many ways, as is to a local market, as jams and in other forms. This would be a small way to bring money or could have been traded for other food stuff she needed.
@@jedijessic I love that idea and I think that it makes perfect sense. That way she still had her own thing and was also able to stay home with the kids as they were growing up. Maybe she sold her knitting as well.
I imagine that when molly lost her brothers to the first war, she wanted to have a large family and be a stay at home mom and be there for her kids when she couldn’t have been there for her brothers
Seems to me she feeds the chickens, tends the garden and knits ... They have a large garden where they grow their veggies and fruit, even if they do not have full farm, but maybe a pig sometimes?
Michael Cosentino I am not sure magic works for all tasks, but modt of all it seems to me that it is like, a little dumb, it would need supervising, cannot be left all alone all day, for everything. Ron says somewhere that Mrs Weasley would like a houseelf who could help with the ironing? Or washing in general? Despite that they should not handle clothes ... The Weasleys were not one of those wealthy families who had houseelves to begin with, so maybe they did not know the rules. Anyway she clearly had lot to do. And perhaps she spent half the day doing combattive magic training exercises for the day when she knew she would have to fight Voldemort and the death eaters.
In one of the movie when Snape was lecturing the spoke about spells to make money, being famous etc. I wonder why the Wesleys never used a spell to improve their situation.
I remember Mrs.Weasley saying something to Fred and George about now that they were of age they shouldn't have to whip their wands out for everything. My kind of witch
"I can teach you how to bewitch the mind and ensnare the sense. I teach you to bottle fame, brew glory, and even put a stopper in death" Nothing about money.
@@vanferuli3 What is new pretty stuff to wizards? Their whole magical society is a bit behind in time. Old furniture. Antiques, ancient and very valuable you mean. xD That's something else than a beaten up couch. The Malfoy family is the equivelant of magical aristocrats. The polar opposite of the Weasly family, even in numbers.
I can understand your point quite easily. The Weasley children strongly remind me of 3 of my high school friends. They were all triplets and came from a family of 6. They were never well off and their father was a minister. The mother stayed at home. But they were like the Weasleys: they were always friendly and caring and they are the strongest memories I have from my teen years.
When the kids were at school they didn't eat at the borrow, and when they started to work/left the home they weren't a burden anymore at all. Still Ron got the worst stuff of them all. My theory: They had little money, but it was enough, but molly blasted it all on gambling
Great video - I appreciate all the time you’ve spent thinking about this. I have a couple of ideas: 1) by not fighting in the 1st war Arthur was disliked by both sides - therefore both thwarted his career (social climbers usually pick a side and then use their connections to climb) and 2) perhaps Arthur was a plant in the Ministry, based on his “neutrality” the first time perhaps he could be seen as no threat. I also have a question? Many of the pure blood families seem to have accumulated wealth regardless - what was different about Molly & Arthur so that was not so?
NOPE not poor at all , just standard normal family. They might not be able to get everything they want but they have food , house , can go for vacations etc. all I see is , they are living a good life.
I think you did a great job with this video! I never got to see the first version, but your points were well- thought outand make sense. Thank you for making videos for those of us who are really into the folklore behind our favorite series! Although we can't live there ourselves, this kind of info helps us imagine the wizarding world more completely, and enriches every rereading of the books. So thank you again for sharing this information with all of us. Have a great day!
The Weasleys always reminded me a bit of my aunt, uncle and cousins. My aunt was a stay-at home mom for my cousins growing up and only re-entered the workforce...well, it would be several years ago now. My uncle supported the family financially for the most part. Money was a bit tight but they got by. My cousins were all boys, and there are four of them because my aunt really wanted a girl and gave up after their fourth child. If they had kept going, who knows, maybe they would have eventually had their Ginny. I spent a lot of time over at their house growing up because I was close with my cousins and my aunt was really kind and accommodating.
Harry Potter Folklore I do have a theory that starts about halfway down the page but I wanted to say something important to Harry Potter Folklore as this channel has become instrumental in my life as of late. Recently found out that I have Hodgkins Lymphoma cancer and because of a preexisting autoimmune illness I've had for most of my life I am unable to do chemotherapy or radiation therapy. Which, unfortunately means they cannot do much to treat the cancer. Which unfortunately has taken a brutal toll on mine and my fiances bank account as I am the primary earner working as a Network Administrator, which causes a huge amount of stress and anxiety unfortunately with me not working right now. I also suffer from a lot of pretty ungodly extreme pain and discomfort as the lymphoids in my groin are the ones taking the brunt if it currently. So laying in bed most of the time even though I'm not sleeping, so I started to watch quite a lot of TH-cam and I came across your channel. It was incredible, your voice is very calming to me and your videos actually interest me. But I was 4 or 5 binge watching videos in when I realized I was completely relaxed and in no pain or stress or anxiety whatsoever! So now, whenever the pain gets to be to much for me to handle I turn on your channel and just watch back to back videos and before long the pain goes away. I wanted to finally take the time to explain my situation and to thank you for your videos alleviating my pain and stress and anxiety, even if it's for a brief period of time. You have been an absolute Godsend to my life. Thank you and please, please do not stop. If I end up on the mend and back to work I will be the first to donate to your patron page giving back as best I can for the gift you have given me. Now, I have a random off the wall theory for the Weasleys poverty and I believe this is an original theory. We find out that Voldemort was able to successfully curse the defense against the dark arts teaching position so effectively that not even Dumbledore could break it, and according to Rowling the only reason it is finally broken is because of Voldemort's complete and final death (as it lasted when he was reduced to basically nothing because of killing curse rebounding off Harry). So that establishes that curses can have a pretty wide open terms for what they cover and when carried out by an accomplished, let alone an extremely powerful one, they can be near impossible to break. What if Mr. Weasley (and maybe by extension Mrs. Weasley was cursed to live a life in poverty, a proverbial hand to mouth existence, by either Voldemort or possibly even the ministry for not picking a side during the wizarding war? None of the children seemed effected when it came to money. And it would explain why Harry was able to give money to Fred and George "very loosely termed as a loan" for the joke shop which went on to be extremely successful or buying candy and other stuff all the time for Ron, he Marrys Jenny Weasley, so she will never know want again Bill and Percy both have excellent jobs meaning they probably good money by extension. And yet, he never so much as gets Mr. and Mrs. Weasley a Christmas gift or offers to chip in financially when he practically lives with them later on when it wouldn't even dent his massive pile of money in Gringots. Maybe it isn't him being selfish or being a Male and forgetting holidays/important dates lol. Perhaps instead, Voldemort did not want to kill or physically harm mr and mrs Weasley as they were one of the Sacred 28 families and pure blood wizard families were about the only thing Voldemort seemed to appear to show a little bit of care for keeping around. What if the curse was an attempt to sway the Weasleys over to the Deatheater side and lifting the curse as soon as they join, offering riches beyond their wildest dreams? They would be the absolute perfect spies as they had an in with the Order and although Mr. Weasley only works in the misuse of muggle artifacts he manages to have relationships with a lot of powerful high ranking ministry officials which they wouldn't look at twice as a spy. Idk, like I said, it was DEFINITELY an off the wall theory and probably has zero credibility or credence but it was fun none the less to come up with! Let me know what your thoughts are about it! And, from the absolute bottom of my heart I want to thank you for bringing a semblance of peace and normalcy back into my life. Thank you. So, now I stand here, silently awaiting to greet death as an old friend.
Hey, I read your comment and I'd like to say I wish you and your family all the best. May God bless you and wherever your life is taking you, be assured that, in the end, everything will always be all right.

I wouldn’t call them living in poverty. That’s a pretty strong word. I’d say they had what they needed, and maybe things were tight🤷♀️. And if they kept having children to get a girl......😒. But like he said, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that! And they are absolutely wonderful.
Why was it in Chamber of Secrets, when Harry took the Weasley's fireplace to Diagon Alley did he go to Knockturn Alley instead? Degan Alley sounds NOTHING like Knockturn Alley
dragonweyr44 apparently it’s a „plot demands it“ like the punishment in book one for being out of their bed in the night is being out of their bed in the night IN THE FORBIDDEN FORREST for Harry, Hermione and Neville... so breaking 2 rules is atonement for breaking 1 rule 🤷🏻♂️🙈
Harry said Diagon Alley wrong, he said "diagonally" which I'm guessing the flue network interpreted as going to the nearest fireplace in a diagonal direction to the previous location that the fireplace sent someone to. That's what I always thought at least. Molly even says "Don't forget to speak very, VERY clearly!"
Crowbars2 that‘s at least far fetched „diagonal to the last place“ 😂 what if there wouldn‘t be any fireplaces that way... you getting splintered or what
@@michelmorio8026 That's not far fetched. Arthur Weasley even says it after Harry disappears down the floo network. Molly "What did he say, dear?" Arthur "Diagonally" I think you're just nitpicking. Magic seems to interpret things very literally, I think I remember reading that somewhere. So if there were no places diagonal to the last place, I'm guessing it would send you to a place that sounds like "diagonally", or to the nearest fireplace to it. Or it just wouldn't work. Splinching only happens with Dis/Apparation.
@@michelmorio8026 Plus, Knockturn Alley is very close to Diagon Alley. In the films, it's just a small alleyway perpendicular to Diagon Alley. If one fireplace was in Diagon Alley, and another in Knockturn Alley, they WOULD be diagonal to each other.
Sure, but in this case, Arthur COULD have promotion and get paid better. He just didnt want it because he loved his job SO MUTCH, that the needs of his big family were only second
I think it even is a little exaggerated how poor they are. I'm currently reading the books and every time when it's mentioned how poor they are, I'm asking myself how they can survive. How can they afford enough food? Or isn't food an affordable thing in the wizard's world, because you can just double it with magic? But wasn't there something about that in the last books, that it doesn't really work to double the food? And what about the house? Doesn't wizards have to pay for a house or water or anything?
i think they largely grow and raise most of their food. but we mostly only see them in financial stress during back to school shopping time. Christmas is usually handmade gifts. celebrating school accomplishments they splurge a little since it was for one child at a time. Arthur gets a promotion and proper pay increase after Fudge is kicked from office. his bigotry for muggles meant punishing a well known muggle loving wizard.
I do agree that I think the whole being poor thing was exaggerated perhaps it was more comparing them to more well-off Wizarding families that did that because honestly the only way I could see you truly being really poor in the magical world if you are illiterate (or can't get a job because of prejudice or certain medical condition like being a werewolf) because with magic a lot of things would be extremely extremely easier heck even then it would be kind of hard because magic works by intent and will so even if you didn't actually know a certain spell if you desire to get a certain outcome is strong enough your magic would probably respond. As for the whole doubling food thing yeah you can do that perhaps with a Gemino charm or the Gemino curse if it's done to cause harm I guess. And yes I do believe it can be used to duplicate food and yes there is a tricky thing about food being one of the five laws or something like that you can't create food out of nothing so if you have a chicken sandwich pretty much you can copy that chicken sandwich as many times as you want and eat it and it would fill you up now if you don't have a chicken sandwich you cannot conjure a chicken sandwich out of nothing the proper way to do it would be first to get the chicken sandwich and then create as many copies of that sandwiches you want. The Gemino charm does have a downside I suppose being that the copy is it create while identical to the original they do rot or tarnish faster than the original so I suppose if you would create copy of some new robes or new pants or shirt that they would rot away faster than the originals would. Yeah but all things considered I don't think it would be that expensive to live in the magical world because lights and water can be created with magic I mean they could simply enchant their pipes to produce water or something. Anyway this is definitely one of those leg ups that the magical world that has over the Muggle one.
With having the job he did, Arthur would not be of interest for either side. Thus not worth killing, recruiting or mind controlling. He and Molly were able to have 7 children during a very dangerous time in England. How many can claim that.
My grandma was basically just like Molly weasely she cared about family and had a lot of children 9 kids to be exact even though they struggled for years when my grandad did get a high paying job she didnt care it was more about family not how much money they could pump out as wealthy as she is at her age.she is still extremely thrifty and alotof my uncles got hand me downs and she still does this to the grandchildren lol. But she is so sweet and she would spend if she had to help us.
Wesley's have it right.. Arthur stayed wherever he was happy.. you can see that when he came home and met Harry.. Molly enjoyed putting something of herself into making gifts for her children.. that was evident at the Christmas at Grimald Place HQ of The Order.. evidence they were correct is the results of the children all grew into wonderful independent individuals
I was a stay at home dad for about 4 years because my wife makes more than enough for our family. It was VERY helpful to have a parent able to take the kids to and from school, clean the house, do laundry, feed and water plants and pets, etc. being a stay at home parent truly is a full time job. Maybe having a parent at home made them more happy than them both being gone all the time. Not to mention the fact that they had SEVEN kids lol I love the fact that the Weasley’s pursue happiness over wealthiness.

Hogwarts didn't charge fees.

@@soupforfree Uh, a piece of sentimental value and familial provenance/heirloom over something new that could be bought anywhere?
I think that Weasleys were written by JK Rowling to kind of show how money isn't everything and to show a contract to the Dursely's. The Dursley's have a lot of money and one son and yet they love to complain and their son is never happy. The Weasleys don't have much money and yet for the most part are a very happy and loving family.
Great point! I think the Weasleys are also a good contrast to the Malfoys when you look at what each family really values.
The Weasleys are also a contrast to the Malfoys that way
I think Arthur and Molly knew the secret of happiness and they taught their children the same.
@@largol33t1 Think your talking about Draco before he changed his ways?
@@largol33t1 I think there is so much more to his character his father and upbringing had so much impact on him and shaped him into the one sided bully that he is painted as . He is still and asshole but near the end we finally got to see that draco wasn’t like his parents he didn’t kill dumbledore because he was a bully but not a murderer. There was so much potential for his character but jkr hates him so she wouldn’t give him the redemption he deserved. I think Molly wanted a big family not just to have a daughter (this is Ron's dark thoughts), but because she had lost both her brothers.
So perhaps she intended them to die earlier, so their death would motivate Molly to have a bigger family, and besides have a daughter and especially there just had to be seven Weasley children ;)
Besides that, it would mean that her brothers were killed after Voldemort fell and his followers were rounded up the first time ... But I guess it took some time.
It's less tragic when you have more to spare...

I just love the fact that even though they won a huge sum of money they didn't use it for anything else other than seeing their son

I struggle with your concept of poverty. They have a house, SAHM, jobs, food, cloths and lots of children. This is not rich, but far from poor.
When you come from a large family money is always tight. Simply because of the number of people who need food , clothes etc. I got hand me downs from my cousin. My clothes were weird colours because they came from the sales rack.
Should’ve used muggle artifact: the condom
MinJowskie I agree, I know this is a joke. But. It still doesn’t really boost the chance of Molly Weaslely to get a girl
there's nothing wrong with having a big family!
A lot of wrong with it
Yep!
That or the quality of things diminishes as you multiply. However she's rather skilled at mending clothing.
Hi
@@renaeoverbey3263 bye
Spring Day. Hi
Did things change financially when Harry married into the family?
Angry Jim Molly Weasley: go Ginny marry that dude, he’s rich
I really doubt it. Molly and Arthur don't seem the type to accept money, pride and all that, or expect any just because Harry married their daughter. Even if he offered or insisted. Plus by that point all the kids would be out of the house so the financial strain wouldn't be nearly as intense.
No. But all the Weasley children had stable jobs so there was more than enough money coming in. The Weasleys would never accept Harrys money if he offered it
No .. things became much better after the twins started Weasley Wizard Wheezes.. after a few years when the shop was a success things were actually getting better
Ahana Bhattacharyya & 2 think Molly wanted them 2 get miniscule pay jobs at the Ministry……😆
I really love these video updates on your older videos, it really helps me understand some things much more.
Molly was a Prewett, also one of the sacred 28
Lucretia Black was not disowned for marrying Ignatius Prewett, so the family name wasn't sufficient to be automatically a blood traitor in pure blood circles.
HoshiReed they also made skele-gro and I think something else
The Gaunt family were the heirs of Salazar Slytherin, but all they recieved was the locket and the ring because the fortune was squandered generations before them. Something similar may have happened to the Weasleys.
@@TheScienceguy77
Which my point is that this point should be mentioned.
Yes, and even if Arthur's family was blood purity obsessed, they wouldn't disown him since he married another Sacred 28th.
Neither Arthur or Molly received any familial inheritances in spite both being from pure blood families.
good answer
How can wizards be poor when they can manipulate the laws of physics at their whims, including turn an animal into another, or create matter from nowhere
I think if you went deeply deeply into the lore, we'd learn that these things don't necessarily come from "nowhere" and that success built on means unearned does not typically last long.
There are certain laws to transfiguration (Gamp's Law of Elemental Transfiguration), and one is (probably, it's an educated guess) that you can't conjure real money.
@@chanuppuluri8726 yes but they can turn animals into inanimate objects, can't they just turn objects into animals?
@@wireboar7321 You can yes, but if the physicality of that "object" is disturbed it will then transform back to it original state because the magic has been cast on the full form, not the partial.
I think in the books it was maybe said that would be illegal. Governments tend to do that. It’s been a long time though.

MIND BLOWN
@@loganbigmo Maybe she did, though. Do we know for sure that she didn’t? She could have made and sold things. That’s a job, it’s just not traditional.
The Dursley’s are a poor family. Not the Weasley’s.

I love your vids! Every topic is intriguing and fun!😊
In one of the movie when Snape was lecturing the spoke about spells to make money, being famous etc. I wonder why the Wesleys never used a spell to improve their situation.

Wizards don't care too much about money And "new pretty stuff" , Even Malfoy family use old fashion clothing and foniture.
As soon as winning the lottery, they blew it all on a vacation.

@EVAN MUDD thank you finally someone said it ! I agree with you 😌
When the kids were at school they didn't eat at the borrow, and when they started to work/left the home they weren't a burden anymore at all.
No, they are seriously poor. This is brought up many times in the books. Its why Rons clothes are always too small for him.
I think you did a great job with this video! I never got to see the first version, but your points were well- thought outand make sense.

Molly "What did he say, dear?"
Arthur "Diagonally"
I think you're just nitpicking.

I Think That's All, Keep Up The Awesome Work.
As long we have family..
The Weasleys are amazing ! ❤
It's so happy to see that the Wesleys, despite having financial problems, they generally love each other.
Because they were a single income family with 8 kids?
I also think the death of Molly's brothers had something to do with it. They may have had helped molly and Arthur if they had lived,
