Sticky slow gear and other details in Canon F-1

  • The slow gear in this Canon F-1 was not working correct, so I partly took the camera apart, then took out the film advance part so I could get to the slow gear, then just add 2-3 drop's of lighter fluid in the slow gear, then blow away the rest of the lighter fluid and add a few small drop's of sewing machine oil, but only on the axel end and then it works.
    The film advance gear was a bit sticky so I add a 1-2 drop of lighter fluid and then 1-2 drop's of sewing machine oil so the film advance gear run's very good .

    Thank you so much for your video. It has motivated me to repair my newly purchased F-1 and everything is now working perfectly.
    My tip for those of you who also have the same problem: You just have to manage to remove the housing. All you have to do afterwards is oil the gears. These are easy to reach with a needle. That's what I did and now everything works as it should.

    • @flowermaze___
      @flowermaze___ หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Thanks! Do you mean remove the top plate and then you can squeeze a needle and oil in there? Without having to remove all the parts? SO from about 24:00 in disassembly you can oil the gears?

    • @mjgerpriv
      @mjgerpriv หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@flowermaze___ Yes, exactly that. You have just to remove the top plate - then you can reach the gears with a needle and don't have to remove all parts. But be carefully with the little ball of the Lock (A/L) and make notice in which position do you left the shutter speed.

    I got my F-1 today! I bought it off of someone on Ebay and it has the same issue! I DO NOT have the confidence to do this! I had to take it to the shop so they can inspect and do a repair. Great video though! Maybe one day I'll have the courage to do this!

    Mike thanks to the video today i took apart my F-1 both top covers, and corrected some issues. Two important warnings: 1. Not to lose rhe small ball bearing under the shutter lock. 2. the right top cover needs to be removed carefully because the asa speed hook interferes with it.

    Used this video to adjust my shutter speed indicator by shifting the pulley labelled 'E' in the canon repair manual. Thanks for the nice overview! Would most certainly have lost the little bearing in the shutter release lock if not for your warning.

    Thank you very much for these instructions even if I do not know, if I would dare to do this. I am glad that the slow gears of my F-1 still work. But I know what such informations can be worth. Recently I gave my old Leica MDa with gear problems to the original Leica service (The Leica company is located here close by). Nearly 800 € I had to pay for the repair!

    Great video! I have one with a lighting problem. Pictures come out a little bit over exposed on the right of the frame. I think it may be a lightleak on the right hinches of the back door or maybe a curtain not moving at the same speed through the entire travel time.

  • @on_philm

    awesome instructions!! really like it
    I have a question, I just got a F-1 a few months ago and it is in wonderful condition. From what i can see, all shutter speeds are accurate. But just recently the slow gears below 1/8 start to make a noise after the second curtain closes. It sounds a bit like the self timer, where it winds a little bit more after taking the shot, so the camera is stable. Normally all gears stopped as soon as the curtain closed again, but now it really sounds like a gear unwinds a little bit more afterwards.
    The shutter speeds still seem to be accurate, but I'm worried if it is alright. Do you think it needs to be oiled? but id think it isnt a sticky shutter, because all speeds seem to perform well. or does this happen at the start when it gets sticky?

  • @amoxintubeu
    @amoxintubeu 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    My F1's shutter speed reading in view finder is not in sync with shutter speed dial. When I set a speed to 1/2000 th, the reading does not show in the view finder. When I set it 1/1000 th, its reading is 2000. Basically, the reading in view finder is 1 stop higher than the dial setting.

    A wonderful lesson. I would also like to get advice from you. Recently, I invented the Canon F-1n and found that after a shot, the mirror sometimes does not go down to its original position.It happens 3-4 times on 36 frame film, at any shutter speed. When the shutter is cocked, the mirror is lowered. What could be the reasons? Thanks.

    Thank you once again thanks you for an amazing video. I'm about to work on an F1 but my problems start at 1/15s and below. Do you know if the slow speed gear is responsible for these speeds?

    • @davehyper7835
      @davehyper7835 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doesn't matter, i can confirm that the very same mechanism is responsible for all speeds below 1/15. The camera is now repaired. Thanks again for the tutorial!

    I have the same problem with my FTb, all slow speeds are uneven, 1/8 stays stuck and 1/1 takes about a second an a half.

    Thanks for the informative video, it will be useful when i have to disassemble my f1! Do you know what the issue can be for the framecounter not advancing when I pull the advance lever? the film advances fine and resets, but the framecounter moves ever so slightly and then flicks back to 's', this occures when theres film in the camera or if its empty, and occurs when the back is closed and when its open. I assume it might be the backpin mechanism not engaging properly with the film advance/counter? many thanks

    • @mikeno62
      @mikeno62  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank's, it could be some sticky counter parts under the counter itself that sit on the axle, maybe the gear wheel for the counter is a bit worn out.
      If there are some sticky parts, you could try to add a drop of lighter fluid on the axle end, just to see if the sticky parts will start to move when you advance the the advance arm. just some ideas.

    • @menamejeff609
      @menamejeff609 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mikeno62 finally got round to opening it up, turns out the frame counter cover was brushing against the counter, also the spring/lever thats supposed to engage the counter cog had failed to make proper contact when the advance lever was engaged! I also cleaned it up with iso alcohol and placed some fresh lube as instructed by yourself, fixing the slow/stuck mirror and shutter at 1/30 and bellow! You are a god send, wish u the best mate.

      Yes, while I think there's a lot of useful information in this video the fix is more of a bodge than a repair. The emphasis is all wrong, with more time and effort spent on glueing a wire than on cleaning the gear train. I'd like to see the whole thing stripped down, cleaned and rebuilt but that would take many hours and, realistically, this is about as thorough as any amateur repairer is likely to be. At least the result is a camera that, for a couple of years, will be more useable than it was before.
