Treating external fish parasites Fish lice, flukes and Trichodina in a koi and goldfish pond

  • Here we have an isolated population of koi and goldfish that are suspected to have acquired diseases via ducks acting as vectors, ducks moving from pond to pond can spread various diseases. Fish Lice are visible to the naked eye and easy to to identify without special equipment, but there can be other disease-causing organisms lurking that can only diagnosed by microscopic examination by your fish veterinarian. Treatment for multiple diseases can be complicated, and we must consider environmental and host factors and in this video we treat this pond for several parasitic diseases we found to be present in this fish population.
    This unique POV footage was taken by my client.
    Your Sincerely
    Dr Richmond Loh

    Thank you so much! I saw a fish louse on one of my goldfish pretty early, and I used tweezers to pull it off. I also bought some new fish, and one of them had a fish louse as well, but I was able to pull it off. I was pretty confused as to what the parasite was, and now that I watched this video, I now have more insight on fish lice. Thank you again!

      If you get a normal test strip kit it'll have a chart to compare it to. I just googled what was normal for each one.
      Some fish have slightly different water parameter needs, so you might want to Google each fish's needs before you get them so you Don't have fish living together that need different water parameters.
      I hope I helped. :)
      I'm still pretty new to this too but that's just what I've found useful.

    My platy fish pond is infected by anchor worm, i noticed something was growing on them for 3 weeks and only now that i realized there were these parasites attacking my fish. I caught my infected platies and removed the parasites manually, before they lay egg and die again. Im pretty sure that there are eggs scattered in my small pond :((( help me! I did 50% water change today, so i could atleast reduce the number of eggs these annoying crustacean. I don't want to use dangerous medication that could kill my pretty ramshorn.
    I also notice that some of these worm are dead but still attached to the fish, is this common?
    Does small amount of salt help kill the young parasites?

    I have a parasite or worm larvae that I cannot identify. Tiny white bugs that either molt into worms or I have worms too. They have infected my fish and turtles. I have been dry docking my turtles and these things don’t die! They are living in between the crevices and under their carapace and today I found three of them with bruised and swollen jaw lines and as I squeeze the area, the worms and tiny white bugs are there under the skin!!!! I have treated for anchor worms with Dylox and Proform LA with no impact. Salt did not do anything and I’m currently treating with metronidazole for possible internal worms because I cannot figure out where these things are coming from!!! I have recently seen some gnat type flies on the top of the water in the one tank I haven’t torn down! Could these be some type of fly larvae??? What small fly would have larvae that would bury themselves under the skin???? I have gone to two different vets and have wasted hundreds of dollars trying to identify what this is so I can treat it!!! PLEASE HELP!!! I am SO DESPERATE for help!!! I have photos and videos I can share. Please let me know if you can help!!!

Our weather is cold always, around 18-19c water temperature all day. Do you know if for example...Angel Fish can help us to fight them naturally? what we can do if not? Salt will help? Thanks

    • @thefishdoctor8746

      Very good question. A couple of my fish keeper clients have described a loose symbiotic relationship (similar to the marine cleaner wrasses), between their small pond fish (e.g. rosy barb) and their koi, where the small fish pick of parasites from the large koi. These are observational anecdotes for the moment, and I've not come across scientific literature to back it up. I don't see why it shouldn't work, provided the parasites are easily visible and that the koi learn to stay still enough for the small fish to pick off the parasites. Lump suckers are used when salmon farming in some northern hemisphere farms. In the meantime, my advice is to find a veterinarian who can treat your pondfish, because they're real nasty bugs when numbers get out of hand.

      Unfortunately, the medications that are effective against lice also impact on your aquatic fly life. I think though, it's worthwhile eradicating the lice, and then as time passes, the fly life will return.

    • @Jaker788
      @Jaker788 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not a good treatment for inside an aquarium or pond as it'll kill your beneficial bacteria and stain everything blue, it'll also kill plants. You can give fish a bath in it, but that won't kill anything in the pond.

      Fins and tails with red streaks is a sign of ammonia poisoning, in other words, its swimming in too much waste, your water isn't good at all.

    I hope someone sees my coment and replies..
    I have a comet goldfish and a translucent goldfish, this lice was on the second fish since I bought it. For 10 days, I quarantined this second fish, but today I moved her to the big aquarium with the other fish. After moving her, this lice removed itself from the fish and started swimming on its own (when I noticed, I removed it from the tank).
    My questions are:
    1/Is it possible that the lice had breeded in the tank water?
    2/ what is the cause for their existence in the tank?
    3/ how to kill it without harming my fish?
    4/ and what kind of fish is compatible with my two comets?
    Thank you.

    Do the fishes die from these parasites, I just recognize one parasite at one of my gold fishies and I didn’t like it, I went right away to a fish store a got a treatment but I’m not sure what to do, should I take it of the body of the fish before I start the treatment or It will go away itself when I start the treatment, and does that effect the other fishes too ?! Pleas help me because I want to start the treatment ASAP

    • @thefishdoctor8746

      Lice graze on amd damage fish skin, leaving the sores prone to secondary infections like bacterial diseases. Yes to treat, lice as explained in our video. but If there is one kind of parasite, there may be others. Best to examine for the presence of other possibilities before formulating a treatment plan.

      Thank you very much for a quick response. Unfortunately, I cannot find here vets specialized for fish care or appropriate medicine. Can I use ivermectin, salt bath or...(and what proportion/quantity)? I have been removing the lice for over a month and a half now and it is an endless process without the right medicine I guess. I have to kill the eggs and young somehow since I can not do that with tweezers. Thanks one more time!

    • @thefishdoctor8746
      @thefishdoctor8746  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Formalin does not affect the biofilter at therapeutic doses. In fact, the biofilter bacteria may break down and inactivate Formalin, using it as a carbon source.
