I cannot believe that the survivors who went through so much during more than 2 months were judged by others who were sitting in their homes eating warm food and sleeping in warm beds for eating human meat!! I always say that as human beings we don’t know what we are capable of in a given situation until we are faced to that situation, don’t judge!
When forced into a situation like that your morals and everyday thinking are pushed over the edge of reality. I'm amazed that so many were still alive. I personally think that news reporters had no right or consideration to all to ask such questions. For what? Curiosity? To sell some papers. Luckily they were healthy, to begin with, and I hope their nightmares get washed away with time.
@@brazymoneybaggmelo2398 her point is people in live threatening scenarios like this, their actions cannot be judged by those who havent themselves experienced such an extreme situation.

In his book he says that his brain was swallowen and doctors believe the cold helped it back to normal, and if I'm not wrong I read somewhere that doctors now use something similar to treat patients in the same condition because of Nando's survival.
I read this book as a young teen. An incredible story of survival but they were treated like criminals on their return. If I die and you need to survive? Eat me. I'm worm food anyway.
I watched this movie in 1993 called "Alive" its a team of soccer player from school goes for competition abd it crashed in the Andes mountain and those that survived there last 72 days until two guy went and find helped.
"Life is more simpler then we think. We make it complicated" This quote made had me crying. Great honorable men who survived and lived their best lives.
These people are not cannibals, they are survivors, no one knows what they would do in order to survive in a such a horrible situation. If you wouldn’t eat people meat to survive, then you would’ve died out there.
I agree with you .. they did it because they did not have a choice. while cannibalism they hunt for human.. my opinion you don't like it shut up 😒.. sorry John I mess up your comment 😔
Being in a plane crash is the worst situation of all, but surviving in a plane crash and get bashed and a news spread rapidly saying about them turning into cannibals are even worst.. it was a beautiful story of survival .. one must be generous so that others could live. just like their companion who permitted others to eat his flesh if he die. Alive is the movie title
We spent 6 month to cames in Europe in the most dangerous mountains than this. But the media will never show us because we are refugee 😢 to leave our loving countries for some reason. They had this movie on netflix based on this story of them surviving in the andes, was a pretty interesting movie. Once I watch the movie I binged on youtube for like a week. It's a incredible tale.
The fact when they ask them what they eat to survive and they just stay quiet because they thought they was going to judge them or look at them differently ...... it broke me
@Mr. Laverty yes because leather shoes are going to feed 20 men. Also, not to mention, if you don’t eat for those 21 days, you’re gonna be weak to the point where you can’t do anything in the first place. They did the right thing
@Mr. Laverty It wasn't included in this doc but in a different one the survivors do talk about eating wallets and shoes etc, they did not start eating people until it was a genuine last resort and with how cold weather and high altitude affects the body by using much more energy they actually couldn't go 21 days without food they were also quite active trying to find an escape by trying to find the tail of the plane in the mountains which had a battery they hoped would help them send a rescue message through the radio, while that didn't work they did find extra insulation that the 2 that took the trek would wear to stay warm.
@Mr. Laverty jokes on you. God isn’t real and you are wasting your ONE and only life worshiping a fictional character. Looks like you’d be a meal for the rest of us in that situation, so at least you aren’t useless in your entirety.
I do the same thing when I go hiking. The mentality is that if you look at the horizon you will fell youll never reach it. But if you look at each step you take it feels like each step is a step further towards the final destination.
Exactly. That was the right way of thinking. Just to think about how every step you're making is leading you to your survival. I would've thought like they did too, even with knowing that there's a big chance I might die along the way, I would accept that and would be comfortable knowing that I would at least die trying to get help instead of just sitting there in the fuselage waiting to die. God Bless all those brave and courageous survivors. One of the most amazing survival stories I've ever heard.
Sergio Catalán (the guy that rescued them) was one of my family members. The survivors never stopped being grateful and they never forgot him. Every year, they would visit him in Puente Negro and make a big Asado. Till the day he died, they always kept in contact.
@@Yves._. I was born in San Fernando 🤷🏻♀️ that's a small city some kilometers away from Puente Negro. Part of my family lives in Puente Negro, I go there every year. Nando's story was heartbreaking. He had to leave because he didn't want to eat his mother and sister to survive. For sure, he also didn't want to see them being eaten. He knew they'll get to them eventually.
@@arseeeyem7587They show that in the movie too. And I hadn’t thought about it this way, that he actually left and didn’t want to return so he didn’t have to see his mother’s and sister’s bodies get eaten. Truly horrid and tragic. In the end his resolve to not return and just keep walking was what saved them tho.
The sad thing is that it was a plane full of family and friends. It would have been less painful to eat a random stranger, but these were people that they knew well
If memory serves me right they ate the bodies of the pilots and cabin crew first. Not that that made it any easier, I'm sure. I can't imagine going through something this traumatizing.

I agree. The older I get, the more I see that complexity is usually something unpleasant, not something admirable or aspirational. Seriously. There's nothing wrong with simplicity. Some of the best things in life are simple (and sure, some are complex). Neither is inherently better or worse, but making things more complicated is a choice.

rocket9244 no, they did. How do you think they survived the cold with no fire, most of them were smokers too so they had lighters and matches etc. combined with flammable items on the plane the documentary saying they had no fire either means they didn’t think about it or they lied

It's so sad that he lost his mother and sister he must have felt so guilty and that's what motivated him to leave, because he was so afraid to eat them .
No, what motivated Nando to leave was seeing his father. He's said this in every interview. He gave the group permission to eat his mother & sister, if they needed to do so. He wasn't in charge of cutting/rationing the food; only the cousins who survived the crash knew who was being eaten.
Correction: He's talked about his father's being his motivation in *numerous* interviews. I shouldn't say ALL; I'm only 3 min in, but I'm guessing by your comment that Nando doesn't get into why he was desperate to get out of the Andes.
I just came here after I watched the movie from Netflix, and it was horrible to see exactly what they’ve been through, I cried so hard when they survived and met their family, you can see they still having a trauma and with all the help and everything they still think about their friends as if it’s not happy ending for them💔
To all the people in the comments saying they'd rather die than eat a person: First off, don't be so naive as to assume what you would do in such a situation. This situation is such an EXTREME case of survival that neither you nor I can possibly fathom what our minds and bodies go through. Secondly, most of these men did it out of bodily instinct. Your body is CONSTANTLY sending impulses to your brain that it needs nutrients. Imagine a day of not Eating 6-8 hours? It's doable but not pleasant right? Now imagine not eating for 168 hours? How intense your body would ask your brain to give it food is not imaginable by us who had it good in life. And lastly, there is the mind. These men saw their loved ones die, are under the constant knowledge of imminent death themselves and fear overwhelms their minds. They'll start going into dilusional or hallucinating states which makes them do, see or think things no normal well rested and fed person would ever come up with. So in summary. Don't be so shortsighted as to judge these people for wanting to survive and be alive to tell their story. I commend them for their excellent way of handling this situation and making sure so many still managed to survive.
This is the ONLY book I have ever read from cover to cover, without stopping. That's how incredible this story of survival against all odds was. The most moving account of the entire book for me was when one of the men was dying, he began to cry. When his brother asked him why he was crying, he answered: "I am not afraid to die. I am only happy that my body will allow you to live one more day." I will never forget this story until the day I die.
The survivors find the book 'Alive' quite accurate to the real story, but don't agree with the way Pancho Delgado is depicted. They think it's not fair to point out one person as the one who tried to 'steal' things because, in reality, all of them secretly tried to get some more 'food', cigarettes, etc at some point. In the book, the word 'parasites' is used to refer to the people who did no chores, and it inaccurately says that the group considered not to give them food. Actually, it was only one person who just sat and not even tried to protect himself from the freezing cold, Bobby Francois. He refused to eat and drink because he believed it was unfair for those who did work hard, but was forced to by his friends. For the survivors, taking care of such a kind and affectionate friend was a way of feeling good and keeping their mind busy. Nowadays, Bobby knows that his behaviour in the mountains was due to a severe depression.
The fact that Roberto still in the brink of tears talking about it speaks a thousand unspoken words about what they had gone through. Alhamdulillah, they made it, and was able to tell the story and inspire so many about life, survival and death.
This story is one of the most inspiring survival stories for me. It's horrible that that media criticizes their choices when they had no other hope. They were reluctant to do it but it's their last resort. It's the only way they could survive. People are criticizing but they couldn't go a day without eating a meal.
They had a choice to either all die or to survive and they choose survival and I know the people that died in the plane crash would want them to eat them. And it’s funny how the media criticized them with a full belly and a warm home to go to
@@saturnturik oh I didn’t know you go two months straight without eating. These guys had to go days without food until they realized they had to either eat the bodies or go the rest of the time they had left starving.

This is the best documentary of all, "The Snow Society" (La Sociedad de la Nieve) is with original audio in Spanish but with English subtitles, by far a documentary, much better than even the movie, there are several of the survivors !!!
@dancemaniaco Yes. That's the best documentary on this incident. It was made by a close friend of the survivors', and actually, it is one of the very few where the 16 survivors appear, since Bobby Francois and Pancho Delgado, unlike the other 14 (now 13) never give interviews nor conferences. The director interviewed all of them alongside the author of the book 'The Snow Society' (Pablo Vierci), also a close friend of theirs, so the book is a much more detailed version of the documentary. In the words of the survivors, the book 'Alive' tells the facts, and 'The Snow Society' describes their feelings. Regarding the film 'Alive', the survivors find it disrespectful because it is not true to the real story.
Like he said: if you were there, you would’ve done it. We underestimate our own survival instinct until we have to face it. They were really courageous.

It’s sad but true whenever people tell me “oh I wouldn’t ever do this is die before then” but you never know what your body would do in situations until it happens I told myself things like I’d never drink but now I do it’s a mild thing but imagine in such a extreme situation saying “I won’t ever do this” okay? You may not want to but you may not say that in the coming days or even hours. These people aren’t cannibals, they aren’t bad people…they are survivors who did what they had to survive
It’s times like these when you see the humans animal instincts kick in. It’s not a bad thing, it’s our natural instinct to do anything in order to survive. We just don’t see this side of us because we live so comfortably Edit: so I’ve started a bit of an argument because of what I said. I never actually mentioned anything about cannibalism, I was just referring to their survival instincts. Whether or not cannibalism is part of our “natural instinct” it doesn’t take away from the point of my comment: When put into dire situations, we will most likely do anything necessary to survive. Stop arguing and move on
Not really. Very few animals are cannibals. Some domesticated mammals eat their young, but for the most part eating your own species is not animalistic. Even animals dont do it
Couple of miracles. It’s a miracle they even survived the crash. The absolute chances the fuselage broke like it did and slid perfectly is unbelievable in itself. The other part of the miracle is the guy on his horse who just happened to be at the river at that time. Had he not. They would have had to have trekked another 16 miles to the nearest village and that’s IF they went in the right direction. Otherwise they would have missed the town completely and ended up in the foothills tropics which is a jungle 100 miles wide. Very remarkable what they went through but the chances they defied is also remarkable.
Yes, some people who watched that scene scoffed at it as they didn’t know it was based on a true event. I’m not sure how much further Roberto could have gone. As determined as he is, he’d become pretty ill. That one river they came across would have restricted which way they could have gone. Not sure if it would have eventually brought them to safety or made the situation worse? At any rate, just incredible that any of them survived considering the harsh environment they were in and how little prepared they were. Not sure if your aware of this but there’s a 4-part series on TH-cam titled Alive: Back to the Andes that has 4 people attempt to recreate that trek out. They had proper winter gear and clothing including tents and a support team but only raw meat for food. They also had a support team with doctors.

My favorite part was during their 3rd day of trekking, and Nando could only see endless peak of mountains in 360 degree view, he lost hope but, his friend is compromising, take one step at a time, don't look up at the mountain, just take a step, a small step can lead you somewhere, and it did...back to life and saved the remaining survivors.
Nando was a bih. He took 3 pieces, gave his friend 1. He made everyone commit a crime saying that "pilot is guilty". First time they felt hunger was the time they should've started to escape.
100% without a doubt would not eat another person. For one I have faith in Christ Jesus so I'm afraid of death. And I'm not going to succumb myself to going against God. Let's be real, we all die, these people were never going to escape death.
@@jass1470 when did I judge them? All I said was the reality of why I would not eat a person. If one does do what they did, then they did lack faith in Christ Jesus and they did do against God. That's not me judging them, that's the reality of the situation that I'm pointing out. If they claim to be Christians than I would be able to indeed judge, that they need to repent and not excuse it. And even Scriptures gives Christians that responsibility.
I came here after watching Society of the Snow (10/10 but you WILL cry). Very tragic and sad, yet inspiring and moving movie & story. I'm so glad the survivors managed to not give up hope, but I'm so sorry for the trauma they had to face during those 3 months. God was truly with them.
Imagine being asked about the food situation for the rest of your life. How horrible. It’s not like they had a choice! And the Pilot was the most moral decision i think.
They ate more than just the pilot once he ran out. I remember reading they made a pact after they started eating the pilot that if anyone else dies they have permission to eat them to survive.
It's not like they asked them just about this tragedy. Survivors talked about their family, their jobs. And, as I can see, they're okay with talking about this plane crash
Just know, they probably were traumatized having to make that decision. They didn’t want to, but at the same time they didn’t want to die; they did what their instincts needed them to do. I’m sure they were mortified by their own actions.. This was the most incredible story I’ve heard about. At first I was so against their actions but then I remember that I’ve never been in this type of situation before and I understood what had to be done. I’m just happy they all survived, and at the same time my condolences for the others that unfortunately couldn’t make it. Wow.

@@blob5907 Yep, what they did was a "cannibalism", but they still were not "cannibals". I think the closest example is a self defense (another example of an act of survival). After the victim "murdering" the attacker, the victim is not classified as a "murderer" because he/she had no choice.
The correct terminology would be anthropophagy, which is the act of feeding on human flesh, cannibalism is when an individual intentionally kills one of his own species to feed on it. You're Welcome ... regards from Uruguay !!!
Cannibalism is also the act of feeding on human flesh. The distintion between anthropophagy and cannibalism is made because the word 'cannibalism' carries with it bad connotations, while the word anthropophagy does not. Because people like to perverse the meaning of words over time :)
@@dancemaniaco Yes, you are correct on that one. Also, the being eating human flesh does not have to be a human being either for it to be anthropophagy. Because it is just the act of eating human flesh in itself.

These were some extraordinary men. Even just listening to the things they would tell themselves to keep moving forward and not give up is absolutely amazing. Most people wouldn’t have last more than a couple of weeks these men survived more than 2 months
They are extraordinary men. They benefitted from being athletes in their physical prime also and also the intelligence and educational background of some. The team members came from affluent families in Montevideo, Uruguay.
I have a sense that they are living their lives to the fullest not just for themselves, but to also respect their friends who didn't get to live long enough to grow old.
That's why I don't like to judge, in the moment you don't know what you will do, and if It comes down to it, many people would have done the same thing.
Well...I mean I'd kind of expect them to wait like they did. I'd be slightly suspicious of the guy on day one after the crash who - with a bit of the remaining chocolate bar still in his mouth - says "Well, this candy is nice and everything, but man I sure could go for some red meat right about now...anyone else thinking what I'm thinking? Guys...?"
Forget eating human flesh, how the hell did they possibly survive that cold with no fire or cold weather survival gear???? They should have all lost fingers and toes to frostbite.
@TheCCPfearsANZ may be they had enough fuel to warm their bodies once in a while or they created a green house kind of thing to stay warm inside plane wreakage so no air escapes . anyway they had no fuel to cook .
Read the book, Alive. They only started a couple of fires, they had very little wood and burning seat covers and the like would give off toxic fumes. They kept warm at night by huddling together in the fuselage under seat covers for blankets. When it got really cold they'd hit each other around the body to encourage circulation. They'd block the opening in the end of the fuselage with snow and luggage to keep out the wind too. During the day if the sun was shining it wasn't that cold, they actually had a problem with the snow being too soft to walk on in the afternoons.

Well, the only horrors that look like horrors are in movies,in reality it's just some series of actions and reactions that lead to a misfortunes scene, if I showed you a man killing another in front of his family mercilessly then that looks like a movie, but in reality, the victim was responsible for the death of more than a hundred people, the killer's family included, that's reality, they just exaggerate and make the bad guys extra bad and good guys extra good when in reality all just want to live

To all the people in the comments saying they'd rather die than eat a person:
First off, don't be so naive as to assume what you would do in such a situation.

Nah I just see simple excuses to eat a human.
It’s times like these when you see the humans animal instincts kick in. It’s not a bad thing, it’s our natural instinct to do anything in order to survive. We just don’t see this side of us because we live so comfortably
Edit: so I’ve started a bit of an argument because of what I said. I never actually mentioned anything about cannibalism, I was just referring to their survival instincts. Whether or not cannibalism is part of our “natural instinct” it doesn’t take away from the point of my comment: When put into dire situations, we will most likely do anything necessary to survive. Stop arguing and move on

Exactly I would have eaten human flesh too if I was stranded on a cold snowy mountain with no food

It’s so ignorant to say what you would or wouldn’t do, when you’ve never been in that situation.
I was wondering did they eat any alive one also?
100% without a doubt would not eat another person. For one I have faith in Christ Jesus so I'm afraid of death. And I'm not going to succumb myself to going against God. Let's be real, we all die, these people were never going to escape death.

All I said was the reality of why I would not eat a person. If one does do what they did, then they did lack faith in Christ Jesus and they did do against God.
