      Way back in the 50s there was a radio host named Arthur Godfrey who later was on TV. He had a guest who created stories where every word was replaced by other words that sound close but are totally different.. A book was published with some of the stories and poems, called Anguish Languish (English language). He started a couple of fairy tales (furry tells) with “Wants pawn term” (Once upon a time…)…dare worsted ladle gull hoe left wetter murder inner ladle cordage inner muddle offer lodge dock florist. (….There was a little girl who lived with her mother in a little cottage in the middle of a large dark forest.)… anyway, once/wants is indeed close!

    Back then I was all about dive bars and rock and roll. Problem was, all the hot girls wanted to get dressed up and go dancing. So a couple times a month my buddies and I would do our best to re-imagine ourselves and head to the clubs. As much as I despised disco, I must say it turned out to the best thing that ever happened to me in my life. I met my future wife on the dance floor. • @rainbowgames1
      @rainbowgames1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      He did NOT sell out. This song is extremely true and organic to who Rod is. His spirit was always flamboyant and flirtatious and sensual, very aligned with the glammy disco spirit and lifestyle of the 70s.
      If he had just rigidly adhered to the salt of the earth, everyman rock thing when his actual tastes and lifestyle and spirit were on the same page as the 70s campy aesthetic, THAT would have been selling out for him.
      The whole concept of selling out is bullshit anyway. If the music’s great it’s great, whether or not it achieves mainstream success. In this case the music is great.

    • @bryancue2238
      @bryancue2238 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not his attitude or sprit. It's the sound. Maybe he was trying something new. Maybe it was "hey let's try this disco thing". It ended up his #2 best seller, and comparing it to everything else, it just seems like an outlier. Either it was an experiment that took off unintentionally, or he tried to strike while the iron was hot. For the record, I hold a grudge against all things Rod ever since my parents drove that stupid Vagabond Heart album into the ground in Jr High with that awful Motown Song.

    • @rainbowgames1
      @rainbowgames1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bryancue2238 The sound, what you’re reacting to, IS an attitude and a spirit. Music is an expression of attitude and spirit.
      This is totally organic to who and what Rod is. Read his autobiography. He was living it up in the 70s, enjoying all the campy, theatrical excess of the period, hobnobbing at glitzy celebrity parties, etc. And he wasn’t just partaking, he was one of the influencers who shaped the zeitgeist of the time.
      This sound was an organic expression of the spirit and lifestyle of the people who made it, and he was one of them, not an outsider.

    This was done November 10, 1978. it was at a time when Disco was sweeping America and Europe. I was a big Disco fan (don't shoot me people) My husband and I were dancers and Disco music was one genre where dancers could really show off their choreography. Disco, was also on the flip side, one of the most hated genres of music. People would actually have bonfires to burn disco albums. It was a crazy time for music and no music has ever been as hated as Disco. This song though was what is called a guilty pleasure. I saw several people who hated and I mean hated with a capital H Disco, secretly love this song. It would suck the listener in, get a hold of them and not let go till the last note. When you said what you did before listening to it, I just sat back and smiled and said to myself. "Boys, you are in for a surprise and a treat. I am so glad you enjoyed it. As always a great reaction. Stay safe and keep on discovering.

I'm *definitely* more of a fan of rock, and metal, and progressive rock, and soul, and funk, and jazz, than I am of disco, but I don't *hate* this song. Are you going to equally argue that the songs of the Stones or Led Zeppelin are trash on the basis that nearly all of them incorporate the Chuck Berry riff that is a staple stylistic motif of the rock n roll genre?
      Most blues songs not only incorporate the same hallmark licks, but the same chord progression! Does that mean all blues songs are trash on that basis?

There are songs I used to love when I was a teenager that today I would never listen to. And there are many songs that I couldn't stand in my youth that I am totally into now. This was a monster disco hit in the late 70s. The reason why there wasn't much saxophone was because synth & bass drove a lot of these disco songs. If you think you escaped cringe with this song, you haven't seen the video yet. It's super ultra Mega cringe

      We need disco back again!💯 I know so many people like me that hated disco; it was anti rock!👎😩 30 years after disco died I started realizing that disco was fun to listen to and sing along and dance!🤭 Long live disco!🤗🤣✌❤

    Rod has a ton of great tunes ....some rock and some are mellow.

    Rods trip into disco. Most Rod Stewart fans hated it, but it gave him more fans.

    Look at this way - what song will get you laid faster, this or a 20 minute Rush song about the rotation cycles of the moons of Jupiter? 😆 😆

      having grown up in the 60's and 70's I can tell you the girls I dated would have rather made out to a 20 min song than 2 min song. Also Rush gives you a lot of timing changes which work well when making out.

    If you want a song in a similar vein from the same time period that is not so odiously disco, play Love is the Drug by Roxy Music!

    This is one of my guilty pleasures... along with the other disco songs by rock artists, like "Miss You" by the Stones and "Goodnight Tonight" by McCartney.
