I had one in a 92 Silverado Sport. Looked like a 454ss but with a 5.7 and 5 speed. Put 275,000 miles on the truck. Only thing I did was 2 clutches. Kevlar type. Hurst shifter. Nice upgrade. And the slave cylinder needed replacing once. Even held up to occasionally drag racing when I dropped a vortec 5.7 in it. Start in 2nd when drag racing. 1st is a granny gear and no way can you 1-2 shift it at high rpms. 2nd ratio is same as an automatics 1st.

The shifter will come out under the dashboard, its one of the downfalls to this transmission. The S10 version may fit better, but the fullsize truck version has the shifter coming out about 14" behind the flywheel! You can probably make a remote shifter for it, i was gonna do that in my RMW until I got sick of replacing these things. I may have gotten unlucky but I have zero faith in these transmissions especially when they are getting expensive. The clunky, mispositioned shifter and wide gear spacing are more palatable when these units were dirt cheap:)
Hey when you did the teardown on one of these. How did you secure the ring that holds the main shaft in place from the back of the case? And which way does it go back in? Thanks. A video would be awesome but I understand if it's not feasible, best way I learn though. Thanks!
I believe the AX-15 is a bolt on swap for the NV3500. Dodge used both transmissions. I think you can also use the AX-15 if you find the GM bell housing for the NV3500. Novak sells the improved AX-15 which is available new, you can rebuild the AX-15 using the upgraded parts.
I have a 1993 silverado k1500 with the 5.7 tbi and im planning on swapping a 5.3 in it. So all i would need to have it work with the 5 speed is just the flywheel and entire clutch setup from the 4.8 silverados? does it matter that my trans is one for 4x4 application or is everything else still the same as 2 wheel drive?
I understand the idea of doing this because the NV3500 is so cheap but also the OD gear is pretty low. I personally would go with a T5 or T56 that both have good gears all around and a high OD gear but that's just me.
Been wondering if i should swap my Getrag NV3500 out for a t56 for a junkyard LM7 swap on my blazer (my 4.3 is cooked) and i was debating risking the biscuit on my NV, think ill just send it and hope she holds, thanks!
I had a 2000 Dodge Dakota stripper reg. cab 4.7 5-speed I bought new. It had 15" wheels and 215 tires on it. I could chirp 4th gear. We won't talk about 1-2. I ended up putting 17" R/T wheels with 275 tires. 3rd gear shifts were violent. It was SOOOOO fun. Everybody wanted that truck. Sold it in 2012 for a new Ram Express. That trans is pretty tough. What about Cryo treating the internals?
I'm wanting to cryo treat the internals on mine so I can beef up the engine without worrying so much. I keep thinking about a trans swap to get something stronger. But everything else I look at as the wrong ratios for my application.
I just bought a trans from a 92 full size. It's going in my 78 malibu. Bolting up to a slightly modified gen6 454. Trying to save money to buy the t56. I hope it doesn't break the first time I pop that clutch at 5000 rpms.
Did you have to modify your speed and reverse sensor plugs? I just bought a swapped auto to 5 speed, C1500, but no sensors are connected, and they look to be different plugs.
Factory 1991 S10 Clutch master and 2004 Silverado 4.8 Throw out. I made an adapter to make the old style master work with the later setup/quick disconnect.
I've got a 2003 s10 v6 2wd NV3500 behind a 2001 lr4 4.8 in my track car. It might weigh around 2700lbs. Factory plastic hydraulic slave cylinders blow apart now matter what year vehicle they're from. My first slave cylinder was for a 2003 4.8 2wd silverado. It blew the end seal when I dropped the clutch at 5krpm going into 2nd gear 400 miles from home with now tow rig. Drove home sans clutch shutting it off 1 time at a stoplight. Good synchros in the NV3500. My master cylinder is a FJ40/FJ60 variant. Right bore/stroke with an adjustable pedal. Pushes very well with great feel. It now has a C5 corvette slave with a metal housing instead of plastic. It stands up to 2step launches and high rpm shifting. T56 hydraulics can work if you've got the right clearances. Bleeding kits with lines for remote bleeders are available. Trick is finding the right adapter fittings... TH350 output yokes. SBC 18 spline input. NV3500 specific output seal. Similar case dimensions to having a muncie M20, M21 if the bellhousing were part of the case. Difficult rebuild needing a jig to install main shaft, secondary and balance shafts at the same time. S10 V6 4.3 2wd 5spd is the best NV3500 for ls swaps due the gear ratios for performance. Later year donor vehicle the better. 1/2 ton silverado NV3500s have lower "truck" gear ratios which lower the transmissions torque rating. Different years had different shifter towers I've found the 4.3 V6 NV3500 to be rated at 300hp with 400hp being a very real limit with years of research and real world experience. My track car weighs sub 3000lb so that helps. I'm not sure its gonna hold up to the lq4 6.0 I'm putting in soon. That's at the limit with 370ft/lb torque factory and my style of driving. 3:31 final drive ratio may help that right now. 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear give tire smoke with the 4.8 even with the 3:31 diff gear... Sure beats the old Saginaw 3spd I had in it. 3:57 1st, 2:20 (ish) 2nd, 1:37 3rd and a .73 or so overdrive 5th with the s10 V6 gearbox.... Cheerio! Hope this helps
I had bad luck with the NV3500 when i manual swapped a roadmaster wagon, its just not rated for the weight even if you don't put too much torque through it (i was running a stock LO5 350, 300lb ft torque). I went through 3 of them, and sold the car after doing the 4th one. I did not abuse them at all, maybe i just got a bunch of bad transmissions, who knows, but I have zero love for them. In contrast, i had zero problems with the Grand Marquis i manual swapped using the TR3650 from a Mustang (which ,coincidentally, were no more expensive used than these things) IMO its not worth the tkme to swap one of these in. Either spend the money for a TR3660 6 speed, or adapt a different transmission (such as that TR3650 Mustang one, a Toyota R154, or even a Nissan CD009 from a Frontier) you will be much happier. I mention the CD009 frontier transmission because it has a big bellhousing and will clear a chevy clutch unlike the nissan car transmissions. Also, The shift feel of the NV3500 is straight up dump truck, a Nissan FS5R30 or CD009 are smooth as butter. Even spending the money on an adapter plate you will spend less than on a used T56, and you will have six speeds. If you absolutely are heart set on using a truck trans, that feels like a dump truck, find and pay for the NV4500 At least they can handle some torque and weight.
Is there any way to rebuild this thing w better gear ratios for daily driving a 5.3L sierra? Or at least better synchros? Mine went out the moment i swapped the motor. I shimmed the throwout brg thinking the clutch wasnt disengaging
@@twoeightythreez😂😂 I just got a good deal on a NV4500, but I hear the same about their shifting. At least it's rated for the power With the nv3500 it screams and whines. It feels like it's soaking up heat & horsepower The fill hole always leaks after changing the synchromesh fluid
How did the NV3500 hold up? I want to manual swap my 95 Ram with the 5.9 V8. Forums say it won't hold for long behind the 5.9. Too much torque. All manual 5.9 V8's came with the NV4500 in a 3/4 application. Manual swap looks easy, especially in a 95 but finding a NV4500 won't be easy. Rebuilt one is $3,500
In my experience, they are not strong transmissions at all! I went through 3 in my manual swapped Buick Roadmonster wagon, and wasn't beating on it. Maybe i was unlucky, they were all used ones. Just remember that they are not easy or cheap to rebuild, why do you think i kept buying used ones? But even if you get a ringer, they were only rated for around 300lb ft torque
Only good for 300hp, designed for v6. Drive it right and you will be fine. Yes there were 1/2 ton with 5.0 and 5.7. Joe gibs put a turbo ls in front of one. They don’t care if it breaks. Would I use one in a stock engine. Yes. Would I use it in a performance application. Not a chance. Your almost better to get a 6 speed out of the 90’s f body. My two cents. My one day v8 2wd s10 will have a nv3500, same reason. I have it, I have the flywheel and clutch. Will I power shift it, no. Everything has it place not everything is a 10 sec street monster. Love your why I did this and reasons.
Typical damn ford guy response. My ol man has one behind a very healthy 350 in his 92 chevy k1500. 5500lb 4x4 truck turning sticky 33x12.5 mud tires. I have had a stock hm290 ( essentially the same as an nv3500 ) behind a turbo 5.3 at 10 psi for well over a year and beat on it daily and i havent had a problem out of it.
Do the vats have to be taken out for it to start? Everything comes on but will not start. I thought it would turn over....The harness all worked. There are bunch of extra plugs for the auto trans (putting my built 4l80 in later) i have to cover.
How would this do in a 97 GMC standard cab long bed weight wise? I currently have a 4.3L TBI but am planning on upgrading to a 5.3L. I don't race it at all. I use it to go to and from work or road trip down to the FL keys from Miami for fishing and weekend getaway.
@@beeterolds I was concerned because, for example, you mentioned vehicles weighing 3000lbs and mine comes in at just over 4000lbs. So I thought there would be a problem.
They were installed in heavy trucks from the factory.. Now if you have a heavy truck this trans an a powerful engine. Its def concerning. This combo works just fine
Late to the party here but, I have questions maybe you could answer. I have a 92 Blazer with an NV3500 4x4 and the TBI 350 with 176,000. I am thinking of buying the BluePrint crate 350 Vortec engine from JEGS. I planned on buying another NV3500 for the new engine since the current one is pretty beat and they are cheaper to buy than a rebuild anyway this new engine allegedly has 400ftLBS so my question is do you think in your experienced opinion it’ll buff as a cruiser? Next question is I was checking out the Holley sniper kit which seems to be a better TBI alternative than the one I have currently, have you heard any good things from it? Look forward to hearing what your opinion is thanks!
Make sure you get a speedometer signal converter if you swap this into something from pre1993 with a 4L60 or you will peg your speedo backing out of the shop
I in the middle of doing this swap but ran into an issue... I have a 1999 s10 originally a 4.3 with nv3500, I have a 5.3 with nv3500 in it now. Using the same clutch and fly as you but I didn’t change the slave or the master and when I try to put it in any forward gear it won’t gone in but will start moving forward, no grinding or and weird noise but trying to go in reverse it just grinds. Turn the engine off and it goes in all gears perfectly. What’s your thoughts?
@@chriss.3476 yes, the bolts I used to attach the pressure to the flywheel had too big of a head which was catching the friction plate. Changed the bolts and life is good and is now going to be attached to my cammed 6.0
@@chriss.3476 I went to the dealer and picked up the proper pressure plate to flywheel bolts. Hell no I beat on it with my cammed 5.3 right now and won’t change with the 6.0, I’m going to see what power it will take and eventually turbo the 6.0 and see how it takes it. I've been ripping my hair out looking for a manual to swap into my old 4×4 f350 with a clapped out 7.3 IDI turbo diesel, this thing can't be pushing more than 290ft lbs of torque. Guys are literally on planet Neptune with what they want for zf5's or nv4500's, I'm willing to make my own adapter plate and rig something else in, any suggestions?
The Dodge version was used up to '05 behind everything but the hemi in 1/2-tons. Mine's an '04 with the 4.7. The Dakota also had an HD version available. Hurst doesn't make the shifter anymore. There is a company that makes a replica, but they are still out of stock. I want one of the aftermarket ones because the factory piece is junk. I just replaced a busted shifter with a new factory style one and the housing is just ABS plastic.

@@davy1458 in my 1992 Buick I modified a Nissan brake pedal box and pedal to fit the GM booster, it all lined up surprisingly well, then mounted a shortened D21 clutch pedal (needed that bend to clear the fusebox and abs module) , used a 3/4 willwood master cylinder and it worked great. Actually could adjust free play and travel. Unfortunately in my experience the NV3500 was a piece of clunky junk even in the "cityslicker truck" that the Roadmaster was. The shifter location (at least in the C1500 pickup version of this trans) is garbage for anything remotely modern except for the trucks they came in, too. Make sure you buy the S10 version if you want to put this into anything other than the truck it came in 😂 the fullsize version has the shifter only 14" behind the bellhousing mounting surface. Also, while the speedometer plug itself will plug into this, if you pulled out a 4l60 and installed this, you will be able to peg the speedo by turning rear wheels by hand :) 4l60 has a gear driven pickup that pulsed twice per revolution and the NV3500 has a tone ring that pulses 40x per revolution. You will need a signal converter (e.g. dakota digital) to modify the signal if you put this in early GM vehicle that had a 4L60 (pre "E") . Ask me how I know that once a 1992 Roadmonster speedo pegs past 100mph it will not return on its own 😂😂 😂 Yup cluster has to come out and be turned upside down.
Everything I've read and researched that it's better to use a nv3500 out s10s because the gearing isn't as tall and closer ratio than the ones out of the full size trucks in which they can handle a little more of a beat down from the driver.

The Dakota at least the 1st Gens used an AX15, mine is a 92 3.9 Magnum V6 Sport
The flywheel you used does it stick out further from the crank to work with the 02 5.3 to older transmission if so do you have the part number
How can you replace the tailshaft of that transmission mine is leaking?
I just bought a trans from a 92 full size. It's going in my 78 malibu. Bolting up to a slightly modified gen6 454. Trying to save money to buy the t56. I hope it doesn't break the first time I pop that clutch at 5000 rpms.
Good luck. A 454? You may as well put a fuse on that bomb transmission lol
And hope you liked the shifter coming up under the dash😊
Did you have to modify your speed and reverse sensor plugs? I just bought a swapped auto to 5 speed, C1500, but no sensors are connected, and they look to be different plugs.
Good luck trying to find one in a junkyard.People want an arm and a leg for those because they’re a reliable trans.
I just got one today! 😂

Pennzoil synchromesh and it will last forever lol that stuff is liquid gold
What type hydraulic clutch master and throw out does it use?

Different years had different shifter towers
I've found the 4.3 V6 NV3500 to be rated at 300hp with 400hp being a very real limit with years of research and real world experience.
In contrast, i had zero problems with the Grand Marquis i manual swapped using the TR3650 from a Mustang (which ,coincidentally, were no more expensive used than these things)
IMO its not worth the tkme to swap one of these in.
They stuck them in Z71 4x4s that weight a bit more than Roadmasters. Some ppl swear by em others had horrid luck w em
Thank you for the video was a great help 👍
How are you gonna pull the bell housing off of a one piece casing?
How did you get that flywheel to work on the lab engine

Is there any way to rebuild this thing w better gear ratios for daily driving a 5.3L sierra?

Yeah, put a different transmission in it, these things shift like a 1930s dump truck
@@twoeightythreez😂😂 I just got a good deal on a NV4500, but I hear the same about their shifting. At least it's rated for the power

I dont get why they dont sell standard transmissions in ANY new trucks in the past 20 yeara
So you keep saying S10... the S10 has the same 4.3 as the Astro correct? Nv3500 RWD Astro Conversion???

but I do have three more as a spare tho, I know they’re not nv3500 because they all were on 92s chevys 1500

Exactly. If I wanted to put any serious power into a manual. I would buy a TKO. But for most street driven projects.. it'll be ok.

Also, while the speedometer plug itself will plug into this, if you pulled out a 4l60 and installed this, you will be able to peg the speedo by turning rear wheels by hand :)
4l60 has a gear driven pickup that pulsed twice per revolution and the NV3500 has a tone ring that pulses 40x per revolution. You will need a signal converter (e.g. dakota digital) to modify the signal if you put this in early GM vehicle that had a 4L60 (pre "E") .

You can run an internal slave on an external slave trans buddy.
They say 300 foot pounds but even I you got 500 foot pounds going threw I it will be just fine...you can do burn outs but it's the banging gears is what fucks is
Typical damn ford guy response. My ol man has one behind a very healthy 350 in his 92 chevy k1500. 5500lb 4x4 truck turning sticky 33x12.5 mud tires. He drives that truck like he hates it on and off road, and it keeps asking for more. Just saying🤷♂️ boils the tires and chirps 5th. Oh and smoked every gt its ran across.
Angie Clark well obviously if it’s chirping fifth and beating on mustangs then that 350 is extremely healthy
Yes they are in rams
