Matt don’t get off the soap box those are some of my favorite parts. Especially when Tim is there laughing the whole time bc he knows what’s going to happen before it even starts Great job guys love the channel!
As a Florida saltwater fisherman I understand the braid. Think too many freshwater fisherman don't understand the braid to leader game. I use it all the time. Even when flipping.
Hey Matt, I never comment on anything on TH-cam, but this video actually has me clapping as a watch it. I worked for a braided line manufacturer for 8 years and now work for a tackle company very involved in the bass market, so everything you guys discuss is very relevant for me. I have been watching the TacticalBassin videos for awhile now and I love the content. However, after this video I just gained even more respect for you guys! You nailed your soapbox rant as I felt like I was listing to a recording of myself... Keep up the great work!
The 6" regular magdraft and the freestyle retrieved through the grass have gotten me a seasons worth of big bass in the past 3 weeks. And I thank you guys for that knowledge!
Thanks for the wake bait heads up. Watched this video first thing this morning and went out on my home Lake and caught my first wake bait that I made myself last fall. And this was following catching two fish a couple evenings earlier on a walking popper I made last year. Super excited to finally get the reward/confermation that I've been doing something rite with my new pastime of baitmaking. Still working on that big glidebait fish, with my first blowup coming about a week ago on a eight inch wide glider i made early this year. Started following your channel about the same time and have really come to appreciate your gift of sharing so freely all your experience and knowlege of how to catch fish on a more consistent basis. Your glide bait videos have really given me a real confidence that I will catch my new pb. I had a big goal of double digit fish in mind when I started my journey down this big bait rabbit hole like someone/ Mat likes to say from time to time. Thanks again Chip the Fishing Fool Jr.
I don’t throw anything huge here in Illinois but I did get some s waiver 168s and some megabass suwitches. I throw them with a Bantam MGL on a 7’7” H Expride B swim/big bait rod with 65 lb braid and it seems to work great. I’ve caught some big fish on it at Newton this spring.
Pretty funny seeing this video pop up, I just caught a 5.5lb on a Jackall Mikey Jr wake bait last night up here in Minnesota, perfect timing. Also right near the end of the day today, someone called the store asking if we had a Zodias 7'9 XH in stock, not a very common rod for someone to be looking for, I am betting he watched your video Matt.
Just put new line on my zodias 7’9” xh it’s honestly an incredible rod. Extremely light and will throw a 8” magdraft a mile with little effort. Really wish they would have gone with an 18” handle instead of 17” but whatever. Best channel period.
I had a recent experience that I will say supports Matt’s advice on going up in size with braid. I was using 40 or 50 lb braid straight to a 168 size S-waver and got a backlash during a cast, when the line stopped going out and that bait hit the end it snapped that line like nothing. I tie very consistent knots and this was not in any way knocked up but all it took was that sudden shock and the line broke. Go with the bigger line, the bait will take their attention away from it anyways and you will have a much better chance of landing them on 65 or 80. If I were throwing truly heavy/large baits I might even go to 100 lb test Maxcuatro just to be safe.
I took the plunge and ordered the Tactical color in the Burrito. I’ve been watching you guys catch big ones in it since you came out with the color. Time for me to join in on the action.
Big bass into summer with magdraft phenomenal as stated where grass isn’t to thick. Also position think is very good key as well just won the Bassmaster Bass Nation Kayak Series Tournament on Clear Lake with it. 2 hour bite window thank la to tour videos for great content info advice and like you said most people don’t go out and throw it all day well only one way to learn it and that’s just that all day
I got the diawa tatula swimbait rod about 2 years ago I believe it was original tatula swimbaits rod line. Its a 7' 9" mod fast 1-6oz baits. It's been an extremely good all around rod for hard & soft baits! It's sweet spot is around 4 oz but it will throw 6-7oz baits without issues & can throw a 6" magdrafts as well. I through 6" baits on smaller rod most of time keep the tatula for bigger baits. I highly recommend that rod though! I have a medium gear ratio lexa 300 paired with it & I throw all my baits on 20lb floro. I will have to give your 80lb braid & shock leaders a try though.
Hits home with me. Lost a swamp donkey last night because my equipment could not control her. She went nuts....like she was on drugs..... Thanks for teaching us!
Your West Coast/SoCal saltwater angler viewers will understand your braid/flouro/mono gospel better than others, especially if they are good/better anglers. In catching the tunas in Eastern Pacific/Baja waters, we use a lot of braid backing with mono and flouro (as well as wire for wahoo) leaders. Different American brands' mono will differ in diameter more widely. And knowing what brand, type and qualities of line you are using is more important for accurate line setups, as well as for what hardware (crimping sleeves/chafing springs/crimping tools) is used, and is compatible with the line you wish to use. Also, a lot of coastal saltwater bass fisherman on the West Coast can not only use your new screw jig head for ocean use (as well as for freshwater use), but a lot of their saltwater rod and reel setups are perfect and adaptable for throwing all these swimbaits within this video, without having to go to the added expense of buying more freshwater rods and reels. Really, I've found the transition to becoming a better freshwater bass fisherman easier after spending a significant amount of time fishing saltwater bass, on the coastal Pacific Ocean. And honestly, there is not much of a difference in a lot of ways, between the two types of fishing.
Thanks Matt, cant wait to fish those color lines, live i northern California and ive never tried it,always saw them just figured it would be to deep. Thanks for your teams videos, really learn alot. Sean
I started 2 years ago using the Lew's Super Duty wide on my big baits over my tranxx and conquest and it launches the baits farther with less effort...just an option.
My dude….i always loved your videos. But this video in particular hit home so hard, and i went out today with the big bites b5 and absolutely SMASHED my local lake and caught 4 bass over 3 pounds in long island ny!
I use the Daiwa Lexa Winn 300 which comes with a power handle on the savage gear squad XXH, that setup is for any lure over 5oz and for striper, I follow your line suggestions there but for smaller stuff up to 4.5oz I use straight 20lb flouro on a tatula 200
Awesome info always! I preach braid to leader over and over as well (but I do still use that 30lb big game even after that chat, just happens to work for me). I run both 65lb and 80lb straight braid to mono leader even in super clear water and it gets the job done and done well 🖖🎣
@@BSmith-qt7ev i use the blood knot, for braid to leader (just like matt and tim) 65lb or 80lb x9 braid to 20lb-30ln mono leader (use a palomar knot to a spro clip). the key for me is to keep the leader short enough to stay out of the reel. my main 2 setups are both dobyns rods, fury 806 with a curado 200 for most glides up to 7", and a dobyns bullshad 835sb with a curado 300 for glide over 8" and the 10" magdraft. both have normal guides (micro guides aren't going to work).. I haven't had a problem fishing rodman or lake rousseau down here in florida and both are loaded with timber. I am going to try your set up with braid to leader. How long is your leader and what knot do you use to marry the two? You guys have drastically affected my success as a bass fisherman. Thank You🎣
Do you find some places are more soft bait bodies of water and others are more hard bait bodies of water? What knot do you tiw for your braid to flouro or mono leader, and what onot do you tie to the lure? What do you think of the Six Gill Brute swimbait rods and the Okuma Guide select swimbait rods?
Megabass vatallion crushed my pb at 6.26 and the jackal gantral followed it up at 5.93. Idk if I could’ve burned the vatallion any faster without it failing out swimming. The gantral I flipped next to a tree and almost worked it like a jerkbait with some gentle pulls before a slightly harder pop
Are there two different tail styles for the mag draft? As I look I keep seeing some that have a triangle shade and then others that have a more rectangular shape. And I don’t know if I’m just messing something or what
Awesome video indeed I want to start throwing big swimbaits and glidebaits, Is it possible to use a spinning Rod and reel Or do I have to use a baitcaster
Hey Matt, what do you think of the Megabass Destroyer Blackjack for Glides and big swimbaits? I use the Blackjack and Tequila Baccarac as I'm not throwing over 6 ounces. Tatula 300's on both. I need to try a Tranx.
Great video. I am kayak angler that likes to throw some bigger baits (up to about 4oz). I need one swim bait rod that can be versatile. I was leaning Zodias but you mentioned might not be great for the treble hooked baits. Do you have a recommendation?
Bro can you please do a in dept instruction video on your braid to leader connection knot??? Like a camera right over your hands close up so we can see exactly how you tie the blood knot 💯
I’ve been looking at that zodias 7’9” XH. I have the new zodias 7’4” frog rod and I love it. My question is will the 7’9” XH work well on weedless baits. I like to take the harness out of an 8” magdraft and rig it weedless. I’m down in Florida so I throw a lot of weedless baits. Will this rod be able to handle that size bait rigged weedless? I’m throwing it on a st croix victory now. It sounds like with what your saying the zodias would be a better option for an 8” soft bait. Thanks in advance.
We sure have, we've actually caught a bunch of smallies on it. I wouldn't say there is a smallie color... hitch or tactical shad are both really universal baitfish colors. One is ghost, the other is solid.
Great tips and information! Thanks! Now I don't want to go to work. I want to fish with you for some giant bass! Thanks for taking the time in explaining why and how you do things. Do you use a snap ring for your glide baits and if so, which do you recommend?
Hey Matt, a few years ago, you made a video where you showed destroyed swimbaits you have fished over the years. You mentioned the possibility of never showing it again, but I love videos of you showing us mangled baits. Could you possibly do an updated version? Tight lines brother.
What’s a good braid to leader knot? I do well with light line using an Albright on spinning tackle but when I’ve tried it on a top water setup (30 lb braid to 17 fluoro leader) I’ve had problems with my leader slipping loose. I can’t do an FG, I’ve already tried it. Any suggestions or tips?
If I am at home I use the FG but out on the water I do the Uni to Uni or some call it the double Uni knot. 80# maxcuatro to 20# Abrazx, I do 7 wraps on the braid and 5 wraps on the flouro. On 80#maxcuatro and 25# Abrazx, I go 6 wraps on braid and 4 wraps on flouro. I also put a tiny drop of loctite super gel super glue and rub it in with my fingers, on each knot. It is all about it being strong but small enough to go the guides with no clanking. The clanking weakens the knot over time, by making it the smallest you can it reduces thst possibility alot. For 30# braid to 17 I would do 7 braid to 5 flouro. The Uni to Uni is super easy to tie and is strong. It just works and I highly recommend it. It is a little bit bigger but If you try to make it as small as possible but still strong, it works like a charm. Hope this helps.
@@toroblanco1637 thanks for the reply. I’ve used the double uni and never had it fail, but like you said I can’t get the diameter as small as the Albright I tie. I’ll just practice more and try to get it perfect
Do you gentlemen have a recommendation for a slightly shorter swimbait rod for kayak fishing? I've really been looking for something around 7'5". All of my 8' rods are a nightmare on the kayak.
LDC makes a MH 7'8" 1-5 true ratings swimbait rod. It is the most versitile rod out there. They are hard to get because they sellout very very fast. Nameless custom rods makes a similar one and is also great. Leviathon rods makes a 7'6" MH 1-4 ounce that is good for hard bait treble lures because it is more parabolic or moderate as some call it.
Anyone have any tips for fishing a 6" magdraft? Im using 50lb braid to a 20lb flouro leader and its like the bait doesn't want to swim or track properly unless I reel it way too fast to keep it in the proper depth
A tungsten nail sinker( nail weight) 3/32 placed under the jaw on opposite side side it is leaning works very good for tuning those lures. Start close to the center just a little offset and cast out and swim it back. If not enough take it out and put it even more to the opposite side. Then toss it out and swim it back to verify it swims straight. Keep playing with it till you get it to swim right. The faster you swim it, it blows out more so if yours rights itself at faster rate it should be very little off center. Try it putting it slightly off center at first.
In my opinion no one comes close to Matt in educating people in bass fishing. Superb communication skills and smooth delivery.

Matt, if you were throwing these swimbaits in musky water, would you alter your leader choice?
I love straight 50lb braid on my big wakebaits. Never have issues with it.
Great tips and information! Thanks! Now I don't want to go to work. I want to fish with you for some giant bass! Thanks for taking the time in explaining why and how you do things. Do you use a snap ring for your glide baits and if so, which do you recommend?
This year, the big soft jerkbaits 7-9" have been my big bass producers
Please, please, please...leader length, knot braid to leader, leader to lure. Thanks so much
Is a swim be a good option for after sundown? More specifically a glide?
How long of leader do yall run for the swim baits?
Love the video!!!! Can you do a video on big swim baits at night?
Stinger hooks on the big nichols spoon?
Power handle is really fun on big fish
"If a bass had hands..." Dude, I'm dying 😂
Awsome Vid buddy . Thanks 👍
We're happy to do it 👍🏼
Hot tip: Try your tequila baccarac for an accurate dock casting rod for baits under ~2.5oz. The thing feels telepathic.
What size BKK hook for the six inch magdraft?
That was dope !
Thanks
