Swim Jig Fishing! All The Tricks No One Is Talking About For Bass Fishing!

- How's your swim jig game? Are you missing the boat on this incredible technique?? A lot of people are! Most anglers don't realize that a swim jig imitates small baitfish and panfish better than a swimbait! Here's everything you need to know...
Swim jigs come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and they're not created equal. Understanding head shapes and hook strengths is just as important as understanding the difference between a squarebill and a deep diving crankbait. Pay close attention as Matt details his jig and trailer pairings so you can use the best combination for your fishing conditions.
Below you'll find links to the exact jigs, trailers, and gear that Matt discussed in the video. He's even included his favorite weights and colors for each. All the links go directly to Tackle Warehouse where you can see detailed photos and descriptions of each item.

Underwater swim jig video..?
While I love swim jigs, I’m still waiting on the South America videos. Love your stuff!!
Glad to hear someone else who throws only swimbaits on swimjigs. I never understood the craw trailer thing. If I want a bait to swim , it’s getting a swimbait.
I think some do it because they can just slow down and fish it on the bottom when they don't bite it will it swims they don't have to tie on another jig. And then if they need to they can still put a swim bait on it. I think so far the swim jig has gotten me more consistent big bass than any other lure or bait I've thrown. But so far it's just been with a swim bait on the back for me. And I think I'll keep it that way. No sense in changing what works for me. If I'ma throw a craw I'll t-rig.
No one puts more time in explaining the best baits & rod & reels, than tacticalbassin, why would you listen to any other, these guys know their stuff! Thanks Matt!🎣
Thanks for the support!
I said to myself the other day, I hope Matt puts out another swim jig video! Thanks for this video Matt
Best swim jig vid out there. 30+ mins of great informational content.
You guys got me into swim jigs and it’s a staple in my rotation now, still learning from you two all the time. Great video Matt! Thank you!
Love swim jig fishing! Always looking for different pointers thanks for the video!
As always, Matt, you give out great knowledge . Another great video.
Great info Matt as always, MUCH appreciated and thanks!!
Matt, this may be one of your best videos, and believe me I have seen many. Thanks for saving us all a lot of time and money.
I love the diversity of the swim jig. I have caught fish casting and reeling, slow bumping on the bottom, and flipping.
Good stuff as usual! Swim jig is at the top of my favorite type of fishing.
Thank you for going in-depth and thank you for being the pioneer and blazing the trail for us ❤️❤️
Thanks for all the useful info, fellas! It’s just about spawning season here in South Jersey. I’m ready to do some flippin’ this weekend! 🤙🏻
Just had the best day of fishing in my life with a couple of these swim jig combos.. you’re awesome
Love the swimjig strike!Something about that jig hook. Great content as always!
Great video of much needed info I will be using the next day I’m out. I bought the California swim jig with gambler trailer and I can tell you it makes a difference
Great info Matt! Looking forward to some more jet boat videos this summer! 😉 So many great skinny rivers around your area and east TN.
Always look forward when a new video drops. Keep them videos coming
Love the passion after all the time.youve been doing this. Thx for the info
I love the gill pattern kvd swimjigs with a 360gt swimbait body on the back it's such a beautiful imitation of that gill we all look for and the bass here in New York absolutely go nuts for it. Also been getting into throw a weighted bladed 4/0 trokar hook with the kvd swim-n-shiner swimbait on it I caught a fat 5lber about 3-4wks ago here in NY while it was still pretty cold 🤘🏻🤘🏻 I've learned so much watching this channel
I am a swim jig guy and love the information given. being from the north, regular and finesse swim jigs are the ticket.
Man I always learn so much with your videos. It's very clear how passionate you are on fishing experience. I really enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work your one of the best on you tube. Till the next one .primo
Swim Jig fishing, WITHOUT the crazy rod movement?! This is the JUICE we need! Thanks for all of the knowledge Matt. Going to have to buy the finesse swim jig with the Swammer. That bait, I just used for the first time today on a Beast hook and man does that thing LOOK GOOD. Can't wait to have it on a swimbait.
Thanks Matt. Glad you came around to the lighter swim jigs. This is where I live and alot of the country also. I still think your missing out not using any craw trailers but maybe it's just geographic conditions.
Hey Matt thanks for the great video I live in Missouri and finesse swimjig is the one I'm going to use. I really didn't know which dirty jig's swimjig to use now I do . And I didn't know what kind of trailer to use thanks for simplifying it for me excellent video. The knowledge you have is unbelievable. GOD bless you and your family.
Matt! Thank you for this im a new freshwater fisherman in central Florida. These pointers really helped my game out!
I love swimjigs and im catching a ton of fish right now. Im fishing it deep and not in cover at all. You’re giving me good ideas.
Great info.I really enjoyed it.
This is the best swim jig video I have seen.
Thank you for the very educational knowledge.
Great video, thanks for sharing.
Great stuff as always !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was just thinking, "it's about time for a swim jig vid." Thanks for the stuff.
OUTSTANDING VIDEO MATT!!
Extremely interesting and informative video. I like.
Thanks!
Thank you Sir! Great video!
Just came across this gem, love the detail for finesse jigs and trailers.Surprized you didn’t have small ragetail menace in there.
You gave me inspiration to make a lure in 2 colors and uses several different types trailers, there is definitely a place in the market for it but not sure how to get it mass produced so guess I'm going to keep em to myself unfortunately. Thx for the inspiration to do something lil different I seen wasn't available in any local store. Thx guys!! 🙏
First of all, before I even watch this video. GREAT ARTICLE in the MLF Bass Magazine in regards to Swimbaits. Very well presented, simplified and to the point, Excellent Job Guys! THANKS
Thank you!! We really appreciate the support!
Love this channel! Matt said and it’s really that simple at the 32 minute mark 😂😂😭😭
Glad to hear I am not the only person who just use a swimbait trailer on my swim jig.
Very informative video. Thanks
To quote Will Gere in Jeremiah Johnson...YOU NAILED 'ER CLEAN!
Thanks for simplifying and saving us the trouble with hours of experimentation. Dirty Jigs and Missile...I'm all in, don't try to tempt me with any others, I mean it!
Thanks for the support!
Another great trailer I have been using for years that has that roll you talked about is the Yum Pulse .
This video is so well explained
The California swim jig is how i found tacticalbassin and I've lost count of how many years I've been following you guy and you're still pumping out fire tips & information
That's awesome! Thank you for the support!
Awesome video!!
I finally caught my first swim jig fish after a summer fall and late winter of fishing this spring. It was on a dead fall while I was picking out a back lash immediately after casting 😂. Followed up on a second Biggin with the same technique. Hopefully I have some confidence in the lure now to keep it going.
Awesome information 👍
Im obsessed with the 6th sense divine swim jig honestly... thing works amazing for my application
What trailer you use?
Awesome tutorial....Enuff said.
I say this each year the yum pulser Is a great swim jig trailer , foil and the gill are the best . Really gets 2nd 3rd action to it . Next is the largo for me because I can make it dart out and come back .
I always use the strike king tour grade swim jig 3/8 sun gill with a Houdini little dipper trailer with great success, I admit that I have to work my rod a little
Hey Matt check out the osp headshaker, it’s been a favorite of mine on the California swim jig!
I landed 2 7lbers in a 2-hour window using Matt’s tips, he really knows what he’s talking about!
My goto has always been strike king tour grade swim jig 3/8 bluegill with 3.75 rage swimmer green pumpkin. Agree on avoiding keitech trailer the rage swimmer makes it flares and roll nice like you described!
Have you tried the untamed tackle swimjig? They are phenomenal around docks and wood. Great hook, compact and best non screw head keeper
Clearly the reason the Mrs. doesn't get as much video time is she catches more and has a dynamic hook-set. You go girl!
Good video boss keep up the good work
Hey Matt- just a bit of thanks to you for your recommendations on those finesse swim jigs. I absolutely slayed them tonight at the local pond on the Missile Baits/Swammer combo 💰. Oh and the Orochi helped too!😅
Wow Matt, that was an excellent video!!! One of the best tutorials I've seen so far. Not a load of jig heads or trailers either just about six. If fishing areas where say 2 to 5 lbs. are caught would you use the finesse swim jigs and in the rivers as well?? I like using the swim jig and glad to learn more about how to use them the proper way!!! Thanks again!!! Stay Safe & God Bless!!!!
Went out today after I watched this last night and slayed them in the grass👌🏻
Florida girl here! You sold me on the California Swim Jig and the gambler trailer! Going to buy a few now! I love your passion for fishing! Thanks for the awesome content Matt!!! 🙌🎣💪
#1tacticalbassinfan
I know swim jigs are a shallow water technique, but as of late I've seen videos of guys using a swim jig out deep. Have you done that and what style and weight would you choose and the trailers as well. You guys have upped my fishing and tournament finishes. Your knowledge is incredible. Thank you for all your efforts to get us proper information
The 3/4oz cal swimjig is no joke its a tank great bait for sure 👌
We love Gambler Lures in the north too! They catch quality fish.
Thanks, going to start. I use a swim bait often but need weedless
The gambler GOAT swim jig is the best
Love me some 6th sense swimjigs with a megabass spark shad trailer
Have several of the California swimjigs, but haven’t had any luck with them. But, I’ve been throwing them with a Keitech.
Morning Matt, you absolutely had me LOL the whole time in this video. You definitely Geek out when it comes to anything jig related. 😅
Im in need of some advice I live in California and want to use swim jigs on these deeper clear reservoirs but struggle with where and when deep shallow, colors.
Any recommendations on Don Pedro & McClure with swim jigs...
Thanks for all your helpfull videos, you both have changed the fishing game for weekend anglers like me.
Been hammering them on the swim jig lately, Got a real nice one yesterday, and with a swimbait on the back, only way I fish them too. #BlackandBlue
I like the soapbox history lesson we need more of those for documented fishing history keep up the great work I actually did the same thing Put my rod down And reeled a Wally diver and caught a bunch of Saugeye At a dam at the location where a wall below the dam fell off but the actual wall is a ledge you can walk on this wall I call it was a great place for fish to ambush prey
Great video. Bassmd
Surprised to not see the 6th Sense braid swimjig on here! It has a screw lock keeper and paired with a 3.5 largo shad, it shakes and shimmys like crazy and draws the attention of the big ones!
A fantastic job on the breakdown of the Swim Jig ! Thanks for opening my eyes to a few things I did not know about the Dirty Jig lineup. I actually live in Valdosta Ga which is about 40 minutes from the Dirty Jigs office. I'm going to try and go visit them. Love using those jigs when I'm in Central Florida where I have been fishing a lot lately. I do have a question : Do you rig the Swimbait trailer with paddle tale pointing down or up ? Thanks for sharing all your knowledge. Been watching and learning for years.
I fish a 1/2 oz no jack swim jig..A gambler ez vibe 3.75 is a killer trailer, it makes the whole bait wobble like crazy.
Top of the mornin
Man I love the D-Walker but I wish they had more colors. You ever use the Jenko Booty Shaker for a bigger profile trailer? It's awesome. They come in 3.5", 4", 5" and 6".
There is one you may not know about. It is built in Canada but sold a lot in Florida. Company name is Weapons of Bass Destruction. Amazing swim jig. Best colour trailer here is the sprayed grass small skinny dipper. Hands down the best along with the bluegill Rage Menace. We have a ton of Gills here so the strike king bluegill skirt is all you need. Incredible
I really only use 4 trailers for bluegill colors I use a rage menace or rage craw for Shad colors I use a easy shiner or swing impact I know you guys love the dirty jigs I wish you would design a jig like the trash master one of the best jig designs I’ve ever seen
Though it’s not what people generally think of when they think of a swimjig. I really dig the Zman Midwest finesse swim jig. It’s got the perfect weedguard and a lighter that normal wire hook similar to that of the SMH jighead and same keeper. What I really like about it is it’s heavy enough for a medium action baitcaster but still gets in the thicker grass just fine. I really like pairing a baby goat on the It and just burning it though grass and even wood.
I just picked those up to try as a BFS Swim jig. I'm thinking about trying a Strike Kng Ned Rage cut'r. I used it on the Z man minimax chatterbait and it worked great.
What kind of trailer do you like on it?
@@Milehighsnake98 I use the zman GOATZ,slim swimz, zman 3inch grub, and even the trd bugz as a chunk style trailer.
@@cameronpoulton9490 I use the Zman baby goat, slim swimz,3 inch zman grubz and trd Bugs as a sort of chunk trailer. But I think the yum craw chunk in the smaller size would be a great choice as well!
Matt, have you tried a Kickin Zako on a swim jig? Seems like it would make a great bluegill profile, just dont know if the kick is enough.
Good
My head is spinning. I am glad you didn't go in depth. Great job as usual.
I've had very good results using a swim jig in a bluegill pattern this year I'm using more colors like shad in a white off white and it works my spinnerbait's are jealous i first learned to swim a jig when one day i was retrieving my jig swimming it back to the boat when I caught a bass right at the boat that was years ago been swimming them back every since.
Have you used the Daiwa Rapids swimmer? I just bought it and it swims very level if that's what action / non action you want lol
I’m going to be the possible odd man out. I use a standard football or round head jig with a swim bait trailer. Its been amazing how well it works and I don’t have to buy a different swim jig head. As you know necessity is the mother of invention. I ran out of swim jig heads one day. Ended up using the jigs I had in the boat.
Started fishing swimjigs at night to go along with the large spinnerbaits that I normally fish...they work great when the spinnerbait is not happenin, my biggest issue with swimjigs are that I fish a ton of rock and they get hung pretty easy, do you have any suggestions for a swim jig that has a football style head that would bounce of rocks better. That being said, I have caught some alot of very big bass on the dirty jigs head with a yamamoto swimbait trailer in the rocks but I am going to try the Xzone you talked about, I like their craw alot.
Thank you
Surprised the MBR didn’t make it to the favorites for the Swim Jig set up.
You should do an in depth sit down seminar style video specifically for Pond fishing. I’d bet that a large amount if not majority of your viewers are probably either younger kids/guys without boats trying to learn as much as possible about fishing. Us bank/pond fisherman don’t have a lot of information directed at us.
Hi Matt. Hope you’re doing well. I had a question for you, I just picked up an expride b 7’2 MH Glass chatter bait rod, and I was wondering what Shimano reel you would recommend?
Do you think I should use a Levante Diablo spec r or a 7' heavy rod for swim jigs?
Would the XH 7'6" Expride work with the 6-8" Magdraft? I know you mentioned the Zodias 7'9" XH in that video. I was thinking the Expride might double as a pitch flip combo also. I like to have setups that I can double up uses for. I have a 7'2" Expride A I am throwing my 6" MD on right now.
What trailer is best for the new compact swim jig from dirty jigs? Preferably something that doesn’t require the Alabama shake because I personally don’t like that retrieve. So far your recommendations for trailers on these jigs has been perfection for me and I trust your opinions on it. I like all the sizes I have now but that compact kinda has me thinking it would be the best of the standard and finesse in the northern areas like Indiana and Michigan. That 5/16 compact swim jig looks real good, just need to figure out the best trailer for the secondary action. Any help you can provide would be appreciated.
The chatterbait has been my weapon of choice this early spring here in the midwest. I would say 70% of my bass have been on a bladed jig.
Matt, have you ever used the Keitech swing swimmer swim jig or the keitech model III swim jig? Keitech says to use it with the 4.8 swing impact, I was wondering if you've tried it with any other swimbaits? My lake is a constant level lake and has a ton of nasty algae all along the bottom, along with hydrilla.
