Hiking Mt. Longonot With Kids (13.4kms): Is It Possible?

- Mt. Longonot (2,776m high) is an awesome place to visit. It packs an interesting combination of physical challenge, great views, a big extinct volcano crater, wild animals like buffaloes, a short distance from Nairobi (1 hr 54 min - 83.7 km), campsites and more.
It is a popular hiking destination that is classified as moderate. It's always teeming with people but not so much as to make it annoying.
I woke one morning and decided to hike the mountain, but this time with the kids. They love nature and being outdoors. They have travelled almost from birth with the youngest having from 3 months of age. This time I was alone with them with their mom being busy with projects. I was not sure how I will make but deep down (and knowing the kids well), I knew that we would have one heck of an adventure.
We camped at the Oloongonot Campsite and woke up fresh and hungry to wrestle the mountain. A good idea that ensured that we all fresh and had a good sleep while able to make an early start for the hike before the super hot Longonot sun started burning everything on its wake.
Yes, we hiked to the top of the crater, around the crater rim and back, a total of 13.4 km (8.4 miles). And a great hiking thirst was born.. Enjoy
