  • After camping at Oloongonot Campsite at the Mt. Longonot National Park and hiking to the top of Mt. Longonot with the kids, the hiking bug bit us again. Plus their mum had joined us.
We decided to tackle the slightly less steep but longer Mt. Kilimambogo (2,145 m high) (19.6km to the summit and back) situated inside Ol Donyo Sabuk National Park in Machakos but close to Thika Town.
Mt. Kilimambogo is the opposite of Mt. Longonot but an equally awesome place to visit. It packs an interesting combination of physical challenge, cool and green forests, nice views, no crater though, wild animals like buffaloes, a short distance from Nairobi(2 hr 4 min -73.7 km ), with 4 campsites and more.
It is a popular hiking destination that is classified as beginner-friendly. It's always teeming with people but not so much as to make it annoying. It's also drivable to the summit a good murram road.
The kids had had a taste of hiking and loved it, were excited to tackle another mountain. After having a grand time camping and campfire stories at the Turaco Public Campsite (the biggest of the Park's 4 campsites), and a night of heavy downpour; our hike up was thoroughly enjoyable because of the cool, crisp air, shade from the thick forest canopy and smooth road.
The distance of 19.2km to the summit and back gave us quite a workout but we never gave up.. Enjoy
