If you are shopping for one of these, avoid the 2012-2015 model years. They have timing chain guide issues and you will lose your engine at some point. Mine went at 115k miles, BMW refused to do anything even though it had a SULEV warranty in California. $6700 repair with a used engine. Apparently 2016 is when BMW addressed it.

  • @HybridEnergy

It feels quick because of the short gearing, watch the acceleration. 2nd gear only does 40-50 mph and you have to hit 3rd gear to finally rev it to 60mph for that well fought for 5.5 0-60. A 335i will hit 60mph on the other hand in 2nd gear and will feel maybe the same but the stop watch will say otherwise believe me.

I don't understand all these moaning and b*tching about BMW's new electric power steering by some of the American auto jounalists. While it's lighter in effort compared to the old hydraulic system, there's no denying that it's a much, much polished and advanced one in terms of its slickness and its very much welcomed lack of unnecessary feedback, such as the excessive steering kickback and other "antiquated" sensations. I, for one, very much prefer the steering characteristics of my F30 335i to that of the E90 335i which I used to own previously. And I'm not alone in this, either. From what I've read and watched, almost ALL reputable British and European automotive journalists feel the same way about it. I just don't understand why only American counterparts must require unnecessarily heavy steering effort in cars to call it a superior steering feel. Can you say, "UNCIVILIZED"? LOL!!!

+6PERRYFAN4 my guess would be because you don't get the traditional feedback from the wheel.

+carolasmx I currently drive a F30 335i with M Sport package. And trust me. I get all the feedback from the steering that I need, and I don't think I need any more of it. The truth is the 3 series now offers all kinds of combinations for just about everybody, and you'll find something that suits your sporting needs if you can afford to spend extra bucks.

6PERRYFAN4 ya I'm surprised how affordable a 2013-14 used 3 series is. Might grab one.

Well, that's because the F30 is a mothership. I go back and forth between an F30 328i and a E46 325i. The F30 definitely has more power, however, the E46 has the very communicative feedback and the sound, basically a soul the F30 does not have. So I'm basically torn between the two because the F30 has all the technology and power I want but the E46 just has that certain driving feel I want, what BMW used to be. Now, I could drive the F30 in sport mode to help with the steering feel but the transmission also becomes different and makes the ride become rougher which I don't want. The reason why the driving feel isn't that great though could be because the F30 doesn't have the sports package but the E46 does. Maybe coilovers need to be added in the future but for now the F30 is just a comfortable car with lots of room compared to the E46 and is the luxury cruiser the family uses, especially since it's nearly fully loaded with everything except the sports package and a few little things like no sun blinds in the back etc.

The only thing that scares me about newer BMWs is that they have a plastic electric waterpump that's a bit difficult to get to if it fails. A good traditional mechanical waterpump with a metal impeller would be better. I would lease a Bimmer and get a new one every 3 years.

You really can't predict that... German brands will always have their little electrical issues here and there. It's one of the things you must put up with when you own one. Just remember that when you purchase or lease a BMW, you get free scheduled maintenance for 4 years or 50k and a comprehensive warranty for the same time period. Most people who buy one new simply replace it with another one before the warranty runs out anyways.

A proper gearbox yes. I dunno wth ppl are complaining about saying the 8AT is superior. That manual transmission is a joy to drive...and yes I drive stick in harsh 401 toronto traffic with no problem. A friend of mine bought his 335i with a stick and did the CDV delete. oh man would I disagree with someone preferring the 8AT over the 6MT. oh well, this is the internet, to each his own.

I drove one of these things as a loaner from the dealership. I had the same reactions to the electric steering and autostart. I have a 95 3 series (e36) so I know the difference. I also have a 2008 Z4 3.0si coupe, which has electric steering, but it isn't as weak on that version, especially when you put it in sports mode.

All these ppl in here talk about the pickup, that is not what you buy a BMW for. It's about the handling and feel. Having an inline 6 produces much flatter torque curve and gives you more power at the top then a turbo-4 that runs out of power at the top. I'm sure these make good daily drivers but for track and spirited driving I prefer top end and handling.

I have a 2008 E90. Straight 6 with a buttery smooth transmission. THATS the way it should be. However, because I don’t drive like a grandma, the MPG in town is horrendous. But honestly mpg is not why you buy a BMW. You buy one to be one with the car and road.

i heard Audi has really stepped up their game in the newer cars and are now more reliable than MB and BMW.
