Just bought a used 2017 320i XDrive and I’m super impressed with it. I don’t understand how everyone tries to compare this to the higher 3 series models. It’s a great car and has plenty of power. I realized something after purchasing this. Having a higher powered car is kind of worthless. Every time I place mine in sport mode and take off, I’m waiting for police sirens to go off. So having a car that can do 0 to 60 a second or two faster doesn’t make sense to me because you’re just asking for a ticket.
This is a joke right? I never understood why people would buy a base BMW let alone a 320i. Buy a Civic or a Mazda and get the same performance, better fuel economy and reliability while having an extra 5k in your pocket
After owning the 320i from 2013 to present. This is what i learnt: - Infotainment system inside the car (base one given is horrible, UI wise as well as search wise takes forever to find an artist, loses connection with the iPOD, have to reset it) - 184 bhp, is good, comfort mode is decent, sport mode is the best way to drive any BMW. The full potential and driving experience only comes out in the sport mode. -Sport mode is fun for curvy roads, and lane merges. Here in Peru the lowest in the range is the 318i, it has 3 cylinders and makes 136 hp. 0-100 kph in 8.9 secs and costs almost 40k, while the 320i is almost 50k.
I just love your reviews of base cars. This is the car I can actually afford. Thank you for the great reviews. In Canada there is an 8000$ difference in price with 328
I got my 320Ix with sport package , heated seats and moonroof. It was a program car with 4,000 miles that dropped $5,000 off sticker bringing it down to around $33,000. Add in the 5 year 50,000 mile service deal and this car works for a regular buyer. Gas milage has come in at around 30 miles a gallon and thats great. The car is fun to drive and is really peppy that is just fine for most drivers. I traded in my 2011 328ix with a six that was a bit faster but gas millage was much worse. This model is bigger and fun to drive that makes it a great car for the average driver looking for that experience only a BMW can deliver. In 2 years I`ll do the same thing and keep driving a BMW that makes me happy in my retirement years.
idk, the 320i really just isnt it. i personally own a 328, and the 320is are way to slow, and not to mention it has no steering feedback :/ the 320i is just a bit boring, without the extra power that you get from the 328i. great ride, and amazing fuel economy for what it is, but overall the 320i is pretty disappointing
Drove a 320i and then drove a 328i (both were 2013 model year) and i couldn’t believe how much quicker the 328 was. I wont use the word fast but its more power than most people will ever even use.
I am seeing more of these 320i's here in L.A. now. Some will give up comforts or money just to say, "I am a BMW owner." And there are plenty of them in Southern California.
I understand your emphasis on the matter that BMW should refine some things in this car. However, you can't expect every single detail of the car to be top notch sport/luxury! This is an entry level, and lowest costing 3 series of the 3 series spectrum.
i love the f30! my family rented it when we went on vacation to florida and i instantly fell in love. it's beautiful and perfect! i want one when i go to college!
My family just ordered a 328i xDrive as a winter/daily errand kind of thing, and it's Alpine white with black leatherette. That alone saves about $2000 and the leatherette in the F30 is actually quite good. It's also got navigation and the harmon/kardon stereo. Total cost is only a little more than the 320 you have there, if you can get over all the things you've decided every car at a certain price point "should have." And for the record, the 328 doesn't come standard with a rear view camera.
To be honest, we like the idea of the 320i with the 6-speed manual. We just think it's still overpriced once you add in the usual options to make it more appealing. At $41 grand, this should have Nav, HIDS, a back-up camera, and the sport package.
Currently driving a 320i. I agree that the silver plastic wasn’t a good call however I will say on my car with the black leather interior it looks much better in contrast
Thanks for the review, I'm a BMW fan and I test drove a 328 and was stunned by the lack of steering feel. My Mini has electric steering too but much more feeling and much heavier. I really hope they fix this, the steering is so light it feels like a Suburban.
I've gotta say that if the only downside in the interior is a few trim pieces, BMW did a darn good job. Unless you pay $140k, not everything will be cushioned like a couch. I personally love the idea of the 320i. More than adequate power, and than capable in 98% of driving situations. Sure the steering may be a downgrade from the E90, but BMW more than made up for that with the MPG. I don't think I'm alone in saying that my daily drive isnt on a twisty back road.
Me too but first they need to improve that CUE system. I know that has nothing to do with driving characteristics of the car but as an entire package that needs to be at the level iDrive is at now. I love the edgy styling of the ATS and it seems to have excellent driving characteristics along with tons of standard features.
Great car for the 17th year old birthday gift. You see a lot of 335i and even M3 driven by teens in Vancouver. I guess when you get to college you can get a M5 or M6.
Matt3667 They’re such pieces of junk. Especially the early ones. The N20 with its timing chain is the biggest problem. I’ve got a 2012 328i that I’ve had since about 44k miles and I really don’t like it. The fit and finish is garbage and the steering/suspension tuning/handling is so mediocre for a BMW. I regret not getting an E90. Those had a phenomenal straight six even in the 328i.
I agree with you about the RWD. But let's face it, by the time you add all the stuff that should come standard (xenons, leather, a stereo that doesn't suck), the price is pretty ridiculous.
Great review. I especially agree with the implicit recommendation to get the Sport Line 6-sp manual 328i... that's what I got and absolutely love it. It is true that the steering is too light on the non-Sport Line models. My Sport Line's steering is also relatively light compared with the E90 or E46 but has a nice weight to it and good feedback nevertheless.
Haven't driven a BMW in years so i honestly can't say how the driving compares to the cost. I say this because with what you get in a Mazda 6 i doubt if i would spend that much on this car. I guess that is the price you pay for the nameplate.
I think he may be referring to the European optional nav system. There's the professional and the business satnav. The US market ones can only be ordered as professional
Look at the figures this machine makes, this has the amount of power that you need and is very fuel efficient. If people wanted more power, I think they would buy an M5.
Daniel San Really m5? Skipping the 328i,335i,550i and straight to the m5 huh? You are forgetting that 320i is quite heavy and the reason why mpg are not so great for such low power figures.
+Daniel San true 180bhp is great for this car. it is well balanced and a pure driving machine. Best bang for the buck if you plan to do a cash purchase on a car to be used for the next 25 years. I own this model and don't think i'll ever buy another car unless i'm forced to.
Same 0-60 as the E90 325i. Steering is lighter. Power is probably better down low in revs so it feels a little faster. Real world if you lay off the options and just get the sport package it's a $33,000 car.
Good review. You are spot on about the steering difference. I like the steering much better in my 2007 328 xi than this one. I got to drive a new 328 x drive for a few days while I was getting some work done. I wasn't impressed. The start/stop feature is a bit annoying ( it can be turned off). The 3.0 six seems much more fluid than the turbo 4. But the steering is the pits compared to the E90.
I test drove a 2013 320i m series package today and it was really nice it's small engine has plenty of pick up definetly feels like more than 180hp to me only thing I wish was that they came with navigation I might lease this car but probably wouldn't buy it
Hi! Great review, gonna get this one soon as a company car. I also went for the business navigation (so without the built-in HDD for music etc..) Do you know if the screen is the same compared to the one in your review? Or it the screen bigger? Thanks!
Americans are sooooo power hungry. In Europe, a 2 liter engine (without turbo) is considered rather high. For just driving to work and back, a 320i is enough. In some countries like Iran, domestic manufacturers' largest engines are only 1.8 liters
I noticed you've highlighted 3 modes : Eco, Comfort, Sport. How is the comfort of the ride (stiffness) if you put it in comfort mode? What about time from 0-60km/hr?
Quick correction.. a backup camera isn't standard on a 328i Either :P Other than that great video! I drove both the 320i and 328i (currently own the F30 328i) and honestly, the extra money is worth it, its a lot faster and the interior uses better materials. i.e., on mine the aluminum trim is actual metal haha. Also having the sport package makes a big difference in terms of handling too since it rolls in the Sports suspension. and Lighting pack is of course a must :)
honestly i dont think its worth picking fights with people over how fancy their corolla is LOL. however IMO there needs to be a line between drive dynamics and price. 41 grand can work wonders over in the japanese luxury department with maybe even better drive dynamics and double the value. for me its 328 and up is where the car's at.
I agree that silver dashboard is terrible. BTW, I get sea sick when you rock back and forth while circling the car. You say the horsepower feels inadequate, but how does the power delivery and performance numbers compare to the 6 cylinder E46?
Brian Gleeson Your avatar photo is a picture of a sailboat and you're sitting here crying about getting sea sick watching this video? Grow some balls, dude.
Okay, so there is a sunroof! So the 32,000 or so starting, the options added nearly 10k more to 42,000 lol! I didn't expect the silver plastic park and the cheaply styled steering wheel. I think I'll take the 335 overall. That's just my opinion. Is BWM trying to soften their ride?

uh, this new 320i IS turbocharged. As the reviewer correctly said, it's a detuned version of the 328's engine. Next time use Google... a quick trip to BMW USA's website will confirm it's a 2 litre turbo engine in the 320. Cheers
I have a 2012 328 and I HATE the new steering. They ruined the whole feel of driving a BMW. I'm so disappointed in them. I've owed 5 BMWs and this is least favorite.
Wise Sloth $32.000 actually, the camera on BMWs is expensive as is integrated with sensors and unlike cheap Chinese made cameras on cheaper cars. I got one on my Yaris and its not quite good and misses out on parking lines.
Zak K Nope, BMW is known to dime and nickle for every silly package option. Nothing to do with cheap or integrated/sensors. Many cars have decent quality cameras/parking sensors that are way below 40k.
Sounds like a plan. The only crappy thing is you might have to remove the tune everytime you take the car in for service as long as it's under warranty otherwise it might be voided. BMW voided one guy's warranty because he was playing burnt CDs. Perhaps there was more to the story.
Would i be able to make a switch to 1 exhaust to 4? Obviously I would get that done myself amd would it look nice? How much would that be? I plan on getting this car before 2014 ends.if anyone can please help
There's no desire for this car in terms of motoring ability, pleasure or even luxury capabilities. And I don't mean to say that motoring pleasure or engineering is devoid from cars with smaller motors, but the traits of BMW's, weight balance, handling, and power are based in its racing heritage and not its marketing ability
There is a price premium for germans, always has been and likely will be. $41k on the 2014 IS doesn't bring nav either, unfortunately. Most high end luxury brand buyers honestly don't care for value. If they can afford it, they buy it. For those who want a value minded luxury car, brands such as Acura and Buick exist. However, Lexus and BMW dominate the sales charts. According to the numbers, luxury buyers buy what they want and not what is economically sensible.
Ok let's put this as simple as it goes. if your coming from a Japanese car the ones you have listed you will think this car is unreliable but if you are comfortable with doing alittle more matanience then it won't be to you. It's just like every other car really
failandprevail those brands with the exception of infiniti will be more reliable. however the naturally aspirated inline 6's in the older bmw's are a hidden, underrated gem. my current 2011 bmw 528i with the naturally aspirated N52 motor has 101km and its still run just as well when i first bought it. i also had an e36 1995 bmw 325is that i ran to 270km before someone wrecked it.

Is plastic silver painted because you don’t want metal on the dashboard in case of an accident.
you don't get a spare tire because the tires can go 100 miles even while flat.
Honfy Lam how do you know it’s flat. After the 100 miles are up.
Thanks for the review. Can you keep an eye out for a 328d to review when they arrive? Long roof preferred...
honestly i dont think its worth picking fights with people over how fancy their corolla is LOL. however IMO there needs to be a line between drive dynamics and price.
Awesome review!
Very good video, did you make any vid about Renault Latitude? if yes show me the link, please. Thank you

Great review!
uh, this new 320i IS turbocharged. As the reviewer correctly said, it's a detuned version of the 328's engine.
Next time use Google... a quick trip to BMW USA's website will confirm it's a 2 litre turbo engine in the 320. Cheers
Excellent review.
great review, i'm considering this car for a lease
the only thing that I feel differentiates this from a GLI is rear wheel drive
Pedro D. Avalos gli is quicker it has 200hp
good job man!!love it!
One thing is wrong v6 is still an option of plus 4 no turbo or turbo
I have a 2012 328 and I HATE the new steering. They ruined the whole feel of driving a BMW. I'm so disappointed in them. I've owed 5 BMWs and this is least favorite.
Should've gotten the 335I, instead of the low end 328.:)
It wasn't low end. It was fully loaded modern line
42,000$ car and no back up camera. 14,000 Nissan Micra SV has a backup camera. Back up camera costs 120$. Why BMW? WHY!?!
Civic SI 9th gen has backup cam and it's 21k bucks
WiseSloth ForBernieSanders I guess sloths can't turn their heads?
Wise Sloth 14,000 Nissan is an ugly POS. This is a German engineered vehicle
I got a 2014 320xi does anyone know why I don't have the handle lock thingy?
Liked and sub'd. Great review good sir. Also, nice car.
Great reviews
Was this a loaner? It has the dealer's name on the window like a loaner usually does...
for 41k BMW could have made the interior much nicer.
Lol they're worth like 13k now ahahahah
@@vitaliyvechirko8515 literally more than this.....
@@Kxifs depreciation is nice. Got my 2015 328i for 17k
@@Brazillianboi69 just got a 2018 340ix 34k
is it possible to retune the car to make power such as the 328i or the old 330i?
Do you guys have any plans to review the new impala?
Sounds like a plan. The only crappy thing is you might have to remove the tune everytime you take the car in for service as long as it's under warranty otherwise it might be voided. BMW voided one guy's warranty because he was playing burnt CDs. Perhaps there was more to the story.
Make a video of the diesel version as well please
i didn't say it isn't the benchmark. im saying that it isn't as far ahead as it used to be
Great overview.
Keep it up, good review.
Agreed. The traditional faux wood was also plastic. So it went from plastic wood to plastic silver trim - big deal? This guy has issues.
Would i be able to make a switch to 1 exhaust to 4? Obviously I would get that done myself amd would it look nice? How much would that be? I plan on getting this car before 2014 ends.if anyone can please help
randell torres please dont do that on a 320i. just buy a normal car
There's no desire for this car in terms of motoring ability, pleasure or even luxury capabilities. And I don't mean to say that motoring pleasure or engineering is devoid from cars with smaller motors, but the traits of BMW's, weight balance, handling, and power are based in its racing heritage and not its marketing ability
then what is the current benchmark?
There is a price premium for germans, always has been and likely will be. $41k on the 2014 IS doesn't bring nav either, unfortunately. Most high end luxury brand buyers honestly don't care for value. If they can afford it, they buy it. For those who want a value minded luxury car, brands such as Acura and Buick exist. However, Lexus and BMW dominate the sales charts. According to the numbers, luxury buyers buy what they want and not what is economically sensible.
I’m watching this in 2018 and it looks exactly like 2018 model car. :/ I’m getting a new 2018 bmw. Am I making a mistake.
If its still an F30 than yes, same generation pretty much the same thing with a few refinements.
Can you test drive one with a manual transmission?
Just a general question to anyone. How reliable is the 3 series relative to Japanese luxury brands(Lexus, Acura, Infiniti)?
Ok let's put this as simple as it goes. if your coming from a Japanese car the ones you have listed you will think this car is unreliable but if you are comfortable with doing alittle more matanience then it won't be to you. It's just like every other car really
Jonathan Washington Oil, brake pads, rotors, fluids, etc. don't concern me too much, but I've heard horror stories on suspension in particular.
failandprevail those brands with the exception of infiniti will be more reliable. however the naturally aspirated inline 6's in the older bmw's are a hidden, underrated gem. my current 2011 bmw 528i with the naturally aspirated N52 motor has 101km and its still run just as well when i first bought it. i also had an e36 1995 bmw 325is that i ran to 270km before someone wrecked it.
Great review brother... I am in the market for a used 2014 to 2016 bmw 320i for my wife.
Your rear passenger tire is touching the curb.
