It's not that he didn't want to marry the King's sister, it's that by saying yes he would be sentencing the sister's husband to death.
It ties back to his conversation with the King when he's told he can't just explain decisions away when confronting God by saying "virtue wasn't convenient at the time". Orlando's character did not want the guilt of deciding Guy's fate.

So, a "Lord" is something of a catch all phrase for nobility, with various levels of nobility. Bailien is a Baron, meaning that he held land directly from the King, and as such was moderately influential, with the level of influence going in or down based on a number of different factors such as the prosperity of his lands, number of troops he could call to the field, etc. That Bailien was also on the road meant he could charge extra taxes for those crossing the road, which gave even more influence.

Stories of the time suggest that he was essentially impervious to damage and wouldn't stop when wounded. Despite the fear and a religious war brewing between the Christians and the Muslims, both Baldwin IV and Saladin had a mutual respect for one another.

And the courage to defend others that cannot defend themselves. And goodness; what God desires, is both here(head) and here(heart). And by what you decide to do everyday you will be a good man. Or not. . ."
And the king's monologue "You see, none of us choose our end really. A king may move a man. A father may claim a son. But even if those who move you be kings or men of power, your soul is in your keeping alone. You cannot stand before God and say, 'But I was told by others to do thus', or that virtue was not convenient at the time. This will not suffice. Remember that."

Saladin, the commander of the Muslim armies was a real man.
And he did conquer Jerusalem, in 1187.
Just as we've seen in the movie.
Till our days we romanticize the figure of the knight, as a role model for on how to be a good man/soldier.
This concept, of the brave knight, came to Europe by crusaders, returning from Israel.
They brought back the story of the deeds of the great Sultan Saladin.
He was the role model for knightly behavior... somerhing we still teach our children. Almost 1000 years later.

It was a common stealth/subtle tactic to have the Lord dress up as a commoner, and have their Knight/Warrior pretend to be the Master.
This was to keep the nobleman's identity secret. The "servant guy" was the Master, he told his knight he wanted that horse and to fight Balien, then showed him mercy later in the field as a commander.

33:26 it is in regards to the talk he had with the king during the chess game. A king moves a pawn for his own benefits, but you as the pawn your soul is yours and yours alone, no king can take that from you. If he agreed to the marriage he would have conspired in a murder. although he may have slept with the woman, it is a far from being a conspirator of murder. Through his father and the king balian, and angel :) it changed his heart throughout the film from a lost man , who lost his family, and committed murder to man of purpose and defended and saved innocents of jerusalem.
The theme of the film is that regardless of religion there will always be those who want power and will do anything to get it. Even if they have to use religion for it, this does not make religion bad, no less than a sword or a gun being used by evil men. Through good leadership you can find peace, but there is always those in the shadows who will stab in you in the back to take it. Therefore peace is not possible as long as envy/jealousy exist. There will always be a shadow who will create disruption for the gain of power and there will always be the blind who leads the war, the casualities will always be the innocent who want peace they are usually the first to get betrayed but they will have there own soul in peace.

  • @jasonkehr3727

I'm sure it's been answered somewhere else, but Orlando did not want to marry the King's sister specifically because if he did, the King would have Gui executed. Orlando did not want that on his conscience, and as the King had told him earlier in the movie, "God may move a king, a king may move a man, but a man's soul is in his own keeping alone." Even though it was the KING basically giving him all he could ever want, there would be blood on Orlando's hands if he accepted.
I also second everyone in these comments suggesting the Director's Cut. It's long but does a little more to build the characters and explain the story. I love this movie dearly, it was so much fun watching somebody genuinely enjoy it. Thanks for the video.

One thing that changes how people think about the flogging of Renault Chatillon, is that it would have been well understood at the time that Leporacy was a sentence to death. At the time they thought it was a vengeful smiting directly from god, but it was also understood it was transmissible by touch, so when the king demands a kiss of peace, him and Renault were both aware it was a death sentence, even in this time and context. So when he actually gets killed, he was already running on borrowed time. And the reason he was gutted was because the sarisns thought christians were smuggling gold out of jerusalem by swallowing it.
This movie chose to get super ahistorical to make plot shit happen, but in some pretty important places it kept to history, and one of those places was with Saladin.
He did let the women and children leave Jerusalem, but they paid a head tax to leave or were enslaved. Saladin eventually let those slaves go because he did not want christians in Jerusalem after the war, for relatively fair reasons. Christians did massacre every person they could in Jerusalem during the second crusade.
Its a super stylized movie but it captures the spirit of the time pretty well and does a really good job of making it's heroes lovable and its villains absolutely detestable.
    Sick flick on the whole.

From my understanding people didn't like the original theatrical release but whatever the case dc version is my favorite and this is just a good movie all around. It's funny how from what 1998 to 2009 Orlando Bloom was in nothing but swording fighting movie's lotr, troy, potc, and this also. One last thing did anybody notice the sheriff that came to arrest Balian (Orlando Bloom) is the same actor we would all come to know as Jamie lannister in Got.

In reality, Balian was the chief negotiator between King Richard and Saladin. He was instrumental in ending the Third Crusade in a peace treaty. He never went back to France because he'd never been to France, he was born in the Kingdom of Jerusalem. That was his home.
Many of the Crusaders were descendants of Jews who converted to Christianity. They were genuine Christians, don't get me wrong, but their ancestors were expelled after the Romans sacked Jerusalem. For them it was going back to their ancestral home. That's why they fought for it with such passion.

The King is the King. He rules the Kingdom. The kingdom is then divided into smaller pieces, each ruled by a lesser, but still powerful lord, who owes allegiance (and taxes) to the King. You have simple Lords, like Balian's uncle, who are under a Baron. Which is what Balian is. Several Baronies make up a County, ruled by a Count. Which is what Jeremy Irons' character is. And the Counts owe allegiance directly to the King.

In Islam, you are prohibited from killing someone that you have fed or given drink. That's why Saladin said "I did not give the cup to you," so that everyone was aware.

You asked about lords. The feudal hierarchy goes Baron > Count > Duke > King > Emperor. A Baron typically controlled a small plot of land or a city and reported to a count. Titles were passed down by heritage. In this case, Godfrey was a Baron who was passing his title to his son, Balian.

You’re basing this ‘feudal hierarchy’ on a video game. In reality there wasn’t really any hierarchy. Kings may outstrip emperors, counts may outstrip dukes. It depends entirely on the lands and wealth they possessed, and every state had it owns quirks. Feudalism was a messy thing.

Lifeboats/rafts and lifewests are quite modern inventions. Same as learning to swim on purpose, i would even bet you can still find people working on ships that don´t know how to swim. When ship breaks in storm anything that can float and keep you on surface is a raft, even if it´s a bloated remains of your deceased friend.

A lord is a knight. Knights were land owners so yes in a way they were “kings” of their own property but they swore fielty to a main king. Usually it was customary for the king to make a knight but any knight could make another knight. Balyon was a bastard so he couldn’t inherit his fathers lands until he was knighted.

A Lord is like a Colonel or a Major, even a 1 star general. (There’s a lot if them) But they answer to the 4 star general, aka the king.

Well there are several different types of lord. Baronies, earls, duchies. A baron is the lowest within English nobility that can be called lord but as protocol dictates, they're normally called Baron.

Devin G, been a while since I brought up 'Hamburger Hill' Glad you watched it! If you liked it then may I recommend another piece of John Irvin's films; 'When Trumpets Fade' So far, no one has reacted to this so it would be interesting to see your take on that. It has tense atmosphere like in Hamburger Hill. It's a WWII film setting in Hurtgen Forest (Meat Grinder) in Germany 1944 where more than 34,000 US soldiers died for pretty much nothing and they're left to scrap the bottom of barrel to survive. It follows a Private who has to survive the hell regarding command structure, replacements, Germans and so on. Thanks for keep on watching!

Yeah Balian choosing not marry Sibylla because he didn't want to be responsible for having Guy murdered was just stupid. The Directors Cut explains better how Guy became king and why Balian thought killing him wouldn't be just but still it dominoed into war anyway.
That being said I still like him more as this character than him as his character in Troy😂

What I enjoy most about this film is that I've visited the locations of the crusader battles depicted in the film.
I'm lucky to live only one and a half hours drive from Jerusalem and just forty minutes drive from the Horns of Hattin.

A true sory, as a frenchy i can attest that most of this was factual. And did you notice *Edward Norton* in the movie? Yes, King Baldwin ( aka Roi Beaudouin) back then, which would later on become a Belgian king during my youth and was mixed with Germanic Saxon Gober- Gota monarchy. Loved your review!

@@jackbrian4929 if it’s abt the armies and christians of europe you are right. But the civilian christians and jews in jerusalem and the redt of the middle east sure loved the muslims. Jerusalem was a prosperous and peaceful coty under muslim rule. All three religions lived their lives and had their religions freely. While the european christians wanted a fully christian jerusalem they hated the muslims and the jews.

The real Balian was described as being "like a King" by the Arabs historic sources. He was actually at the Battle of Hattin and fought his way out when he saw it was hopeless.
He wrote to Saladin asking permission to go to Jerusalem to get his wife and children out before the siege. Saladin granted permission as long as he left right after.
When Balian saw the state Jerusalem was in, he apologized to Saladin for breaking his word, but he saw the city was in a pathetic state. The inhabitants begged him to stay and defend them. Saladin sent his own guards to escort Balian's wife and family to safety.

The princess was already married to Guy, for her to be available Guy had to die, there was no divorce in those days. The king would have had Guy executed. In those days executions for various crimes was commonplace, but they had no proof that Guy had committed a crime, so it would have basically been a murder. Balion (Orlando's character) refused to wed the princess because he did not want to be responsible for another murder (remember he had murdered the priest back in his village).

The thing I liked about this movie are the leaders (King Baldwin & Saladin) respected each other but the hubris of the priests on both sides was such they were agitating things and not holy men at all.
At the time Arabic medicine was better than European in some ways, hence Saladin offering Baldwin his physicians.
Just realized the actress for Saladin's sister also played the wife of Maximus is Gladiator. Cool.
    Great reaction!
