I hate to sound like my dad, but the music of today doesn't hold a candle to groups like Chicago. Their brass section was phenomenal. They have always ranked as one of my all-time favorite bands.
One of their best songs. Can trash the ballad and cheesy words all you want but the actual music is amazing, and the transition to "get away" is awesome.
All those hard work for us to entertain and not for the sake of money. Dang how the fuck we go from this kind of masterpiece to the shitty ass garbage music of today
Peter has a very strong voice for a tenor singer...one of the strongest ever. It can start sounding weak after performing several songs in a concert. He is a very rare talent with something incredible like a 5 octave vocal range in his prime.
Uh... make that 2 1/2: G2 - C#4 Song with the LOWEST pitch: Glory of Love (G2-C4) Song with the HIGHEST pitch: (I Wanna Take) Forever Tonight (G#2-C#4)
Fascinating. I can't sing or know anything about singing. I'm a drummer. Just curious if you were someone may answer this question for me. This seemed to be a prevalent practice in the 80s and 90s. What was it called exactly towards the end of the song where they would go up (I guess an octave?) while singing the same words, I'm assuming for dramatic effect, but it seemed to become a staple for a long time in pop songs.
You are so right Scoobgoose. I'm 71 and I still love pop music. Rock and roll is still with me and when I hear it my arthritis screams "Oh no, just don't go there" so I resist dancing with the sweeping brush. Music is ephemeral.
The Chicago brass section now don't get as many chances to show their stuff as they did in the old days, but this video shows how well they can still rock! Talented men indeed.
I saw them in Charlotte, N. C. back in the early '80s. I went to see them play this song and they did! The warm-up-band was Santana. Wow, what a combo of greatness! For Chicago's last set Santana come back on the stage and the groups combined to play each other's songs! Can you imagine the sound and talent on that stage?
Timeless! one thing about songs of their generation, is you can feel the songs in your gut, and they mean so much more. That's what this generation will never seem to accomplish. Songs now can be good, but there is nothing that I can say I will feel in my soul and 30 or 40 years from now. Chicago!
damn, four men on keyboards! Peter's voice, heart melting perfection. Chris Pinnick's solo - Gorgeous Getaway-Showstopper. Peter's behind; the finest. WOW!
Exactly! Four keyboards playing is practically unheard of in any group, especially one with vocals. A jazz or electronic music group perhaps, but nothing like this.
I SAW THEM AT IRVINE MEADOWS WITH MY FAMILY, WHEN PETER CETERA INFORMED THE AUDIENCE THAT THIS SONG WAS GOING TO BE IN THE MOVIE "SUMMER LOVERS", BEFORE THE MOVIE CAME OUT. I LOVE CHICAGO AND THE WILL ALWAYS BE THE ALL TIME BEST GROUP EVER. EVERY CONCERT THAT I HAVE ATTENDED, THEY HAVE A FULL HOUSE, & EVERYONE THERE ARE FROM EVERY GENERATION FROM THE TIME THEY STARTED AND ALL THE WAY TO 06/06/2011. PETER CETERA WILL ALWAYS BE THE ORIGINAL VOICE OF CHICAGO & TERRY KATH THE LEAD GUITARIST!
I saw Chicago live once in 1979 in New Zealand. First concert I ever went to. Loved it. They unexpectedly played the Beatles "Got To Get You into my life" and with all the necessary brass plus Pete Cetera's tenor vocals they did a great version of it. Even better was that another music festival was on at the same time and most of the hoons had gone there meaning that Chicago concert was relaxed and uncrowded.
That's one heck of an amazing horn section! The trombonist is absolutely on fire during "Get Away." I also like how the brass even did their little "doink" at 4:15.
Growing up, i thought it was a decent song.... until the first time I heard the full song with the "Get Away" outro... then, it became legendary to me ! 😁
@highman401 i was born in the 70s and grew up with this music in the 80s and it really is the best music era ever. today's stuff doesn't even come close !

I love it when radio stations play both tracks and don’t fade out after “Hard to Say ..” Meanwhile, I’d love to hear Michael McDonald on background vocals during “Break Away.”

13 years later, your statement stays true.
Your dad was right
And this was crappy Chicago too.
People are afraid of telling the truth because apparently being called a "Boomer" drives people to suicide.
I do believe your dad was very wise.
Man for a guy who never sings falsetto, I don't know how Cetera always did it, even with his range. That voice is immortal.

There are no words to describe how perfect PETER sings and performs this song , BEST voice in the world , only PETER !!!!!!
Even nowadays
Cetera's voice is so freaking good. Effortless.
Yeah, but I’ll never forgive him for leaving. Selfish ass.
tampajohn You should talk to a certain Mr. Robert Lamm about why Pete left.
pmerk36 ...Peter Cetera still sounds great....he IS 74,, by the way! Not many have a voice like his at that age. He still looks good, too!
Jessi Brunson yeah haha he’s 42 years older than me and still sings 10 times better...😭
Samuel Isaksson ... Hahaha...yeah, his voice is amazing! I love all of the older groups. I must have an old soul 😊
3:40 Getaway with James Pankow on trombone, Walter Parazaider on Sax, and Lee Loughnane on trumpet are BRUTAL!!! 🎺🎷👍
Oh yes i like it this sounds
It’s so powerful and there’s only THREE of them
It's my FAVORITE part of the song!!
So much energy!!
I love Peter's voice. I love the way he pushes out the high notes. I'm glad to have a similar range to his and be able to sing these songs myself.
Man I've always been jealous of people who has this range. Every time i try to sing this song the police were called 😭
Only one other guy I can think of with that kinda range and power, Brad Delp (Rest in Peace).

Hard To Say I'm Sorry
Chicago
Everybody needs a little time away
I heard her say
From each other
Even lovers need a holiday
Far away
From each other
Hold me now
It's hard for me to say I'm sorry
I just want you to stay
After all that we've been through
I will make it up to you
I promise to
And after all that's been said and done
You're just the part of me I can't let go
Couldn't stand to be kept away
Just for the day
From your body
Wouldn't want to be swept away
Far away
From the one that I love
Hold me now
It's hard for me to say I'm sorry
I just want you to know
Hold me now
I really want to tell you I'm sorry
I could never let you go
After all that we've been through
I will make it up to you
I promise to
And after all that's been said and done
You're just the part of me I can't let go
After all that we've been through
I will make it up to you
I promise to
You're gonna be the lucky one
When we get there gonna jump in the air
No one'll see us 'cause there's nobody there
After all, you know we really don't care
Hold on, I'm gonna take you there
