    In 1948, during the first week my mom's family were in Brantford after arriving from the UK, one of my Aunt's was out for a walk somewhere south of Colborne St and sort of stumbled upon a train like this coming down the same sidewalk she was using-she said if the Queen Mary had sailed by next she wouldn't have been more surprised :)

      Combined footpath and railway must be close to unique to Brantford. Seems too be many places in North America where the railway shares the road, lots of videos on YT of street running.
      Only a couple places left in New Zealand where the railway shares the road. Search "Kawakawa" on my channel for NZ street running. Search "Taramakau" for a bridge that the road and rail share the same deck on the bridge.

      Cool. All these old line operators like CN and CPR are giving up their lease and shortline operators are taken over these unprofitable lines. I wonder how the shortline operators are able to survive when the big guys walk away from these line. All of guelph as far as I know now are all ran by shortline operators. No CN or CPR around here.

      TRAINS_4_FUN
      Short lines generally don't pay the same hourly rate as class 1 railroads and the CN used an engineer and three train crew. A shortline would more than likely cut the train crew to 2 for this job as you really do need two trainmen on this job as a minimum. That's how short lines can make money where class 1's can't. A small shortline started up on an old shortline that dates back over 135 years. It's just over 18 miles long and after initiating service had one customer for the first three months but quickly gained customers when they discovered all they had to do was call the railroad they needed a switch and the railroad jumped right to it. They now are shipping over 7400 freight cars a year which ain't bad for a line that was shutdown for 14 years. Service still counts to customers.

    Do I understand correctly that typically railroad easements are usually no less than 10 feet on either side of the track???? So in essence does this railroad own apart of the street juxtaposed to its line??

    • @anthony851
      @anthony851  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +DetroitLove4U Unsure how wide the easement/corridor will be. Without a doubt the road must encroach, look how close the kerb is to the rail when the train is returning. 1435mm between the rails, the kerb is somewhat less than that. The loco extends out to the kerb as it enters the right hand curve.

      Thomas Shebat Both the train and pedestrians doing walking speed, shouldn't be much of a problem. Multiple level crossings along Clarence St, 5 level crossings plus carparks and a petrol station.

      more than likely when that track was laid there were very few houses near there and no sidewalk back then just track. A lot of track in Eastern Canada and New England track row dates back to the 1840's to 1890's when the track was originally laid. If you get the chance look at the track of the Boston and Maine Railroad from maps dated around 1920 or so and I swear it looks like someone took two big handfuls of spaghetti and threw them at the map. A neighbor of mine remembers riding in a coal truck doing deliveries back in the 20's and said you couldn't drive more than 3 or 4 miles in any direction without crossing another railroad track of the B&M RR From the Atlantic coast all the way to Fitchburg to the state line New Hampshire Massachusetts. Even today you can easily see where railroad breaches were everywhere.

      +TheBrantfordRailfan It would be shame if they lifted the rails. The railway will never come back. Here in NZ we had had more than our share of lines closing, often for the most trivial reason. the next one that will close is the line that comes the closest to where I live. Logs only are carted south from Otiria to Portland for chipping. Search for Otiria on my channel, several videos of the area. Anthony

      Before we went to Canada I did some research of nearby railways on TH-cam. The street running appealed greatly to me. I got in touch with Walter (video links in the description) and we met up at Brantford. The rest is history.
      There are street running videos such as this one, th-cam.com/video/EsuWXVPfQSc/w-d-xo.html on my channel of somewhere much closer to home, Kawakawa in New Zealand.

      We live in New Zealand. The nearest railway is about 25km from home. A mostly daily low speed shunt operates carting low grade pine to a chipping mill, where they are processed for export. The logs are stored at Otiria and taken to Portland.

      No shortage of traffic lights there. It is around 425m from the camera to where the train first comes into sight and there are 5 intersections. All of which are controlled by traffic lights.

      The 70-200mm lens on a DX body is the equivalent of 105-300mm on FX body, this compresses the foreground making the cars passing in front of the train seem much closer than they actually are.

      True . Do you know how old that section was . You don't see many looking like that nowadays. That close to the road and no crossing gates . I used to film trains bench in th Hamilton / Burlington area . I never knew what any engines where but I saw some pretty intesting ones . A CN tug on rails . This little engine I saw pulling one if these bad boys . Had a massive exhaust but the car itself was like half the size of one of these you show.
