8:45 WOW!!! It is just an island track circuit without any approach circuits. Is it labeled as an exempt crossing? Stopping at that grade crossing would be more dangerous than treating it as exempt/abandoned.
Yes, it is exempt. That's US 30, and I have driven over that crossing dozens of times in the 40+ years I have lived nearby, but never had to wait for a train.
Those are some long sidings in some industrial parks either due to plant size or how the track layout goes. Three cars of good grain or corn one car of cooking oil and you're well on your way to Fritos or bugles. No double dipping allowed
Years ago they would have had a run around track so they wouldn't need to do the long run back to the main. They would switch out at the factory. I miss the old days
I saw on YT where a passenger train has to set back into a station in Florida, the conductor held a length of hose with a horn attached which was attached to the brake line.
I remember when the B/O spur line was still in use that ran from Lodi to Wooster toward the last years of use how the box cars would really roll from side to side as loco went super slow!! I have never seen a train at the freeway crossing there until this video. It has rare signs of the watch for stopped traffic signs and exempt rr crossing ahead.
So this track crosses a state highway, not a federal interstate highway like I initially thought, even though I see large sections of it are grade-separated. In my state of FL I can think of a couple of areas like this, and several examples where a road is called a "state highway" but is really a stroad with a ton of intersections and driveway cuts. I think in South FL near Miami the FEC track that Brightline runs on crosses some 8-lane roads but most are more modest at 4-6 lanes. Otherwise this is a nice video with some good aerial shots.
Very nice. And the person making sure traffic sees they are coming. Yeah, that IS needed. We have these blinking red lights over street crossing for pedestrians here. Press the button they start flashing, then they go red, person can cross, then they start flashing (warning time at end), finally off. And I've seen cars just blast through those flashing lights above not even seeming to notice.
Nice vid. I live in Wapak but my wife is from Woo. I recognized it right away! I had to show this to her. I was wondering why the signals didn't activate?
Your exactly right and the more cars the worse it gets . it depends a lot on just how skilled the engineer is. A new engineer will fan the independent brake and it will nearly knock you off the end of the cars. I've tied up hand brakes on the end of cars before to knull that out before. It makes them keep pushing and not fan that brake.
That one is really dangerous and that is why they have those "Watch for stopped traffic signs." For that crossing. This Is why I try to warn my friends and cousins about this crossing when they get their liscense, because I know a lot about roads and signs.
A level crossing over a 4 lane road is not unusual anywhere. And it’s a limited access highway at this point as further down at each end you have surface streets also crossing the highway at grade and businesses facing on to it.
As an european it's interesting to see how people barely care for the signals over there. Here in sweden if you don't care for the signals you will be fined and may get hit by a train going 120kmh+ and you're also most likely plowing down a barrier you'll be paying for if you survive. There's no waiting 10 minutes for the train, in my experience.
