I would imagine at least 90% of the UK population still think China is still worse, in terms of living standards, infrastructure, health care, education, etc. than them. The government, schools and mainstream media have been talking China down for decades resulting in not only ignorance towards China but also a hostile attitude.

Chinese people have worked very hard to get their country where it is now, but it all happened very "fast" in maybe a couple of decades, so many people haven't updated their information about China in their heads, so they still have an image akin of "North Korea" with people dressing all the same... People need time to update
Sounds like you have not been to China, particularly Beijing, for quite a long time. Beijing has now, most of the time, a beautiful, clean/clear blue sky. The fact is that China has been moving steadily forward, and the UK has just been doing the opposite.

On western pollution statistics websites you can actually see that most days of the year, Beijing has now less pollution than some of the major US and other Western big cities. China is changing very rapidly since 1949. Every decade brings changes that other country take half a century

I have travelled to the UK quite often for the past several years. London, while very interesting with wonderful bookshops and museums is expensive and very poor value for money. Post Covid, I once waited 2 hours to clear security at Heathrow. The trains were not in the best state of repair and were often inexplicably delayed. There were homeless people camped out at the main entrance to King’s Cross station. Edinburgh was only marginally less expensive than London. Newcastle and the Scottish highlands were pleasant. In contrast, China is much more affordable and their trains are superb. Their airports are new and efficient. As for the much vaunted British orderliness, I can assure you that there was nothing orderly in the mad scrum in the tube station when a huge crowd of football supporters rushed into the underground station.

The first half of the video with all the negativities about China is really a "generation issue." China only took four decades to transform and modernize it's country going from poverty to the second biggest economy in the world with world class infrastructure. The average lifespan of a human is 70 years, one generation. China's rapid development merely outpaced the rules of etiquette but it's society will be more in sync with the western world through future generations no longer raised under poverty as the past.

Having lived in Asia for nearly 20 years, I now have a preference for it over the UK. While every place in the world has its pros and cons, I find myself favoring Asia.

Fast forward 9 years when you were in Beijing, vast improvements have been made. From queing up, mannerism, to air quality all are significantly better. Clear blue sky over Beijing is now common.
I was blown away going to the hospital in China and had about 3 other people barging into the drs office with me but happy to deal with that for the cleanliness and the infrastructure.
Good to hear the differences first hand... China is an awesome country but there are a few areas they could still improve : 1. Spitting Culture - I saw a guy spit inside a train station on the tile flooring and nobody bat an eyelid. 2. Queueing - While the queueing culture has improved in the last 25yrs, it's still lacking. For example, people do not wait for passengers to come out of the train before going in. 3. Traffic - The traffic while orderly does not respect pedestrian crossing and will sometimes just try to run you down 4. Bicycles and Parking - Bicycles and cars are parked all over the pedestrian walks etc... sometimes neatly but often in a disorderly manner. I personally think the pedestrian walks are not for car parking. However, I believe the above will improve over the next 10 years or so.

You've been hanging out with the wrong people in China because I know a number of them who are very informed about China and global current affairs. There are over 1.4 billion people in China. Of course, things will be chaotic there. Do a comparison between China and India. Both countries have similar size populations. As for the pollution, sometimes the AQI of London is higher than the AQI of Beijing. As for greenery, China is very green as well. There are actually endless mountains in China. No kidding. Honestly, I don't think that the Brits can ever see Chinese people as equals. Westerners normally see themselves at the top of the pyramid and non-whites under them. That's how the world is and that's why BRICS wants to change the world so that everyone is more equal.
I visited China in 1989 and in some places it even seemed mediaeval. The difference with Western living standards was extraordinary, plus there was ah air of menace post Tiananmen Square. I felt very privileged to be from an advanced and free Western society. It's remarkable how things have flipped in a relatively short period.

It's now more than 20 years since I went to China on a work trip. What a stunning place! Very interesting point of view especially as you have a foreign affairs background. A lot of what you say rings true but I must say that I didn't come across any impoliteness on my admittedly brief visit to Beijing and Harbin. Also I do find most British people also do discuss politics in terms of tropes that they've been indoctrinated with. I think that's partly responsible for that lack of awareness of Britain's position in the world that you describe late on in the video. It is so disappointing to hear you describe that as a problem at senior civil service/government level though.
Fairly accurate in a broad sense comparing the 2 countries. I have lived in England for quite a few years- it's very very true that Britons are meticulous in the practice and art of queuing up- much better than Chinese style 'queuing'. But then again queuing is also not particularly civilised in many other European nations, so it's a bit unfair to pick on the Chinese on this issue. On the matter of humour generally, yes, there's a lot to like about the sometimes dark humour and self-deprecating style of conversation in Britain- but on this score it's hard to compare- China is such a totally different culture. If you hadn't grown up in either cultures, you are not likely to 'enjoy' the cultural elements of the typical conversational exchange. China has just come out of a very difficult 100 plus years of poverty- it will probably need a few decades more before people learn to relax, and not be too obsessed with material progress... .
Fair assessment! Thank you. I have been in England for over 45 years now. It feels a lot difference. While there are a lot of very friendly people in London, we don’t feel safe anymore. I have not really gone out at night. I have been to Chinese cities recently. Very buoyant and feel safe. One think I don’t like about China is people smoke a lot! You can smell the cigarettes smoke when you get off the trains.
This unpleasant habit unfortunately came from the West. In the 19th century, the British brought opium into the country and forced them onto the Chinese people. Then after WWII, the American influence through their cigarette promotions went wild over the whole world, and lured people into the habit; unfortunately, China was one of those countries.
Why even bother to talk about China decades ago? The past is long gone and China had grown and improved in every way at tremendous speed in the last decades that put the US and UK in shame! The huge homelessness population and long queues forming at food banks in both countries are the best illustrations of their poor economic situation which can only get worse!

Britain is a bit cold to have a 24 hour lifestyle. I noticed when I was staying in Turkey for 8 months we didn't go for a meal to at least after 9 o'clock more like 11:00 o'clock it would be lovely and warm turkish families would all be in the restaurant as well as well as a few of us tourists as well, children running round, good atmosphere, there's no way you could do that in British restaurant even in the summer, it's just too cold. When I went to Uganda it was even more extreme I was being driven home one night and we were stuck in traffic for a little bit and I noticed out my window it was full of people in the dark sitting on chairs and Settees and sofas eating food and communing, it looked fantastic, but again there's no way you could do that in the UK because it's way too cold and way too wet. My host went out one night and I asked her where she was going in the middle of night, she said she was going to church for an all night church session starting at 12 midnight and lasting until 6:00 o'clock in the morning this will be so unheard of in Britain that it'd be incredible, sounds more like a nightclub timetable.
I liked to watch the Benny Hill show back in the 70s when I was a student in the UK. A few years ago, I watched a few episodes in TH-cam and I was surprised how disgusted I found them to be. Absolutely vulgar, there was no humor, all there were cheap jokes abusing women and other nationalities. And they call this Benny Hill Show the crown of British comedy.
I think this guy has to cheque the latitudes of Britain compared to China. China is boring too. I lived there for approx 4 years. It's obvious if you live in BJ or SH you will have pubs and restaurants open late. But try some small town in Fujian and see how vibrant that is.
Yeah, a lot of Brexit was about "the UK punching above its weight", whereas in Brussels, we never felt any blows. The whole Brexit process was seen in terms of British intransigence, being deliberately obstructive and contemptuous of due process, but to no effect. "Pompous" is a good word here.

First video good try after 9 years of hiatus from China. Despite all the external and internal challenges, like trade frictions, US political pressure, media smearing, property market slump, shifting job markets, there are still a lot of positivity. Because the government has set a lot policies to invest in the future, and actually getting public and private sectors mobilized. Some policies may fail or backfire, but you'll still gain something out of those, while other projects starting to gain fruits. It is much better than what UK has done in past decades, talked a lot and done little for the future. I can see the city gentrifications are good, but no investment in tech, in people, in global relationship, in policies that will help the country and its people grow new pastures. Brexit is a negative policy to break the norm, but lack the positive vision and policies on what are the new visions.
People just see what they want to see. I went for a meal yesterday , i didn't crash into a pothole, the service was good, the people were clean , the the toilets were clean and people were happy enjoying themselves and i didn't crash into any potholes on the way home, must have got lucky 😂
Hi Fred It’s very interesting listening to your views on the difference between the UK and China. The UK has suffered from massive under investment for years. People and politicians put lower taxes before investing into infrastructure. When we do invest in such projects such as the HS2, it comes in massively over budget, then gets cancelled. It would be interesting to hear your views on mainland Chinese society compared to Taiwan and Japan. For my limited experience watching videos on you tube, Taiwan’s social structure and economy appears to be more like the Japanese model then the mainland Chinese model. Taiwans economy and standard of living doesn’t compare with Chinas. Chinese people are now the most travelled cohort in the world now with 70% of the people having a passport. Britain earned billions from North Sea oil. Where has it gone? The Nordic countries used their oil income to make things better for their people and they have the highest standards of living in the world but the British ruling class don’t give a damn about their people and I include the Labour party in that. Your perspective on pollution is rather outdated. Beijing's air quality has improved dramatically since the early 2010s. The thing is that China is constantly changing and evolving and improving. It is often said that if you visit China every 10 years, you will see a different country each time. This is known as "China speed." That said, your overall assessment of China and UK is fair. China is not a perfect country. But despite its shortcomings, China is still a much better country to live in than the major Western economies (USA, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Italy). I'm Canadian and I've been to China many, many times, so I can present an honest, balanced view, too.

I have seen documentaries on China's coffin apartments in Hong Kong, sewage oil, tofu dredge construction. Stop sugarcoating China. Rural China has poverty which only those who go there sees. Interesting perspective. My experience is a bit different in some aspects. For instance I've noticed that there is actually a big variety of different opinions and thoughts and people tend to be quite well informed. It's just not a reason in China to split society into many isolated groups that each other because of different opinions. Also, what's so bad about acknowledging that Mao did incredible stuff for the country but also made some bad decisions here and there?

There is no country who comes even close to that. That a few older bridges collapsed is bad of course but the same happens in other countries (e.g. Germany just recently, or the US) who have far fewer bridges. 2) Hong Kong was under British rule when they turned it into a crap hole. That's why you don't see the same coffin apartments on the mainland. 3. Never saw or knew anyone in China who experienced sewage oil being used. So it must be an incredibly rare phenomenon. Especially now that the CPC increased hygiene standards quite a bit. 4) don't even know what you mean. Never saw that. Not denying it though as I'm not sure what you're talking about. But my guess is it's something either very rare or out of context info. Anyway, China is very clean. Definitely cleaner than big cities in the USA.

India needs to fix up its northern part like Delhi and Varanasi which in my honest opinion China can help because I have travelled througout India and I found a huge disparity between the Northern part ( Delhi , Varanasi) and rest of the country ( South, Northeast, Northwestern Himalayas) in terms of cleanliness, infrastructure, economy.. Quite a fair video. I sincerely wished you had a better time in China, but unfortunately sometimes we are limited by our times. I agree, the British dark humor and sarcasm are lacking in most parts of China. Beijingers are usually quite funny, but there is also the cultural and language barrier. As for lacking of "inspiring conversations", sad to say it is because you are a foreigner. Chinese people are the same as people everywhere, when they talk in private, they sh*t on the government, their jobs/boss, and their family struggles. There is definitely nothing "propaganda". However, China being a non-immigrant country, its people just don't know how to share a normal conversation with the foreigners. They are friendly and curious, but they don't know how to treat you as equal, for better or worse. Chinese people often say "圈子", which is the friend group you surround yourself with. One quote says "you're the average of the five people spend the most time with", so no matter where you are, try to surround yourself with the most kind and open-minded people, hopefully locals 🙂I am a Chinese that lived in the US for decades now. I come to accept the reality that most caucasians, blacks, and hispanics just don't know how to interact with asians... It is not discrimination; it is a honest lack of understanding and comfort mixed with some stereotypes. When my wife and I go to restaurants, travel tours, and events, we will find our "foreign" waiters, guides, hosts spending way less time chitchatting with us than others. They are very nice to us, but I can only conclude that they don't know what to say to us😅. It is actually quite simple. In terms of organized, China is a country with 1.4 billion people with many of it's mega cities having populations between 15 million to 33 million (Chongqing). Try managing cities with huge populations in the west and see how it fare. Have you been to time square in Manhattan? NYC has only 8 million people and places there like time square is chaotic. Have you seen traffic on the freeways in LA? if you only knew about the traffic there just a few decades ago, a city with population of only 4 million.

For example, the “70% good, 30% bad” view on Mao is a government narrative-none of my friends would bring that up with me. Spend more time with real, everyday people in China, and you'll start to see the true nuances of Chinese society.
China is not living in the past like UK. They have the money to buy nice new stuff, not cling on to old worn out buildings. Just look at UK footpaths and curbs. The environment is creating a malaise. I would imagine at least 90% of the UK population still think China is still worse, in terms of living standards, infrastructure, health care, education, etc. than them. The UK still has that false sense of empire, thinking that they own the Pacific. They did, with guns and opium, in the last two centuries. They don't realize that the dark ages is gone, their warships are not welcome in Asian waters anymore.
I have travelled to the UK quite often for the past several years. London, while very interesting with wonderful bookshops and museums is expensive and very poor value for money. Post Covid, I once waited 2 hours to clear security at Heathrow. The trains were not in the best state of repair and were often inexplicably delayed. There were homeless people camped out at the main entrance to King’s Cross station. Edinburgh was only marginally less expensive than London. Newcastle and the Scottish highlands were pleasant.
In contrast, China is much more affordable and their trains are superb. Their airports are new and efficient.
As for the much vaunted British orderliness, I can assure you that there was nothing orderly in the mad scrum in the tube station when a huge crowd of football supporters rushed into the underground station.

Having lived in Asia for nearly 20 years, I now have a preference for it over the UK. While every place in the world has its pros and cons, I find myself favoring Asia.
A very fair assessment of both countries. Didn't mention petty crime though and not being able to walk alone at night without fear, and teenage yobs making life miserable for everyone.
crime is a common feature in all western cities, so common which is why it was never mentioned, just like in the US, gun crimes, knife crimes, sch00l sh00tings are all common, theft, ponzi schemes, insider tradings are all common features, it's now part of the culture.
Fast forward 9 years when you were in Beijing, vast improvements have been made. From queing up, mannerism, to air quality all are significantly better. Clear blue sky over Beijing is now common.
I was blown away going to the hospital in China and had about 3 other people barging into the drs office with me but happy to deal with that for the cleanliness and the infrastructure.
There is nothing England about England anymore.
9 years in China feels like a life time chang. Come to visit again if you may.
Good to hear the differences first hand... China is an awesome country but there are a few areas they could still improve :
1. Spitting Culture - I saw a guy spit inside a train station on the tile flooring and nobody bat an eyelid.
2. Queueing - While the queueing culture has improved in the last 25yrs, it's still lacking. For example, people do not wait for passengers to come out of the train before going in.
3. Traffic - The traffic while orderly does not respect pedestrian crossing and will sometimes just try to run you down
4. Bicycles and Parking - Bicycles and cars are parked all over the pedestrian walks etc... sometimes neatly but often in a disorderly manner. I personally think the pedestrian walks are not for car parking.
However, I believe the above will improve over the next 10 years or so.

I must, however, supplement that during these years, China has been improving those negative aspects you've mentioned while the UK has only been deteriorating in her living conditions. BTW, when I was little, London was well known as "The Capital of Fog".
You've been hanging out with the wrong people in China because I know a number of them who are very informed about China and global current affairs.
There are over 1.4 billion people in China. Of course, things will be chaotic there. Do a comparison between China and India. Both countries have similar size populations.
As for the pollution, sometimes the AQI of London is higher than the AQI of Beijing.
As for greenery, China is very green as well. There are actually endless mountains in China. No kidding.
Honestly, I don't think that the Brits can ever see Chinese people as equals. Westerners normally see themselves at the top of the pyramid and non-whites under them. That's how the world is and that's why BRICS wants to change the world so that everyone is more equal.
I visited China in 1989 and in some places it even seemed mediaeval. The difference with Western living standards was extraordinary, plus there was ah air of menace post Tiananmen Square. I felt very privileged to be from an advanced and free Western society. It's remarkable how things have flipped in a relatively short period.

Brits living in Malaysia for 16 years. Totally agree with everything you say. Both good and bad about the UK and Asia. No member of my family wants to return to the UK.
It's now more than 20 years since I went to China on a work trip. What a stunning place! Very interesting point of view especially as you have a foreign affairs background. A lot of what you say rings true but I must say that I didn't come across any impoliteness on my admittedly brief visit to Beijing and Harbin. Also I do find most British people also do discuss politics in terms of tropes that they've been indoctrinated with. I think that's partly responsible for that lack of awareness of Britain's position in the world that you describe late on in the video. It is so disappointing to hear you describe that as a problem at senior civil service/government level though.
Fairly accurate in a broad sense comparing the 2 countries. I have lived in England for quite a few years- it's very very true that Britons are meticulous in the practice and art of queuing up- much better than Chinese style 'queuing'. But then again queuing is also not particularly civilised in many other European nations, so it's a bit unfair to pick on the Chinese on this issue. On the matter of humour generally, yes, there's a lot to like about the sometimes dark humour and self-deprecating style of conversation in Britain- but on this score it's hard to compare- China is such a totally different culture. If you hadn't grown up in either cultures, you are not likely to 'enjoy' the cultural elements of the typical conversational exchange. China has just come out of a very difficult 100 plus years of poverty- it will probably need a few decades more before people learn to relax, and not be too obsessed with material progress... .

Fair assessment! Thank you. I have been in England for over 45 years now. It feels a lot difference. While there are a lot of very friendly people in London, we don’t feel safe anymore. I have not really gone out at night.
I have been to Chinese cities recently. Very buoyant and feel safe. One think I don’t like about China is people smoke a lot! You can smell the cigarettes smoke when you get off the trains.
This unpleasant habit unfortunately came from the West. In the 19th century, the British brought opium into the country and forced them onto the Chinese people. Then after WWII, the American influence through their cigarette promotions went wild over the whole world, and lured people into the habit; unfortunately, China was one of those countries.
You go to rural China and see horrendous poverty and sewage oil used in foods. The seafood markets also hits a new low in hygiene.
Why even bother to talk about China decades ago? The past is long gone and China had grown and improved in every way at tremendous speed in the last decades that put the US and UK in shame! The huge homelessness population and long queues forming at food banks in both countries are the best illustrations of their poor economic situation which can only get worse!

I noticed when I was staying in Turkey for 8 months we didn't go for a meal to at least after 9 o'clock more like 11:00 o'clock it would be lovely and warm turkish families would all be in the restaurant as well as well as a few of us tourists as well, children running round, good atmosphere, there's no way you could do that in British restaurant even in the summer, it's just too cold. When I went to Uganda it was even more extreme I was being driven home one night and we were stuck in traffic for a little bit and I noticed out my window it was full of people in the dark sitting on chairs and Settees and sofas eating food and communing, it looked fantastic, but again there's no way you could do that in the UK because it's way too cold and way too wet. My host went out one night and I asked her where she was going in the middle of night, she said she was going to church for an all night church session starting at 12 midnight and lasting until 6:00 o'clock in the morning this will be so unheard of in Britain that it'd be incredible, sounds more like a nightclub timetable.

I liked to watch the Benny Hill show back in the 70s when I was a student in the UK. A few years ago, I watched a few episodes in TH-cam and I was surprised how disgusted I found them to be. Despite all the external and internal challenges, like trade frictions, US political pressure, media smearing, property market slump, shifting job markets, there are still a lot of positivity. Because the government has set a lot policies to invest in the future, and actually getting public and private sectors mobilized. Some policies may fail or backfire, but you'll still gain something out of those, while other projects starting to gain fruits.
It is much better than what UK has done in past decades, talked a lot and done little for the future. I can see the city gentrifications are good, but no investment in tech, in people, in global relationship, in policies that will help the country and its people grow new pastures.
Brexit is a negative policy to break the norm, but lack the positive vision and policies on what are the new visions.

People and politicians put lower taxes before investing into infrastructure. When we do invest in such projects such as the HS2, it comes in massively over budget, then gets cancelled. It would be interesting to hear your views on mainland Chinese society compared to Taiwan and Japan. For my limited experience watching videos on you tube, Taiwan’s social structure and economy appears to be more like the Japanese model then the mainland Chinese model. Taiwans economy and standard of living doesn’t compare with Chinas. Chinese people are now the most travelled cohort in the world now with 70% of the people having a passport. Britain earned billions from North Sea oil. Where has it gone? The Nordic countries used their oil income to make things better for their people and they have the highest standards of living in the world but the British ruling class don’t give a damn about their people and I include the Labour party in that. Your perspective on pollution is rather outdated. Beijing's air quality has improved dramatically since the early 2010s.
The thing is that China is constantly changing and evolving and improving. It is often said that if you visit China every 10 years, you will see a different country each time. This is known as "China speed."
That said, your overall assessment of China and UK is fair. China is not a perfect country. But despite its shortcomings, China is still a much better country to live in than the major Western economies (USA, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Italy). I'm Canadian and I've been to China many, many times, so I can present an honest, balanced view, too.

Regarding your comment that China has higher standard of life than western countries I will say your pride on China is limitless. I have seen documentaries on China's coffin apartments in Hong Kong, sewage oil, tofu dredge construction. Stop sugarcoating China. Rural China has poverty which only those who go there sees. People use buckets to bring water from outside because they don't have running water in their homes.

Interesting perspective. My experience is a bit different in some aspects. For instance I've noticed that there is actually a big variety of different opinions and thoughts and people tend to be quite well informed. It's just not a reason in China to split society into many isolated groups that each other because of different opinions. 1) Tofu bridges: consider this: there is no country on earth that has more bridges than China, with the vast majority of record breaking modern state of the art bridges being in China. There is no country who comes even close to that. That a few older bridges collapsed is bad of course but the same happens in other countries (e.g. Germany just recently, or the US) who have far fewer bridges.
2) Hong Kong was under British rule when they turned it into a crap hole. That's why you don't see the same coffin apartments on the mainland.
3. Never saw or knew anyone in China who experienced sewage oil being used. So it must be an incredibly rare phenomenon. Especially now that the CPC increased hygiene standards quite a bit.
4) don't even know what you mean. Never saw that. Not denying it though as I'm not sure what you're talking about. But my guess is it's something either very rare or out of context info. Anyway, China is very clean. Definitely cleaner than big cities in the USA.

China and India should work together forgetting their border issues as two oldest civilizations. India needs to fix up its northern part like Delhi and Varanasi which in my honest opinion China can help because I have travelled througout India and I found a huge disparity between the Northern part ( Delhi , Varanasi) and rest of the country ( South, Northeast, Northwestern Himalayas) in terms of cleanliness, infrastructure, economy.. Also if China like India takes Pro Israeli stance it would be great.

Quite a fair video. I sincerely wished you had a better time in China, but unfortunately sometimes we are limited by our times. I agree, the British dark humor and sarcasm are lacking in most parts of China. Beijingers are usually quite funny, but there is also the cultural and language barrier. As for lacking of "inspiring conversations", sad to say it is because you are a foreigner. Chinese people are the same as people everywhere, when they talk in private, they sh*t on the government, their jobs/boss, and their family struggles. There is definitely nothing "propaganda". However, China being a non-immigrant country, its people just don't know how to share a normal conversation with the foreigners. They are friendly and curious, but they don't know how to treat you as equal, for better or worse. Chinese people often say "圈子", which is the friend group you surround yourself with. One quote says "you're the average of the five people spend the most time with", so no matter where you are, try to surround yourself with the most kind and open-minded people, hopefully locals 🙂I am a Chinese that lived in the US for decades now. I come to accept the reality that most caucasians, blacks, and hispanics just don't know how to interact with asians... It is not discrimination; it is a honest lack of understanding and comfort mixed with some stereotypes. When my wife and I go to restaurants, travel tours, and events, we will find our "foreign" waiters, guides, hosts spending way less time chitchatting with us than others. You're confusing poorer countries in southeast Asia to China. The only thing China has in common with those countries are vibrancy. China is very orderly when you look at how they managing it's huge population.
