2010-2017 ABS/Traction Problems on a Chev Equinox

  • Is your ABS/Traction disabled and is your dash lit up like a christmas tree? When you press on the brake does your ABS kick on for no reason? Most likely you have a problem with either the wheel speed sensor or, in this case, the magnetic strip on the bearing. In my case the magnetic strip literally fell off the bearing - and it's easy to check without a ton of work.

    I have a 2021 Equinox with 18k miles. Friday I go to leave when I noticed damn near every light on the dash was on and a service ESC on display screen! I immediately went to GM dealership and the code came back as a bad wheel speed sensor. It is still under warranty and I have an appointment to get it fixed Monday morning. Thanks to your video I will be sure to ask if they checked the ring for damage. Thanks for the lesson!

      Glad to help. Strange a sensor would fail so soon. Most likely defective covering on it, and it corroded.

      @@patricklozon1820 turns out a squirrel chewed the entire thing completely off! Luckily my insurance is covering the costs or I would be out $400+ due to a hungry critter craving wheel speed sensor for dinner. They told me this happens all the time. Amazing the damage they can do to an automobile!

    I am having a real time with my 16 equinox. only 45,000 miles no problems, run over a couple bad expansion joints and stabil-trac and abs came on. No codes, and lights go out with a battery reset. Also drivers side rotor getting hot, don`t know if its because abs is applying brake. Rebuilt caliper and slides all working well. Really don`t want to pull bearing to check , can`t really tell by looking behind!

    • @patricklozon1820
      @patricklozon1820  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Fredrick, sounds like you have couple issues there. The hot caliper means its locking up on the rotor. It's either the caliper or a collapsed flex line - would fix that first. You need to scan for the codes next time it comes on - find out what the problem is. My guess is a bad wire/short. Also to check bearing, block rear wheels, jack up front, put in neutral, crank wheel so you can get your hand on the steering knuckle, rotate wheel. If you feel vibration, hear something unusual (other than cv) could be bearing. They can fail prematurely, but I'm not so sure that's your issue.

      @@patricklozon1820First, Thank you for the reply sir! I took caliper apart and cleaned it up. Maybe hose is the problem, I've always used c clamp to push piston in. Now I read to break bleader loose instead of pushing back to resovour. Said you can screw up abs valve?? Never heard that before. Anyway it's only 10 degrees out today will keep updated on progress, need to ✅ the flex line and rear of bearing for magnet strip. Will keep updated. I have put scanner on but not an abs scanner, so no codes show. Frustrating, want to get back to the 70s vehicles, much easier!!

    • @patricklozon1820
      @patricklozon1820  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@frederickstanley8712 Hey Fred, best way to fix the caliper issue is wait until it is seizing (hub is hot), jack'r up, take off wheel. If you crack open the bleeder valve and the caliper frees up/hub turns ok, then it is your line. If nothing happens, it's your caliper. You can't really tell visually on a caliper many times, may look just fine, but the piston is hanging up inside the caliper cylinder. I've always just bought a new replacement vs. attempt a rebuild. About that abs valve, heard that, always ignored it, never had a problem yet and I've changed my share of GM brakes - lol. Guess it could happen - but abs vavle problems usually related to air, fluid going dry to master and needing to trigger computer to bleed abs air bubbles when you refill. You might be able to get a parts store to scan it for you. Good luck.

    I came to this video because my 2011 Nox just lit up driving back to central Oklahoma from Austin Texas. My Equinox has 192,000+ miles. I got it brand new in 2011 and have had so many issues. First time for the Stabilitrack and ABS. It happened after getting on the interstate in traffic because of an accident for 1.5 hours, riding the brake going 4 mph for most of it. After we were able to move the lights came on about 5 miles down the road. Luckily I was able to clear the lights after reading the manual for the rest of the ride home. Next week I take it to the dealership for an oil change and will have them look at it. My uncle is the head mechanic at the dealership and I always requested that he gets my vehicle. But if I don't make him aware that my vehicle will be there those who take it in may not assign it to him. So I want to know what's going on ahead of time so I am smart about it. Thanks for the video.

    • @patricklozon1820
      @patricklozon1820  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the lights cleared, I'd bet the issue is not related to the strip falling off the bearings. Most likely an issue with the ABS, but that's just a guess. I find that the equinox needs more frequent oil changes - oil tends to get sooty. Assume it's related to the fuel management system, or maybe the dynamic valve timing combination. Let that "sooty oil" go too long and you end up having excessive wear on the timing guides, loose chain, and once it skips, usually all over for that engine. Just keep an ear out for a "rattle". You hear that, best to get the timing chain/guides replaced - warning can be expensive. That's the weakness in the design on this engine. Still running on original., myself. Otherwise maintenance for my SUV has been relatively minimal, respectively.

    I had all 4 of my brake pads replaced, and my 2 front wheel bearings replaced. The ABS light is still on, and I can feel a slight slip at times when I am braking, even after all the repairs. I've paid about $700 in repairs for all that and the ABS light and traction light are still illuminated. What else could it be? Someone mentioned that maybe the rotors need to be changed, but I need a clear answer, before I pay that money, and still have this issue.

    • @patricklozon1820
      @patricklozon1820  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok, well your comment on "slight slip while braking" is concerning. Go to a different shop and get this work assessed. They can diagnose w/o charging you, ask for a quote. Don't give them any history. Could be the ABS controller, a bad sensor, etc. The garages have scanners to read the ABS info directly, wheel speed, etc. They should be able to tell what the problem is right away. This is NOT a rotor issue. BTW it is possible to get a bad "new" part, especially if it is the cheap knockoff garbage they are selling nowadays.

      Well there you go, you said you replaced the front bearings but not the rear. I assume you mean by bearings you mean the Hub Assembly? Then it's probably the rear hub that's giving you the problem.

    My 2010 equinox just had the ABS and stabilitrack light come on... just the ABS when first starting it then that disappears which makes my braking terrible as the ABS is probably not working until I reach about 15 mph then the ABS and stabilitrack lights come in disabling the AWD. Does this sound like the speed sensor ( that's what code came up) due to the magnetic strip? And if the magnetic strip is bad making the speed sensor not operate is it necessary that I replace the bearing or is it safe to drive? After I reach the 15mph and both lights come on the vehicle drives fine so just wondering the importance of getting it fixed asap as I am going on a camping trip next week just a couple hours away.
    Thanks for any advice you may have

    • @patricklozon1820
      @patricklozon1820  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds like the magnetic strip to me. I do realize my video is not the greatest for seeing the strip - should have filmed the new ones before I put them on, regardless. Here's a pick to demonstrate what it looks like: www.amazon.ca/DRIVESTAR-513288-Bearings-Equinox-Terrain/dp/B01LER6K10/ref=sr_1_2?crid=221Y9CZRWH8B5&keywords=bearing+2011+equinox&qid=1660085712&replacementKeywords=bearing&s=automotive&sprefix=bearing+2011+equinox%2Cautomotive%2C99&sr=1-2&vehicle=2011-47-2487------------&vehicleName=2011+Chevrolet+Equinox That black circular strip is what is glued on and it sometimes literally falls off. When this happens, ABS goes nuts, errors off, and AWD, stablitrac is disabled, allowing you to drive it. Quite annoying. Anna, if you have a friend with a hoist, or if you are able to securely jack it up (such as a ramp). Don't ever just trust a jack to go under a vehicle. Have a powerful flashlight and look for that strip - or evidence of missing parts of it.. Sometimes they fall off in pieces, other times, whole thing. So if you have it jacked & secured with a jack-stand, wheel off ground, key in, transmission neutral, other wheels blocked - you can manually turn the wheel and look for a bad spot.
      As for the importance, yeah you have to fix that, not something to leave alone. If it is the strip - that means replacing the bearing. If it's the sending unit, that is actually easier. May need an ABS scanner/reader for diagnosing that, but first check the lines for physical damage. Hope this helps.

    Great another f up we have to deal with!
    I was driving my '11 eqosnox the other day short drive and the caliper seized I bought a new rotor and caliper then decided to replace the outer tie rod end because the boot had failed some time ago even tho my cv joint is starting to make noise I didn't want to spend a new car price on repair right now. I guess I didn't get the rod in the right place and noticed when I was driving it, it was pulling to the left (worked on right side) then the stabili-track system fired up on me a bit down the road wth gm.😢

    • @patricklozon1820
      @patricklozon1820  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Red, that stabil-track could be firing off because of the magnetic ring, but may just want to check everything first- maybe you just unplugged the sensor by mistake or something simple like that. You'll want to get an alignment before your tires are eaten away. A reconditioned CV axle should only set you back 150 or so - maybe check rock auto. You'll need to undo the axle nut, they can be torqued on there pretty high - best to do that with the wheel on the ground (if you can't get thru with your socket on your std rims, put on the spare). Then you'll need to pop the ball joint - make sure its in good shape or you may have to change that too. Depends on how many potholes you go through! It's a Sat afternoon job - not too complicated. Lots of vids to reference. Just take your time, worst issue is getting the axel to pop out, just keep at it it will come loose - be careful with your prying. If you do have to change your bearing, try to get one with a stainless steel exciter ring (can see from the back). Once you get the bolts off, you can (carefully) pound with a brass sledge to work it out, guys at the garage often use special pullers.

      @patricklozon1820 Yes, I had that tune with a Kia wheel bearing. I had a shop do it, and that didn't last a week it failed when I took a peek. I could smell the pb blaster .
      Had a '02 caravan that needed a cv, and I had to have my son hold the brake and use a cheater bar to break the spindle nut free.
      Seems I have everything except a brass hammer these days I thought I had my dad's but someone else must of needed one too so that's another purchase.
      Have a great day.

      Follow up:
      Had my alignment, the tech said that the rear needed parts... the counter person wasn't open to tell ne what of 'course.
      I did end up buying that speed sensor, but it wasn't needed. I took it for about a 3 Mile run, and on the way home, the light went off just like that the way it came on 🤫

    • @patricklozon1820

      Hey Chris, a fragmented or missing magnetic ring on your hub is the most probable cause. You'll need to get underneath and check for a problem with it (make sure you use jackstands - be safe). If the ring looks OK (is there, no breaks or parts missing), it could be the magnetic reader or a break in the wiring leading to it. Unfortunately, there are also a few other possibilities (ABS module issues). You may need to get your hands on a scanner (that reads ABS) and obtain the ABS MIL the code. Bottomline, if it is the ring, the only way to fix this is order/install a new bearing. I classify the replacemet as medium complexity job, not exactly simple, but doable by a "nominally skilled" mechanical person, as long as you have the tools and know how to use a torque wrench.
