    U.S. Power Metal: Metal Church, Reverend, Heretic, Vicious Rumors, Meliah Rage, Iced Earth, Sanctuary...heavier and faster than traditional heavy metal but not quite thrash metal.
    European power metal: Helloween, Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, Rhapsody, Stratovarius...etc.
    The two don't necessarily sound the same.

    • @nolifetilmetal1

      Death is real...
      Helstar & Liege Lord are good additions to the list as well. I don't mind some European power metal as long as it doesn't get too flowery and keyboardy.

      +Scott Waters (ultmetal) I totally agree with your inclusion of Metal Church and Iced Earth. Meliah Rage was definitely an influence on the scene as well, but like most early power metal they didn't have much impact anywhere. Sanctuary were also of interest, but I'm struggling to include them in the power metal scene (even the US scene). The other US bands, I don't know enough about them.
      It's an interesting point that they don't sound 'the same'. Could we include two branches on the tree, perhaps.

      I think you definitely could have two different branches of the tree. U.S. Power metal of the 80's sounds nothing like what European power metal became in the 90's. I mean, Helloween, Rage, Running Wild could all be included in the power metal tree as well, but even they don't sound like all the later European power metal bands of the 1990's and onward.
      Fact is, even Metallica were called "power metal" early on. I remember buying Kill 'Em All as a new release and the band calling themselves power metal but it didn't take long before the thrash tag was far more common for them.

      US Power Metal:
      Metal Church and Iced Earth are the big names that came out on top. Virgin Steele is also huge.
      Bands like Leatherwolf, Meliah Rage and Pretty Maids were early on.
      I would like to include WASP in that list, almost everything they did from Headless Children on was power metal.
      Armored Saint, even the John Bush era of Anthrax was power metal to me.
      Sword was another great "US" power metal band (Canada, would have to come under US I'm afraid).
      German Power metal:
      Helloween, Blind Guardian, Rage, Running Wild, Axel Rudi Pell, Jorn Lande, Edguy, Sinner, and about a hundred other bands. New stuff like Masterplan, Avantasia, Iron Savior, Primal Fear.

    POWER METAL!
    Precursors: Scorpions (70s), Judas Priest, Rainbow (70s), Accept, Dio.
    Speed Metal*: Exciter, Agent Steel, Abattoir, Warfare, Raven, Hellion, Living Death, Acid, Enforcer, Bloodlust, Helstar, Riot, etc.
    US Power Metal: Anvil, Manowar, Liege Lord, Lizzy Borden, Manilla Road, Jag Panzer, Iced Earth, Virgin Steele, Warlord, Omen, Thor, Savatage, Cage, Sanctuary, Metal Church, Vicious Rumors, Chastain, Messiah Force, Malice, etc.
    European Power Metal: Helloween, Gamma Ray, Stratovarius, Cloven Hoof (3rd album), Blind Guardian, Edguy, Iron Savior, Stormwitch, Running Wild, Hammerfall, Rage, Heaven's Gate, Heavy Load, Primal Fear, Grave Digger, Secret Sphere, Sabaton, Iron Angel, Cain's Offering, DragonForce, Sonata Arctica, Powerwolf, Morgana LeFay, White Skull, Dark Moor, Dream Evil, Freedom Call, Angel Dust (later), Tad Morose, etc
    Japanese Power Metal: X Japan, Sex Machineguns, Light Bringer, Aion, Dragon Guardian, Skywings, Ministrelix, Aldious, Cyntia, Albion, Mary's Blood, Bridear, Tears of Tragedy, etc.
    Progressive Power Metal: Fates Warning, Queensryche, Crimson Glory, Kamelot, Heir Apparent, Lethal, Screamer, Angra, Titan Force, Conception, Battalion, Anubis Gate, Adramlech, Symphony X, Evergrey, Triosphere, Vision Divine, etc.
    Neoclassical Power Metal: Yngwie J. Malmsteen, Versailles, Galneryus, Jupiter, Kamijo, Concerto Moon, Cacophony, Narnia, Warmen, Ark Storm, At Vance, Kenzani, Timo Tolkki's Avalon, Amberian Dawn, etc.
    Folk Power Metal: Falconer, Elvenking, Wuthering Rights, Alestorm, Orden Ogan, Vexilium, Wilderun, Winterstorm, Spellblast, Lothlöryen, etc.
    Symphonic Power Metal: Nightwish, Epica, After Forever, Visions of Atlantis, Edenbridge, Rhapsody of Fire, Damnation Angels, Diabulus in Musica, Legenda Aurea, Xandria (later), HolyHell, Liv Moon, Operatika Element, Seraphim, Avantasia, Pathfinder, Fairyland, Ancient Bards, Gloryhammer, Thy Majestie, Dragonland, etc.
    Extreme Power Metal: Children of Bodom, Wintersun, Blood Stain Child (early), Inearthed, Whispered, Crimson Shadows, etc.
    Power/Gothic Metal: Pythia, Krypteria.
    *Speed metal was like the next evolution of traditional heavy metal. I define it as 'take an early Judas Priest song and speed it up'. Eventually it led to the creation of power metal which was even more over the top. Some of the bands mentioned in other categories began as speed metal bands (Grave Digger for example).

      ***** Styx is a prog rock/AOR band who evolved in a pop rock act, not metal at all. Whether some of their influences can be found in power metal bands, that can be discussed, but they are hardly a precursor of power metal.

    • @Kalimdor199Menegroth
      @Kalimdor199Menegroth 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Influences are many and it depends on each band. I talk about precursors. Bands and artists that shaped power metal in what it is today. Not about influences. Judging from how varied power metal bands are today. influences come from outside of metal. Yet they are additions.
      Styx was prog rock for most of their career. It just took different forms. In the beginning they were more of a prog hard rock band. Then they started to mess with some AOR/pop elements. And no. Pop elements could be heard very early in their career. The Grand Illusion had some, if I recall correctly. Killjoy is just their poppyest album.
      AOR is still very used today and it was common in the 80s. It is a stripped down, very simple version of prog rock. I call it prog pop rock or lite-prog rock. In the 80s it was very popular. You had bands like Survivor for example. Asia, Journey, Foreigner, Toto, Magnum and a lot more. REO Speedwagon was just one of the pioneers.
      And I did not mean that REO Speedwagon has something to do with metal as I did not mean that AOR is a precursor of power metal. Styx has a sound vastly different. First of all, it doesn't have the metal signature, second, they have always been more pop oriented even when they were not a pop rock band.
      I listened to both of them for more than 20 years. I know what I'm talking about. Styx, if supposedly has an influence upon some power metal bands, that I may accept. But that influence did no shape power metal in what it is today, much less what it meant in the 80s when it emerged.
      As for the power ballad, that is a very weak argument as power ballads are common in more sub-genres of metal. Power ballads were heavily used in glam, heavy and thrash metal.

    • @Kalimdor199Menegroth
      @Kalimdor199Menegroth 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Thrash metal had its own ballads. Metallica had 5 on their first 5 albums. Testament had 3, if I recall correctly. Death Angel had one on their 3rd album. Even Megadeth had one, "In My Darkest Hour". And I have no idea about what you're talking about. When did I mention the 60s? I mentioned the 80s. Are we talking about the same thing.
      In thrash metal's case, the difference is that they made their ballads more original. Not based upon the pop ballads of earlier bands or contemporaries (like the glam bands).

    • @Kalimdor199Menegroth
      @Kalimdor199Menegroth 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** "isn't in my darkest hour about dave mustaines feelings after the bus accident that took cliff burton's life?"
      No, it is about him and his problems with drug addiction.
      "Styx's ballads also different.. ranging in emotions..."
      That's a non-musical feature. You clearly do not understand that ballads in 90% of cases has a similar songwriting construction. The difference in thrash is that they make reverse ballads. Harder in tone during choruses, mellower during sections. But they are still power ballads.
      As for what you gave me, that's basically an opinion voiced by a music journalist. I do not construct my opinions and perceptions based on other people's views. I construct them based on my own experiences.
      As for the history of AOR, even the video says that 'grunge killed AOR', which means that AOR was still around in the 80s and beginning of the 90s. Moreover, the video shows the AOR movement lingered in underground in the 90s and resurfaced due to nostalgia in the 2000s.

As a big power metal fan, I think you could have had someone who was a bit more knowledgeable about the genre. Never listened to Kamelot? Or Sabaton? Jason seems like a cool guy, and I'm going to check out Cauldron now, but please consider picking your co-hosts a little more strategically. I know power metal isn't your personal favorite, but it's a very important and large genre, and I feel it was given the short end of the stick here.

    I think Power Metal should be two or three subgenres. The first power metal scene I think of is the american with Omen, early Nasty Savage, Manilla Road, Warlord, Brocas Helm, Virgin Steele and such and the second wave which was way more melodic and faster and more into the Fantasy imagery. You can even add Dio and Manowar into this first more primitive wave that had closer ties to traditional heavy metal. The Second wave is essentially the German wave in the late eighties and early nineties with Helloween, Blind Guardian, Edguy, Gamma Ray and such and a third wave could be the even more modern bands with symphonic and pop elements. But original power metal wave has really nothing to do with the wave that started in Germany a few years later. So different in sound, lyrics and speed.

      While "U.S. Power Metal" might just be my favorite metal style I really don't think it should be called power metal anymore. It's mostly just Heavy Metal to me.. Power Metal is today known basically only as the European style and pushing in American Heavy Metal just makes this into a huge mess..

      Uriah Heep is "early metal" from the 70's. Like Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin they are considered Hard/Heavy Rock by most today. I prefer the term Early Metal. Anyway, they certainly aren't power metal. Uriah Heep is a 70's band from the UK while the current term Power Metal refers to bands that came in the end of the 80's and had most success in the 90's.

    • @andrastereminiec7599

      the only tracks of theirs that i would describe/classify as metal songs are Easy livin', Sweet lorraine& Stealin'
      THe rest of their material definately has the themes of power metal...what metal band would have a song about a time traveler,or Pagans being harassed by Christians?

    For future reference: Rhapsody/Rhapsody of Fire is 100% symphonic power metal, but I feel Nightwish is more symphonic HEAVY metal/gothic symphonic metal than what's considered power. Guitars are heavier, more bass guitar, etc., cause it to vary slightly. I also think Within Temptation fits with Nightwish.

    • @Wormweed
      @Wormweed 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Thomas Kittock Yep, pretty much. I love Nightwish ( and power metal), and i've been a fan of Nightwish since 99, but i would never call it power metal. Rhapsody/Rhapsody of Fire is probably my favourite power metal band, and it's been that way since i bought Symphony of Enchanted Lands in 98.
      Stratovarious is probably one of the bands that really made power metal what it is. Great band, and i love their songs. And they deserve to be very close to the top.
      But i do feel like Rhapsody belong on the power metal list, even though its very symphonic. They cant go in the same category as Nightwish, since they are much closer to power metal than Nightwish.

      Yes they have some power metal songs, but i wont define Nightwish as a power metal band. They dont even have a full album that could be defined as a power metal album.
      Listen to Rhapsody's Symphony of enchanted lands. Thats an album that is pure power metal, apart from the story telling. And i just dont see too many similarities between Nightwish and bands like Rhapsody.
      Nightwish only has Emppu on guitars, and he plays just rhythm guitar in many of their songs, no lead parts that make it sound like power metal.
      Emppu is great, dont get me wrong, and he sure can play lead, and power metal, just listen to some of the other bands he played in.
      But this is just my point of view, and how i define power metal.

    • @Kalimdor199Menegroth
      @Kalimdor199Menegroth 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wormweed They have 2 as far as I'm concerned. Nightwish is a little bit of a different breed. Not all power metal bands sound the same. I think Nightwish started to become pure symphonic metal only after Tarja left. Oceanborn and Wishmaster are albums that are definitely rooted in European power metal. Period. From then on Tuomas's interest in movie soundtrack kicked in, making the band to tone-down their sound.

      @@LemmyLawless True, but in a lot of their tracks, I hear a lot of elements and characteristics of Power Metal. Songs like Rise or Fall, Princess of Love, Thunder, and The Calling, all have the choir-like chorus chant, fantasy oriented themes, classically inspired melodies, and of course, harmonized guitar parts with super melodic solos. I would call it a precursor to Power Metal if anything. Maybe prog. Either way, they definitely sounded different than other bands from that era.

    I still remember this one.
    I think this is a really important episode, because it's one of the rarest cases where the clash of different ideas of Power Metal has been involuntarly brought up. A huge clash of ideas between Sam, the host and the fans. I think that most of the self proclaimed "huge Power Metal fans" are resting too much on the same melodic bands, and so they identify this genre with tons of keyboards, double bass carpets, fantasy lyrics and so on. But Power Metal is, sure, also that, at least since the mid '90, but it's also so much more.
    Come on guys, open your mind, push yourselves! You're metalheads, you should be prone to discovery and challenge your hears. Stop meddling on the same Rhapsody and Stratovarius and go discover some Riot, Virgin Steele, Running Wild, Vicious Rumors, Jag Panzer, Metal Church, Manilla Road and so on! They'll be rougher, but they carry their on strong feeling of epic and powerful, with little or no keyboards and with tons of riffs.

    well already before the video starts, I can remove Scorpions, Iced Earth, Accept, Manowar, Yngwie Malmsteen, Nightwish, and Dio.
    1. Scorpions, Accept, Manowar and Dio all play regular classic heavy metal, with power metal influences either in the lyrics (Dio) or in the guitar harmonies (Scorpions) they clearly are an influence to the birth of power metal, without being power metal themselves.
    2. Iced Earth are not fully power metal, more like a mix of power and thrash, but mostly on the thrash side. Depending on the album (The Dark Saga, etc.) they can also be reg. heavy metal.
    3. Yngwie Malmsteen touches to power metal in some way but is closer to neoclassical metal. While neoclassical metal mostly focuses on the guitar's virtuosity and classical elements, guitar is only the component of a whole in power metal, without the classical elements most of the time.
    4. Nightwish used to be power metal but left the genre after Wishmaster, they haven't been part of the power metal branch in the last 15 years or so.

    • @laliwil
      @laliwil 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dragonforce and RoF definitely belong in the power metal category.
      1. even though keyboards are not used in every band, it is a strong aspect of power metal
      2. melodies in the guitar, dual harmonies, long crazy solos
      3. overall fast songs with some ballads in each albums
      4. lyrics are strongly based around fantasy
      Rainbow should be removed, they are closer to some kind of melodic hard rock. Even though they surely are an influence to the power metal subgenre, they are not power metal themselves.
      most of Sonata Arctica's discography is power metal, with only Unia, TDoG (symph metal) and SGHN (some kind of hard rock) being something else. Their main genre always has been power metal, and they even came back to their roots in some way with Pariah's Child.
      Virgin Steele are a nice mix of prog-power-symph. Their power side is definitely strong, but I still hesitate about them, maybe we could allow them in the category.

    Some of my favorites are a bit on the extreme side. ashes of ares. Matt Barlow is a vocal god among men and a great follow up from his time in iced earth and Van Williams blows my mind with his intro to the messenger.
    charred walls of the damned. Where I feel Barlow is more on the passionate soulful side, Ripper Owens has power and grit for days and days. Rich Christie (death) adds his heavy edge which I felt was a perfect evolution of the genre.
    Most of all...
    Demons and Wizards!!!!! Iced Earth and Blind Guardians basrard love child. Touched by the Crimson King and Fiddler on the green are some of the most impressive songs ever created to the genre and IMO ever.

    Here's the thing: as much as I admire Sam and Banger Films for their great documentary work on the subject of Metal music, ever since the 1st documentary I have always felt the concept of the "Metal Family Tree" is inherently flawed, and this video is reassuring of that.
    Heavy Metal music is diveded into a lot of sub-genres and those sub-genres get divided into sub-sub-genres and so on; at some point there's cross-pollination between some of these sub-genres making the whole "labeling" thing something that very likely will lead to controversy one way or the other because at this point we have reached greyish areas.
    Bands like Manowar, Savatage, Iced Earth, Blind Guardian and Primal Fear represent a hard-edged brand of the "Power Metal" sound; whilst bands like Stratovarius, Sonata Arctica, Angra and Kamelot represent a more "polished" approach to the very same sound. But surely there will be people who won't agree with this because in the end of it, it's a matter of perspective.

    Rhapsody belongs here, when I think of symphonic metal i think of epica, within temptation, edenbridge and such, but Rhapsody and Angra - and also old Nightwish - was more power than sympho/filmscoremetal, have always been powermetal with symphonic/orchestral elements. And old Sonata qualifies to be on the list. Edguy and Avantasia too. When it comes to the modern power I would absolutely mention Orden Ogan and Powerwolf.

  • @oskarstrom4034
    @oskarstrom4034 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Rhapsody/Rhapsody of Fire is THE power metal band, as far as I'm concerned. Italian symphonic fantasy power metal would be my definition of Rhapsody. I guess it's a matter of what you define as power metal. I think, for me, power metal needs the "gallop" riffs, with a smattering of bass drums and some major harmonies. Rhapsody does not belong with the likes of Nightwish.

      I love Conception (with Tore Ostby, who went on to form Ark) but they are more progressive than power - even if they ended up having a huge influence over the current scene, in that without Conception then Kamelot wouldn't be who they are, nor would Avantasia, or many others. I'm sure Jorn would have hit the scene (he was also in Ark) but still... the natural progression came straight out of Conception into Ark that gave Jorn Lande his open door.

    Power Metal to me is: Helloween, Hammerfall, Grave Digger, Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, Stratovarius, Sabaton, Rhapsody Of Fire, Edguy, Avantasia, Dream Evil, Kamelot (melodic power metal) Dragonforce and Sonata Arctica (even though I don't like the last two much). Some of these are a little bit symphonic or proggy but the vocals and riffs are there. Running Wild is "pirate hard rock", Symphony X is prog/power together with Pagans Mind, Masterplan has Jorn so it goes more like melodic hard rock with symphonic elements. Angra went prog when Falaschi left the band and Lione came around. Even though Edguy has some huge hard rock and classic metal influence they released Vain Glory Opera and Mandrake. Iced Earth was always more of a thrashy 80's NWOBHM influenced metal with dramatic vocalists.

    Originally, during the 80's, "Power Metal" came from the US : Vicious Rumors, Obsession, Helstar, Apocrypha, Hexx, Wild Dogs, Liege Lord, Hades, and many more...
    In Europe, this term was used less. Accept or Zed Yago were pure "Heavy Metal" while early Helloween or Rage were "Speed Metal" (or "Heavy/Speed Metal" !). Scorpions was a "Hard Rock" band.
    It's a matter of generation. Some definition change over time, music too, bands too... The term "Power Metal" has different meanings depending the generation you belong.

    • @DropTehBazz
      @DropTehBazz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Blood Eagle 88 NWOBHM was a musical movement starting in the late 70's. Judas Priest had existed for a decade at that point, and released 5 studio albums.
      And calling NWOBHM a genre is like calling the british invasion a genre. It was a time-specific movement in music that, although the bands influenced eachother, really had no rules attached, and has only come to be regarded as a "specific sound" after-the-fact. Metalheads would make for the best librarians, don't you think?

    • @DropTehBazz
      @DropTehBazz 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Blood Eagle 88 Black metal is a genre, first wave of black metal isn't. Simple, right? The reason it had it's own distinct sound as you say is because many of the bands influenced each other, or drew from the same influences, but there were no real criteria. Compare Motörhead and Iron Maiden. They are as different to eachother as you can get, yet they're both nwobhm. The only criteria for nwobhm was that you had to be a British metal band during a certain period in time (late 70's to mid 80's approx.) It's really easy to just boil down the essence of musical movements into an easily defined set of rules and calling it a genre, but that is the antithesis of what music is and how it works. When these bands were creating music, they were doing something new, there were no rules. It's only after-the-fact that people are saying "alright this is how it's supposed to go", which is rather stupid, you see.

    Jason, I have a question for you...
    Could bands such as Triumph& Zebra fit onto the Power metal branch?
    they had the vocals ,material& sound for it

    There should be a separate Symphonic Metal episode. I don't think segmenting symphonic black metal, or symphonic power metal is necessary, just any band that utilizes classical songwriting arrangements and large symphony orchestras. Bands that come to mind: Nightwish, Rhapsody of Fire, Sonata Arctica as mentioned. But also: Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir (they both don't fit in black metal), Fleshgod Apocalypse (they don't fit in melodic death metal), Yngwie Malmsteen, Abigail Williams, Apocalyptica, Avantasia, Ayreon, Epica, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and Septicflesh.

    21:45 - I could have sworn I included Kamelot and Rhapsody of Fire in that comment.
    32:04 - Glad I could help get one of the best US power bands on this chart. \m/
    Its too bad this list ended up being so Eurocentric, but what can you do when the European style and it's offshoots are so much more popular.

      +MrRitualSuicide So you're to blame for Manilla Road? Can you please explain?
      I'm all for having US bands in there (Personally I'd prefer to have two separate branches).
      Virgin Steele, Iced Earth, Kamelot, and Manowar are all US bands, by the way.
      You could have included so many others instead of Manilla Road, though: Leatherwolf, Pretty Maids, even WASP.

    Firewind is sorely missing from this list. "Between Heaven And Hell", "Burning Earth" , "Forged In Fire", "Allegiance", "The Premonition" are all fantastic albums, with the latter being an absolute masterpiece and "Immortals" is both a triumphant return to form and one of the best metal albums of 2017 so far. They've earned their place in the pantheon and not to mention, Gus G, is one of the best guitarists on the planet.

    Iron Maiden and Judas Priest should've made this list, if only for the fact that they inspired damn near all the bands on this list. Also, since Accept is on the list, U.D.O. should be on there too by association.

    You cannot LOOK cool playing keyboards (think Edgar Winter and the key-tar) but you can absolutely sound cool (think Rainbow in the Dark).

      Matthew Norman Don't bother bringing the 70s up here.. I couldn't stand Edgar Winter, because I've always been a Rod Argent fan . ( Argent may be closer to being a inspiration for Power Metal , than that pompus key-tar playing one hit wonder ( Frankenstein wasn't great of a song either) Edgar Winter !

    Rainbow one of my all time favorite bands with Dio. However, I wouldn't call them "power metal" lyrics topic style may have set a foundation for later power metal bands. I see Rainbow as a continuation of bands like Black Sabbath and Deep Purple in the evolution of heavy metal.

    • @Grodd70
      @Grodd70 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@juliereminiec4937 That era of Rainbow was more radio friendly. If I was going to classify it I'd say more of hard rock with a pop music flair.

    The comment was already made but keyboards never looked cooler than the way Jon Lord made them look. Saw old footage of Deep Purple and Jon Lord and Richie Blackmore were alternating back and forth solos and just rocking the fuck out to the music they were creating and it was just bad ass to watch. Thank you for moving the Scorpions Accept and DIO out of this subgenre they have more of the classic metal sound. Omen was a trip to see mentioned being I havent thought about them in years. Armored Saint should have been added.

    Yes for sure there needs to be a Symphonic Metal episode. Nightwish is one of the great bands in the genre. As you said Epica, Sonata Arctica, and all those need to be together for sure. Bands to add to the Symphonic Metal genre are Sirenia and Delain for sure. Nice mention of Sabaton I just got into them this past week I'm really into every song I hear from them. I want to see them live for sure.

    • @bluebehir

      @Dragondarkness30 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did mention Sirenia. I haven't really listened to Tristania's music but I do agree from what I know they belong in the genre. Also Leaves'Eyes, Doro maybe and Xandria.

      @AzhidaReminiec9999 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      not really..there are bands that can fit on to two charts both tristania & Sirenia could fit on to two charts.. or maybe there could be a symphonic gothic metal chart ?

      blue, both tristania & sirenia were mentioned on the gothic metal chart... but,to me ..both bands would be perfect to add to two charts...or start a new one symphonic gothic metal?

  • @princealigorna7468
    @princealigorna7468 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Since you guys took the older bands off, you should have an episode of trad metal. Put those guys on that list along with Deep Purple, Uriah Heap, early Judas Priest, as well as modern bands like Cauldron, Bullet, Wolf, Witchcraft (since you refused to put them on the doom list, but they aren't really folky enough to be straight folk metal to me), and Fozzy.
