Should the US be neutral on Israel-Palestine? | Head to Head

  • In this episode of Head to Head, Mehdi Hasan challenges Martin Indyk on the US-Israel relationship.
    Formerly the United States' ambassador to Israel, assistant secretary of state for Near East Affairs, and US special envoy for Israeli-Palestinian negotiations in 2013-2014, Martin Indyk has been at the heart of US-Israel relations for several decades. He worked as adviser to US President Bill Clinton and was a member of his negotiating team at the Camp David talks in 2000.
    We challenge him on whether the US has been an unbiased mediator in peace talks, whether its role has been to play "Israel's lawyer", and the consequences for peace in the Middle East.

      I think it comes down to “race”. Most Israelis are either white, or white-passing. Most Arabs are not. This is a major motivator in the way the USA makes policy decisions in the middle east.

AIPAC is a foreign agent by definition. 18,000 AIPAC supportive so called Americans do not represent America. That organization needs to be purged from America.

      @@qwite9309 I agree that the current administration sees the constant state of conflict as beneficial for their cause but, the Israeli people would much rather live in peace than conflict. There have also been other administrations led by the likes of Shimon Perez, Ehud Barak, and Menachem Begin who really did try to make peace. Israel offered 97% of the West Bank back to the PLO in 2000 and 100% in 2005 but, talks broke down after the right of return was capped. Palestinians want every Palestinian displaced since 1947 and their family to have the right of return to Israel with full citizenship, benefits, and financial reperations. This could be about 2-5 million people at this point and Israel wouldn't be able to take on such a financial burden. This would also skew the demographics of the country and make Jews a minority within a generation or two. No Israeli government would agree to this and because this is an issue most Palestinians will not compromise on we will most likely not see a resolution to the conflict anytime soon. If the Palestinians could agree on a cap to the right of return number I truly believe that we could have peace within a few years. The settlements aren't really an issue for me, I would be ready to give them all to the Palestinians and allow the settlers the opportunity to either sell their homes and move back to Israel or live under the Palestinian flag. Another issue would be the Jordanian border but, I believe that we can have a joint Israeli/Palestinian coalition for a period of time after which there would be a transition and the Palestinian military can take full control of that border. Obviously there would be other issues like landswaps and trade but, those could all be worked out to the mutual benefit of both Israel and Palestine.

    • @qwite9309
      @qwite9309 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The General Eeh I wouldn’t say it would make Jews the minority. Since there’s a lot of Europeans Jews who can still fled to Israel since it’s a religon and not an identity the population can boost much faster than normal countries because of how you became a resident. I’m not sure what to make of peace talks yet since I haven’t looked into it I heard if Yasser Arafat accepted it extremists would attempt to kill him but that could be false. But Israel shouldn’t have displaced Palestinians in that since obviously there would be no coming back from it. Also they shouldn’t have encouraged Israeli settlements this being the best example of Zionist nationalism (I’m talking about the people who think they are coming back to judea not the normal people who love the conditions in the West Bank and other reasons like that). I feel like Israel should honor its deal for the land for peace but I don’t really agree for Jordan but I rather have king Abdullah lead us than Israel or Hamas. I feel like a constitutional monarchy will give us more freedoms than Hamas or Israel.

      @@qwite9309 I get where you're coming from and I'm very happy to have found common ground on some issues we can both agree on. We're obviously not going to agree on every issue but, if more people like us can find common ground then we can put pressure on the governments to make a reasonable push toward peace. This isn't a black and white issue, there's a lot of gray area and nuance and ultimately it's going to take people on both sides to make compromises to achieve peace. No one can get 100% of what they want. Not Israel, not Palestine, but, hopefully, we can reach an amicable middle ground which both sides can live with for the benefit of both the Palestinian and Israelis people.

Mehdi summed up the whole discussion in one very realistic example asking the US diplomate: "If there was a dispute between you and your wife, would you be OK if the person is chosen to resolve the issue were a very good friend (i.e. a staunch supporter) of your wife". No wonder there when the diplomat said that would be acceptable. How can a judge resolve issues between parties if the judge were not impartial. Simply put, there would be no fairness towards Palestinians as long as the big brother, mighty U.S.A stands firmly by the side of Israel. Peace process is a bologna.

    This man clearly said "I am pro Israel and I am proud of it" he is sitting there with his arrogant attitude, smirking not talking the situation in the middle east seriously. You are just hitting a brick wall with this man.
