so..... the question is what do your patterns on paper look like?

Doesn’t sound like you patterned your gun/choke combo at all. I have superior results using Long Beards, but I pattern all my guns and chokes with many loads.

ALWAYS pattern your gun before hunting

I patterned the Remington Nitro 3”#4 at 45 yards, works great out of a .660 choke. What I am using this year.

Thanks for the comment. You will get alot more distance with the #4. I did a test with Nitro #4, #5, #6 in 30mph wind. The #4 was really not affected by the wind. #6 were blown off target by 5".

The only lonbeard shell I've had a good pattern with is the 12 ga 2 3//4 numb 5s. I've been using the 3 inch nitro 5s for years they are my go to.

Thank you for the comment! Nice not to see the usual hate over this video. The hate I have gotten over saying something bad about Longbeard is unreal. Glad someone else agrees with him. Thanks!

Choke is too tight, and interfering. Shot is more dense than the pad, no problems with that. But if you can use a cheaper round and still get good results. Great!

Thank you for the comment. That's the conclusion I have reached. I have gotten allot of hate over this video. All these Long Beard fans think its the greatest thing ever. Well for me in my gun Rem Nitro out shoot the long beards. Recently I ran into a similar issue with power belts and muzzloader. The oppiste was happening they are undersized. Anyways when I load my own shotgun shells the wads don't get torn up and lay right outside the muzzle. I think it has to do with the resin in the Long beard and tight choke.

@@outdoorswithcam Have you ever mic. the turkey choke? It would be interesting to know?
Or a more important question should be; what are the pressures climbing to in your gun when firing XRs? Things might be getting unsafe.
Thirty years ago when I started turkey hunting, I used a modified choke. I lost a little yardage but it threw a great pattern. Back then too tight of a restriction and the pattern/point of impact would walk around a little bit and could cause a miss. Every gun is different, My current gun is the 835 ulti-mag and I can kill a turkey well over 50 yds with it, heck I could go 70yds with xrs. So the newer technology is great. But whether you're talking computers, cell phones or shot shells, technology is only great when it works.
TSS is another example. It can even shoot a little farther, but who can really afford it? The whole idea of buying a gun is shooting it, and practicing with it. Some of these guys are more wrapped around having the technology then being a good hunter. Buying a nice turkey gun then saying I can't afford to shoot.-- it is dumb. Then to add insult to injury, they resurrect the .410 into a turkey gun. Are you kidding me? It's all about personal egos combined with technology. The dead turkey does not care how much money you spent to kill him, and butterballs are still cheaper. If I had it my way, I would have every kid in America shoot a 28 gauge instead of a .410 for their first experience in shooting shotguns. The 28 gauge is a sweet little gun, yet nonexistent. The shot strings are entirely different, with the 28 crushing any .410 especially when wing shooting. Then a young man could have great memories with the 28 and break the cycle of a .410, and kids would also have a dual purpose gun for wing shooting. (And I would bet that a 28 gauge filled with TSS would outperform the .410.)
Nice talk--Good luck hunting this year.

@@troybelanger974 Thanks for the great comment. Yes I have. The measurement is in one of the old comments. I was going to go down the TSS rabbit hole. BUT I couldn't find any shot. Bought the wads and shot cards but couldn't find a good source of TSS shot. SO gave up. I have a reloader. I have a 835. But I found my 500 more accurate. I just can't take the 3 1/2 recoil. Then I find my problem with the 835 is it actually a 10 gauge until it gets half way down the bore. But where I am at now I will probably never use a shotgun again. Last 4 turkeys I have harvested has been with a bow. Easier to kill. they die faster. Others don't run off. They Leave a great blood trail. No shot in the meat. Just alot more fun to use a bow. Check out some of my videos.

I feel the same way I am not going to buy a special choke just to shot them

Carson makes a choke they say is designed specifically for the long beards and I’ve papered them at 40 and it’s like decapitation

Thank you for the comment. I have given up on the "long beard". Several people have told me my choke is just to tight and there is a hole in the pattern. But the nitros pattern great. WHy is the wad on the "long beards" always shredded?

  • @engsetters4633

Why you pattern before going out.

    • @outdoorswithcam
      @outdoorswithcam  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I guess I am just dumb. Every other shell looks good and pattern well. So I keep hearing all this marketing hype about the Long beard. Its the greatest thing since sliced beard. At $32 box I didn't want to waste any. So yup cost me several turkeys. Its Nitros from walmart for me at $10. Shoots better and further than Longbeards.

@@outdoorswithcam the long beards have good reviews. But it's not going to shoot the same in every gun and or choke. If you have a great pattern with a $10 box, great! You're lucky. Shotguns are just weird like that. You can take 2 of the same guns, with the same chokes, and get 2 very different results. I use cheap federals for waterfowl like $16 a box, I get a perfect pattern. Then the expensive federals pattern absolutely horrible. One gun I have patterns (light loads) winchesters perfect, Remingtons shoots off and way too wide of a pattern.

I shot at 30 yards and the long beard xr didn’t even penetrate card bored shot at 50 barley hit the left side of a 4’x4’ card bored. shooting a benllie super black eagle 3 with a pattern master code black goose the nitro turkey shot just as good of a pattern at 50 that it did at 30. Anything about that?

What did your wad look like??? That is what my video was about. When I shoot the long beard the wad is shredded. That is why they don't pattern for me. Choke is to tight for them. The shot is in a resin and when it goes through the choke the wad get shredded blowing the pattern apart. The Nitros shoot great and they are a whole lot cheaper... Everyone I talk to says I need to buy an expensive choke. nope just going to walmart and buy $11 nitros and go kill a turkey

I am glad they work for you. Thanks ffor the comment.
I am not alone. I have had lots of people tell me that can't shot them. I tried and lost several turkeys because of it. The pedals rips off the wad at the choke. That blows the pattern apart. I think its because the Longberard's shot is encased in resin. I don't remember now this video was from years ago. But the wad and pedals would be in front of the barrel. When I shot other brands you would find the wad 30 yard down range with the pedals intake. I believe it comes down to the choke. I am not going to buy another choke just to shoot these shell. I quit using a shot gun on turkeys anyways. Last 5 or so have all been with a bow. Just call them in closer. They die alot faster and bllod everywhere with bow. I think they taste alot better when they bled out then you blow their head off.

When all the other chokes shoot fine with all other shot 🤷‍♂️
