    Mourinho talking about the superleague
"I knew it was coming and I was surprised by the reaction. I was expecting football authorities to react but the way the fans reacted. Every fans united in the street to say that basically football is for them. Belongs to the people. That was incredible to see. It will come back. You know how what I call the 3 piece suits people are so it will come back but all I can say is that the fight must be the same when it returns to protect the idea that you win because you deserved and you have to qualify for competitions and keep tournaments intact because with superleague the leicester story never happens. You kill it and I'm on their side. I'm a football lover before being a manager. I don't support a club. My club was setubal. It's my fathers club and then I played there and it was my club. So that feeling of tradition and the roots of the game speaks to me "

What is happening to those lower level clubs are happening to clubs in the bundesliga too. Interesting. I recollect that Newcastle's new owners categorically stated they did not want to join a Super League nor did they want to move from St James' Park despite difficulties in expanding it. Their repurchase of land sold by Ashly shows they meant the latter. Hopefully they also meant their statement about the Super League.

I'm an Argentinian man, but I have to admit that English football league is the best in the World. So I highly agree with everything you said. However, I think that Champions league is more in danger, and it's a pity because Champions league has a very long history, with great stories for instance the Nottingham Forest's ones. Those small teams will never win an important championship again, just because they won't even have the chance. I don't like it, Football must keep open for everyone.

Prem is only best because of their oil and American owners. And prem is the one which caused this. Champions League itself is going to have a terrible format in near future also teams like forest will now get more opportunity in the champions League. And who knows they might strike a deal where clubs like forest who win the champions League will get opportunity in the super league after that, this does sound good more middle table and lower clubs will get a chance to win champions leagues and get financial might rather than just waiting for an oil or American owner to buy them out like top prem clubs.

Then along came the Premier League and Sky, ploughing in billions of £££'s and ultimately sending the price of attending games sky rocketing. The average Joe cannot afford to go to the games week in week out like he used to, even if he could get tickets. Now it's all season ticketed, corporate boxes and matchday experience packages... if you can't get tickets you have to pay to watch it on Sky.

What Mark fails to mention is the capital injections some of the biggest clubs in the PL get. These clubs get 100's of millions to spend with bare minimum rules to stop them. The fact that Chelsea can go and spend 600m in 6 months is insane, regardless of whatever loophole they use. Clubs like Villarreal that made it into the semi's of the UCL last season and won UEL the season before can't spend 25m to retain one of the players that helped them get success (Lo Celso) so they have to keep loaning him. The Super League isn't perfect but something needs to be done so that smaller clubs can make more of an impact.
Another note is Nottingham Forest have spent more than Barca and Bayern, even though they've just joined the PL and are in a relegation battle.

Actually, he's completely wrong about that.
For one, the leagues are not destroying themselves, the PL is destroying other leagues by throwing ridiculous amounts of money at all the best players from other leagues to join the PL. And also, nobody wants their league to sell themselves out for oil money, except for the pl of course. Neither the fans nor the leagues want that. However, because the pl is destroying football and international competition with their ridiculous amounts of money, some top clubs fear that in the long run, they wont be able to keep up in european football, which is why they want the super league. Thats just a few Clubs tho, not whole leagues and definitely not the fans. And clearly, its the PL and their oil money that caused all of this. This has nothing to do with leagues messing their own leagues up or whatever. The PL is the problem because they put money over the love for football which lead to this crazy development.

The prem was formed for money though and even called the super league during early proposals, it was in a nutshell the bigger clubs wanting a bigger share of more money (back then they were called the big 5, Man United, Spurs, Everton, Arsenal and Liverpool). People look back and think it's fine because it worked out in the end that the Premier League then sat above the Championship and came to an agreement with the EFL. But they were willing to break away from that to secure the large TV deal, the idea being they'd only show games involving the top teams, thus they'd bag the money.
There was zero money in English football in the 80s, especially while English clubs were banned from European comps - as that was lifted in 1990, the big owners demand for more money increased and ultimately we get the Premier League and massive TV deals.
You describe the Prem as the current super league which is interesting, because look at the league. 2 English managers currently in the top 10, how many star players are English? How many owners are English? How many fans are based in England? Why does this matter? Because if the managers, players, owners and fans are foreign, of course they'll welcome the chance of getting to see their club. Clubs are businesses and need/want international support - for some teams in the prem most of their fans will be overseas - not because they don't have fans in England or the UK, but they're a massive international brand and have been for decades now.
I just think we're kidding ourselves if we think the prem will be the top flight league going forward. There's always bigger wealthier owners, there's always a bigger TV market... I'm not saying it should happen, but the prem was formed to make money, that's it. It didn't care about grass roots or Leicester being able to win a prem (or Blackburn back then), it was money. Why would that suddenly have changed?

Mark made a great point with how amazing the prem is. From top to bottom, Leeds getting a draw at Old Trafford, Everton beating Arsenal, Chelsea being held down by mid table teams. The PL isn't successful because of their competitiveness. It generates more money because they have more big names. You think the average football casual is interested in a match like Everton vs Brighton, Brentford vs Leeds? No they want to see Arsenal vs Tottenham, the Manchester Derby, Man United vs Liverpool. And you have the most of that compared to other leagues. The problem for the other leagues is that you distributed that huge income equally so that even new teams like Nottingham have enough money to buy players which ended up in the top halves of the other leagues and play international football. I would also say that language is a good bonus for the interest in the PL. It's much easier for non football fans to get into the PL if they know some english. If you want to really follow the other leagues and get into it as a foreigner you would probably have to learn another second language besides english.
