For all of you who dug us before, a long time ago. and for those of you who want to dig it now !!!! Great job !!!!! Been addicted to Frank Marino for 40 years 😂 still in HEAVY rotation in my house !!!!
Back in ‘71 or so I went to a friends house to see some hot shot guitarist. Here was this skinny pimply face teen who wasn’t much to the eye but when he plugged in we were never the same. That kid who blew us away was a young Frank Marino.
“this album is dedicated to those who have unsuccessfully tried to hamper the inevitable forward movement of this band” … such a great quote from Frank
He's Calling (especially the live versions) simply blew me away. Been a FM and MR fan ever since. If I only had a fraction of that kind of creativity....
Franks cover of Johnny B Goode on the live album is absolutely the best ever recorded … he was such a great example of what going to concerts was about … energy and music 😎
Saw him live 3 times. Have every album he's ever put out. From "Maxoom" to the end. I think 16 or 17 vinal records. He played here locally near my small town at the "Orange Blossom" restaurant. A very small venue with maybe 75 person audience. Just a great player. Thank you David for this. Much appreciated.
Thank you David🎸🤘 I've been waiting for some new episode about Frank for awhile now! Frank was also a big influense on Yngwie M that used to play covers of FMMR before he got fame. Frank really deserve to be highlighted more for he's awsome music and extravaganta guitarplaying! Pls give us more David!
Takes me back to 1980 as a freshman in HS trying to figure out Frank licks on an acoustic because that's all I had. I was awful but man all I wanted to do was be like Frank.
Saw Frank Marino 01/08/81 in the UK. He was part of the Heavy Metal Holocaust along with Ozzy, Motorhead and Triumph etc. Frank was absolutely amazing especially during his solo spot. Privileged to have witnessed the late great Randy Rhoads the same day. 😊
TY David for this! Frank Marino is IMHO the most incendiary Blues-rock / Psychedelic-Rock guitarist, EVER! I've seen him live numerous times way back "in the day", and he would leave audiences spellbound with the fire and intensity that he played with. I love Jimi and have studied him over a Lifetime, but out of all my 1st-tier favorites; Hendrix, Clapton (Cream days), SRV, and Robin Trower, I have to say, Frank "Dragonfly" Marino is #1 for my taste!
Doors of Illusion!! Great guitarist, a hero actually. His songs have soul. I personally love 'Dragonfly'. First heard of Frank's music way back in 1981!
When I was a kid, Frank Marino was pretty popular among my friends. Especially anyone who was really into Hendrix. Speaking of, Randy Hansen did the best Hendrix covers. We opened for him and Biddy Miles once. Randy showed up at 3pm for soundcheck, and the rest of the bands showed up at 4, but Buddy was late and made them not let any of us do a soundcheck before him. He was so late he didn't get a soundcheck. So yea, I don't like Buddy much, but had a great time talking to Randy and watching the crazy show he put on. At one point the crowd literally handed him down from the balcony to the crowd below while he was playing the whole time.
I'm 37, and while i feel like loads of people in my generation, especially rock guitarists, have relatively more appreciation for players of that time, there are still very few people under 50, much less 40 who are familiar with Frank. But he's definitely someone to note and I've always loved his work. My awareness of him and Mahogany Rush comes from later players like Paul Gilbert who regularly praised their heroes. Tracing back the lineage of inspiration is infinitely rewarding as all at once a music fan, player and artist. Frank is one of many great examples I'm so grateful to be familiar with because I've taken the time to explore the music that paved the way for my generation 😊 Thanks as always for sharing your unique look into a great musician's style 🙌😎
@@JeiElRai When I first learned guitar, I learned the blues, Clapton, Page, Hendrix, Angus Young, just guys that knew the basics and packed a punch. More rockheads, especially guitarists, need to know about Frank. How this guy escaped me after decades of following music is beyond me.
@@jimkon1479it's amazing how even guys in some huge bands have remained overlooked as players. Lindsay Buckingham and Mark Knopfler, for example have written and performed massive hits while remaining largely unrecognized individually (they could walk around Hollywood and not get bothered nearly as much as Jimmy Page got instance). Of course this goes even more for the bands like Mahogany Rush that are arguably more of "musicians' musicians" as it were. Players who continue broadening their horizons eventually encounter April Wine, Rory Gallagher, Max Webster, Stryper, Loudness and others that didn't quite crack the global mainstream to the extent of having all their members' contributions widely recognized... But honestly, the surplus of great music to the point no one could ever catch up on it all, is a pretty good problem to have 😁
Love Frank Marino. My good friend Dave Goode Has played drums for Frank for well over 20 years. I’ve been a fan of his since 1974. And I love your show Brother!
What a great lesson. I was impressed with the last Frank Marino lesson, now this one too!!! I’ve been listening to Norwegian Wood (Mahogany Rush) since 1979 when I bought the album. Huge fan! I’ve seen him live once in the mid 80’s too in a small town in Quebec where he played. He was incredible as is to be expected. His BluRay of Live at the Agora is something to watch. Incredible playing. Loads of material to learn from. Thanks
So cool. Seen Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush a couple of times in the 70's. Both him and Trower took parks of the Hendrix sound to their own place(sorry, never got into SRV for whatever reason). Yes he was a Badass. Glad to see you doing this video. 👍
That tune is.....DRAGONFLY! I discovered Frank from a promotional video with Joe Bonamassa, Pat Travers, Johnny Winter, and got blown away. I love him each time I listen. Thank you for highlighting him. Guitar lessons on Frank are few and far between.
I saw Frank in 1978 (I think lol ) he did the M.Rush live, basically in its entirety...great show...wow how things have changed since then...great seats, under 10 bucks ..always loved "The Answer' was the opening song. Thank you for all you do David.
I wish more people remembered that about the 70's. I knew a lot of people who paid their own way through college; tuition, room and board, with just a weekend job. I personally knew two people with minimum wage jobs that bought houses a 20 minute drive from San Fransisco. Small businesses were everywhere and everything was built to last.
Really enjoyed this! Thanks so much. Frank Marino is certainly a guitarist deserving wider recognition. Attended some of their concerts back in the 70's. Never met Frank Marino, but I did get to know Jimmy Ayoub, the drummer for Mahogany Rush. Got to jam with Jimmy which was always a blast! Cheers. Keep up the great videos!!!
@@jonholland6067 Yes, he was ill for quite some time. Jimmy left this world a year ago on December 10th. He'll be missed by many. ~Best regards from Montreal. BTW I'm not at all surprised that Frank gave your video the "Thumbs up".

First heard of Frank,on his 78 ,live LP ,and saw him ,in the U>K> in the eighties, vasrly underappreciated,so good ,rhat you showcase him here, rhanks Dave.
I saw Mahogany Rush at Cal Jam II in 1978 and again a small venue (Santa Monica Civic) in the early 1980s. Amazing shows. I’m not sure why but I think Frank Marino is often overlooked in the discussion of guitar greats.
I had tickets to that show … had to leave town went to Denver co., but it all worked out . About a week later he played a club called the rainbow. The Juggernaut tour !!! Coming from So.Cal I was blown away by the people passed out laying in the Snow 😂😂😂 I miss the Santa Monica civic great place !!!!!!
My first Live Concert At the Orlando Fl Tangerine Bowl Rock Super Bowl 1979. I was 14, It was awesome! Blackfoot, Brownsville, Frank M and M Rush, Aerosmith, Ted Nugent.
Good job, so happy that you’re doing a lesson on Frank he’s the pride of Montreal, you really should listen to the album Real live from 2004 his rendition of red house is insane
I Never noticed it before but Kings X sounds a lot like Frank.not sure if you’ve done a dive into Kings X but I’d love to hear a breakdown of their thing. Great stuff! I’m a fan!
Bro, your tones are badass! What year is your Strat and are you using the Gen 4 Noiseless/Shawbucker loaded pickguard setup? Frank is one of my closest friends and this video made me smile. Very well done!
Transported back to my teen years on this one - Good Work . Maybe a bit grandiose for some but I was always a sucker for World Anthem - almost prog in its arrangement LOL
He's using that amp you see right behind him. It's a Behringer. I don't know the model. He has talked about it before on videos about his gear. It's him though, not his gear really. He probably sounds a lot better through a better amp. The thing that I've found that makes me sound best is trying to make it sound good with no amp. lols When you plug in again, dial the attack back down and now you have way more control.
We always were in awe of the rumor that Frank was knocked half dead in an auto accident and when he woke, he was possesed by the spirit of Jimi Hendrix! The 70s ya know
This relentlessly productive channel is criminally undersubscribed.
Agree.
I couldn’t agree with you more.
For sure!
Spread the word. I put this a couple of my coworkers onto this channel.
Cause it's hyper niche for true guitar lovers in a very historically rooted sense!
Let’s not overlook the fact that he’s singing while playing super cool riff’s & blazing lead’s with that huge wall of sound !
For all of you who dug us before, a long time ago. and for those of you who want to dig it now !!!!

Tales of the Unexpected also has a stunning spacey guitar solo then followed by a jazzy smokin' solo. A beautiful track.

@FURDOG1961 I went to school with a friend of Yngwie that told me this!

The album "Tales of the unexpected" was released 1979 but the tapping techniques you hear in Norwegian wood was something he been doing for awhile.
