What I love about Paul is whenever he talks and plays guitar, his passion, joy, and enthusiasm makes it seem like he just discovered the instrument yesterday. He gets excitement out of the simplest things like a bend in an almost child-like way. For someone like me who's been playing for 20+ years, that's incredibly inspiring.
@@goryburk Oh I 100% see that now. We live in a world with so many great musicians there are still 100s if not 1,000s I am yet to appreciate properly. However, an hour in his company with Rick has made me want to explore Paul's work more. Top fella totally :)
The Rocky Theme shows beautifully what Paul has that many virtuosos lack, which is wit in their playing. He’s a very serious musician who has a light, joyful approach to the instrument, which is why we all love him so much.
Paul is such a crack up, " Leave that to the professionals" 😂. He's always so down to earth and humble, no arrogant attitude. Truly one of the best guitarists ever.
I'll never forget him saying motioning with his left hand, "this is the steering wheel." Then motioning with his right hand says, "This is the gas pedal." What an amazing allegory. And it's true.
Listen to 6:41-6:47 then skip to 7:06. PG is a legend and a hero for a reason. Dude burns people braincells with his shredding, knowledge, and technique and is abnormally humble. Definitely rock legend in my eyes. Glad people like Rick exist doing these types of interviews. You're doing every guitarist a favor.
Finger picking on an electric is so much harder than on classical nylon. Especially if you are a flesh to string type and don't use nails or finger picks. The lack of string tension and spacing was designed for finger style. Imo that's how everyone should approach finger style in the beginning. Even steel stringed acoustics aren't usually designed with finger style in mind. You can do it of course. Unfortunately the muscle memory gained on nylon won't immediately translate over to electric but it really helps.
I feel fortunate that my first guitar teacher as a kid made me learn dust in the wind. If you get that muscle memory early it never really leaves you. On the other hand, the big neoclassical string skips that Paul did at the end are way beyond my ability.
Absolutely is. Watching him is inspiring to the enth degree. The joyous exhilaration he displays is uplifting. He is one of the virtuosic players wherein skill comes from the sheer love and affection for music and finding warmth by having both rational and natural flow. Not as many as there are few, have disciplined light spiritedness. Vai to a definite point does too however he's of a haughtier light heartedness, a sharp soft kind soul might be about right.
I was a classically trained pianist prior to playing guitar. My brain too wanted to make my fretting hand move in a linear fashion, it took a lot of effort to overcome that instinct and think across the fretboard instead of up and down according to pitch. Met Paul briefly one time at a guitar clinic, he was very gracious and polite, despite obviously being jet-lagged.
Love how he brings up a 3 note lick and a number of ways you can finger that. This is the great thing with music, you can take 2-4 notes and it seems you have infinite options; the very hard thing is that you have infinite options. Too many choices screwed up many a musician. Love the excitement he still has for music.
My favorite guitar player. You think he's all mindless shredding because of his capabilities .... until you actually hear his music then you're blown away like his stuff with mr. Big..... Amazing
I love Paul. Every time I see him play in an interview he exudes a love for music like a child would have. Possibly the greatest guitar hero who is still a good person.
Great lesson on creating ways to overcome the physical challenges of getting the guitar to do your bidding. Trying to teach myself the guitar and am finding out one size doesn't fit all. The instrument is not going to change so I must adapt.
I was just having this conversation with my guitar tech yesterday. For some reason comparing guitar setups. I preferred High Action with lighter strings to be able to grab the string and it doesn't get away from me on bends! As Gilbert said, action does seem to get low down by G-F closer to the nut. I suppose it might depend though in what the frets are.
A few years back he came to our smaller city of Lawrence, KS and played at local awesome club The Bottleneck. I’m only 5 years younger than Paul and, like so many Gen X guitarists, remember when he came into the scene, as one of the Shrapnel Records guitar gods. Even though, back in 1989, I saw Mr Big open up for Rush, the Bottleneck show was something even more special. It was intimate and he was so engaging with the audience; with details on how he was playing and his approach to writing specific songs in the set. The band killed it, of course. He’s truly in the pantheon of the greatest to ever play the instrument. Also, talk about someone you could just hang out with! Nothing but respect.
Wow!! Paul is a vicious shredder and a great interview; hat's off to him for his technique advice; no wonder I couldn't play that stuff, I need to stick my elbow out a little further:)
One of the things i always liked about Paul is so much of his advice applys to non shredders as well. Kinda like Govan. Just sound general playing advice usable in any genre
@@vintagepipesnightmares Yeah the guy who had the right hand picking at 17 and was thrust forth onto multiple successful projects, endorsements and bands isn't that guy. Not to mention he definitely hasn't revamped and changed his playing style time and time again.
When I met Paul in a clinic that actually was a little jam-concert in Mexico City several years agoI had the chance to have a tiny talk with him and I asked Was the most difficult song that he had to learn or play and his answer was: Ooohhhh there is a lot of them, and I think of myself: really? He could play almost everything then I thought What a humble guy. He is great in many ways not just as an excellent musician
Haha, the bit where he shreds after the Eric Johnson bit .....my god....I was embarrassed to even look at my guitars. They all looked the other way as well. Oh the shame. Love you Paul - always a new lesson and a new way to feel inspired- to become a drummer.
Back in the day when my only access to Paul was his column in Guitar Player magazine, I always imagined he’d have this kind of mad professor energy to him. I’m glad to see I wasn’t wrong. Cool guy :)
In case some people don’t know what columns I was talking about.. I was inspired to look them up. They’re called Terrifying Guitar 101 and some guy on Reddit has uploaded a pdf where he has gathered most of them. Great stuff 👍
... Hey NEW GENERATION OF GUITAR PLAYERS! this man (PG) ... It's a living virtuoso... A true gem for the rock world, it's refreshing to still watching him being so happy and thrilled bout playing.
I play all my originals as a solo player but cover melody, harmony, rhythm and timing of parts within my arrangement by myself and record (for review and revision) as if I were performing live.. Bass and drums may be invited to join for a performance and then rehearsals are done with them.. I let their musicality inform my arranging.
Back in the late 80s, he was touring with Mr. Big. He did an in-store meet and greet and was demoing Ampeg amplifiers. There was about 30 of us in the music store and he was super cool. The funny thing I remember was he said learning guitar is just like eating Oreos. You eat one and then you play one note; you eat another Oreo and then you play two notes. Until the bag is gone. Haha, it was funny. I don’t think it’s quite as simple as that. He’s amazingly gifted.
High action supposedly aids volume. Light gauge are easier to push (bend). But those factors are more for acoustic guitar. In electric guitars, these factors meet the circuit you build, from effects to amp to speaker .. lot more happens in all that. Heavy strings might be a better idea. Lower action might serve the hands ... I have to go now, I'm so illustrious... LOL
"It's really hard (to slide) on 1 string" And THAT'S why Derek Trucks is the greatest slide player alive today. That's how you pick his tone out from anyone else's. He plays on 1 string A LOT. No one else does because it's way too difficult. It's his signature sound.
Paul has my vote on being one of the best players out there , Also gave lessons to years ago another favorite virtuoso guitarist Brian Patrick Carroll aka Buckethead !
This is Gary Oldman's best performance.... never breaks character, nails the accent, even learned to play guitar! Helluva actor.
So true. Ever notice that Neil Young and Bill Belichick are never seen in the same place at the same time?
Haha 🤣
I laugh with this ajsjsjsj
Hahaha!
*_Haha! I thought he looked like someone I've seen before!_*
Another musician in full command of his instrument who hasn't lost his humility and humor. Cool dude PG.
Why we love him.

Let's get Paul in a room chatting and jamming with Gregg Bisonette and Victor Wooten. 🎉
I was sitting here thinking the same thing. It also reminds me of how lucky I am to still have a band to play with after all these years.
I love when he says “within my limit of ability”. How many guitarists have his level of ability. Such a humble class act; Paul is great!
Back when the full video interview came out, I watched. I love Paul's energy, honesty, and his humble attitude. A rock guitar hero for sure.
Not heard much of his work but what a thoroughly nice bloke and refreshingly not up himself about his talent, which is considerable.

Its so encouraging to hear The Man himself has trouble with finger picking and hybrid picking. I certainly leave that to the professionals, lol
