  • Beautiful Old Torque Wrench Full Restoration
    One of the nicest torque wrenches ive ever seen! well it is now! This week i embark on another restoration journey and hopefully bring the life back to a long forgotten item.
    As you can see i have chosen a Vintage torque wrench to restore as its very unusual looking and i could see it has a lot of potential.
    On first inspection everything looks good, it seems complete and in working condition just a little stiff because of the rust but ill soon have that sorted out. So the first thing to do is strip it all down which is a very simple job surprisingly the dial cover is just a press fit brass item then from that point the casing is only held together by 4 screws and then it comes apart with a bit of prising and hammering.
    Once apart the plastic items were submerged in a bleach solution to brighten then and possibly take out the yellowing, In future i will use a retrobrite solution as the bleach didnt work too well. At the same time i also made up some DEOX C rust remover and placed the corroded items in it while i made a start on stripping the old paint from the casings.
    The paint was stripped by good old fashioned paint stripper and a wire brush rather than the media blaster as the aluminum felt quite soft and i didn't want to ruin the casings. once stripped i put the handle into the vise and welded up a hole someone had drilled ( probably for a string to hang the wrench up ) I dont have a TIG welder so i loaded up a spool of aluminum wire into the MIG and set about welding the holes up then dressed the welds back with a file and emery cloth.
    After this stage i primed the casing and while that was curing i set about zinc / electro plating the small rusted parts. After i was finished plating the primer had cured so i could wet flat out any defects and start painting some color. First i painted the dial housing silver so as to increase the visibility of the markings inside then this was masked off and the case was given several coats of Lucifer red metallic and a thick coat of clear to keep it looking glossy and sharp for years to come.
    After the paint was cured the brass and bare metal parts were buffed to a mirror shine and then its a case of greasing everything up and re-assembling the item and giving it a test.
    Thank you for watching and i hope to see you in the next video :)

    What a lovely item! Came out great too! I've always used AC Tig for welding ally, I suppose Mig is fine for filling holes, but it doesn't break through the oxide layer of the aluminium so the weld puddle never flows great, came out spot on with this though and it's not a structural weld so doesn't matter either way!

    • @RRCRestoration
      @RRCRestoration  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi,Thanks for a very informative comment :) Yeah i would never weld anything structural with ally wire in a mig the weld just isnt anywhere near good enough, but for filling holes and deep gouges it works a treat. I really do need to invest in a tig welder though for a few of my more exotic upcoming projects.

      HI,The inside was left bare as thats how it came from the factory, The screws were zinc plated and yellow passivated as i felt thats a better look rather than having them painted over.

    I was surprised you put only one coat of primer and then a different color? I thought paint doesn't like to stick to aluminum??

    • @RRCRestoration
      @RRCRestoration  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      HI, There were 3 coats of primer 3 coats of colour and 3 coats of clear i just didnt show all the coats as its a boring process to watch.

    Hi RRC another cracking job, that's a really nice old bit of kit, under the cover got to go with Honda (CBR/VFR) or Ducati of some sort just because of the red! trying to think of other bike makes that came in red, full size floating disc's so she must have a bit of power, how's the Scooby shaking down! Hi Wayne nice to see you again. All will be revealed soon, I think you'll enjoy this project ;). The scooby project is coming along nicely ive just been doing some research on what parts i need to run to get me to the 350 400 mark but while still keeping the engine bay looking fairly standard sounds easy but its harder than you might expect, Plus i want to respray the front end while im at it so the next episode on the scooby build is going to be a long one ;)

    big johnson would be proud of that torque wrench. I take it was Japanese as you had out the JIS philips?

    • @RRCRestoration
      @RRCRestoration  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Im not actually sure of the manufacturer or origin of this wrench as there are no makers marks which i find very strange for an old item, But yeah could possibly be Japanese as JIS drivers fir the screws perfectly.

    Wondering why you chose to use paint stripper instead of the sand blaster, sandblasting would have been a lot quicker and easier

    • @RRCRestoration
      @RRCRestoration  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I always use the sand blaster so for a change i thought id use paint stripper also the alloy is very soft and blasting risks damaging it.
