Old Spiral Jack Restoration ( screw jack , bottle jack )

  • In the spotlight for restoration this week is a rather old and crusty SPIRAL or SCREW BOTTLE JACK. Im not sure what year or make it is but i thinks its safe to say its quite old and has seen better days.
    The first thing to be done was to chock the jack up in the vice and drill the heads of the rivets off but as you will see in the video drilling them didn't weaken them sufficiently as they were solid steel rivets not hollow pops, so i had to take the violence level up a notch and break out the angle grinder and punches which worked a treat.
    Next step was a complete inspection to see what challenges lay ahead and much to my surprise the internal condition was way better than i was expecting.
    At this stage of the disassembly im sure lots of you will be rather upset with me for not removing the gear assembly from the main body and i have a perfectly good reason for not doing it. The screw/spiral is pinned to the main gear and i didn't have a good enough reason to remove it to warrant the risk of cracking the gear, and the main body of the jack has two key ways punched into the casing to prevent the slides coming out completely and again i didn't grind the key ways off to remove the spiral as i have no way of punching the keyways back in again. Anyway......
    Next was a thorough washing and degreasing with gunk engine cleaner to remove all the oil and grime and then a hot bath in all purpose cleaner to remove any final oil residue. I then gave all the parts a liberal coating of paint stripper and as you can see from my gloves the effect was immediate on this old paintwork, then all the parts got another cleaning before being left to soak for 24hrs in a rust removal bath.
    Now that the jack was in bare steel my first priority was to get a coat of primer on it to stop any moisture in the air or on my hands corroding the steel while rebuilding and getting ready for paint.
    The first job to tackle was rebuilding the bearing with new ball bearings and grease and ensuring that it runs smoothly. After that the main gear and screw was greased the bottom plate was fitted then riveted on solid with new pop rivets.
    Once that was done it was time for the final masking and start of the paint job. 3 heavy coats of high solid high build primer were applied and flatted back with 800 grit wet n dry to give a blemish free finish before moving onto the mid coat which is a skoda race blue metallic (very similar to Subaru world rally blue ). Then came several coats of clear till adequate depth and clarity were achieved.
    And after a quick polish of the bare metal components the restoration was complete and i must say im delighted with the way it turned out.

    I was okay until you used pop rivets to reattach the base. The rivets used in the original were steel solid flat head rivets that could take the pressure of the screw assembly inside against the bearing base. It is an old worm screw jack . Nissan made them for their cars back in the late 60's ,70's and 80's. Interesting video.

      Rivet in the best condition can't hold much more than 350 pounds each , again to work under a car near a ton with a jack held by aluminium rivet I would be very scared ! th-cam.com/video/MAVYtx5dvUA/w-d-xo.html

      Nice job RRC and I get that you view it as an ornament, but one day it will fall into someone else's hands, either stollen or an estate sale, and it will harm someone. At least print a warning label and stick it underneath it.

    • @justgonnastay
      @justgonnastay 5 ปีที่แล้ว +96

      Please explain the forces that you think will be at work on these rivets. If you look at the design, the rivets appear to do nothing more than hold the bottom plate in place. When in use, the bottom plate will be resting on a flat surface and the plate will absorb all of the lifting force placed upon the mechanism. There might be a very small rotational torque transferred to the rivets which will largely be absorbed through friction between the body of the jack and the bottom plate.

    • @justgonnastay
      @justgonnastay 5 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      If you are working under a car supported by a jack then you are being foolish. Always use jack stands. Besides, there are 8 rivets. 8x350=2800lbs of shear strength in a low-load direction. The load on the rivets is rotational, not lifting.

      John Since when is it the content creators job to deal with idiot's? Anyone who is dumb enough to lift a car with aluminium as there weak point almost deserves to have said car fall on them. He doesn't NEED make videos for 6 year old's. You guys act like you caught him or something when in reality why would you use a hot rivet for a hunk of metal that will sit on a table and never be used? hundreds of times the effort for nothing.

      The rivets don't have to be strong. There's really no pressure on them. The force is all downward anyway.

      It's his job since he posted it as a restoration, which in this case is a misleading title. Lots of people have little knowledge of engineering, material strengths etc and could easily believe this video shows a functional restoration instead of a refurbishment. When you produce content you have to take responsibility for it.

    Old indeed! One of my first tool acquisitions over 53 years ago and it was old then. Served me well for starting out and still at the ready if needed. Good job on the resto.

    The only thing I would change about this video would have been to use proper rivets and nit pop rivets? It’s very satisfying to se an old tool look so nice in the end!!

    Man, my dad was a traveling salesman and put 100,000k miles of a Ford Econoline van every year from the early 60’s to mid 70’s. As soon as I saw that jack I recognized it. Great job.
