Old Trolley Jack Restoration

  • A fun little restoration the whole family can enjoy. So sit back relax and let me take you on another Really Random restoration adventure :)
Yet again lurking in my friends shed was this tired and past its best Eversure trolley jack that was crying out to be restored so i obliged, I got it dug out and first thing i did was test it to see what kind of condition it was in and if it had any major defects and im glad to report it was fully functional, that is why in the video you dont see me taking the hydraulic cylinder apart as there was simply no need to.
After initial inspection i took it to the work bench and started the disassembly process. It came apart pretty easily except for the odd nut and bolt that needed a bit of persuasion with heat and a hammer.
After disassembly everything was stuck into a warm degreasing bath ( yes i need a parts washer ) and left to soak for an hour before giving them a good aggressive scrubbing to remove all the dirt and grease. After drying thoroughly all painted parts were media blasted to remove all old paint and any rust that had formed.
Any parts that weren't suitable for blasting were soaked in DEOX C to remove all rust.
The lifting arm on its horizontal face was particularly bad with rust pitting i had 2 choices at this point i could either go down the grinding route to resurface the arm or the body filler route and i chose the filler route as i felt it added another interesting process to the video. once dried and sanded smooth the arm was ready for primer along with all the other bare metal parts.
I decided at this point before i went any further to show a quick demo of the Ram in action so as not to be accused of building a non functional jack so this was the only reason i included this scene in the video.
After priming with etch primer and high build i wet flatted all the parts to give a super smooth surface for the paint to bond with to enhance the gloss levels and flatness of the final paint job. I mixed up the 2k yellow i colour matched to a piece of the old paint work then sprayed 3 coats then left to bake. After the bake cycle i came back into the booth and painted all the black parts in the same fashion.
All parts that were not painted like the pivots, nuts bolts, washers etc were all zinc plated and left to cure along with the paint.
Once all parts were totally dry it was time for assembly , not much to say here except lots grease was used and care taken no to chip any of the new paint apart from that its just a repeat of the disassembly in reverse.
This was another fun restoration, way longer than i anticipated but i hope you'll agree very interesting none the less.
A new addition to my videos from now on will be a water mark and my channel name popping up in random places throughout the video as im getting rather tired of people re-uploading my content as their own i hope you guys understand.
If you like what you see and have any ideas for the channel or would even like to donate something to restore to the channel please get in touch. :)
And as usual if you liked the video please like share and subscribe and help the channel grow.

Hey Guys, As you have probably noticed already i have updated the channel name and logo. The channel is no longer Really Random Channel it is now RRC Restoration. Just incase you were wondering why the water marks in the video still say Really Random Channel. Enjoy.

I'm glad more and more people are interested in these videos. I'm hoping it'll inspire more people to start fixing things rather than just buying new when an easy enough part to replace or refurb breaks. Too much is thrown away because it's easier to to buy new. So much waste for no reason, not to mention the satisfaction you get when you fix something they're all missing out on. Love the channel and videos mate.

I realize this is an older video, but I had to say you did a great job rebuilding and refinishing this floor jack. I did basically the exact same thing to mine, but powder coated everything but the actual hydraulic jack itself. And that is now the only part that I need to work on since it refuses to jack up the jack. But it will get repaired too. Thumbs Up!

I have one of these exact Eversure jacks(bought it new in the 70s i think) but my concern is not it's cosmetic looks but its hydraulic integrity. Whilst you have done a great job restoring its looks I would pay more attention to it having a complete new set of hydraulic seals. Nevertheless well done.

Fantastic videos!! The end results of your projects are incredible, but more importantly is the process, the organizational skills, the patience (at least on camera!😂🤣), the know-how. This is text book project management stuff!
Personally, I would really appreciate a short verbal explanation of what is happening in each video, and why a certain procedure is being applied. On the other hand, maybe your videos are perfect just the way they are recorded.
    Thanks for sharing your skills!!!

Just watching the restoration of your floor jack and noticed you using your bench grinder with the wire wheel. Any way……maybe a segment on restoring that grinder thus eliminating the wobblie base and zip tie holding it down. Just a thought from scorching Arizona. By the way, great job on the floor jack. Interesting that there is a nut and bolt on the plunger, that is different to the lower spec model which has a pivot and circlip. A very nice job done. Obviously you have a very deep understanding of how it all works and don't simply throw it away. I have the baby model of these and unfortunately cannot get the plunger seal anymore as it is a square section o-ring, and of course imperial. I've tried a normal circular section oring and it simply does not work. So my jack will probably have to go for scrap.

You put a really nice paint finish on it, my first ever trolley jack was a brand new Halfords 2 ton , and was finished in a kind of lime green hammered enamel, I had for like 25 years from my teens , then did a serious rebuild at around 20 , and painted the main body parts and cylinder in hammerite grey smooth, and all the other parts in hammerite "hammer" black, and it looked excellent, I like you making a point of re-greasing everything while you rebuild. NICE JOB !!!

Hi, If you are having a lot of problems with chipping you may need to have a look at the prep work before the final layer is applied if you are making the base too smooth the top coat wont adhere properly and that can cause paint to chip very easily as it hasn't got as good a grip as it should. Thank you for your kind comment.

I love restoration videos and don’t doubt your skills but virtually anyone could get these kind of results if we all owned sandblasters and spray guns, I’d like to see a channel of someone restoring things without specialist equipment and trying to achieve the best results possible with good old elbow grease and sandpaper etc to get a more realistic view of how much effort, time and skill it actually takes to restore something by hand.
