  • Caught a bunch of molting sand crabs (soft shell sand crabs) yesterday. Kept them in the refrigerator for the next day and went fishing for striped bass and perch. Caught a bunch of smelt along the way, tried three fishing spots and finally landed on a good little spot with lots of fish.

    dude this video bring me a lot of memories from my childhood
    when I was a kid my family had a house in the beach and we fishing there daily
    I discover these sandcrabs one day and I tried to use them as a bait but I never catch a fish with them
    watching this video makes me realize why, I always killed them before using them as a bait lol
    now I kinda want to go fishing and try again but its really far from where I live house and I don't have car
    anyway, thank you for the video. I've always liked your content bro, keep it up! Fishing 4 life

    I'm on the east coast and I know the sand crabs have different names wherever you may come from but we call them sand fleas and I've have found out if you hook them towards their back side ( middle ) they fish better, we fish with them for pompano, red drum, black drum, sheepshead there's so many fish that will eat them. BazuluWolf I say if your old enough with a driver license then just drive out there and fish, best way to learn is to go and do it. You would be surprised how many tips u will get from local fishermen's.

      NoSkilljutsu oh I know. Last time I went fishing was when I was 8 with my mom, and a bunch of local fishermen where there, and boy did they gave us a bunch of tips. I was doing a bunch of things wrong 😂😂 but yeah, they ended up catching a brown bass for me and decided to give it to us because I didn't catch anything. and yeah I agree, I don't think there's anything better than learning yourself and from the help of other people. I mean, I'm not far from getting a license but, when I do I'll go do just that.

    Yesterday caught a 21 inch striped bass using a hard shell sand crab (couldn't find many soft shell) at Ocean Beach. Followed your method of hooking the sand crab at the butt away from the spine so it was alive and kicking. I used a hi-low rig, but for my sinker I used a 2 ounce Kastmaster with a bucktail. That way I could do both bait and lure fishing. Caught the striped bass on a size 4 hook. Followed your method of using a 30lb leader ... didn't get a single tangle ... fished for a couple of hours ... using Celilo 9ft spinning rod (PK's recommendation) that can only take up to 2 ounces ... really light tackle .... thanks for your advice ... great video :)

    I have been keeping log all year for my striper fishing(mostly delta trolling and bait drifting) and I have been doing best on sandbars at low tide. Over 75% of my fish over 20” and all of my fish over 30” have been 5-12’ of water at low tide on sandbars or in between sandbars and deep water(sandbars at drop offs).im a firm believer in fishing tides on the delta but even with tides you have to consider the moon lol a full moon can turn the day time bite off in the spring due to spawning,but a sandbar at low tide on a full moon at nite... holly shit! Lol best fishing of my life!!!

    Dude:
    You are a very entertaining guy to watch and a good fisherman, no doubt; BUT could you be a little more careful releasing the unwanted fish you have caught, esp. the smelt? Tossing the smelt in the air and having them hit 1 inch water or just wet sand in the wash, will probably kill them, if not now then in a few hours.
    It is always good to show some respect to the fish you catch even if they are "By-catch". You do a good job on your videos, try to teach people also to respect the sea and the creatures in it. Best regards from NY

  • @user-kk6lc1th2r
    @user-kk6lc1th2r 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Those were some beautiful stripers you nailed there! Softshells are one of those baits that are so effective yet absolutely miserable to keep on the hook (if it even stays on the hook during the initial cast!). I know it's probably overkill but have you ever seen anybody use magic thread to keep a softie on the hook? I guess if you're on a beach crawling with them it doesn't matter... but it might help if you're using them in a place where you can't replenish your stock.
    Also if you have time this month before the season closes, you should revisit that hole @12:15. The shallow area next to the hole (and stretching down a couple blocks), in front of the rip, is crawling with dungies right now on the incoming and they're there for the pickin' 😉 Tight lines out there!

    • @FishermansLife
      @FishermansLife  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I've never seen anyone use magic thread with soft shell sand crabs. It probably would work but it would smush it to a ball which might not matter... They stay on the hook just fine for me until they get stolen. One of my friends casts kind of abruptly and that little jolt can knock them right off. Or if your leader is long and it gets Dragged In The Water as you cast that'll pull them right off too from the water tension. Got to have a smooth strong cast, keep them up, and they should stay on just fine.
      I'll check that spot out for dungy's. Even the whole I was fishing had a few so a snare wouldn't be a bad idea not much current in there either

    • @user-kk6lc1th2r
      @user-kk6lc1th2r 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahhh you're right the thread would likely act like a vice on the softies. I'll take your advice and play around with my leader length a bit and I _definitely_ need to work on smoother casting with a lighter setup. I'm so used to bombing snares or even hi/lo's with 6oz for rockfish that I often overdo it when on the beach.

      @carlosfung5780 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Striper season is starting to heat up all over so you can explore beaches from Santa Cruz, Half Moon Bay, Pacifica, and Ocean Beach in SF and have a solid chance to hooking into a striper. All depends how far you're willing to driving and how long you wanna put in at the beach.

    Very informative detailed well explained video. I particular like the info on spotting holes. Can't wait to show it to my nieces and nephews. There's nothing more I could tell them. I truly enjoyed it. Especially now the last week of January. I'm hooked!

    Organic fishing; catch your bait right where the fish are, can't beat it! I do the same; I've been using a pyramid fishing weight, this keeps the line from rolling in with the waves. Strong work!
