    Hot tip. Collect a bunch and flash boil them. They turn orange when done and you can freeze and keep them for a long time. I've had at least the same hookup rate if not better on the cooked orange ones than live. I bet it has something to do with the fact that they are very similar in color to the eggs under them. But it's awesome when they are hard to find

  • @Wasamatau
    @Wasamatau 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The most likely reason people think they're mushy is that they did what you did.... failed to put them on ice right away! Trout are the same way. I kept a stringer of trout on a stringer in a "cold" lake for hours until I had my limit. When I went to clean them they were mushy. Guys at the cleaning station sold me my error. I learned. I know it's often impractical, but ice is the answer. Nice film! Got my surf perch juices flowing. Heading for Monterey next week... with a fish cooler. :)

    A super enjoyable video with great sunset lighting. Those "surf" water conditions were calmer than my last pool lap swim. The setting looked like an exotic south pacific island with a barefoot local in shorts catching dinner. That spot looks like where "THE" surf caster fishes. I'm usually battling frequent (5) as you can see, short set waves. Great vid!! And yes, with lots of catching (and how to do it). Lots of catching is usually or not normal?? Or is it? Very obedient dog!!

    What's the difference between a fish finder rig and a carolina rig, other than the size weight used? The concept seems the same in which the sinker slides freely, and a single hook is used with a varying length of leader. If you were to put a 3 ounce egg sinker on a c-rig, it's accomplishing the same technique. Please explain if I'm missing something.

    • @fivepretzels
      @fivepretzels 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      a pyramid sinker on a fish finder rig will not roll around as much as an egg sinker on a carolina rig. if there isn't much current it won't make much of a difference.

    That's a nice day, man. Today at Bolsa Chica I got 4 corbina (10-12 inch range), a yellowfin croaker (same), a small perch (like 5 inch?), and a little ray (the round one, not the bat-shaped one), all on lug worms. Four species in a morning is a nice day for me. I'd rather have those tasty perch, though.

    • @caseG80
      @caseG80 ปีที่แล้ว

      Always fish the tide when surf fishing incoming high tide and the fish aren't far out there in 3ft to inches of water feeding off the shoreline

    Put the perch in the cooler with ice and water with a touch of salt.
    It helps to keep the meat firmer until you filet and eat or freeze.

    What beach is that? What town / state? I used to get a lot of sand crabs in the summers in SoCal and use them fishing for Corbina; sand crabs more scarce in the winter. I’m planning a drive down the Pacific coast Seattle to San Diego in December and don’t know whether to expect to find sand crabs in WA, OR or even northern CÀ, especially in winter, and, if not, what other bait to use.

I mostly been pier fishing more than surf fishing, the only time I've gone surf fishing me and my buddy only caught a shark, the only other species we have caught from the pier are rays, lobsters and mackerels. Have any spot suggestions? i feel for the most part we have the baits and lures down but not the destination. Been watching all your perch catching videos and now i wanna get ahold of some as well.
