  • HOW OFTEN SHOULD CHANGE TIMING CHAIN ON MAZDA. WHEN TO REPLACE TIMING CHAIN
In this video we will explain how often we change timing chain on Mazda car. Most people think that if your engine is equipped with timing chain it should not be replaced. However, lately we have been replacing and fixing engine that have had failed timing chain (not just Mazda cars). We will explain what we think is the correct interval and how often we replace the timing chain on our Mazda. We demonstrated how often to change timing chain on Mazda CX-7 but it should work on multiple Mazda engines and models.

This definitely seems like a your mileage may vary situation. I've had my 2004 Mazda 3, 2.3L since new. It now has over 208,000 miles. I've never replaced the timing chain and there is no noise. I only just recently replaced the belts, not because they failed, but just seemed like they were due and it's easy. Still on the original clutch too.

@@bathanmark I change my engine oil and filter every 7,500 miles per the user manual recommendations. I have almost always used full synthetic and switched to high mileage full synthetic at some point above 100k mi. The car is starting to use/burn a little oil now, but what can you expect at 222k miles? Others has catastrophic engine failure much earlier with the 2.3 L engine.
As for transmission oil, I have a manual. I've changed the gear oil 3 or 4 times. You MUST use GL-4 on this car. Red Line MT-90 works great. GL-5, even though Mazda says you can use it, doesn't work as well and makes shifting bad in cold weather. I know this from experience.
Still on the original clutch and front brake pads.

Not over reving excessively. Not drive like race car. Keep at or below power band. Not haul excessivr load, use quality intake filter. Some cheap filter causes restrictive flow and engine goes underpowrred. Regular oil change.
Turbo cars tho... The nature of high torque on 4 cylinder will always break things. Thats just the design. No brand has solved this issue.

So, my engine just had intake valves to piston contact and I have the engine out and I'm rebuilding it. It's a 2.3 and I'm wondering is there any tips you can give? Also, is there a break end procedure for a new cam chain kit install. I was just curious is there something I most make sure to do, to make sure oil has my chain tensioner pumped up? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. 👍🏻

Timing chains used to be mostly on pushrod engines using one short, stout chain, but now they are using super long chains or multiple chains on DOHC v6 and v8 engines, which requires multiple guides, tensioners, idlers etc.

the inside of that valve cover looks horrible. I would say that was not a well maintained engine. I have 178,000 on my original (2.3L) chain - nothing but Mobil 1 Full Synthetic changed every 6 months since breK-in. Timing chain still tight as can be between the cams (I realize the tensioner is probably at or close to the extended limit). Although this is on my "to-do" list, I do not consider it to be critical at this point in time (not hitting the valve cover, or making any noise). Love your videos BTW... when it does become time for me to replace, I will certainly use them to complete the job.

Pull the valve cover and check the play between the cams. If its still tight I would just keep my ears open for chain slap (into valve cover). It will let you know. Just don't wait if its making noise. This would also be a good time to replace the valve cover gasket. If its not already leaking, it won't be long.

I don't know where you got that idea from. Timing chains stretch overtime. Even if they don't fail, this does affect the timing of the engine. You may not notice much over the Long haul, or think that any change in performance is due strictly to age, but you will notice a difference with a new timing chain.

The timeing chain in my 2.3L Ford Ranger is not like that. It's heavier and I think it's called a double link. I've noticed that the cam sprocket teeth have wear marks that alternate on every other tooth. One tooth makes contact with the chain on the center of the tooth and the next makes contact on the outside edges and not the center. The vehicle has 137K mi on it. I don't think it needs it.
